Rosalynn and I share our sympathies with the Castro family and the Cuban people on the death of Fidel Castro. We remember fondly our visits with him in Cuba and his love of his country. We wish the Cuban citizens peace and prosperity in the years ahead.
Jimmy Carter
Asshole of the first degree. Exhibit A why a Democrat should never be elected commander in chief.
Today the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castro's legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental rights.
While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in freedom they so richly deserve.
“At this time of Fidel Castro’s passing, we extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people. Today, we offer condolences to Fidel Castro’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Cuban people. In the days ahead, they will recall the past and also look to the future. As they do, the Cuban people must know that they have a friend and partner in the United States of America.” --President Barack Obama
Some time in the next few weeks, a military commander will sit down with President-elect Trump and explain to him how to use nuclear weapons and the consequences thereof.
Once he is inaugurated, he will be given a card that he needs to start the procedure. In addition, everywhere he goes he will be followed by a military aide who will carry a black satchel containing the nuclear codes, informally known as the "nuclear football."
Trump will be given highly detailed instructions on exactly what he must do to launch a nuclear attack. He will also be instructed on the consequences of such an attack, as well as the fallout, both radioactive and political.
For someone who doesn't like sitting down and getting detailed briefings that he is required to understand thoroughly, it could be unpleasant. John F. Kennedy was ashen faced after he got the briefing.
It is not known how Trump will react until he gets the briefing, or how he will behave after he gets it. He is known to be impulsive and will be told in no uncertain terms that once a missile is fired, there is no way to stop it from reaching its target. David FreddosoVerified account @freddoso I just got around to reading PM Trudeau's statement, and I'm suddenly a lot less embarrassed about my country electing Trump.
"At this time of Fidel Castro's passing, we extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people. We know that this moment fills Cubans - in Cuba and in the United States - with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Cuban nation. History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.
"For nearly six decades, the relationship between the United States and Cuba was marked by discord and profound political disagreements. During my presidency, we have worked hard to put the past behind us, pursuing a future in which the relationship between our two countries is defined not by our differences but by the many things that we share as neighbors and friends - bonds of family, culture, commerce, and common humanity. This engagement includes the contributions of Cuban Americans, who have done so much for our country and who care deeply about their loved ones in Cuba.

We'll see how "meaningless" Obama's approval ratings are when he, a very young "elder statesman," starts making policy judgments and pronouncements as an ex- (acting) President.

He understands neither. It would have been better if he said nothing then give condolence to Castro's murdering brother Raul and the Cuban people who would happily tap dance on Castro's grave if they weren't afraid of being killed.
Turns out that Obama is more popular in Cuba than either Raúl Castro or brother Fidel Castro.
A new poll finds that 80% of Cubans have a positive view of Obama, while only 17% have a negative view.
Meanwhile, 48% of Cubans have a negative view of Raúl Castro, and 50% have a negative view of Fidel Castro.
The poll, based on 1,200 in-person interviews, was conducted by Bendixen & Amandi and commissioned by Fusion and Univision...
From NPR News: "The poll also found that Cubans are optimistic that a new, warmer relationship with the United States will lead to political and economic change on the island. Cubans also expressed widespread dissatisfaction with with the current situation on the island." ____________ 80% is pretty high. :-)

The old guy is just repeating old patterns I guess. Ford was ready to bomb Castro into oblivion but decided to wait until after the election. But Carter won, and was working to normalize relations until Castro stabbed us in the back again in Africa.

They'd be meaningful indeed if Trump follows my wild plan and nominates Obama to the Supreme Court. Who knows, maybe Obama would sit in judgment over Hillary Clinton someday, after a long-overdue prosecution takes place. That's something I'd love to see.

A real commander in chief.
I didn't post Obama's statement because quite frankly there was nothing to post.

Like I said, Obama's statement was nothing. Only James would waste computer bytes by posting it.
Obama was a diplomat. Trump is a con artist fool.
Why automatically alienate the Cuban people who in some ways liked Fidel?
Obama on Gallup today:
56% JOB APPROVAL
vs
40% disapproval
I think Obama and especially John Kerry already did a fine job of alienating the Cuban people.
Far from diplomatic, Obama's statement ignoring Castro's many crimes against his people is nothing short of immoral.
Of the Democrats, only Nancy Pelosi had a surprisingly strong statement against Castro.
Trump had it exactly right.
Obama's policies had a surprisingly strong rebuck on November 8 and James is still quoting meaningless job approval polls.

Pretty sure Obama would need to recuse himself on matters related to Obamacare if he were a Justice.
