Here is a statistic that should reasonate

  • According to the bureau of labor statistics at the end of 2008 we had 145,362,000 people working in civilian jobs. We had 79,501,000 who were considered out of the labor force.
  • According to the bureau of labor statistics at the end of 2015 we had 148,834,000 people working in civilians jobs. We had 93,671,000 who were considered out of the labor force
So in the first seven years of the Obama Presidency we had approximately three and a half million more people working, but twenty four fourteen million more people considered out of the labor force. In other words, for every one new person who got a job in the civilian labor market,  seven four people left the workforce all together.

Rather than wonder how the American public can look at the job market so negatively considering all the jobs Obama has created and how much unemployment has dropped... perhaps the left can:
  • wonder how the previous administration can claim twenty million new jobs when only three and a half million more people are working?
  • consider how little those twenty four million Americans who have left the workforce (and those around them) care about the unemployment percentage going down?

Ummm... The first baby boomers turned 65 during Obama's presidency. They have been retiring in large numbers.

Oh, and your math sucks. 93-79=14

He's got a masters in accounting. It also includes people from 16 and up and the millions in college, who are not working at all, or part time.

Indy is right, your math sucks.

I'm i that number of U6. I know personally dozens of people in my age group, who do to the high quality of our defined benefit pensions, quit working before 65. I retired at 62. My evil union pension paid the amount Social Security would have paid, until I turned 65. As of today I take home as much per month as I did while working. My expenses are lower so it's comfortable.

My wife is on SSDI so it's almost equal to her pay as an RN and she quit working at 62 also. Your ability to cherry pick is not as good as it was before you jumped on the Trump Train to Hell

I have long wondered why you have been excusing everything Trump says or does. I think I found it.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse used by narcissists in order to instill in their victim’s an extreme sense of anxiety and confusion to the point where they no longer trust their own memory, perception or judgment. The techniques used in “Gaslighting” by the narcissist are similar to those used in brainwashing, interrogation, and torture that have been used in psychological warfare by intelligence operative, law enforcement and other forces for decades.

Indy - mistake updated... only a four to one rate of new worker vs out of the labor force.

Two things:

- The overall work force has increased by seventeen million. approximately twenty million workers are currently between the ages of 65 and 75. There doesn't seem to be a four to one ratio of Americans reaching retirement age to those newly entering. That doesn't explain it.

- It still doesn't explain why only 3.5 million more Americans are employed, when we are being told that 20 million new jobs were created.

Roger... at least you understand that your "attempts" to refute something is a waste of time. I will give you an "A" for honesty.

And here I thought this post was about the eight previous years and the former President. But I will give you a hint, if anyone has been "gaslighted" by a politician...

I would think it would be the person who called their hero the "most successful Democratic President since FDR", and then rattled off a post with fifty different "accomplishments"....

For a man who has probably been more responsible for more Democratic down ticket losses than anyone else in history.

_______

I challenge you to find any such post on my blog where I sing the praises of any politician (much less Donald Trump). Why don't you go back through my posts and find a couple before you make silly accusations.

C.H., from your link the number of people in the workforce bottomed out in 2010, and bottomed out as a percentage of all adults in 2011. Both numbers have been increasing since then.

What this shows me is that, despite boomers reaching the full retirement age beginning in 2011, the workforce is recovering. I know a number of people who opted for collecting Social Security early due to the recession, despite reduced benefits, because they could find no work, so maybe these and many other early retirements were accounted for in 2008-2010 data.

Beats me where any claim of 20 million jobs created comes from. Either it's from some other data source or it's an error or blatant exaggeration. There's no doubt that a lot more people are working now than when the recession was in full swing, but there's also no doubt that the recovery never produced a general feeling that the hard times were over. And if that doesn't happen, it really doesn't matter what the statistics say.

So the 82 months of job increases as documented by the Department of Labor, is a lie, by the Obama administration. Even though they use the exact methodology as they have for 20 years.

I would be interested in seeing a breakdown over time of who is in and not in the workforce. The BLS link shows the percentage of adults in the workforce maximizing in 2000, but there really hasn't been a radical change over the 70 years data was collected. Presumably, as more women entered/remained in the workforce, this offset losses by students staying in schools longer and an increasing percentage of retirees in the population. Besides retirement of baby boomers, are there any other changes in workforce participation rates worthy of note over the past 10-15 years? Are there more stay at home moms and dads now, for instance? Is there still a noticeable number of people not yet eligible for Social Security that have just dropped out of the workforce, and if so, is there any data on why they've done so (e.g. returned to school, become a single-family household, just given up and are hanging out in parents' basement)?

I didn't even vote for Donald Trump. You already forgot that in spite of me repeating this multiple times.

You perceive opinions that don't exist. If they did, you could provide them. But you cannot.

Then you base your judgement on your faulty memory and odd perceptions.

Victims are in denial.

Either you are a victim here Roger, or Alzheimer's disease is setting in. Take your pick.

his issue is, and always has been this:

Invincible ignorance fallacy

The invincible ignorance fallacy[1] is a deductive fallacy of circularity where the person in question simply pig-headedly refuses to believe the argument, ignoring any evidence given. It is not so much a fallacious tactic in argument as it is a refusal to argue in the proper sense of the word, the method instead being to either make assertions with no consideration of objections or to simply dismiss objections by calling them excuses, conjecture, etc. or saying that they don't prove anything; all without actually demonstrating how the objection fit these terms (see ad lapidem fallacy).

The general rule of thumb with Roger, is when you ask him a question where the obvious answer it damning to his argument, he generally determines that this is the time that he had to go attend to something else.

Cognitive dissonance along with bias confirmation...

C.H. Truth said...

Roger - the BLS takes several surveys. Pundits love to cite the employer survey to determine how many new jobs these employers claim they are creating. The survey I am citing is a BLS survey from interviews with actual working Americans. Basically are you working or are you not working.

The former has it's place, but the latter is going to be much more in tune with how the electorate is feeling. Indy is 100% correct when he suggests that whatever recovery there was in the job market, it wasn't felt by enough Americans to make them fell that hard times were over.

Only people that need the money to pay bills would ever take Social Security at age 62 , an financial mistake made by the poor and the stupid.

I agree, I just this term when it comes to debating HB, he runs when the issue gets over his head, which is quick to happen and often.

Over the last 8 years we have seen ever more older adults working, to the point that the younger people complain that the entry level jobs are being held by those 62 and over.

KD said...

So with this fact it will make the debate more interesting, because the older American is still on the job, not retiring and with little saved , little hope of retirement anytime soon.

Click About 9 million people, or 18.8%, of Americans age 65 and up report being full- or part-time employees, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center.

By comparison, in 2000, only 12.8% of those 65 and up were working — about 4 million people.
