SO PROUD OF PINPRICK DONALD

Obama’s Syria Strike Plan Was Bigger Than Trump’s

Josh Rogin: “The Trump administration’s strike on one of Bashar al-Assad’s air bases was similar in style and objectives to the strike plan that President Barack Obama prepared in 2013 — except that Obama’s attacks were to be several times bigger than President Trump’s. At the time, leading Republicans mocked the Obama administration for what it called ‘pinprick’ strikes, calling them ineffective. Today they praise Trump’s smaller strikes as perfectly calculated.”

Trump’s Travel Costs as Much as Obama’s In Two Years

President Trump’s trips to his luxury Florida resort “have already cost the US taxpayer at least $24 million — roughly as much as Barack Obama spent on travel in the first two years of his presidency,” the Independent reports.
“In total, Mr Obama’s travel bill over the eight years of his presidency came to $97 million — an average of $12.1 million a year.

Russia Accused of Complicity in Syria War Crime

“Britain and America will this week directly accuse Russia of complicity in war crimes in Syria and demand that Vladimir Putin pull the rug from Bashar al-Assad’s blood-soaked regime,” the Times of London reports.
“Rex Tillerson — President Donald Trump’s secretary of state — will fly to Moscow to confront Russia with evidence that it had knowledge of, and sought to cover up, the regime’s deadly sarin strike last week that left 87 people dead.”

Bipartisan Deal on Tax Reform Unlikely

Wall Street Journal: “There is, at some level, rhetorical room for agreement. Mr. Trump says middle-class tax cuts are a top priority. House Speaker Paul Ryan
(R-WI) says he’s aiming for his plan to be revenue neutral—collecting as much money over the next decade as the current system does. Mix Mr. Trump’s class rhetoric, Mr. Ryan’s budgetary promise and the prospect of spending on infrastructure and there is a recipe for bipartisanship.”

“But so far, those priorities aren’t widely shared among Republicans and GOP plans haven’t matched them… House Republicans haven’t shown in detail how their plan adds up and don’t want to tie infrastructure and taxes together. Lower tax rates on businesses, investors and top earners are a unifying force in the GOP, and many lawmakers are reluctant to give that up to get a deal with Democrats.”

“Even if the White House and Democrats reach a conceptual agreement on taxes, any accord would drive many Republicans away and require the Trump administration and lawmakers to make decisions on hundreds of details.”

Trump Officials Don’t Agree on Syria Regime Change

“Regime change is something that we think is going to happen because all of the parties are going to see that Assad is not the leader that needs to be taking place for Syria… There’s not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime.”
— U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, in an interview on CNN.

“When you undertake a violent regime change in Libya, and the situation in Libya continues to be very chaotic and I would argue that the life of the Libyan people has — is not all that well off today, so I think we have to learn the lessons of the past and learn the lessons of what went wrong in Libya when you choose that pathway of regime change.”
— Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in an interview on ABC News.

I's starting to look like Trump is divorcing Putin.

Officials in the Trump administration on Sunday demanded that Russia stop supporting the Syrian government or face a further deterioration in its relations with the United States.

The Washington "Fake News" Post has the story.

Signaling the focus of talks that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set to have in Moscow this week, officials said that Russia, in propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, bears at least partial responsibility for Wednesday’s chemical attack on villagers in Idlib province.

“I hope Russia is thinking carefully about its continued alliance with Bashar al-Assad, because every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russia closer into some level of responsibility,” Tillerson said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Although officials acknowledged that they have seen no evidence directly linking Russia to the attacks, national security adviser H.R. McMaster said that Russia should be pressed to answer what it knew ahead of the chemical attack since it has positioned warplanes and air defense systems with associated troops in Syria since 2015.

“I think what we should do is ask Russia, how could it be, if you have advisers at that airfield, that you didn’t know that the Syrian air force was preparing and executing a mass murder attack with chemical weapons?” McMaster said on Fox News.

The timing of the comments, with Tillerson heading soon to Moscow, signaled the administration’s intent to pressure Russia to step away from Assad, who is supported by the Kremlin with military aid and diplomatic cover.

The fallout from the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons against civilians, plus the U.S. missile strike that came in retaliation for it, adds strain to a rocky relationship that is at its lowest point in decades. A host of issues are responsible, topped by Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election and Moscow’s support for separatists in Ukraine, and have prompted U.S. and European sanctions. These topics have now been overshadowed by last week’s missile strike.

He seems to be learning how difficult and tricky, it is to be a politician. Especially the President. He has to choose between Bannan, who has given him bad advice since day one. Trump isn't a nationalist at the same level as he racist, white supremacist Steve Bannon. The conflict between his son in law and Bannon. Only one of them can be fired.

He's still going to be unable to govern effectively, he's too compulsive and psychotic. He won't be able to pass anything he promised in the campaign, nor will he say he was wrong on the wire tapping bs, so that's still going to be in the way. And he's not capable of admitting mistakes. have you met USSC associate justice gorsuch? he begins his lifetime appointment today.

several bushels of exec orders from the previous administration have been nullified/overturned. and there are more to go.

a mountain of burdensome EPA regs have been scuttled.

and then there's this:

Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney is reportedly slated to send a letter to federal agencies later this week warning them to prep for substantial budget cuts.

The guidance letter falls in line with President Donald Trump’s March 13 executive order aimed at making the government leaner and more efficient, Axios first reported.

The order called on Mulvaney, a staunch fiscal conservative and former member of the House Freedom Caucus, to “propose a plan to reorganize governmental functions and eliminate unnecessary agencies (as defined in section 551(1) of title 5, United States Code), components of agencies, and agency programs.”

Trump’s budget called for historic cuts to a number of agencies — including a 31 percent cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, a 28 percent cut to the State Department and a 17.9 percent cut to the Department of Health and Human Services. While a number of the departments’ budgets would be slashed, the Department of Defense would see a 10 percent boost in spending.

ANOTHER EPIC FAIL COMING DOWN THE PIKE?

Trump Scraps Tax Reform Plan

President Trump “has scrapped the tax plan he campaigned on and is going back to the drawing board in a search for Republican consensus behind legislation to overhaul the U.S. tax system,” the AP reports.

“The administration’s first attempt to write legislation is in its early stages and the White House has kept much of it under wraps. But it has already sprouted the consideration of a series of unorthodox proposals including a drastic cut to the payroll tax, aimed at appealing to Democrats.

“Administration officials say it’s now unlikely that a tax overhaul will meet the August deadline set by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. But the ambitious pace to figure out a plan reflects Trump’s haste to move quickly past a bruising failure to broker a compromise within his own party on how to replace the health insurance law enacted under President Obama.”

The more I look at "why" President Trump launched 59 cruise missiles on an the air force base in Syria. Pulitzer prize winner Eugene Robinson has changed my mind on this attack. It was really nothing more than publicly.

"If the cruise missile attack was a one-and-done warning, it changes nothing. If it was an opening salvo of some kind, what follows? Either we’re on a slippery slope toward deeper military involvement, or we remain helpless witnesses to unspeakable carnage. Maybe Trump, having acted as commander in chief, feels good about those alternatives. I don’t see why anyone else should."

Nice to see liberals come out in the open, aligning themselves with China, Indonesia, Iran, Syria and Russia.

More like Pulitzer prize-winning nutjob.

He's gone around the Lawrence O'Donnell bend. So have you.

Totalitarian is who they are. Just look at any Ivy League college.

I had the same points, but went a little further than "If it was an opening salvo of some kind, what follows?" in that the logical scheme for a strategically pointless strike is a series of gradual escalations.

ANOTHER EPIC FAIL COMING DOWN THE PIKE?

Yes probably James. What are the chances of a Zero tax rate for the 1% tax bracket and the elimination of EIC and middle-class tax breaks? That would be about the same chance that the GOP fringe wing will allow anything that Trump comes up with.

wp, I have been thinking "what's next"

One surprise is that it's the end of the bff relationship between Putin and Mr Trump. It looks like the Steve Bannon era too. The President is unbelievably ignorant of foreign affairs. So he used to let Bannon write his comments.

The new bombshell is huge.

Roger they never had a friendly relationship in the first place - both Trump and Putin allowed the perception to persist while it was politically beneficial, for their respective reasons. For example, Putin didn't really call Trump "brilliant" intellectually - he was calling him a "colorful" politician. Trump never really expressed admiration for Putin, except to praise him for recognizing Trump's "brilliance". "Strong leader" was descriptive of Putin's foreign affairs, that he contrasted with Obama - not actually praise. But neither of them went to any lengths to dispel this misconstruing.

Unfortunately Steve Bannon is still around, and still influential in the White House. Sad as it may be to acknowledge, but the nepotism of bringing his son in law Kushner on board was probably Trump's best decision.
