Clinton raises 68 million... Trump raises 51 million....

Considering Trump raised only one million in May and has not run any advertising as of yet, the 51 million dollar haul is probably a welcome sign for those who have been concerned with his lack of effort on the fundraising front.

Probably better news is that the support came from over 400,000 people, 94% of them giving under $200. This shows a grass roots support, rather than the high income maximum amount donors associated with Mitt Romney, and other previous GOP nominees. It also provides a strong base to come back to, as many times these small donors will give multiple times.

Trump also holds the ace in the hole of being in a position to self fund a significant amount. He nearly completely self funded his primary bid ($50 million) and is said to be prepared to fork over more for the general election, or possibly "loan" his campaign money along the way.

Lastly, the RNC has completely been dominant over the DNC in raising money over the past year or so... meaning that Trump will likely benefit from generic Party spending, as well as what will likely be another record setting election in spending from outside groups. At some point in time (and I think we have gotten well past that point in recent elections) there is a definite law of diminishing returns on how much money is spent on elections.

Bottom line is that Trump doesn't need to match Hillary dollar for dollar to compete. He probably only needs to keep it reasonably close moving forward. There is also something deep inside my gut that says that this is an election where the candidates actually matter more than the money being spent on their behalf.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Tannenbaum is admitting that whereas a week ago it looked as if Donald's campaign looked "basically broke," he has now clearly shown that he has the wherewithal to compete financially with Clinton.

That "should reassure Republicans that he is capable of major-league fundraising and will be able to run a real campaign" and "...at least have the cash to carpet bomb the swing states with attack ads."

Bad news for our side, good news for yours.
