Democrats look to cut a deal with no leverage to do so...

The Buzz is that the Democrats are looking to cut a deal which would allow an up or down vote on Justice Gorsuch in exchange for a Republican promise "not" to eliminate the filibuster on any subsequent nominations to the Supreme Court.

Any Republicans crazy enough to agree?
This would be akin to me promising that I will give you what you already have in exchange for you giving me what I desire. Republicans would be crazy to agree to such a deal, knowing full well that Democrats are not "really" in any position to filibuster Gorsuch.

In many ways, this is a bizarro-world move that sort of runs completely the opposite of the implied and very tangible threat that the Republicans have in their back pocket. The last thing the Democrats want right now is to see McConnell and the GOP vote to dismantle the filibuster for USSC nominees. But if the Democrats decide to filibuster a very well qualified nominee (who's stock has gone up since his confirmation hearing) and who would be replacing a like minded conservative who passed... it would provide major political cover for the GOP to make the move to eliminate the filibuster. Thus, it would give Trump carte blanche to choose the next USSC nominee (assuming there is one). Politically the Democrats would be much better off fighting that fight if Trump was nominating someone to replace Justices Kennedy, Ginsburg, or Breyer.

So it really begs the question. Why would the Republicans agree to any deal at this point that cuts off their future options, in exchange for helping the Democrats save face over their opposition to a well qualified nominee?

The answer is that they shouldn't. Not unless they are strategically challenged.

I watched about half of the first day interview. Gorsuch doesn't cause me much concern. The fact that he made two comments that ripped the skin off Mr Trump exhibited a strength of character. He's not a Scalia clone, at all. I suspect that he, like Chief Justice Roberts, will be far less ideological than the alt-right than they want.

Meaning if the Democrats filibuster, McConnell will go nuclear and then it will be weekend at Bernie time with Ginsburgh and Breyer.

Roger - So another story from another reporter who simply takes Trump literally but not seriously?

In other words, another reporter chasing the "red herring" of semantics.

The "serious" nature of Trump's claims was that communications of him and his associates were being monitored during the election (under the overall supervision of DOJ and ultimately the President).

It looks more and more (one way or the other) that this is true. That whether it be by "accident" or "accidentally on purpose" or literally "on purpose" communications of Trump associates were being monitored, unclassified, and ultimately leaked.

President Obama used executive action to declassify (or distribute) this information only three days prior to Trump being inaugurated. The only explanation for this action provided at this time, was to allow for more people to have the information, which would allow for more possibility of leaks, and less of a likelihood that the leakers could be identified. Why otherwise would a President essentially "declassify" potentially damaging political information about the man taking over the wheel - only days before his tenure was done?

For that action alone, Obama solidified his place in my mind as easily the most blatantly partisan President in our lifetime. A man who almost childishly clings to his liberal dogma and Party-first/Country-second actions.

The claim that Muslims celebrated on 9-11 in New Jersey…
Well if you look at the reporter, he wrote the story in the Washington Post.
But my idea is that whatever the reality of what you are describing, the fact that they are disputed makes them a more effective message, that you are able to spread the message further, that more people get excited about it, that it gets on TV.
Well now if you take a look at the votes, when I say that, I mean mostly they register wrong, in other words, for the votes, they register incorrectly, and/or illegally. And they then vote. You have tremendous numbers of people. In fact I’m forming a committee on it.
But there’s no evidence that 3 million people voted with…
We’ll see after the committee. I have people say it was more than that. We will see after we have. But there will be, we are forming a committee. And we are going to do a study on it, a very serious problem.
Is there anything different about making these kinds of predictions without having the factual evidence as President?
I’m a very instinctual person, but my instinct turns out to be right. When everyone said I wasn’t going to win the election, I said well I think I would. You know it is interesting, somebody came up to me and said the other day, gee whiz, the New York Times and other people, you know other groups, had you down at one percent, well, I said no I think I am going to win, and people smiled, George Stephanopoulos laughed, you remember. He thought it was very cute, and very funny. Other people smiled. And some people, the smart people or the people that know me didn’t laugh at all. There are people that know me, like Carl Icahn and many others, that didn’t laugh at all, they thought I was going to win, because they understand how I, they understand me. They get it. But you take a look and guess what, I won, and I won easily. I predicted Brexit. Remember they said there was no way to get to 270? Well I ended up at 306. I had election night, 306. But there was no way to get to, in fact I went to Maine four times, four times I went to Maine, because I had to get one vote, because there was no way to get to 270, but I ended up getting to 306. Brexit, I predicted Brexit, you remember that, the day before the event. I said, no, Brexit is going to happen, and everybody laughed, and Brexit happened. Many many things. They turn out to be right. And now today, Devin Nunes, just had a news conference.

That being said... the repeal bill being pushed in the House is unlikely to clear the Senate, even through reconciliation. This is not going to happen overnight, and I would think that "rushing" is not exactly the best strategy here.

But that's not true. The mayor didn't say that. And he definitely didn't say that right after his city was attacked.
To be fair, the article Trump Jr. linked is misleading. It's titled, "Sadiq Khan: London mayor says terror attacks 'part and parcel' of living in a major city." Khan actually said the threat is "part and parcel" — not the attacks themselves.

Oh Oh folks. Seriously.. Reuters has a BOMB

Russia says it was in touch with Trump's campaign during election

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-russia-trump-idUSKBN1351RJ

By Andrew Osborn | MOSCOW

The Russian government was in touch with members of President-elect Donald Trump's political team during the U.S. election campaign and knows most of his entourage, one of Russia's most senior diplomats told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.

Accused by defeated Democratic contender Hillary Clinton of being a puppet of President Vladimir Putin after praising the Russian leader, Trump has dismissed suggestions he had anything to do with the Russian government during the campaign.

But in comments that could prove politically awkward for the president-elect, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there had indeed been some communications.

"There were contacts," Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying. "We are doing this and have been doing this during the election campaign."

Such contacts would continue, he added, saying the Russian government knew and had been in touch with many of Trump's closest allies. He did not name names.

"Obviously, we know most of the people from his (Trump's)entourage. Those people have always been in the limelight in the United States and have occupied high-ranking positions," he said.

"I cannot say that all of them, but quite a few have been staying in touch with Russian representatives."

Moscow was just beginning to consider how to go about setting up more formal channels to communicate with the future Trump administration, said Ryabkov.

A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

FBI INQUIRY

The Federal Bureau of Investigation opened a preliminary inquiry in recent months into allegations that Trump or his associates might have had questionable dealings with Russian people or businesses, but found no evidence to warrant opening a full investigation, according to sources familiar with the matter. The agency has not publicly discussed the probe.

The U.S. government has blamed Russia for cyber attacks on Democratic Party organizations.

Trump, who has spoken of his desire to improve tattered U.S.-Russia ties, has said he might meet Putin before his inauguration, but Putin's spokesman has said there are currently no plans for such a meeting.

Interfax reported on Wednesday that Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, would be in New York this week for a chess tournament, a few blocks from Trump Tower, where the president-elect has his office.

This is a little more recent:

Potential 'smoking gun' showing Obama administration spied on Trump team, source says

Classified intelligence showing incidental collection of Trump team communications, purportedly seen by committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and described by him in vague terms at a bombshell Wednesday afternoon news conference, came from multiple sources, Capitol Hill sources told Fox News. The intelligence corroborated information about surveillance of the Trump team that was known to Nunes, sources said, even before President Trump accused his predecessor of having wiretapped him in a series of now-infamous tweets posted on March 4.

The intelligence is said to leave no doubt the Obama administration, in its closing days, was using the cover of legitimate surveillance on foreign targets to spy on President-elect Trump, according to sources.

The key to that conclusion is the unmasking of selected U.S. persons whose names appeared in the intelligence, the sources said, adding that the paper trail leaves no other plausible purpose for the unmasking other than to damage the incoming Trump administration.

If true, it should be a scandal of Watergate proportions.

It goes without saying that if Obama was a Republican, it would already had been one.

sounds about right...

"It’s now clear what happened. The Obama people started spying on Trump once he had the nomination or perhaps even earlier. They may have started earlier with an eye on helping the Republicans knock him off in the primary, but that’s not clear. They figured that Clinton was a lock so they were not careful about covering their tracks. The Clinton people are as dirty as it gets so they were not going to be ratting on anyone over it. If anything, they would expand on it.

This is where the Russian hacking story comes into the picture. Once disaster struck and Team Obama realized they had a problem, they needed cover, so they started with the Russian hacking nonsense. They would then claim that it was all an accident and they were just trying to prevent Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale from attacking our democracy! It’s also why Obama signed a retroactive Executive Order giving cover to the intel agencies for their domestic spying activities. They were creating a cover story.

The complication is that it appears that at least one person has perjured himself over this and that one person is FBI Director Comey. There’s no way to square his testimony with these new revelations. The best he can do is split hairs and claim he was not part of the spying effort. Of course, there’s no way to touch him as he runs the FBI. In fact, there’s no way to investigate any of the intelligence organizations. This is the point where many of the robot historians of the future will say the American political class murdered itself."

Go suck a goat......asswipe I guess delusion is all you have. Good for you.

KD, 457 B and 529 are sweet said...

Opie , I really hope your life is not a dark as you paint it to be here.

Is it because you thought the SS payments you depend upon where "yours" and I informed you that they are not?

Or is it because I will never, Thank God, have to depend on those working today to pay my way in life and your having a really hard time dealing?
