Officials said FBI Director James B. Comey was dismissed after senior Justice Department officials concluded he had violated department principles and procedures by publicly discussing an investigation of Clinton’s use of private email. Just last week, President Trump publicly accused Comey of giving Clinton, his Democratic challenger for president, “a free pass for many bad deeds’’ when he decided not to recommend criminal charges in the case.
“The FBI’s reputation and credibility have suffered substantial damage, and it has affected the entire Department of Justice,’’ Rosenstein wrote. “I cannot defend the director’s handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton’s emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgment that he was mistaken. Almost everyone agrees that the director made serious mistakes; it is one of the few issues that unites people of diverse perspectives.’’

President Donald Trump on Tuesday unexpectedly fired FBI Director James Comey, plunging the capital into confusion and immediately intensifying calls for a special prosecutor to assume control of the highly sensitive investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The reason for the firing, according to White House and Justice Department officials, was Mr. Comey’s much-criticized handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state. The White House said Mr. Trump relied on the recommendations of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
The Trump administration released a memo from Mr. Rosenstein who offered a blistering assessment of Mr. Comey’s conduct, calling his actions “troubling” and saying he had harmed the FBI’s credibility and had refused to learn from his errors.

I can speak out in ways that get the others to stay with the program tell me that I have inspired them. In my five years, I don't know how many lives I may have saved. I speak out, and well, I don't know how to say it, but I'm a persuasive and help them take the first step. I'm not bragging, I admit that I have faults, but still stay sober. It feels just fantastic. But still humble and going one day at a time. Several of them say that I bring an aura that fills the room. I never thought I had that ability. But it feels so good.
WP, I suspect Trump thought Comey was his man because of how his actions helped Trump get elected. It likely only dawned on him a few days ago that Comey's interest is in what is right, by the law, and not in supporting Trump no matter what.
In short, Comey outlived his usefulness to Trump, so he had to go.
It's doubtful Trump will nominate a replacement with the same priorities as Comey.
Indy, both sides wanted Comey to go for different reasons. That's not surprising. But the timing because of his impulsive behavior, he will be facing an independent investigation, and like Nixon, he won't be in control. I strongly believe that there will be evidence that supports the Russian involvement and the Trump campaign will be tied together. We shall see.
