Have you been awake through the events in Venezuela, from Chavez to Maduro? If so, how can you question that it's possible?

Really besides the point. Certainly if Trump planned a military coup to declare himself dictator and suspend all elections in the future... well then, that would be a pretty significant manner of harming Democracy.

It could be argued that our Previous administration apparently using the executive branch powers to undercut the Trump campaign on numerous fronts was a means of keeping the same Party in power... and could be definitely argued to be a threat to our Democracy.

But what was being argued by the NYT wasn't that Trump was going to suspend elections or front a military coup... but that just the actions of confronting the deep state, criticizing the media, wielding a heavy hand with his appointees, and supporting policy (that liberals don't like) is what they consider a threat to Democracy... as if Democracy is really represented by lifelong Washington insiders, the Political class, and the liberal establishment media, rather than represented by elected leaders.

A President doesn't have to yield to opposition, and this President doesn't have an obligation to yield to the "resistance" as a means to perverse democracy. ANOTHER, completely distinct way, is through sheer incompetence.

I am not sure that you are offering much of a difference between the two. They sound like the same thing, only slightly different descriptions.

I would argue that even Richard Nixon (who resigned in shame) did not degrade or otherwise harm democracy... only degraded himself. In fact, Democracy did not change one iota after he left office. We continued to have elections every two year to elect a new congress and every four years to elect a new President.

As far as the "office of the Presidency" - I might offer that it's at least as dangerous to have your deep state, your political class, and your media treat the President with a lack of respect that the office generally requires... as it is for the President to behave in a manner that some might argue is not "Presidential".

After all... Trump was elected while behaving pretty much exactly as he is behaving as President. So the "people" are actually getting "exactly" what the "people" voted for. In fact, it's actually a trait that many of our previous Presidents didn't follow through with. Our previous President campaigned on being more bi-partisan and more inclusive than McCain (who has a fairly significant history of being bi-partisan) and ended up being arguably the most partisan and noninclusive President in modern times.

More over, the so called "resistance" is actually a specific design to "undo" the election results and make sure that the person who was elected is unable to do his job... and to do so by any means... other than (apparently) winning back the House or the Senate (which are the only real legitimate ways to change political course in democracy). It shouldn't be up to Judges to flaunt the rule of law to rule against his policies (out of spite) or up to deep state employees to under mine or under cut his Presidency.

If you want to stop him, you do what the GOP did in 2010 and win back congress.

The reality is that if you want to argue that a "bad President" somehow harms Democracy, then it really boils down to completely subjective opinion as to what constitutes good and bad... and ultimately that subjective opinion will end up carrying the day on that first Tuesday in November.

C.H. It's extremely likely that neither of our last two Presidents (Trump or Obama) would have gotten past the cursory interview process if we actually chose a President in the same ways we chose private industry leadership. We would probably always go with people who have Governor experience or possibly high level military leadership. A former community organizer who was a one term Senator, or a real estate tycoon and reality television star would probably not fit the bill.

But even when the public choose someone like Richard Nixon or Jimmy Carter or whoever else was considered a failure, Democracy moved forward because we have the means to replace them fairly quickly (in the grand scheme of relativity).

The dangers to our Democracy does not lie with our elected leaders (their success or failure is technically irrelevant to that - especially considering most of that is subjective).

The danger comes from the political class and lifelong D.C. players who expect to have probably more control and power than they should. These are not elected people. They do not represent Democracy... and when they specifically go after our elected leaders and attempt to undercut their authority and their ability to perform their duties... all because they believe that "Democracy" got it wrong.

Then I would hope you would understand (Donald Trump aside) why this is a problem?C.H.
