Two very similar questions?

  • Does Schiff and the Democrats want their memo to be releases?
  • Do the Democrats want to cut a deal for DACA?
As has been pointed out, Adam Schiff and the rest of the Democrats in the House intelligence do not appear to be exactly working their fingers to the bone with the FBI to rewrite and redact their memo. They do, however, appear to be working overtime on the television circuit, bemoaning the entire process. You heard very little about what was in the original memo from the Republicans until it came out. One can assume correctly that Nunes, Gowdy, and the rest of the Republicans felt that their memo would speak for itself.

On the flip side, the Democrat are providing a ton of talk, but little action in backing up the talk. I am still hoping that eventually their memo gets released. Neither the Republicans on the committee or the President seem particularly worried about the memo. Just compare and contrast the reaction of the Democrats to the release of the first memo (which was over the top, sky is falling, sort of stuff), with the muted reaction from Republicans and the President. You almost get the feeling that they (Trump and the GOP) welcome the second memo.
_______

Similarly, it certainly feels like the President (especially) and the Republicans are willing to cut a deal with the Democrats to fix the DACA situation. Of course, the key there is that the President and Republicans want a deal. They are not going to allow for a separate fix for the dreamers that does not address other immigration priorities. They have the distinct advantage of knowing that the American public would like to see a comprehensive deal as well. The pillars of their deal (chain migration, visa lottery, border security) are all very popular with the public.

On the flip side, the Democrats seem poised to play politics with the issue. You get a sense that they are using more energy trying to figure out if they can tie blame to Trump or the GOP for any potential failure to secure a deal, than they are using trying to come up with a solid game plan on an actual deal. That being said, I think it would be a very big political mistake (at least short term) for the Democrats to walk away from a deal (that includes amnesty for the Dreamers) because they didn't want to give any ground on the other issues. Many in the Hispanic community are becoming impatient and frustrated with the process. Democrats simply have too much to lose if they drop the ball on this one.

Eh, the simple answers are correct:

Does Schiff and the Democrats want their memo to be releases? - Yes

Do the Democrats want to cut a deal for DACA? - Yes

Do Republicans (Trump and the GOP) welcome the second memo? - Obviously not.

Did they feel that the Nunes memo would "speak for itself" - they hoped that it would. If only they can squelch any further facts from being made public, they may "feel" that it stand on its own.

The answer is no and it's for the same reason, they want the issue for the election.

They'll only reverse field if they see it backfiring on them.

Vanessa Trump taken to hospital as precaution after suspicious letter sent to her home

President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law was taken to a Manhattan hospital as a precaution on Monday after a suspicious letter containing an unidentified substance was sent to her apartment, senior law enforcement and city officials told NBC News.

The letter was addressed to Vanessa Trump's husband, Donald Trump Jr., the eldest child of the president and his ex-wife Ivana.

The blame squarely lays with the hysterical and hyperbolic news media as well as the hysterical liberals committed to taking down Trump at any cost.

Striking contrast isn't it? The Republicans have just spent two Presidential terms obstructing everything possible, and overtly so that they could make a campaign issue of it. The Democrats are stridently advocating for their policy agenda, in this case DACA, and for example, compromising on budget talks in exchange for the promise of debate on the issue.

Yet in spite of the evidence right in front of them, Republican supporters ascribe to Democrats the very methods that their own leaders have engaged for years. It's as if they've been so indoctrinated in that confrontational, votes above everything approach that they cannot even imagine leaders who are actually working for their constituents.

On June 17, 1972, police arrested five men inside the offices of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C.. In their possession were $2,300, burglary tools, a walkie-talkie, a radio scanner capable of listening to police frequencies, cameras, forty rolls of film, tear-gas guns, electronic devices they apparently intended to plant in the Democratic Committee offices, and notebooks containing the telephone number of White House official E. Howard Hunt. One of the men, James McCord, Jr., was a former Central Intelligence Agency employee and a security man for Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President (popularly known as "CREEP").

>A pair of Washington Post reporters, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, pursued the story for two years. The scandal eventually implicated many members of the Nixon White House, and Nixon eventually became the first U.S. president to resign. In their later book, All the President's Men, Woodward and Bernstein wrote that key information in their investigation had come from an anonymous informant they dubbed "Deep Throat." After decades of speculation it was revealed, and confirmed by Woodward and Bernstein, that Deep Throat was Felt.

Woodward had befriended Felt years earlier and had consulted with him on stories before the Watergate scandal. Woodward, Bernstein, and others credit the information provided by Deep Throat as being instrumental in ensuring the success of the investigation into the Watergate Scandal.

EPA Proposes Cuts to Climate Change Research, Pollution Programs
President Donald Trump’s proposed fiscal 2019 budget slashes funding for the Environmental Protection Agency and calls for the elimination of a number of programs that focus on climate change and pollution.

The Trump budget, which was assembled before Congress passed a two-year spending bill last week, calls for the EPA to be funded at $5.4 billion in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, down more than 30% from the enacted 2017 budget. After adjustments for the additional money authorized in the budget deal, the EPA said it would end up with a total of about $6.15 billion.

The administration says it wants to eliminate programs that duplicate functions performed by other agencies or that it wants state and local governments to take on. It projects that these cuts will save about $600 million.

Among more than 30 programs targeted for elimination are those focused on climate change research, environmental education, protection of beaches, reducing risk to health from radon and other indoor air pollutants, lead risk reduction, fighting marine pollution, and protecting national estuaries.

Many of these programs were previously targeted for elimination by President Trump in his 2018 budget, but still funded by Congress.

Environmental groups argue that the cuts are unrealistic and that the administration is asking states to take on programs without needed money and support.

“The president appears to have learned nothing since a year ago. Not even the Republicans in Congress wanted to support these cuts, because they did not and have not,” said Elgie Holstein, who coordinates policy work at the Environmental Defense Fund.

Asked about the argument that programs are dealt with by other agencies or can be taken over by states, Mr. Holstein argued that expertise and funding by the EPA are essential.

“These programs were placed in EPA’s budget because this is the agency that has the scientists and legal professionals and other experts that know how to do this work,” he said. “Even if the states somehow or other came up with these millions of dollars they do not have the expertise that the national Environmental Protection Agency has.”

The EPA did not respond to requests for comment.

Without Deep Throat, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein would not have been able to break the Watergate conspiracy.

1: Even then, after a reporter has consulted with an editor, the practice is for the reporter and editor to know the person’s name and to validate that source. The reporting journalist does not create the story out of vile to the subject of the article.

2: It’s up to the press, from that point, to check and double check that what a source might be saying has some teeth to it. It’s up to the journalist to work the story. The editor again, must be certain that the anonymous source is valid.

3: Of course, it’s easy to understand why people in power do not care for anonymous sources. Richard Nixon probably would not have been forced to resign if the White House had been succeeded in discrediting Deep Throat because he was not valid. This White House is leaking like the Titanic. This President is the captain of a sinking vessel.

4: They want to know where damaging information might be coming from. They want to know if the person revealing that information is really a good source. In a major newspaper, the validity of the anonymous sources must be valid.

5: In this example, they don’t want damaging information to come out. And in the current political climate, where one of the major media outlets has become nothing more than a spokesman for the White House. Fox News is now the Presidential News Propaganda Chamber. Sometimes anonymous bloggers join the propaganda machine.

The main point is that the NY Times was quite literally 180 degree wrong... just as CNN, ABC, WaPo and others have been 180 degrees wrong on numerous occasions.

Woodward & Bernstein took months to develop that story. They did hours and hours of research, checked and cross-checked and double checked. They had multiple sources and corroboration of those sources. Most importantly the sources and the INFORMATION from the sources were accurate. ACCURATE!!!

That's the point you simply refuse to acknowledge. The source is only as good as the information that is being planted. These reporters are not doing any research. They are not checking, much less cross checking or double checking. They are not taking months or weeks or even days to develop a story.

They answer their phone and they accept whatever it is that the person on the other line tells them. As long as the story appears negative or derogatory regarding Trump and his Administration... they run with it.

So do yourself a favor Roger...

Don't make yourself look like such an idiot with ridiculous comparisons that every WaPo writer Politico blogger with a fake source in the White House is Woodward and Bernstein. Woodward and Bernstein did not spend a total of even 10 minutes attempting to report on Nixon's television habits, or whether or not he was upset with a staffer. Comparing them with what's going on today is an insult and diminishes what they accomplished.

i think you're giving the press too much credit. they're not even talking to a source. they're making shit up and attributing it to an anonymous source just for the sake of a shred of credibility. the reality is that there is no source. only, to use a timely example, maggie haberman's preconceived notions, TDS, and confirmation biases.

today's press is corrupt to the core. that roger mentions them in the same breath as woodward and bernstein is an insult to a bygone era of legitimate, fact-based journalism.

yeah...

out in the real world we call that doing her job. and in case you had not realized it sport, the onus is on the accuser, not the accused, to get the facts of the allegation straight.

lil jimmy acosta's "when did you stop beating your wife" schtick is worthy of nothing more than mockery and derision. when you think of it, kind of like your posts.

as CH tried to explain to you, when woodward and bernstein used felt as their anonymous source, his info was checked, re-checked, then checked again. vigorous debates were had in ben bradlee's office as to whether or not their info was good enough for publication. for you to imply that the same situation applies today when modern 'journalists' just write what they feelz, the truth be damned because that TDS is oh so good, makes a mockery of an era when the profession earned the respect it was given.

glenn reynolds - instapundit - calls today's journalists "democrats with bylines."

Exactly incorrect.

I have not said that the leak from the anonymous source is correct. I believe that they are, but that is my opinion. I'm been saying that the attempt to discredit anonymous sources under any circumstances is invalid.

behold the faulty logic here.

questioning or holding anonymous sources to account for accuracy and truthfulness is now equal to discrediting. well, like i said before, the onus is on the accuser, not the accused to verify the veracity of the charge.

won't you won't admit is that you're so, so desperate to believe any negative report on trump or his staff, that you hold him as 'guilty until proven innocent' with every new anonymously sourced report.

The only source of information contradicting the anonymous source, is the White House spokesperson.

And simple reality.

John Kelly is still the C.O.S.

The President expressed confidence him.

The NY Times "anonymous source" stated that the President had lost confidence and that John Kelly was offering to resign (with all the implications that John Kelly was on his way out).

Trump has never had issues expressing his disappointment or angst with his staff. He generally let's us know when he is upset and who he is upset with.

Are you somehow suggesting that in this particular case that Trump was mad as hell, Kelly was out the door, and that they decided to simply provide a different scenario to the public in a lame attempt to prove the NY Times wrong?

Why?

Thank you for making the point for me Dennis if SCOTUS didn't have the power to make law, nobody would care that much who is on the court.

But since justices and judges exercise power that was never envision in the Constitution then it matters who's on the court.

Judges and justices are appointed for life, just like a monarch.

heh:

Trump isn't getting more popular, but his policies are

More voters are giving high ratings to the economy and giving President Trump credit for it.

History shows a candidate's perceived competency is more important than likability.

That could be enough to save the GOP from losing the House in the 2018 midterms.

I believe that they were hoping for one of those tail wagging the dog moments.

Where if they made a big enough fuss out of everything, kept the story hot, that eventually there would be pressure for someone to fall on a sword. They were obviously hoping that someone would be General Kelly (as most people give him a lot of credit for bringing some stability to the White House and it would be better for the media if he was gone).

The problem was reality. Harold Portle (or whatever his name was) was a staff secretary who had unsubstantiated allegations of domestic abuse from several years ago. The only person responsible was the staff secretary and the only person who had to fall on the sword was him.

General Kelly didn't hire the guy, he wasn't in charge of his FBI approval process, and there was literally no good reason for General Kelly to feel responsible for any of it... or for the President to specifically be mad at his Chief of Staff over the issue.

The story had six degrees of separation from common sense.

Loretta said...

Exactly.

HB Predicted Kelly was gone by Monday the 12th of February, 2018.

So there was no way HB was going to be right and he is not.

Until you read it all. FBI director said they closed the case in January (which was mentioned) and then stated that they reopened it when they received additional information (which was not mentioned).

So if it was reopened with new information and never closed... then when asked a couple of weeks ago about the status... wouldn't calling it "ongoing" actually be accurate?

Anonymous said...

yeah, it would be accurate. i'm not sure why outlets like the DC would be blowing it out of proportion.
