It's quite a story. All my siblings are still with us. All of us are ok, except Deloris is in dementia. She is in a care home.
A few years ago I was looking at some old pictures that he had rescued that our mother was going to trash them. I remember my mother from the late 30's and on. I saw pictures of her I had never seen, when she was in her 20s. I was surprised, she was a really beautiful woman. I'm talking a 9 to 10. I don't know much about her side of the family. I do know that my grandfather was a veteran of World War 1. He came back uninjured. But he died in the flu epidemic that killed about a half million Americans.
My grandmother, from what I know was quite a party girl. LOL When her husband died, she turned my mother over to her husband's mother, and they raised her. They were not wealthy but were comfortable until the bank failure in 1929, they lost everything except I think their house. My parents took on my brother Jon and me to a tour of that area of Iowa and met some relatives. The neighbors were bootleggers.
My dad passed in 1994 at 80. He had a heart attack while working in the garden in the back yard. They said he was unconscious before he hit the ground. My mother died or various health problems caused by her smoking habit. She smoke a pack of day of Gold Aid cigarettes that are not made any more.
She was a typical Great Depression mother. She was a stay home mother, except for a few years at a local clothes store, "Three Sisters" to help pay the tuition for my sister Deloris hair dressing license. She dropped out of school after the eighth grade, so mom helped her.
Otherwise, she was a typical 1950's mother. She canned vegetables, made jelly, and filled our pantry and freezer. We rarely ate store bought canned vegetables, food or jellies etc. Typical of those who came of age in the Great Depression. She's been gone for 19 years and I think of both of them every day.
As I was born in 1951, I'm from the middle of the baby boomer generation. Times have changed.
Thoughts and prayers from the pastor's office of the church where I earlier preached a Mother's Day sermon in which I remembered my own mother who passed on two Thanksgivings ago.
Goodness!! May God bless you and your mom!!!. My 95 year old mom is having a stent implanted in her leg today....I can surely relate to the waiting game......Have patience and my thoughts go with you!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with you too.
I have become very spiritual, and I believe that I might help, so I'm hoping for the best Paul. I just sent it. And it's on full time today.
