Well who didn't know this?

Conservatives really are better looking, research says
A recently published study in the Journal of Public Economics concludes that the attractiveness of a candidate does correlate with their politics. They find that politicians on the right are more good looking in Europe, the United States and Australia.

The researchers also offer a more general psychological explanation for the trend: That good-looking people are often treated better than others, and thus see the world as a more just place. Past studies have found that the more attractive people believe themselves to be, the lower their preference for egalitarianism, a value typically associated with the political left.

The opposition research firm that hired a former British spy to dig up dirt on Donald Trump is the same shady outfit that was hired by Planned Parenthood to put a positive spin on videos showing the sale of baby parts.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Washington D.C.-based Fusion GPS is the firm that hired Christopher Steele, the former British spy who authored the salacious but unsubstantiated 35-page Trump dossier that was published by BuzzFeed on Tuesday.

Harris to Pompeo: Repent, climate heretic

Confirmation hearings often reveal more about the panelists than they do about the nominee, and that’s certainly the case in the exchange that took place between Mike Pompeo and newly installed Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA). Donald Trump nominated Pompeo for director of the CIA, a role for which his years as chair of the House Intelligence Committee have prepared him, including an understanding of the role intelligence services play. Harris seems to have a strange set of priorities for intelligence operations, and her obsession with climate change leaves Pompeo almost laughing in bemusement.

Obviously not an upgrade to Boxer. What is this? The designated bimbo seat for California?

“Yesterday, I met in Washington with 45 nations – defense ministers and foreign ministers – as we were working together on the challenge of Daesh, ISIL, and terrorism,” Kerry said at the Vienna summit. “It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we – you – are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.”

Kerry’s statement was all the more remarkable because no hyperbole was intended. He actually meant that reducing the world’s use of hydrofluorocarbons, which he called “exceptionally potent drivers of climate change,” is just as important for the security of the world as combatting Islamic terrorism."

The USS Trump is sinking.

American voters approve 55 - 39 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing, his best approval rating in seven years, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. These same voters disapprove 51 - 37 percent of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president-elect.

Donald Trump will be a worse president than Barack Obama, 45 percent of voters say, while 34 percent say he will be a better president and 15 percent say he will be about the same, American voters tell the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll.

Americans are optimistic 52 - 43 percent about the next four years with Trump as president and say 47 - 31 percent that he will help rather than hurt the nation's economy.

Trump will be a "great" president, 12 percent of voters say; 30 percent say he will be a "good" president; 20 percent say he will be "not so good" and 32 percent say he will be "bad." That is 52%

The Coldheartedtruth is that the Russians and the FBI letter altered the presidential election results.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/01/what-cnns-bombshell-report-does-and-doesnt-say/512747/

Despite all of Donald Trump’s best efforts, the question of whether and why Russia interfered in the presidential election continues to dog him.

The latest twist comes from a bombshell report published early Tuesday evening by CNN, with four bylines, including Watergate legend Carl Bernstein. The story is unsettling, because it touches on suggestions that the Russian government might have compromising information about the president-elect. But the story is significantly more nuanced than that, and requires a careful parsing.

Here’s what CNN does say: When top intelligence officials briefed Trump last week on their conclusion that Russia interfered with the election to hurt Hillary Clinton and aid Trump’s presidential hopes, they presented him a two-page classified memo that included allegations that Russian agents say they have “compromising personal and financial information” about him. It is not, clear, however, whether U.S. intelligence officials believe those allegations to be true.

CNN says:

These senior intelligence officials also included the synopsis to demonstrate that Russia had compiled information potentially harmful to both political parties, but only released information damaging to Hillary Clinton and Democrats … The two-page synopsis also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, according to two national security officials.

Trump has consistently rejected the idea that the Russians were behind the hacking, and he has dismissed the idea that the intention was to help him. His opponents, on both left and right, have for months spoken hopefully of some sort of Holy Grail of information that would fatally compromise him, but so far no such information has emerged. There have been more concrete reports linking Trump aides to Russia. Carter Page, a one-time foreign-policy adviser, is deeply enmeshed in business interests there, while Paul Manafort, who for a time managed Trump’s campaign, had previously worked for a Kremlin client who was president of Ukraine and did business with a member of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

During a hearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Comey was asked by senators whether the FBI was investigating ties between Russia and Trump. Comey refused to say, saying he “would never comment on investigations, whether we have one or not”—a response that drew some embittered comments from senators who noted Comey’s very public statements about his agency’s investigation into Clinton’s emails.

The report offers yet more grist for Trump’s planned press conference Wednesday morning—his first in almost 170 days.

----

The President Elect is unwilling to admit that these Russians and the FBI letter altered the election. Clinton made mistakes on election strategies, but the early voting changed dramatically to favor Donald Trump after the letter from Comey and the Russian government hacking.

He won and is going to have a 37% approval on January 20, 2017. This will act as a drag on his agenda. In the Senate, the narrow lead will give a few Republicans the courage to push back against some of his controversial policies.

The repeal of the ACA, ObamaCare, will cost $3 trillion dollars. The Republicans don't have a plan to replace it.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/obamacare-repeal-doomsday-233335

Hospital and health plan leaders talk in almost apocalyptic terms about what might lie ahead if Republicans abolish Obamacare without a blueprint for its replacement.

Their doomsday scenario: Millions of people could lose their health care coverage, hospitals could hemorrhage cash and shocks to the $3 trillion-a-year health system could send ripples through the entire economy.

“That transition period is going to be like that slow-moving tsunami that we know is coming, and we can watch it and try to prepare for it — but in the aftermath of the tsunami, there’s devastating loss that we never could have planned for,” said Heidi Gartland, vice president for community affairs and government relations at Cleveland-based University Hospitals Health System.

Hospitals estimate that repealing Obamacare could cost them $165 billion by the middle of the next decade and trigger “an unprecedented public health crisis" if sick people are unable to get care. Even before that happens, though, uncertainty about what might replace the law and how it could affect the bottom lines of hospitals, in particular, has spurred CEOs to cut spending.

“Everybody is going to continue to belt tighten and take action fearing the worst is going to happen,” said William Conway, CEO of Detroit’s 1,300-physician Henry Ford Medical Group.

That anxiety has already claimed casualties: The Advisory Board Company, which provides services to health care firms, announced last week that it is laying off 220 people in part because hospitals hit the brakes on spending following the GOP sweep. Providers warn the situation will worsen the longer Congress goes without passing a replacement as fears of mounting losses prompt decisions to close programs, trim staffs and curtail care.

Hill Republicans insist they have no choice but to take drastic action immediately. Obamacare, they argue, was headed into a death spiral well before they gained full control of Congress. They point to skyrocketing premiums, insurer exits and dwindling consumer choices as evidence that the current system can’t be salvaged.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

-------
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/gop-obamacare-repeal-replacement-resistance-233298

growing number of Senate Republicans are resisting the idea of repealing Obamacare without a concrete replacement proposal, complicating GOP plans to move swiftly to undo the health care law.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) started the open, intra-party dissension this week when the libertarian-leaning senator urged Republicans to vote on a replacement plan at the same time they pass a repeal bill. He was followed a day later by hard-line conservative Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), then by the more centrist Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.).

And Paul said on Twitter late Friday that the most important Republican, President-elect Donald Trump, is fully on board, too.

"I just spoke to @realDonaldTrump and he fully supports my plan to replace Obamacare the same day we repeal it," Paul wrote. "The time to act is now."

At least a half-dozen GOP senators have now expressed public or private concerns about the party's current trajectory. Their worry: Republicans will be blamed for wreaking havoc on the health care system and causing people to lose their coverage without any assurance they have a superior — or any — plan of their own.

“I think the president-elect’s position is the right position,” Corker told reporters on Friday morning. “During the campaign he said that repeal and replace should take place simultaneously. That to me is the prudent course of action.”

The GOP can only lose two votes in the narrowly-divided Senate once Mike Pence becomes vice president and can break a tie. The package is expected to include a related provision to defund Planned Parenthood, which makes it more difficult for a pair of moderate Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, to support it.

People close to Senate Republican leadership believe that they’ll ultimately have the votes to get the repeal plan through. Republican lawmakers, they say, will be hard-pressed to vote against killing a law so widely despised by conservatives.

The 37% approval will get more Republicans to pull their heads out of their asses

Tyrants don’t allow open questioning, and they hate the free press. They want total control. Trump's so-called “news conference” today (the first time he’s faced reporters in six months) was a sad example:

1. Trump refused to answer questions from reporters who have run stories he doesn’t like, or from news outlets that have criticized him.

2. He loaded the audience with paid staffers who cheered his statements and jeered at reporters.

3. He continued calling the media “dishonest.”

4. He criticized CNN for dispensing “fake news,” called Buzzfeed “a pile of garbage,” and sarcastically called the BBC “another beauty.”

It wasn’t a “news conference” at all, and shouldn't be called one. It was another attempt to control the media. Trump isn’t even president yet, but he’s already eroding our democracy. We must not allow him to.

Sessions:

The Alabama senator had the most exhaustive confirmation hearing of the week, stretching into two days. NPR's Meg Anderson had a recap:

"Democrats don't have the votes to stop Sessions' appointment. Perhaps as a result, they focused primarily on fleshing out what Sessions' relationship would be with the president as attorney general and reminded him of the importance of an independent Justice Department. Sessions spent a lot of the day reassuring his colleagues that he would follow the law, first and foremost, and expressing his disagreements with some of the president-elect's more extreme proposals."

Sessions said he opposed bringing back waterboarding as an extreme interrogation technique, and he also said that he opposed other Trump campaign proposals of banning Muslims from coming into the U.S. amid terrorism concerns and also said he opposed any type of registry of Muslims either.

"And I think we should avoid surveillance of religious institutions unless there's a basis to believe that dangerous or threatening illegal activity could be carried on there," he added.

Sessions' record on race was a key focus, 30 years after his hopes of a federal judgeship were scuttled by the same committee over allegations he had used racist language as a U.S. Attorney. Sessions denied those allegations, reiterating that, "I did not harbor the kind of animosities and race-based discrimination ideas I was accused of. I did not."

In Day 2, Jeff Sessions' Attorney General Hearings Turn To Civil Rights
But that didn't stop some of Sessions' colleagues from taking an unprecedented step in testifying against his confirmation. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., the first sitting senator to testify against a fellow senator during a confirmation hearing, said Sessions' record "indicates that we cannot count on him to support state and national efforts toward bringing justice to the justice system."

And Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a venerated civil-rights leader who marched with Martin Luther King Jr., told the Judiciary Committee that, "Those who are committed to equal justice in our society wonder whether Sen. Sessions' calls for law and order will mean today what it meant in Alabama when I was coming up back then."

The Republicans are not going to let Trump be himself

The country’s leading doctors group is urging Republicans to take steps to ensure that people do not lose their health insurance once ObamaCare is repealed.

The American Medical Association (AMA), wrote a letter to congressional leaders on Tuesday calling for the gains in coverage from ObamaCare, which has expanded insurance to 20 million people, to be preserved.

“In considering opportunities to make coverage more affordable and accessible to all Americans, it is essential that gains in the number of Americans with health insurance coverage be maintained,” AMA CEO Dr. James Madara wrote leaders in both parties.

“Consistent with this core principle, we believe that before any action is taken through reconciliation or other means that would potentially alter coverage, policymakers should lay out for the American people, in reasonable detail, what will replace current policies,” Madara continued.

“Patients and other stakeholders should be able to clearly compare current policy to new proposals so they can make informed decisions about whether it represents a step forward in the ongoing process of health reform.”

Kelly also said he opposed reinstating waterboarding and also said he had "high confidence" in U.S. intelligence findings on Russian attacks on the elections.

And Kelly said he opposed any kind of surveillance on mosques or any creation of a Muslim database, testifying that, "I don't think it's ever appropriate to focus on something like religion as the only factor" when looking to prevent terrorism.

CIA Director nominee Mike Pompeo

The Kansas GOP congressman Trump has chosen to lead the intelligence department also broke with the president-elect, opposing waterboarding as a form of torture.

In this hearing, in which the power was lost and the C-SPAN camera feed went down (just as they were talking about Russia), Pompeo also said he had confidence in the current U.S. intelligence program and said he agreed with their findings that Russia had tried to meddle in the elections, again putting him at odds with the man he would serve, NBC News reported:

"In his opening remarks, Pompeo took aim at Russia, saying that Moscow has 'reasserted itself aggressively, invading and occupying Ukraine, threatening Europe and doing nothing to aid in the defeat of ISIS.'

"He later said, 'It's pretty clear about what took place here about Russia involvement in efforts to hack information and to have an impact on American democracy.'"

for someone who considers himself to be so brilliant, your political instincts are for shit.

if you had actually been watching the hearings on c-span like i have you would see the hearings for what they really are - kabuki theatre.

the interviewees have spent most of their time telling the senators what they want to hear. of course they're against torture and in favor of increasing the HUD budget. fucking DUH. why create controversy when they'll be confirmed anyway since democrats are powerless to stop them.

my junior senator made an ass of herself over women and LBGTQWERTY's in the military, and T-BONE booker kicked off his 2020 presidential campaign with some phony protestation.

trump castrated your party and your media. and since then he's been playing you for the fools that you are. and you're falling for it.
