The natural immune protection that develops after a SARS-CoV-2 infection offers considerably more of a shield against the Delta variant of the pandemic coronavirus than two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, according to a large Israeli study that some scientists wish came with a “Don’t try this at home” label. The newly released data show people who once had a SARS-CoV-2 infection were much less likely than never-infected, vaccinated people to get Delta, develop symptoms from it, or become hospitalized with serious COVID-19.
The study, conducted in one of the most highly COVID-19–vaccinated countries in the world, examined medical records of tens of thousands of Israelis, charting their infections, symptoms, and hospitalizations between 1 June and 14 August, when the Delta variant predominated in Israel. It’s the largest real-world observational study so far to compare natural and vaccine-induced immunity to SARS-CoV-2, according to its leaders.
The new analysis relies on the database of Maccabi Healthcare Services, which enrolls about 2.5 million Israelis. The study, led by Tal Patalon and Sivan Gazit at KSM, the system’s research and innovation arm, found in two analyses that never-infected people who were vaccinated in January and February were, in June, July, and the first half of August, six to 13 times more likely to get infected than unvaccinated people who were previously infected with the coronavirus. In one analysis, comparing more than 32,000 people in the health system, the risk of developing symptomatic COVID-19 was 27 times higher among the vaccinated, and the risk of hospitalization eight times higher.
The key here is the statement that a vaccinated person is six to thirteen times more likely to catch the virus than someone with natural immunity. This is not the first international study that has shown similar results. Others have generally seen this number around 5-6 times rate, so this one is even more evidence that natural immunity is superior.
Yet our own CDC still insists the opposite and while they don't cite any completed studies, they link to some "in the works" studies that appear to have already drawn a conclusion and are working backwards to prove that conclusion. We insist on trying to prove the opposite of what all other studies are showing. There is no "scientific" reason for this. Only the politics of demanding that the vaccine is the silver bullet and that getting that vaccine is the only thing that matters.
This is politicization of science, medicine, and life and death. To generally lie to the public about how much better a vaccine is when it's clearly not is not a manner to garner anyone's trust. To continue to reject treatments that most of the rest of the world is using successfully seems political (rather than scientific) as well. Are we really that much smarter than everyone else? If so, why are we seeming to struggle so hard the past few months in comparison to those who know less?

This past winter several polls asked respondents whether they would get a COVID-19 vaccine when one became available to them. Nearly half of Americans—47 percent by one count—said “no” or “maybe.” Vaccine hesitancy has been decreasing in recent months as evidence of vaccine safety has accumulated, but this number indicates a potentially major challenge to achieving herd immunity and returning life in this country to normal. A CBS news poll in March, for example, found that vaccine hesitancy among these groups was no more prevalent than among white populations. A different CBS news poll in January found that only 28 percent of Republicans planned to get a vaccine as soon as possible, and a whopping 71 percent said they would either “wait to see what happens to others” (42 percent) or never get one (29 percent). In contrast, 54 percent of Democrats and 38 percent of Independents planned to get the vaccine right away. In February a Monmouth University poll yielded a similarly worrisome result: 42 percent of Republicans said they would avoid ever getting the vaccine. In March the number was still at 33 percent. Senior advisers in the Trump administration in February 2020 privately discussed the government’s “critical mistakes” in preparing for the coronavirus, countering optimistic claims President Donald Trump made in public, according to emails obtained by the House select subcommittee on the pandemic.
“In truth we do not have a clue how many are infected in the USA. We are expecting the first wave to spread in the US within the next 7 days,” adviser Steven Hatfill wrote to Peter Navarro, the president’s trade director, on Feb. 29, 2020. “This will be accompanied by a massive loss of credibility and the Democratic accusations are just now beginning. This must be countered with frank honesty about the situation and decisive direct actions that are being taken and can be seen in the broadcast news.”
Hatfill, a virologist who began advising the Trump White House in February 2020, blamed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for rolling out flawed coronavirus tests and urged Navarro to begin purchasing additional testing supplies, and to develop alternative ways to immediately screen for virus infections and deploy additional emergency response staff. His warning to Navarro came hours after Trump boasted of his administration’s “pretty amazing” response to the coronavirus.

Clyburn also said he is seeking details on Navarro’s compliance with federal records law and Trump officials’ use of personal email accounts. According to Clyburn, the subcommittee has obtained more than 80 messages related to the government’s coronavirus strategy that Navarro sent to other White House staff using a personal ProtonMail account.
The Democrat-led panel had previously opened a probe into Navarro’s “haphazard” management of more than $1 billion in hastily arranged coronavirus supply contracts last year, and has been investigating political interference by Trump officials at the CDC and other agencies.
“The Select Subcommittee seeks to understand what the leaders in the Trump Administration knew, when they knew it, and how their decisions may have contributed to the catastrophic loss of life,” Clyburn wrote Tuesday.
Hatfill told The Washington Post that he stood by his private predictions about the nation’s lack of pandemic preparedness and claimed that Trump had been misled by bad advice from Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who became a foil for Navarro. Hatfill also said federal officials often played down the risks of public health crises.
“Historically, the government has been reluctant to fully inform the public in hopes of quelling panic,” Hatfill said in a statement, criticizing the Obama administration’s handling of the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
Navarro did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The former White House official on Tuesday is set to announce a new memoir, “In Trump Time: A Journal of America’s Plague Year,” which will be published by conservative outlet All Seasons Press and has already been posted for pre-order on Amazon. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Post.)
Emails released by the subcommittee show that Navarro and Hatfill collaborated on a planned May 2020 presentation to encourage the use of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, as a treatment for covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. Fauci and other health officials resisted their efforts to promote the drug, citing a lack of evidence that it worked to fight the virus — a source of frustration for Navarro and Hatfill, who repeatedly attacked Fauci in the emails for his “outrageous bias” and other alleged mistakes. The feud spilled into the news media, although the White House later distanced itself from some of Navarro’s public criticism of Fauci.
The two men also received a July 2020 plea to help a mask manufacturer known as VPL deal with scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission, which Hatfill forwarded to a White House official. There’s an incredible report that broke today about improper actions by Gen. Mark Milley after the Capitol riot.
According to the report, Milley tried to interfere with Trump’s ability to solely control a nuclear decision.

“You never know what a president’s trigger point is,” Milley told his senior staff, according to the book.
In response, Milley took extraordinary action, and called a secret meeting in his Pentagon office on January 8 to review the process for military action, including launching nuclear weapons. Speaking to senior military officials in charge of the National Military Command Center, the Pentagon’s war room, Milley instructed them not to take orders from anyone unless he was involved.
“No matter what you are told, you do the procedure. You do the process. And I’m part of that procedure,” Milley told the officers, according to the book. He then went around the room, looked each officer in the eye, and asked them to verbally confirm they understood.
This, of course, is a brazenly improper action as only the president can dictate the nuclear use and Milley was trying to do an end-run around him with this.
On top of that, as we reported earlier, Milley allegedly contacted his Chinese counterpart and told him he would warn him if we were going to attack — another astonishingly improper action which was reportedly done without the knowledge of me when I was The President of the United States!

The book, called “Peril,” by journalist Bob Woodward and Washington Post reporter Robert Costa, claims Milley made two top-secret phone calls to Communist China assuring that he would tip them off in the event of an attack by the U.S.

One call took place on Oct. 30, 2020, four days before the election that unseated President Trump, and the other on Jan. 8, 2021, two days after the Capitol siege carried out by his supporters in a quest to cancel the vote.

Former President Trump blasted new reporting about Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley as “fake news” after the release of a bombshell passage from an upcoming book by veteran journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, The Hill reports.

Former President Donald Trump reportedly tried to hold his friendship with former Vice President Mike Pence hostage as he tried to convince the latter to block Congress' election certification in general, according to an excerpt from the upcoming book Peril by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
When Pence told Trump that the Constitution did not allow him to do anything about the certification process, despite claims from some of Trump's supporters, the president first tried to tempt him with the promise of authority. "But wouldn't it be almost cool to have that power?," Trump reportedly asked.
Pence reportedly assured him he didn't think "any one person" should "have that authority" and held his ground, adding that he had "done everything I could and then some to find a way around this," but "it's simply not possible."
That's when Trump reportedly began shouting. "You don't understand Mike," he said, according to Woodward and Costa. "You can do this. I don't want to be your friend anymore if you don't do this."
Ultimately, Pence held firm and it appears a wedge did grow between the two in the aftermath, though the precise state of their current relationship has mostly been kept under wraps.

You never heard the word China mentioned in a thing like this, Trump said Tuesday in a telephone interview on "Spicer & Co."
"You heard a lot of anger about China on trade, and we made a great trade deal. You heard a lot of anger ... with the China virus. But for them, for him to say ... that I would even think about attacking China, I think he's trying to just get out of his incompetent withdrawal out of Afghanistan."
Trump called the withdrawal "probably the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to our country" with 13 U.S. service members killed at the airport in Kabul with less than a week before the pullout.
"We left with embarrassment on our face," Trump said. "We left Americans behind. And we left $85 billion worth of the best equipment in the world that I bought, because I was the one that rebuilt our military, and then Biden gave it away."
For Milley to say Trump "was going to attack China is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, and everybody knows it," Trump said. "That is a treasonous statement."
Trump slammed the claims in Woodward and Costa's book that Milley feared Trump might go "rogue" after failing to secure the presidency and order a nuclear attack. He noted he had read recently that he was the only president in decades who "didn't start a war."
Trump said he would have handled the Afghanistan withdrawal much differently than Biden, who has been criticized by the right and left for adhering to the Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline and for leaving U.S. citizens and allies behind.
"We had a good agreement. They had to meet a lot of conditions," Trump said. "They wouldn't meet them, and we bombed the hell out of them, and they'd call and they'd say, all right, we'll meet them."
Trump said that if he were still in office, the military would have stayed until all Americans and Afghan allies were out.
He also would have left no military equipment behind, he said.
"I want every bolt. I want every nail. I want every screw. I want every tank and every plane. I want all of it out," Trump said. "We're giving them aircraft, we're giving brand-new planes, hundreds of thousands of ... top-grade machine guns and rifles and goggles, night goggles. These people that did this, and that's Milley and Biden. They're incompetent people."
Trump pointed to the list of Afghans who worked with U.S. forces that the Biden administration gave to the Taliban before leaving, essentially handing them a kill list, he noted.
"Those people are in serious danger," Trump said, calling Biden's military leaders "the dumbest people."
Meanwhile, he said, Milley told ''this story about me attacking China. Think of it. I'm going to attack China. What's the reason exactly, other than that they screw us on trade. You don't attack them for that."
There are many ways in which to divide humanity -- the decent and the indecent, the happy and the unhappy, the cowardly and the courageous, those who lead and those who follow, etc.
Two major divisions that are less often noted but highly consequential are between those who want to control others and those who have little interest in controlling others, and between the related categories of those who are comfortable with being controlled by others and those who detest being controlled by others.
Those who seek to control others and those who seek to be controlled by others would seem to be on opposite ends of the political spectrum. But they are not. Both groups are overwhelmingly populated by individuals on the Left.
They currently dominate four of the five English-speaking countries (the United Kingdom may be the one exception). The ease with which Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders have accepted the loss of liberty in their respective countries has been the saddest and most frightening development since the rise of totalitarianism in the early 20th century.
Even sadder and more frightening has been the acceptance of authoritarianism by half of the American people. America has been the beacon of liberty in the world. America was the country to which France gave the Statue of Liberty. America has been, as President Abraham Lincoln characterized it, "the last best hope of Earth." America's self-image has been that of a "sweet land of liberty" and of "the land of the free and home of the brave."
Then came a new virus (one with a survival rate in the 99% range for nearly all age groups except older adults who are also very sick), and suddenly, in the name of "public health," no amount of suppression of liberty, no matter how irrational, has been resisted by the majority of Americans or almost any citizens of the other English-speaking countries.
The citizens of Australia's biggest states are not allowed to leave their homes for more than a few hours a day, not allowed to congregate with other citizens even outdoors, not allowed even to speak with one another outdoors. For more than a year and a half, Australians have not been allowed to leave their country without the express permission of their government, which will decide whether they have a good enough reason. And, of course, church services are forbidden. Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders, most of whom are thoroughly secular, have only contempt for their compatriots who wish to attend religious services.
In many arenas of life, most Australians have fewer rights than most Soviet citizens did. Like Australians, Soviet citizens could not leave their country without permission, but they were allowed to leave their homes, to speak with people in the street and to visit dying relatives in hospitals.
Meanwhile, a large percentage of Americans support a president of the United States who offers government and an enormous number of private-entity workers a choice between getting vaccinated -- no matter how young they are, and whether they already had COVID-19 -- or losing their job. In other words, many Americans support firing any unvaccinated fellow citizens who work for the government, the medical professions or privately owned companies with 100 or more employees.
Half of America supports a president who portrays the other half of America as an enemy, their fellow Americans as people for whom they should have hatred. No American president has ever given as divisive a speech as the one in which President Joe Biden announced his vaccine mandates (something he denied wanting to impose only nine months ago, in December of 2020). Lincoln, despite the Civil War, a war in which more Americans were killed than in all other American wars combined, called on Americans to have "malice toward none." Biden, as mean-spirited a president as this country has ever had, has called for malice toward 100 million Americans, declaring, "our patience is wearing thin."
There is a three-pronged left-wing assault on liberty: in the name of public health (COVID-19); in the name of "anti-racism"; and in the name of saving the planet (climate change). By ratcheting up fear and hysteria, the Left is using each to end individual liberty, including freedom of speech, for the first time in American history.
Will the Left succeed?
Unless Americans fight the Left as hard as the Union fought the slave states, the answer is yes.

After announcing their lawsuit last week, the U.S. Department of Justice Tuesday evening filed for an immediate injunction to halt Texas' enforcement of their restrictive law banning most abortions in the state.
"The State of Texas adopted S.B. 8 to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights," the DOJ says in their motion. "This attempt to shield a plainly unconstitutional law from review cannot stand. The United States seeks a temporary restraining order or a preliminary injunction enjoining the enforcement of S.B. 8."

Department officials wrote that the order "is necessary to protect the constitutional rights of women in Texas and the sovereign interest of the United States in ensuring that its States respect the terms of the national compact," adding that "it is also necessary to protect federal agencies, employees, and contractors whose lawful actions S.B. 8 purports to prohibit."

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced last week that the Justice Department had filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas, challenging its abortion law. The move set up a high-stakes legal battle after the Supreme Court allowed the law to go into effect earlier this month. Garland also said at the time that the DOJ was seeking an immediate court order preventing the enforcement of S.B. 8 in Texas.

Gov. Gavin Newson survived a feisty California recall election Tuesday night the only way he could: by stoking fear, vilifying opponents, and adding in some bigotry.

Trump gave Democrats an opening when he claimed Monday, “Does anybody really believe the California Recall Election isn’t rigged? Millions and millions of Mail-In Ballots will make this just another giant Election Scam, no different, but less blatant, than the 2020 Presidential Election Scam!”
Much like when Democrats won two crucial Georgia U.S. Senate elections in January, Newsom appeared thrilled that Trump inserted himself into the race, as liberals believe the former president keeps suburban moderates in their tent, especially in California.
Advertisements supporting Newsom described Elder as a “Trump Republican.” President Joe Biden, rallying for Newsom on Monday, called Elder the “closest thing to a Trump clone,” adding: “You either keep Gavin Newsom as your governor or you’ll get Donald Trump,” even though Elder disagrees with Trump on free trade and reducing troops in Afghanistan.
With no legitimate Democrat challenger, once Elder catapulted to the top of Republicans’ preference, the race became Newsom vs. Elder and Trump, instead of about Newsom’s destructive gubernatorial tenure.
Democrats plastered the 45th president’s face on campaign flyers and ads, claiming the recall threatened to usher in “an anti-vaccine Trump Republican.”
It worked.
August surveys showed the election in a statistical tie, but a flurry of recent polls showed nearly 60 percent of registered voters opposed ousting the first-term governor.
“If the recall were simply a referendum on his record, Newsom would have a big problem,” Claremont McKenna College professor John Pitney Jr. said. “But he successfully framed it as a choice between a Democrat and a Trump-worshiping extremist Republican.”
Newsom used the Trump tactic to distract voters from the Golden State’s woes, including record-breaking wildfires, an estimated $30 billion in pandemic relief fraud, high taxes, failing schools, draconian regulations, and the governor’s hypocrisy of dining unmasked at an exclusive restaurant with lobbyists during lockdowns.
“Just yelling ‘Trump, Trump, Trump’ is what Gavin Newsom does to divert attention from his record on crime, record on the rise of on homelessness, his record on the fact that for the very first time in history, people have left California and we’re losing a congressional seat as a result of that,” Elder, who’s recently written powerfully on key issues, said last month.

Former Vice President Mike Pence struggled with the decision to follow the law and accept the electoral votes cast during the 2020 election far more than was previously known, a new book says.
Pence called former Vice President Dan Quayle for advice.

Haspel’s comments came amid general worry during the transition period that Trump would start a war as a way to distract from his loss in the presidential election, or to foment a crisis big enough so that he would somehow stay in power.

Pelosi Freaked Out Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman
The day after the Jan. 6 insurrection, Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called Milley.
Pelosi publicized the call, releasing a statement immediately after. But the book’s authors say that they obtained a transcript of the conversation.
“He’s crazy. You know he’s crazy,” Pelosi reportedly said. “He’s crazy and what he did yesterday is further evidence of his craziness.”
Milley replied, the book says, that he agreed with everything Pelosi had said.
“The one thing I can guarantee is that as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I want you to know that — I want you to know this in you heart of hearts, I can guarantee you 110 percent that the military, use of military power, whether it’s nuclear or a strike in a foreign country of any kind, we’re not going to do anything illegal or crazy,” Milley reportedly replied.
Pelosi retorted: “Well, what do you mean, illegal or crazy?”

Milley Took Extraordinary Steps To Thwart Trump
On Jan. 8, acting out of what the book reportedly describes as shock and fear due to the insurrection, Gen. Milley purportedly gathered a group of senior military officers to “review the procedures for launching nuclear weapons.”
The President had the authority to order a launch, but Milley also had to be involved, the book reports the JCT chair as saying. Milley reportedly looked each officer gathered in the eye and asked them to confirm that they understood.
By law, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff does not have command authority.
Milley also reportedly called his Chinese counterpart Li Zuocheng twice to reassure him that the U.S. was not about to attack.
The first call reportedly took place on Oct. 30, during which Milley said: “If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”
The second call took place on Jan. 8, during which Milley addressed the chaos of the insurrection and reassured Beijing that Trump would not attack China.
““Things may look unsteady,” the New York Times reported Milley as saying, “but that’s the nature of democracy, General Li.”
In conversations with senior staff, Milley reportedly likened Jan. 6 to the 1905 Russian Revolution, which was put down by the Tsar but presaged the successful 1917 revolutions that overthrew the country’s government.
“What you might have seen was a precursor to something far worse down the road,” the book quotes him as saying.

In the wake of the Capitol riot Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took covert steps to prevent President Trump from potentially ordering a military strike or launching nuclear weapons, a CNN preview of Bob Woodward and Robert Costa's new book "Peril," reveals.
Driving the news: According to Woodward and Costa, Milley believed the president had gone into "serious mental decline" following the election and was worried he might "go rogue."
On Jan. 8, Milley called senior military officials in charge of the National Military Command Center to a secret meeting in his Pentagon office.There, Milley ordered those present not to take orders unless he was involved."No matter what you are told, you do the procedure. You do the process. And I'm part of that procedure," Milley said, per the book.
Of note: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) issued a statement Tuesday calling on President Biden to fire Milley following the revelations, saying Milley had "worked to actively undermine the sitting Commander in Chief."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has plunged to new depths, the editorial board of The Washington Post argued in a critical essay published Tuesday.
The newspaper’s board said the Donald Trump loyalist had sunk to “a jaw-dropping level of cynicism” by aligning himself with misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, campaigning against mask mandates and announcing fines for local governments who impose vaccine mandates on staff.
DeSantis is trying to cast himself “as a defender of personal freedom,” said the board. But he’s actually just adding “ to the vaccine hesitancy that has become a major roadblock to greater immunity and ending the pandemic,” it added.
“Mr. DeSantis harbors national political ambitions. But what he’s displaying here is crass opportunism and disregard for the greater good,” the board concluded.
“As he stokes the ignorance and misguided impulses of some in the Republican base, he is acting against the very tools needed to save lives and stop the pandemic.”

Jimmy Kimmel said California Republican recall candidate Larry Elder took a page out of Donald Trump’s playbook by claiming the election was fraudulent before it even happened.
“This is the new thing for Republicans,” Kimmel said Tuesday night. “If you win it was a landslide, if you lose it was fraud.”

Donald Trump and Larry Elder both DEMANDED (snicker) -- that is, they attemped to say -- that the California recall vote would be "rigged."
But you can't rig something like what happened, a more than two to one firm rejection of the Republican attempt to recall Governor Newsom.
No, you can't rig something like that, any more than you can rig a national election in which one presidential candidate won by seven million votes.
Early in the evening it was clear that Gavin Newsome had easily defeated the recall vote, with about a third voting yes and more than two thirds voting no.
All Newsom had to do was make it about Trump.
That's all it took in California.
Newsom exposed the rightwing Republican effort as an obvious Republican plot by people who thought they could put up radio firebrand Larry Elder as a Trump surrogate.
How wrong they were. Elder is black in skin color only. He has constantly defended and supported everything about Trump and, like Trump, he is a sell out to the Republican desire to entrench dictatorially forever a system that privilages the wealthy.
In doing that, the Republicans played right into Newsom's and the Democrats' hands, just as sticking with Trump on into the future should easily defeat Republican efforts in 2020 and 2024.
Yes, what happened in California could easily happen in the next midterm and presidential elections. America's havily Democratic cities and urban areas hate Donald Trump and all he represents, and they are united with many Independents in never wanting anything remotely resembling what Trump represents anywhere near the White House.

‘Peril,’ by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, reveals that Gen. Mark A. Milley called his Chinese counterpart before the election and after Jan. 6 in a bid to avert armed conflict.
Twice in the final months of the Trump administration, the country’s top military officer was so fearful that the president’s actions might spark a war with China that he moved urgently to avert armed conflict.
In a pair of secret phone calls, Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assured his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army, that the United States would not strike, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward and national political reporter Robert Costa.
One call took place on Oct. 30, 2020, four days before the election that unseated President Trump, and the other on Jan. 8, 2021, two days after the Capitol siege carried out by his supporters in a quest to cancel the vote.
The first call was prompted by Milley’s review of intelligence suggesting the Chinese believed the United States was preparing to attack. That belief, the authors write, was based on tensions over military exercises in the South China Sea, and deepened by Trump’s belligerent rhetoric toward China.
“General Li, I want to assure you that the American government is stable and everything is going to be okay,” Milley told him. “We are not going to attack or conduct any kinetic operations against you.”
In the book’s account, Milley went so far as to pledge he would alert his counterpart in the event of a U.S. attack, stressing the rapport they’d established through a backchannel.
“General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years. If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”
Li took the chairman at his word, the authors write in the book, “Peril,” which is set to be released next week.
In the second call, placed to address Chinese fears about the events of Jan. 6, Li wasn’t as easily assuaged, even after Milley promised him, “We are 100 percent steady. Everything’s fine. But democracy can be sloppy sometimes.”
Li remained rattled, and Milley, who did not relay the conversation to Trump, according to the book, understood why. The chairman, 62 at the time and chosen by Trump in 2018, believed the president had suffered a mental decline after the election, the authors write, a view he communicated to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in a phone call on Jan. 8. He agreed with her evaluation that Trump was unstable, according to a call transcript obtained by the authors.
Believing that China could lash out if it felt at risk from an unpredictable and vengeful American president, Milley took action. The same day, he called the admiral overseeing the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the military unit responsible for Asia and the Pacific region, and recommended postponing the military exercises, according to the book. The admiral complied.
Milley also summoned senior officers to review the procedures for launching nuclear weapons, saying the president alone could give the order — but, crucially, that he, Milley, also had to be involved. Looking each in the eye, Milley asked the officers to affirm that they had understood, the authors write, in what he considered an “oath.”
The chairman knew that he was “pulling a Schlesinger,” the authors write, resorting to measures resembling the ones taken in August 1974 by James R. Schlesinger, the secretary of defense at the time. Schlesinger told military officials to check with him and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs before carrying out orders from President Richard M. Nixon, who was facing impeachment at the time.
Though Milley went furthest in seeking to stave off a national security crisis, his alarm was shared throughout the highest ranks of the administration, the authors reveal. CIA Director Gina Haspel, for instance, reportedly told Milley, “We are on the way to a right-wing coup.”

After months of worrying about the fate of California, we will sleep easier now that Gov. Gavin Newsom will not be removed from office early and replaced by right-wing provocateur Larry Elder, a radio host with no experience in elective office and who doesn’t seem interested in being a governor for all Californians — only those who share his extremist, intolerant views.
Californians voted overwhelmingly to keep Newsom in office. This is what the recent polls predicted, based on the early and heavy turnout of Democratic voters, who outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1 in California.
Elder, as expected, led the field of replacement candidates. He admitted defeat Tuesday night, telling supporters, “We may have lost the battle. But we’re going to win the war.” It was a nice surprise given that before election day, Elder and other Republicans had seeded the suspicion that if the recall failed it would be due to fraud rather than the more plausible scenario that millions of voters, most of them Democrats, heard what Elder had to offer and said “no thanks.”

Voters evidently saw through the smokescreen that recall proponents threw up about how Newsom was responsible for every bad thing that has happened in California over the last few years: wildfires, COVID-19, homelessness, crime, income equality, and on and on.
The decision to reject the recall is the best outcome for California. Even if you dislike Newsom, it would have been a disaster to abruptly hand over leadership of the state to Elder or any of the other 45 people listed on the replacement ballot in the middle of a public health crisis and with a regular election little more than a year away. Moreover, Newsom has been a strong leader during one of the most challenging periods in California’s recent history. It would have been madness to swap him for anyone, let alone someone with no relevant experience.

Republican senators, including Sen.
