Border problems escalate

On Sunday, one of those protests, peaceful at first, turned chaotic when several hundred migrants broke away, overwhelming Mexican federal police officers before rushing a border fence and attempting to illegally enter the U.S.
In response, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers shut down both south and northbound traffic at the San Ysidro border crossing south of San Diego for nearly six hours. The closure disrupted one of the busiest border crossings in the world at the tail end of a holiday weekend when border crossings are typically packed with travelers.
CBP officers also fired tear gas after some migrants threw projectiles at them, U.S. officials said.

So the President has offered that we just may need to shut down these border crossings more often or for longer periods of time. Permanently seems a bit drastic, but I certainly the "concept" has been tossed around.

This, of course, would disrupt normal legal travel between the US and Mexico and likely piss off a lot of people. While my best guess is that many would be pissed at authorities, the Fed, or the President for taking the actions, the problem here is the "caravan". This is the added piece to the puzzle that doesn't otherwise fit.

I will give credit where credit is due and say that Mexico has been doing their part in keeping events from getting further out of hand. They have been keeping them away from these border crossing areas as much as they can.

The problem comes from those who are willing to suggest that members of the caravan should circumvent the laws and law enforcement and come across by any means necessary, and then once in America they can seek asylum and just sort of mingle into society.

remember when this happened under 0linsky? yeah, me neither...

A group of about 100 people trying to illegally cross the border Sunday near the San Ysidro port of entry threw rocks and bottles at U.S. Border Patrol agents, who responded by using pepper spray and other means to force the crowd back into Mexico, federal officials said.

The incident has raised concerns among advocates on both sides of the immigration debate, as well as Border Patrol representatives.

Immigrant-rights groups in San Diego said they didn’t know beforehand about the plan to rush the border, and they worry that desperation is driving homeless deportees to make a bold bid to rejoin their families in the United States.

Border-security groups see this situation as evidence that the border remains unsecured, something they said should be fixed before Congress considers proposals to grant legal status to unauthorized immigrants.

And Border Patrol representatives worry that Sunday’s confrontation could be a political protest, which they said agents want to avoid — especially when it involves the potential for loss of life.

The incident occurred about a quarter-mile west of the San Ysidro border crossing in the Tijuana River channel. No one was seriously injured, no shots were fired and no arrests were made, said Mary Beth Caston, a Border Patrol spokeswoman.

Here's one more oddball, and wrong, claim that makes the rounds at Christmastime: The Obamas did away with the traditional White House Christmas tree beginning in 2009 in favor of a secular "holiday tree."

Myth of the Obama Holiday Tree Spreads
A widely circulated email reads, in part:

"We have a friend at church who is a very talented artist. For several years she, among many others, has painted ornaments to be hung on the various White House Christmas trees. The WH sends out an invitation to send an ornament and informs the artists of the theme for the year.

"She got her letter from the WH recently. It said that they would not be called Christmas trees this year. They will be called Holiday trees. And, to please not send any ornaments painted with a religious theme."

GM announced today a major restructuring that will involve “doubling” the company’s investment in electric and self-driving cars, but they will pay for it by shutting down factories and laying off thousands of workers.

The company has also confirmed that the Chevy Volt will be discontinued.

Similar to what Ford did earlier this year, GM says that it is moving away from sedans and it is instead focusing on “trucks, crossovers and SUVs.”

They now say that they will prioritize “investments in its next-generation battery-electric architectures”:

“GM now intends to prioritize future vehicle investments in its next-generation battery-electric architectures. As the current vehicle portfolio is optimized, it is expected that more than 75 percent of GM’s global sales volume will come from five vehicle architectures by early next decade.”

CEO Mary Barra said that it would result in doubling the company’s investment in electric vehicles and self-driving technology.

2017, at a rally in Ohio, Donald Trump issued a very specific directive to supporters gathered to hear him speak. “Don’t move, don’t sell your house,” the president told them, claiming that despite the end of the halcyon days of auto manufacturing in the region, “those jobs . . . are all coming back. They’re all coming back.” Continuing as only a carnival barker with no actual understanding of how business or the global economy works could, Trump told the crowd: “We’re going to fill up those factories or rip them down and build new ones.” Instead, this is happening:

GM will effectively halt production next year at five plants in North America—in Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and Ontario—as well as two plants outside of North America.

The company also plans to cut 15 percent of its salaried workers. The cuts will eliminate more than 14,000 jobs in all, roughly 8,100 white collar positions and more than 6,000 factory jobs, according to GM.

In Ohio, the town of Lordstown—located 20 miles from where Trump claimed jobs were coming back in a major way—will lose 1,600 factory jobs. This turn of events probably didn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has watched as the president crowed about saving 1,100 Carrier jobs (the company turned around and laid off 600 workers), or getting Ford to scrap plans to build a plant in Mexico (it later said it would produce its Focus line in China), or convincing Foxxconn to build a plant in Wisconsin (that will employ Chinese workers in exchange for $4.5 billion in taxpayer subsidies), or any of the other logic-defying promises he’s invented on the fly. One group of people who did appear to be caught off-guard by the news was the White House, where the president was none too pleased at having been made to look stupid, after claiming last year that General Motors was announcing a “tremendous number of jobs” specifically in Michigan and Ohio.

Tearing into the company during an interview on Monday, Trump relayed his conversation with C.E.O. Mary Barra to The Wall Street Journal, telling the paper he told her, “I heard you’re closing your plant” and warning that it better not “be closed for long . . . Mary, because if it is you have a problem,” like the 1920s gangster he thinks he is. To the Journal, the president repeated his vague threat about what might happen if the company doesn’t immediately open a new facility in the town where they literally just announced they’ll be closing the existing one. “They better damn well open a new plant there very quickly,” Trump told the paper. “I love Ohio. I told them, ‘you’re playing around with the wrong person.’” Later, speaking with reporters, the president said that he was “very tough” with Barra, saying that he was “not happy” with the news and once again making a bold claim that will probably blow up in his face in short order. “We have a lot of pressure on them,” Trump said. “I have no doubt that in a not-too-distant future, they’ll put something else [in Ohio]. They better put something else in.” He also claimed that his tariffs, which GM warned would “undermine [its] competitiveness against foreign auto producers by . . . [increasing] global costs,” have “nothing to do” with the layoffs.

Democrats: 59,525,244 (53.2% of total popular vote)
Republicans: 50,516,570 (45.1%)

Historic rebuke of President Trump

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The raw vote margin, which is slightly over 9 million, is the largest gap between the two parties in the history of midterms, according to Wasserman. And the 8.1% spread between Democrats and Republicans is, according to Princeton professor Sam Wang, a larger percentage-point differential than in any recent wave midterm election including 1994 (R+7.1%), 2006 (D+8.0%), 2010 (R+7.2%) and 2014 (R+5.7%)

Given those raw vote numbers, you might be wondering why House Democrats didn't pick up even more seats earlier this month. And the answer, in a word, is redistricting. Remember that Republicans controlled a huge number of state legislatures and governor's mansions following their 2010 wave. That control meant the GOP got to draw the congressional lines in lots and lots of states, creating House districts that they believed would make it impossible for them to lose their House majority in the next decade. It took eight of those 10 years for Democrats to seize control, but there's no question that the soon-to-be-majority party's gains would have been far larger if not for the lines drawn by their GOP colleagues eight years ago.

The Point: The 2018 election was not only a Democratic wave. It was one of historical proportions. The end.

But the gerrymandering in the newly Democratic states will make it harder for the Republicans. The judges are a big deal but in the end most of the time they are not as partisan as the house, Senate and state governments.

As its only two years until the major elections. If Trump becomes even more poisonous in the voting public unless the Democrats fuck up this opportunity the Republicans will have to pull away from the President.

An 8.1% percent margin is not a margin of "historic proportions". The point differentials in the 14 midterms prior to 1994:
1990 D+7.8
1986 D+9.9
1982 D+11.8
1978 D+8.9
1974 D+16.8
1970 D+8.7
1966 D+2.7
1962 D+5.3
1958 D+12.4
1954 D+5.5
1950 D+0.7
1946 R+8.5
1942 R+3.8
1938 D+1.2

In half of those elections the margin exceeded 8.1%. And in half of them it did not.

Indy Voter said...

A more interesting measure might be to compare the change in relative percentage of midterm votes over four years. The top four years are all mentioned by Wang - 2010(R+15.2), 1994(R+14.9), 2018(D+13.8), and 2006(D+12.8). No other midterm year from 1942 onward exceeds a 10% shift.

It would be interesting to see what the midterm to midterm changes were for years prior to 1938 to see if/when such swings occurred in previous eras. Those numbers aren't listed on Wikipedia, however.

It''s nowhere near the shellacking Obama and the Democrats got in 2010. However, Obama was still president and the Democrats still (barely) controlled the senate.

They did however lost significant ground in state and local elections that year. A significant loss considering 2010 was also a census year.

As for this year's elections apperently the GOP held there own at the state a local level with one high-profile governors race (Florida) going to the GOP and the other high-profile race (Wisconsin) going to the Democrats.

There is no mention in the media about a Democrat wave at the state and local level.

The bottom line is that well-off suburban voters in blue states gave the Democrats control of the house and those same voters could take it away in the next election.

It won't take long for the Democrats to show what a big mistake those suburban voters made.

GM announced it will shut down five North American factories and cut 15% of its salaried workers. This major restructuring of the company means GM will stop making sedans the car-buying public no longer wants -- like the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Cruze and the Buick LaCrosse -- and focus on SUVs, hatchbacks, crossovers and trucks. The carmaker, which saw decent earnings last quarter, is also making a big bet on new technologies, as it eyes Silicon Valley's push into self-driving cars. The moves will save GM $6 billion a year by the end of 2020. But this will also cost 8,000 salaried workers their jobs. About 6,000 hourly workers will either lose their jobs or be reassigned to other plants.
