Classic media manipulation...

So when hackers wandered their way into the private email accounts of the D.N.C. and the Hillary Clinton campaigns, exposing embarrassing and politically damaging information about the Democratic Party and the Democratic candidate for President...

The leaked information itself was buried by most media outlets, there were attempts to shut down Wikileaks, and the media for the most part focused on the actions of the hackers, Wikileaks, and how unfair it was that this information may have damaged Clinton's election chances.

Oh, and none of the information leaked was classified, detrimental to the country, or otherwise carried any sort of national security risk. It wasn't even Government information, but rather information from private political organizations that had little or no cyber-security in place. Those responsible for the hack did not commit any real criminal behavior above and beyond the actions of hacking a private email server.
_______

But when the FBI is monitoring the phone calls of a future National Security advisory (possibly illegally since he was a private citizen at the time)... and information regarding these phone calls was leaked to the press (which is by all standards a crime)... the same media went full blast in an attempt to report on the subject, using their own interpretation of events to suggest that the phone calls themselves are a huge scandal.

They, of course, have no interest in assailing those that instigated the leaks, as they did with the DNC and Clinton campaign hacking. They have no interest in challenging the fact that the gathering of this information may have been illegal NSA or FBI monitoring. They have no interest that Government employees broke the law by leaking classified information to the press. They have no interest in the motivation or anything else to do with the government employees involved either in the monitoring or the leaking.
_______

So what we can be sure of:
  • When we have third Party hackers exposing embarrassing information from private non-government emails: the hackers are the culprits, and the exposed private Party are the victims.
  • When we have government employees with access to classified materials... leaking information that was possibly illegally gathered by intelligence sources: the employees and the intelligence gatherers are the good guys, and the exposed party in this case is the culprit.
Go figure...

At the Trump White House, hostility toward the media IS the agenda. Trump and many of his top officials believe reporters are so deaf to reality and so unfair to them that the only appropriate response is open warfare. "The opposition party is completely focused on trying to destroy Trump and his administration," Bannon told me. "It's not going to happen."

When asked if he had any interest in repairing the relationship, Bannon replied: "I could care less."

Since the foreign operatives were Russian Intelligence agents, they were no doubt gathering intelligence and looking for ways to manipulate the future former head of NSA.

We know that the future of US sanctions against Russia was discussed, and it has been abundantly clear that Russian Intelligence was thrilled about their prospects with a Trump Administration. It is therefore almost certain that some horse-trading was going on, and exactly "what" was traded is the burning question.

I have a lot of sympathy with the concern over the leaks of this intelligence, and the idea of American spies recording American conversations. It doesn't completely sit right, does it? But our intelligence agencies can and do surveille phone conversations with foreign nationals. Legally, and by the book. And this isn's some businessman talking to a foreign client - he was going to be the head of all our security, and of course these agencies can and should take extraordinary measures.

All of this is supposed to reach the President's desk before he picks his staff though, not leaked to the media. All Presidents vet their staff through these agencies, anything they find through any sources. My big question is, how did Trump not know about this problem? Did Trump bypass this vetting, believing that his own judgment is superior? Did he ignore it, or know of the problems and ignore them? Or did Trump think it was all inconsequential because he himself was directly involved, and perhaps directing it in the first place? And if so, why?

There is a reason for Flynn's abrupt and unceremonious withdrawal, and it isn't because he fibbed to the Vice President. There are too many questions for this to just settle out just from Flynn leaving, and it has real potential to blow up. All it needs is to turn over another rock and find more nasties, and with Intelligence services looking that isn't such a long shot.

Hey rat....who is zooming you. other than trump????? ........LOL From today's NYT's fake news......LOL

We know that Mr. Flynn has had some troubles with the truth before. He became infamous while running the Defense Intelligence Agency from 2012 to 2014 for what his subordinates called “Flynn facts” — statements with a shaky basis in reality. He has lied to superiors, including Vice President Pence, more than once, in particular about his talks with Moscow’s man in Washington.

And we now know that F.B.I. agents interviewed Mr. Flynn about those same talks shortly after Inauguration Day. Lying to the F.B.I. is punishable by five years in prison. Mr. Flynn may be guilty of no crime beyond bad judgment. But this case is no longer about him and his relationship with the truth. The bureau wants to know whether members of the Trump campaign were in cahoots with the Kremlin in a covert crusade on behalf of their candidate, and so does Senator McCain.

That's why this scandal has legs Opie. Personally I doubt that Trump colluded with the Russians relative to anything having to do with the election. Seriously, the Russians would have to be just about the last people you'd turn to, to influence an American election. It makes no sense.

Even so, Trump is hanging on by the benefit of the doubt. Should there turn up anything at all that looks like a quid pro quo regarding future policy and Russian pro-Trump propaganda, it would play right into that scenario and Trump's presumptive innocence in whatever Russia did will evaporate instantly.

C.H. Truth said...

WP - this is more likely the case:

http://freebeacon.com/national-security/former-obama-officials-loyalists-waged-campaign-oust-flynn/

I would expect that the "real" scandal here is that there are still Obama loyalist within the intelligence community more than willing to break laws to take down politicians they disagree with. (although one might expect that some heads might roll here).

Not that I believe that anyone left of FOX News will cover that angle. But in 2017, everything is a scandal to 33% of the country, nothing is ever a scandal to 33% of the country... the other 33% are so tired of the b.s. that they don't give a rip anymore.

Doesn't matter if it's Trump, Obama, or Clinton... the same percentages hold pretty much true.

wphamilton said...

That must be a convenient perspective, discounting any possible misdeeds because 1/3 of the people think everything is a scandal and two thirds don't care or don't believe anything. But you're wrong. Enough people do still care about our government and our leaders that we're still a political force, and we will still hold those leaders accountable.

Tired of scandals? How about having honest leaders whose primary concern is for the people of America? That would pretty much eliminate this constant cycle of scandal. What are the odds that Trump is smart enough to figure that out at this late stage?

I think you and I agreed that Clinton's email scandal was real. But approximately a third of the Country was convinced it was part of the vast right wing conspiracy and she was the victim of an unfair attacks, and I would offer that another third didn't really care one way or the other.

Considering (prior to becoming President) Barack Obama contacted the Mullahs of Iran and told them he would be a better option for them to negotiate with than Bush... I don't see how Flynn having contact with the Russians is anything different. Perhaps they are both scandals, or perhaps both examples are simply business as usual.

Obviously the Wall Street Journal is being manipulated per CHT
https://www.wsj.com/articles/spies-keep-intelligence-from-donald-trump-1487209351
U.S. intelligence officials have withheld sensitive intelligence from President Donald Trump because they are concerned it could be leaked or compromised, according to current and former officials familiar with the matter.

The officials’ decision to keep information from Mr. Trump underscores the deep mistrust that has developed between the intelligence community and the president over his team’s contacts with the Russian government, as well as the enmity he has shown toward U.S. spy agencies. On Wednesday, Mr. Trump accused the agencies of leaking information to undermine him.

You are so out of touch with reality, you should seek help. Seriously.

In some of these cases of withheld information, officials have decided not to show Mr. Trump the sources and methods that the intelligence agencies use to collect information, the current and former officials said. Those sources and methods could include, for instance, the means that an agency uses to spy on a foreign government.

A White House official said: “There is nothing that leads us to believe that this is an accurate account of what is actually happening.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

When we have third Party hackers exposing embarrassing information from private non-government emails: the hackers are the culprits, and the exposed private Party are the victims. The investigations that you oppose, could very well expose the Trump campaign, with the full knowledge of the candidate to leak this data at the right time to help the Trump campaign. You will say this is pure speculation, but yours is even worse, it's not logical or rational.

When we have government employees with access to classified materials... leaking information that was possibly illegally gathered by intelligence sources: the employees and the intelligence gatherers are the good guys, and the exposed party in this case is the culprit. If you read the National Inquirer, aka the Wall Street Journal that is owned by NewsCorp, the company that runs Fox News. You don't believe in a free press, if it releases information that is the truth, but damages the candidate you support.

The Times has run at least three stories since late October on the FBI investigation into contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russian agents and each one has come to the same conclusion — no evidence of cooperation so far. Even the now famous phone call between Flynn and the Russian ambassador in December has failed to produce clear evidence of wrongdoing. It was the ambassador, not Flynn, who allegedly made the call, and it was the ambassador, not Flynn, who allegedly raised the topic of sanctions. Flynn’s response to the ambassador was reportedly noncommittal, and among the many, many leaks about the call over the past week, none has provided evidence of exactly what Flynn said — a curious omission.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senior Republicans issued their boldest challenge yet to U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, promising to get to the bottom of the relationship between his aides and Russia, and calling for ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn to testify before Congress.

Trump, facing a deepening crisis less than a month into his presidency, sought to focus the attention on what he called criminal intelligence leaks, calling Flynn a "wonderful man" who had been unfairly treated by the media.

Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and other senators in Trump's party pushed for more information as the White House becomes engulfed by questions about contacts between Trump's team and Russia.

The things that needed to be fixed to make the law work were unpopular moves like a higher penalty for failing to comply with the individual mandate -- moves for which Republicans would have paid a price at the ballot box. It takes some pretty brazen chutzpah to say that because Democrats passed an unworkable law to set up what Republicans think is a bad system, Republicans now have a moral obligation to get themselves unelected saving that system, while Democrats take credit for the parts people like.

Regardless of the morality of it, expecting people to actually behave this way is daft. Republicans predictably didn’t lean into the strike zone and help Democrats save the exchanges. If the exchanges are indeed collapsing, Republicans will be striving even harder to avoid being tarred with their failure. As will the Democrats who once hoped they would be running on Obamacare’s triumphs for years to come.

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-02-15/a-rough-24-hours-for-obamacare

so 0linsky-care is collapsing under the weight of its namesakes own hubris.

perhaps this is another reason why his intel holdovers are desperate to take out trump.
