Is there lower rates of crime among immigrants?

There are actually two different answers to this question:
  • Legal immigrants? Yes
  • Illegal immigrants? No

Your liberal talking points memo will once again toss around a completely dishonest argument as a means to fool their rank and file, who largely (it appears) cannot think for themselves. While it is absolutely true that people who immigrate here by legal means actually commit less crime than those born here... the reality is that this point is completely moot. It doesn't matter. Because nobody is talking about ending legal immigration to this country.

So does that mean by some association of being born in a different country, that those who illegally come here are also prone to be honest, law abiding citizens? Hardly. Some stats:
The overall perspective of the criminal behavior of illegal aliens is grim. In a 2007 Government Accountability Office study of 55,322 illegal aliens, analysts discovered that they were arrested at least a total of 459,614 times, averaging about eight arrests per illegal alien: 70 percent had between two and 10 arrests, and 26 percent (about 15,000) had 11 or more arrests. Drug or immigration offenses accounted for 45 percent of all offenses, and approximately 12 percent (over 6,600 illegal aliens) were arrested for violent offenses such as murder, robbery, assault, and sex-related crimes.[14] link
An FBI crime study also shows heavy illegal alien involvement in criminal activity revealed these statistics
  • 75 percent of those on the most wanted criminals list in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Albuquerque are illegal aliens.
  • One quarter of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals, as are more than 40 percent of all inmates in Arizona and 48 percent in New Mexico jails.
  • Over 53 percent of all investigated burglaries reported in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas are perpetrated by illegal aliens.
  • 63 percent of cited drivers in Arizona have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that number, 97 percent are illegal aliens. 66 percent of cited drivers in New Mexico have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 66 percent, 98 percent are illegal aliens.[15]
Similar statistics add up with Federal charges and Federal prisoners. Estimates bring that number to around 20-25 percent of all Federal prisoners are illegal aliens.

So to summarize:
Legal immigrants - Good
Illegal immigrants - Very Bad

Odd are ten to one that at least one person will post statistics about "legal immigrants" in the comments, almost as if they didn't even read the post.

You are correct. not going to read your screed when all it will do is confirm your bias. i guess I'm just lazy and think all illegals should be deported anyway, since they are breaking our law...Unintended consequences will result and everyone will be affected.. GOOD>

I don't think of illegal immigrants as all that different from citizens. They shouldn't vote, we shouldn't subsidize their lifestyle whatever it is, and we need zero tolerance for crimes including that driving with no license and insurance. But beyond that, the vast majority of them are just like anyone else, just trying to get by like the rest of us. And we should leave them alone.

Bur surely any illegal who commits a crime beyond some petty misdemeanor has disqualified himself from the protections and benefits of our laws and society, and does not deserve the compassionate benefit of the doubt. I don't see anything wrong with a stricter policy regarding deporting those who choose theft, fraud, violence, or criminal enterprise over becoming contributing members of society. One strike and out, seriously why not?

What's interesting is that there is no sanctuary for American citizens. There is no city you can go to that will shield you from Federal warrants. If you get arrested (as an American citizen) in any locality and they see that you have a federal warrant... what do you suppose happens?

But if you happen to come to this country illegally, then you actually can commit federal crimes, go to particular cities and have some shielded protection from the Feds. Not sure exactly why "anyone" thinks this is a good idea?

The ONE Strike is coming into the USA Illegally.

Why is this so impossible for you to get?

OT but relevant.

"What did the President know, and when did he know it".
Howard Baker Jr. was the Republican Senator for Tennessee from 1967 to 1985. He made the comment that will live forever he made during the Watergate hearings investigating the burglary of the Democratic National Committee. He had a long and distinguished career, as a Senator as noted, and as the White House Chief of Staff for Ronald Reagan, and the ambassador to Japan.

Given all the statements that the Donald Trump campaign committee did not speak with officials of the Russian Government prior to November 8 2016, that famous question should be asked of President Trump. We have the right to know if the Russian government worked with the Trump campaign and perhaps assist the Trump campaign. . Donald Trump says he was involved in every aspect of his election campaign, both in the primaries and the general election. Was Putin’s government was illegally intervening in the American election, in the hopes of putting Trump in the White House? We have the right to know, yes or no.

The Senate committee that is going to investigate this matter, told the White House staff to keep all relevant communications with the Russian government. The FBI is also conducting an investigation into the the campaign communications with the Russian government.

That brings us to this valid point. We deserve to know the answers to that question.

Coming into the USA illegally is not theft, fraud, violence nor criminal enterprise.

Some people have a much higher regard for arbitrary rules than I do. I would call it an irrational fixation. It's more important to know, what is the harm and what is the benefit. If you truly mess up, you get kicked out. Why is that idea so offensive to you KD?

Our treatment of them differs from citizens, certainly. But as people or human beings, the vast majority are no different than the rest of us.

Right W.P.

But in this case, we provide a "right" or a "privilege" to illegal aliens that is not provided to American citizens. Seems sort of backwards.

Roger -

You do realize that speaking with people from Russia either before or after the election is not actually illegal in and of itself. It would only become illegal if it could be shown that there was some collusion to help the Russians break the law.

At this point, there is no evidence supplied by anyone that such collusion exists. Those who monitored the telephone communications between Flynn and Russian diplomats have actually stated for the record that there is no such evidence of collusion.

Quite frankly there has been no tangible evidence provided to the public that the Russians were actually responsible for any of the hacking. Just a good old fashioned "take our word for it".

So with all due respect, you and your ilk are barking at the moon here. As the Clintons used to say... there is no "there there". Only conspiracy theories and people who desperately want someone in the Trump administration apparently to simply "admit to damning evidence of wrong doing" even as the intelligence communities have not been able to come up with any such evidence themselves.

Wild conspiracy theories do not warrant anymore time or effort from our intelligence communities. We have real problems with real threats for our intelligence communities to be focused on.

Ruben G. Rumbaut, PhD, Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine, and Walter A. Ewing, PhD, Research Associate at the Immigration Policy Center of the American Immigration Law Foundation (AILF), in a Spring 2007 Immigration Policy Center report entitled "The Myth of Immigrant Criminality and the Paradox of Assimilation: Incarceration Rates among Native and Foreign-Born Men," concluded that:

"Because many immigrants to the United States, especially Mexicans and Central Americans, are young men who arrive with very low levels of formal education, popular stereotypes tend to associate them with higher rates of crime and incarceration. The fact that many of these immigrants enter the country through unauthorized channels or overstay their visas often is framed as an assault against the 'rule of law,' thereby reinforcing the impression that immigration and criminality are linked. This association has flourished in a post-9/11 climate of fear and ignorance where terrorism and undocumented immigration often are mentioned in the same breath.

However, data from the census and other sources show that for every ethnic group without exception, incarceration rates among young men are lowest for immigrants, even those who are the least educated. This holds true especially for the Mexicans, Salvadorans, and Guatemalans who make up the bulk of the undocumented population. The problem of crime in the United States is not 'caused' or even aggravated by immigrants, regardless of their legal status. But the misperception that the opposite is true persists among policymakers, the media, and the general public, thereby undermining the development of reasoned public responses to both crime and immigration."

John Hagan, PhD, Professor of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University, and Alberto Palloni, PhD, Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, in a Nov. 1999 Social Problems essay entitled "Sociological Criminology and the Mythology of Hispanic Immigration and Crime," concluded that:

"Our sociological knowledge of crime is fragmented and ineffective in challenging and correcting mistaken public perceptions, for example, linking immigration and crime. These misperceptions are perpetuated by government reports of growing numbers of Hispanic immigrants in U.S. prisons...

[I]t is estimated that the involvement of Hispanic immigrants in crime is less than that of citizens. These results cast doubt on the hypothesis that immigration causes crime and make more transparent the immigration and criminal justice policies that inflate the rate of Hispanic incarceration."

It appears that there is a bit of cherry picking, we are accustomed to that.

Reply on the source and we can talk about it.

I have said we don't have all the data yet but we do have the answer to

What did the President know and if so when did he get it.

Sorry Roger -

The first person lays out a claim that is based on "immigrant incarceration rates" as a whole... and fails to separate between those who are legal immigrants and those who are illegal.

True to form, you did exactly what I stated you would on the post (which is post a comment that includes statistics on legal immigrants).
_______

Meanwhile the second person does something similar (not separating legal vs illegal) and then seems to be arguing that the only reason illegal immigrants are arrested multiple times (on average) and make up much larger than proportionate numbers of prisoners in Border State prisons and Federal prisons... is because criminal justice "policies" inflate the rate of incarceration with Hispanics.

Again... the facts are the facts. There is no way that illegal immigrants make up 25% of the California citizenship, yet 25% of those in Prison are "Pisces" or Mexican born Hispanics.
