So why is it that...

Every time some crazy monster goes to a place that doesn't allow guns... takes out his own gun and mows a bunch of people down. The solution for so many people is to double down on the concept of not allowing guns?

Perhaps if we just posted a few more "no guns allowed" signs or possibly clarified what we would like to accomplish with those signs... that would do the trick?

yes, signs. gun free zone signs. everywhere.

i mean, can you imagine the reaction of a potential shooter? imagine, just as he (or she) is shouldering the weapon to squeeze off a round and "OH NOES!" the shooter spies a gun free zone sign. drat! foiled again!

...as the potential shooter slinks off to find another target, but this time, one without a sign.

The point of the 2nd amendment was to allow arms that are most commonly carried by infantry soldiers.

Which now are semi-automatic pistols and rifles.

That is what well-regulated militia means.

Grandmother thwarted Washington school shooting by looking at student's journal, cops say

A student in Washington state was arrested Tuesday after his grandmother called authorities to report "upcoming and credible threats" of a plot in his journal to attack a high school after flipping a coin, officials said.

The Everett Police Department said in a news release the grandmother contacted authorities around 9:30 a.m. and showed police excerpts of the journal, which "detailed plans to shoot students and use homemade explosive devices at ACES High School." Officers were also told by the grandmother that 18-year-old Joshua Alexander O'Connor had a rifle stored in a guitar case, which she discovered after reading the journal.

I don't know where you grew up but in West Texas, rural community, I guess 40 years ago, parking in the school lot with a gun in the rack was a big offense. Everyone had guns in their trucks, and like you I didn't think anything of it.

We didn't over-react with police state tactics and swat teams back then, but rest assured that I heard all about it before the day was out, and impressed in no uncertain terms that it was never to happen again.

Out of sight, it would probably have been OK. But in theory we could have been in trouble for carrying a pocket knife. I'd say, aside from the way some teachers and administrators are neurotic about it these days, the actual policies about weapons in school haven't changed all that much.

An interesting puzzle for anyone who wants to take a stab at it. But mostly, if you are one of those who believe that banning machine guns resulted in a huge decrease of machine gun deaths.

Background 1: Sales of machine guns were prohibited in 1986 (the Hughes amendment of the Firearm Owners Protection Act). Prior to then, there were some number of machine gun fatalities.

Background 2: There have been a number of tragedies, where small children have been killed by the inappropriate use of bicycle helmets. Getting them caught in jungle gyms for example, resulting in strangling.

Question: which of these two were the cause of more deaths? Machine guns owned by civilians in the 20 years before 1986, or bike helmets worn by children in the past 20 years?

Anyone? James, take a wild guess? Are bike helmets more or less dangerous than machine guns were?

Wp Hamilton, don't play stupid with me. When machine guns were banned, many people then said (as they do now) that the outlawing of machine guns would mean nothing, because CRIMINALS would pay no attention to the law and continue to possess them and use them illegally.

HOWEVER the CRIMINALS became very quickly aware that the mere OWNING of a machine gun would cost them SIGNIFICANT time in the penitentiary, and therefore machine gun ownership dropped precipitously as did machine gun deaths.

That is simple fact.

1934 was a] year in which the United States faced unprecedented challenges from a new kind of gun and a new kind of criminal, and the country responded with new laws.

The weapon in question was the tommy gun. Named for its inventor, John T. Thompson, the tommy gun is the kind of short machine gun you see in old-timey mob movies, usually with a cylindrical drum of bullets hanging from the barrel. And the tommy gun really was the weapon of choice for mobsters and bandits, who were a major part of the American consciousness during Prohibition and the Depression.

“By the late 1920s, through popular culture, through news reports, through movies, you have this rising crime rate where criminals are using weapons like the tommy gun, like the sawed-off shotgun,” says Robert Spitzer, a professor of political science at SUNY Cortland and the author of several books on the history of gun control.

“A cry arose in the country to regulate these weapons,” he says.

And that cry sounds a lot like the arguments we hear today.

“Why should desperadoes, brazen outlaws of the period, be permitted to purchase these weapons of destruction?” wrote the editors of the Waco News-Tribune in 1933 after the Texas—yes, Texas—statehouse passed a ban on fully automatic weapons.

When New York state banned submachine guns, the Ironwood Daily Globe in Ironwood, Michigan, called it a “a very excellent law” and went on to say, “It is hard to think of any good reason why every other state in the union should not copy it at once.”

That was also in 1933, the same year that New York’s previous governor, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became president of the United States. Roosevelt favored a registration law for machine guns. And he also favored a new approach to how the federal government interacted in Americans’ everyday lives.

When crimes involving tommy guns began making headlines, many lawmakers wanted to restrict the machine gun's use to soldiers and law enforcement....

The National Firearms Act of 1934 required registration and a tax of $200 (almost $3,600 in today’s dollars) on all so-called gangster weapons, a category that included the tommy gun and sawed-off shotguns. While gangsters might’ve been able to pay the fine, they weren’t keen to be registered, which meant getting fingerprinted and photographed. This created a new legal loophole for the Feds to bust mobsters on whom pinning charges would’ve been otherwise difficult; simply having an unregistered gun was enough to prompt an arrest.

James said...

This doesn’t mean the 1930s were a time when any gun control laws could pass. “There was profound opposition,” says UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, author of Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America. The National Rifle Association (NRA) was instrumental in removing provisions from the 1934 law that would’ve required the licensing of handguns. And while the Second Amendment wasn’t often evoked in the debate over the law, Attorney General Homer Cummings was up front about the fact that, in an effort to stay in line with the Constitution and prevailing thoughts on the federal role in policing the public, the legislation only taxed and regulated guns and did not ban them.

Despite the opposition, the legislation passed.

“It was very effective,” Spitzer says of the National Firearms Act. “When people shrug their shoulders and say gun laws don’t work, all you have to do is point to the 1934 law.”

State laws went even further in this time. Spitzer has chronicled how many states banned gangster weapons outright. And a handful of states even banned semiautomatic firearms, which, unlike the tommy gun, require a shooter to pull the trigger for every round fired. The military-style rifle used in many modern mass shootings, the AR-15, is a semiautomatic gun.

The mainstream debate about gun control occasionally came to the fore over the following decades, but Spitzer and Winkler say it wasn’t until the late 1970s that it took on the energy we still see today. That’s when the NRA became more politically powerful. State laws were loosened or repealed. Gun technology advanced and American politics shifted. In 1939, the Supreme Court had upheld the National Firearms Act. In 2008, the court struck down Washington, D.C.’s gun regulations.

WASHINGTON — Steve Bannon, who served as President Donald Trump’s chief strategist, was interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller over multiple days this week, NBC News has learned from two sources familiar with the proceedings.

Bannon spent a total of some 20 hours in conversations with the team led by Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia as well as other issues that have arisen around the probe.

Bannon left his job as a senior White House adviser in August and returned to a leadership role at Breitbart, the right-wing news site based out of Washington. But he fell out of favor with the site’s financial backers, the Mercer family, after criticizing the president and his family in "Fire and Fury,” a book about the Trump administration published earlier this year by author Michael Wolff.

This account, detailing the demise of the months-long immigration push, is based on interviews with more than a dozen senators and aides who’ve worked on the issue since Trump announced last fall he was rescinding the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.”

“While senators vowed to try again, there’s no apparent reason to think the next time will be any different. "How Wp can say what he says is beyond me." - pure logical reasoning.

"If rapid fire weapons were banned for selling or owning, it would surely result in fewer deaths in given situations." - does not follow.

Given that there are 300 million guns, many if not most semi-automatic, there will always be a supply and they will be available for use in those situations.

Secondly, the choice of weapon in these situations has NOT depended on maximal lethality. Other abailable weapons are as lethal, or even more lethal, in these situations. If you succeed, you'd probably wind up causing greater bloodshed.

Thirdly, given the number of weapons owned by Americans, you have zero chance of banning ownership of them. Your proposal is a fantasy scenario.

"If there is any truth to these stories (well we heard Trump say it on tape so we know there is LOL - wp), then it shows a pattern of Trump engaging in consensual sex (mostly true - wp) not harassment or assault. " uh, not so fast. It can be sexual harassment even if the woman (or man) allows it. Workplace harassment works like that. Secondly, if they object, or even if the touching is unwanted and they don't object, it is assault.

I'm sure you don't act this way, but just in case you'd best get this straight in your head. Unwanted touching of a sexual nature IS assault, no matter how they react overtly.

"And therefore, no business of ours." - don't be silly. Of course it's our business, as soon as he started running for President.

The women themselves said there was no unwanted touching or harassment WP.

And it happened years before he became president.

So again how is this our business.

Some women have said that there was.

"So again how is this our business"

Because compromised individuals are unqualified for public office. Because we hold our Presidents to higher standards than sexual predators. Because it demonstrates a life-long lack of standards, which are unacceptable to most of us.

The President is a public figure CS. He accepted that when he took the job. Everything he does in public, and his past history, becomes our business.

Some women have said that there was.

And where are these women now?

Their accusations were evaluated by the voters and deemed not credible.

It's true he's a public figure but don't pretend your interest is noble. It is salacious at best.

Because compromised individuals are unqualified for public office.

The most compromised person to ever occupied the presidency was John Fitzgerald Kennedy and I feel pretty sure had he lived he would have won a second term.

The second most compromise person in office was Bill Clinton and he did win two terms despite impeachment.

Nobody thought teetotaler Jimmy Carter ever cheated on his wife and his presidency was a one term disaster.

There may be a lesson here.

Also FDR had an affair before and while he was in office.

Why is it that Trumpfags voted for someone whose STATED CAMPAIGN POSITION on gun control involved banning some people from owning guns?

Simple: Because the Trump cult (which includes the NRA) has no concern for the Constitution, their only priority being loyalty to their Jim Jones.
