A new strategy?

ARE THERE STILL TRUMP CARDS TO PLAY?
Then, too, I can recall in detail the story arc of Reagan’s first year in office, which is regarded nowadays as a triumph of presidential leadership and legislative accomplishment, but in fact was a much closer run thing that people recall. By the last week of March in 1981, Reagan’s tax cut and budget proposals were in deep trouble on Capitol Hill. Like the House last week, the Senate finance committee had voted it down, prompting a famous Wall Street Journal editorial attacking the Republican committee chair Sen. Pete Domenici as “John Maynard Domenici.” Democrats and the media were getting ready at the end of March to declare that Reagan’s “honeymoon” was over, and that his tax and budget-cutting agenda was dead.

Then Reagan got shot, which reset Reagan’s honeymoon and allowed his team to regroup on Capitol Hill, ultimately yielding congressional victories in June and August (also, incidentally, using the budget reconciliation process for the first time to achieve their broad policy goals). Even with Reagan’s high popularity after his shooting, it was still a hard-fought battle on Capitol Hill. Whoever thought a health care bill could get through the House in two weeks was not thinking very clearly.

Not sure what to make of this, other than to question whether this suggests that without getting shot, that Reagan would not have passed his tax agenda, or that in order to regain momentum, Donald Trump should take a bullet and spend some times in the Hospital.

I think the larger point is that sometimes we forget that we are still only sixty six days into the new Trump Presidency. Considering the President's complete lack of any prior political governing experience, one might think that two months and a week, might be a little too quick of a learning curve for pretty much anyone.

Personally I feel the real moral of the story here is that Trump should follow Reagan's foot steps and move forward with new tax cuts, and put the health care issue on the back burner. If all of the various factions of the GOP House and Senate cannot agree on the need for tax changes, then Trump (and the GOP) has bigger problems than Obamacare.

Obamacare will continue to crumble, and eventually the demand to do something will be too big to ignore, even for the Freedom Caucus. Maybe even for the Democrats. When that time comes, Trump and the GOP can revisit the American Health Care Act, or whatever they are wanting to call it. But as Tom Cotton implied recently, to write something this big, this serious, and this important, and in secret; then expect it to pass in eighteen days, is a little high in the expectations department. It's going to take a lot more work, and not such a reliance on deal making and politicking.

Trump as a Business man knows how to move on, this is a "so what", so what this deal did not got thru, already working on the next 3 deals.

This is my Winning list.

1, Beat Hillary, check
2, Nominate a true US Constitution Judge to the USSC, check
3, Cut taxes and Regulation ,,,,,, It has not been done since Reagan did it, Ronald did a lot of the heavy lifting in his two terms, President Trump will do the same.

Reduce the Taxes on Business, Individuals in the middle and lower income earners and lower the Tax rate to 15 % for money earned abroad by US Companies so they can move that money to the USA, more in the bank more money to lend.

US Home Builder are back in business build single family homes , that is a great shift away from the "

President Donald Trump has been unpopular his entire tenure and it doesn't look like that's changing any time soon.

The most recent polls published late last week showed Trump's approval rating is hovering around 40 percent and remains safely underwater.

The latest Gallup tracking poll pegged the president's support at 40 percent on the dot Saturday. Fifty-four percent of Americans, meanwhile, disapproved of the job Trump was doing. The Gallup survey takes a three-day rolling average of daily figures interviewing some 1,500 adults. The margin of errors is plus or minus three percentage points.

I knew, beyond a doubt, that you would find a way to avoid the truth. Ronald Reagan, had been in politics for many years, before he was elected President. He surprised a lot of his political opponents, because he would work with the Democrats. Take the time to read the book by Chris Matthews. He was a member of the Tip O'Neill staff. Reagan met with Tip and the other Democratic leaders. Trump is never, NEVER, work with the Democrats or anyone else who isn't on his side. That 70 year old man is not going to change his methodology. His ego is so apparent, that he's not capable of doing the things that you believe is going to happen.

You claim to be analytical and dispassionate in your political comments. But you seem to have lost that, or perhaps, never did.

He was a terrible choice, and worse, he is a grave danger to our democratic republic. He is instinctively authoritarian. It is apparent in every single thing he says or does. He is a polar opposite to Reagan.

Take the time to read the book by Chris Matthews. He was a member of the Tip O'Neill staff. Reagan met with Tip and the other Democratic leaders.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Today's "Playbook" e-mail from Politico starts with an excerpt from Chris Matthews's new book, "Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked," about the relationship between Matthews's former boss, House Speaker Tip O'Neill (D-Mass.), and President Ronald Reagan.

Matthews argues that O'Neill and Reagan's relationship represented a now-gone era of bipartisan cooperation, where things got done. "During this period, government met its deadlines," Matthews writes. "Members of Congress listened and acted. Debates led to solutions. Shutdowns were averted."

The government shut down seven times when O'Neill was speaker and Reagan was president. And they were real shutdowns, too, given that they occurred after Jimmy Carter's attorney general, Benjamin Civiletti, issued opinions in 1980 and 1981 saying that funding gaps had to lead to at least partial shutdowns of government functions. Five quasi-shutdowns happened before those opinions under O'Neill's watch, with Carter as president. And one more shutdown happened under Reagan and O'Neill's successor as speaker, Jim Wright.

If your metric for quality governance is "ability to avoid shutdowns," then Reagan is absolutely the worst president of the modern era. The government shut down eight times under his watch, more than any other president, representing nearly half of all shutdowns that have occurred under the modern budget process. And O'Neill is an even worse speaker, if that's our criterion. He presided over 12 funding gaps or shutdowns, or almost 71 percent of all shutdowns to date.

Obviously, there are better governance metrics than that. But if Matthews wants to make the case that the Reagan/O'Neill era was some golden age of quality government, he really shouldn't bring up government shutdowns.

As for the supposed sweetness and light between Reagan and Tip O’Neill, it was mostly blarney. The two had numerous tense phone calls and meetings. In private they called each other’s views “crap” on more than one occasion; as the budget talks in 1982 headed to a climax, Reagan told O’Neill, “you can get me to crap a pineapple, but you can’t get me to crap a cactus.” O’Neill publicly called Reagan “callous . . . a real Ebenezer Scrooge,” whose program was “for the selfish, the greedy, and the affluent.” In his diary, Reagan wrote: “Tip O’Neil [sic] is getting rough; saw him on TV telling the United Steelworkers U. that I am going to destroy the nation.” He also told his diary that “Tip is a true pol. He can really like you personally & be a friend while politically trying to beat your head in.” That was Reagan at his most charitable. He noted once that in a White House meeting where O’Neill “sounded off in a very partisan manner,” “I almost let go the controls but I didn’t,” and on another occasion he described one of O’Neill’s public claims as “the most vicious pack of lies I’ve ever seen.”

Reagan had in mind such O’Neill gems as his remarks in 1981 on ABC that Reagan “has no concern, no regard, no care for the little man in America. And I understand that. Because of his lifestyle, he never meets those people.” This was a mere warm-up for O’Neill’s blast at Reagan during the 1984 campaign:

"The evil is in the White House at the present time. And that evil is a man who has no care and no concern for the working class of America and the future generations of America, and who likes to ride a horse. He’s cold. He’s mean. He’s got ice water for blood."

We'll see if anything gets done before August. Because that's the bar if you are comparing to Reagan.

There were fewer Republicans in the House in 1981 than there are Democrats in the House today. It took a lot of hard work with Congress for Reagan to get his agenda passed. And it was Reagan's agenda, not Howard Baker's agenda, or Bob Michel's agenda, or Tip O'Neill's agenda.

So what, pray tell, is Trump's legislative agenda? Other than being able to take credit for whatever's passed by the Republican Congress?

...Yet the blame game is taking a toll on an exhausted White House. At the highest levels of the West Wing, the mood has grown so tense that staffers have begun calling up reporters inquiring whether other senior aides are leaking damaging information about them.
"The various warring fiefdoms and camps within the White House are constantly changing and are so vast and complicated in their nature,” said one former Trump campaign aide, “that there is no amount of reporting that could accurately describe the subterfuge, animosity and finger-pointing that is currently happening within the ranks of the senior staff."

PNC said...

To those who are still capable of thinking clearly, it's clear that Trump never did want to "repeal and replace" Obamacare. That's just a lie he told the Gullible Old Party to win their votes.

Trump is a lifelong Democrat who ran as a Republican.

Trump wants to keep Obamacare. That's why his idea of a "replacement" proposal was a bill with no chance of passing.

Even more, let's not forget that Trump spoke highly of single-payer systems during the primaries. That is STILL what he would prefer.

Obamacare Lite was never intended to pass. Trump's real goal is Obamacare on steroids.

PNC said...

And with the understanding that "repeal and replace" was merely a campaign promise Trump had no intention of actually keeping, it's worth considering what OTHER campaign promises Trump may be breaking under cover of misdirection and planned defeat...

Such as his promise to nominate a Constitutionalist to the Supreme Court.

Real conservatives must say NO to the Trojan Gorsuch.

Trump Russian story is a hoax. #MAGA!

There are many demands for Nunes to recuse himself because he checked with the White House. He took two cars so his staff could not follow him. He acted as an agent for the President.

Blumberg Interview with Nunes
According to a Daily Beast report later over the weekend, Nunes went off the grid that night to meet a source and view dozens of intelligence reports, including accounts of meetings involving President Donald Trump's advisers.

Then it gets weirder. CNN is now reporting that Nunes had in fact slipped off to the White House grounds last Tuesday to view the documents. And then on Wednesday, after briefing reporters on what he had found in those intelligence reports, he went back to the White House to inform the president.

On the surface, none of this looks good for Nunes, who is in charge of his committee's bipartisan investigation into all things Trump and Russia. Why would Nunes need to brief the president on documents he viewed at a facility on White House grounds?

In an interview Monday, Nunes told me that he ended up meeting his source on the White House grounds because it was the most convenient secure location with a computer connected to the system that included the reports, which are only distributed within the executive branch. "We don't have networked access to these kinds of reports in Congress," Nunes said. He added that his source was not a White House staffer and was an intelligence official.

Nunes, it should be said, has a history of cultivating independent sources inside the intelligence community. He made contact, for example, with the U.S. intelligence contractors who ended up saving most of the Americans stuck in the Benghazi outpost when it was attacked on Sept. 11, 2012.

Then just now, the President tweeted: The Republican House Freedom Caucus was able to snatch defeat from he jaws of victory. After so many bad years they were ready to win!
Last Friday blamed the Democrats. Today he's been attacking members of his own party. He's confused and angry. He also blamed them for saving Planned Parenthood.

Over the weekend and repeated it again, that he would work with the Democrats to fix Obamacare, although he didn't use the same words, but the implication was obvious. The problem is, that in the house Democrats he would have to get 25 to 30 Democrats to work with him is impossible.

Here we are folks, as predicted by yours truly, George Will and quite a few other pundits said that Donald Trump is not going to success as the President of the United States.
The Republican party is not going to work with the President even on the tax bill they are proposing.

The terrorists around he world are looking at this disaster with glee.
Our long time allies, in NATO don't trust him because they know he's lying and many of them think he's not mentally schedule
He has brought the congress back into their role as an equal power with the President. His defeat on his most important campaign issue.
His nepotism is getting more power. President Donald Trump will name his son-in-law, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, to lead a new office responsible for streamlining and overhauling the federal government on Monday, the White House told NBC News on Sunday night. He has no experience on this.
Although this is only two months and six days into his term, it is clear that he will not be able to get his own agenda passed, and will not be able to conduct effective foreign affairs.
The President is trying to distract attention of the Russian government prior to the election.
He has not mentioned his polling numbers, there is a good reason, the Gallup daily poll shows his approval of 36%

I didn't want to be right about this. But just under three million voters that voted for Hillary Clinton, the electoral college put this man into the White House. Our country will survive this disaster. But I have to worry about a man this impulsive and narcissistic as the Commander in Chief of he greatest military on the planet.

Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's 36-year-old son-in-law, is now serving as a senior adviser in the Trump administration.
He has no prior experience in government or politics.
Apart from a semester as a member of the Institute of Politics during his freshman year at Harvard, Jared has not been engaged politically. While visiting the White House after the election, Jared reportedly asked, "How many of these people stay?" (Answer: Pretty much none.) Though comparatively inexperienced in politics, Jared has proved to be a quick study. "Honestly, Jared is a very successful real estate person, but I actually think he likes politics more than he likes real estate," Donald Trump said at a rally. "But he's very good at politics."

So there you go again. Loyalty over experience.

Trumps gallup approval 36% down from 39% earlier in the week....How low can he go!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — While pundits breathlessly reported this week that President Trump’s Gallup approval rating has plummeted to a historic low (dipping to 37 points), not all approval ratings are created equal.

Because in American politics, geography is everything.

Live in an urban, minority or college setting, and Donald J. Trump is underwater in the polls in a big way; he gets a frosty 29 percent approval rating in the cities, 35 percent approval in the urban suburbs, in the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal survey.

But, live in the second ring of suburbs outside the cities, or the exurbs or the third and fourth rings that comprise rural America, and the president gets a 53 percent to 59 percent job approval rating in the same poll.

For the most part, the people who live in those regions are pretty much happy with him.

That’s a puzzling notion that has befuddled many journalists, members of the permanent establishment and pundits on both sides of the aisle since the day Trump was inaugurated.

And, in all likelihood, that effervescent support will continue for a very long time. Why? Because the people who live in those outer rings of cities aren’t just separated by geography; they’re separated by culture, traditions and aspirations that differ from those of their city cousins.

They also are so tired of being ridiculed by the political class over the notion they’re digging in for Trump, more so than they normally would. Especially when they read (yes, they do read) columns in New York Magazine by former theater critic Frank Rich who takes a deep swipe at Trump’s base, writing: “While you can’t blame our new president for loving ‘the poorly educated’ who gave him that blank check, the rest of us are entitled to abstain. If we are free to loathe Trump, we are free to loathe his most loyal voters, who have put the rest of us at risk.”
