Formerly a different story

Now  (by popular demand) an open thread about a Montana congressional candidate who was cited for misdemeanor charges of assault after altercation with reporter!

Political reporter says Montana candidate ‘BODY SLAMMED’ him

Footage from the scene...

  • Reporter claims there was choking, body slamming, and punching
  • Campaign claims reporter was instigator, made first contact, and both fell to the ground
  • Local police found probable cause to cite Greg Gianforte with misdemeanor assault, but no cause for felony assault

Bottom line: I couldn't give a bigger rip one way or the other. And I have almost zero faith in the ability of any reporter to actually tell the truth anymore. Sorry. I prefer to believe the local police and will wait till the facts are out there.... then I will still not give a bigger rip.

When will you condemn the assault on a journalist by he Republican congressional candidate in Montana?

When are you going to address Donald Trump's assault on the "enemy" of the press?

Trump is right about the press. Even Woodward said the press had gotten too smug.

And no one cares about some house candidate in Montana. If anything, it could turn into s joni Ernst like campaign moment.

Well Roger... so far you have the word of the Reporter in question and another reporter who admits to only having a partial view of incident... vs the word of the others who were actually in the room.

From the accounts of those actual first hand witnesses, it was the reporter that was the aggressor, made the first physical contact, and that both the candidate and the reporter ended up on the ground.

Gianforte might be guilty. He might not be guilty at all. My guess is that the reporter was at least as much to blame as the candidate in this case. But I will prudently withhold my judgement until we have all the facts...

and quite frankly... I don't really care that much and it won't matter by that time.

Besides.. I am not too terribly sure accusations of body slamming a reporter is going to make Montana Republicans shy away from Gianforte. It might make them "more likely" to vote for him.

But if he loses, they will just use these allegations as the excuse.

Especially republicans who will vote for the bully anyway. I'm betting he will win. You can also ask about the Ga 6th election, where record amounts are being spent for 1 lousy seat. If you haven't figured it out. these 2 special elections are referendums on the donnie and a measure of voter sentiment in sold red districts. Gonna be fun watching both.

Again, selective reporting by CH. There was a fox crew who witnessed the whole incident and corroborated the reporters story completely. Seems to me you are wishing the potential felon did nothing wrong, when the evidence says otherwise. Just like GW and defending donnie, you are blind to the facts.

Wanna try again, CH???? Again, your credibility is going negative with the abject opinions and lies you are perpetrating.

Trump won the Georgia district by two points... The Democrats marked this as a pick up opportunity from the get go after Price was picked to head the health and human services. Price still there, this is not a pick up opportunity.

If you want to look at it as a benchmark, the Democrats will need to move into territory where Trump won by double digits to pick up enough seats for a majority. So I would offer that anything under a six to eight point win for the Democrat may be a sign that winning back the House is a long shot.

If they cannot win an "open seat" in a toss up district by a significant margin, then how can they expect to have the sort of "wave election" that will help them pick up 10-15 points on incumbents?

“Barack Obama received a rock-star welcome in Berlin as he appeared at a public debate Thursday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, whom he praised as one of his ‘favorite partners’ during his presidency,” the AP reports.

The Guardian estimated the crowd at “up to 100,000 people.”

The police didn't charge anyone with a felony. Said felony charges were not warranted based on injuries and first hand accounts.

Legally: misdemeanor assault encompasses "minor injuries, touching, and threatening words or behavior".

Pretty sure felony charges would be warranted if a person actually grabbed someone by the neck (choking is automatic felony), body slammed them, and then started punching them (as alleged).

Greg Gianforte: Fox News team witnesses GOP House candidate 'body slam' reporter

By Alicia Acuna Published May 24, 2017 Fox News

The race to fill Montana's sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives took a violent turn Wednesday, and a crew from the Fox News Channel, including myself, witnessed it firsthand.

As part of our preparation for a story about Thursday's special election to air on "Special Report with Bret Baier," we arranged interviews with the top two candidates, Republican Greg Gianforte and Democrat Rob Quist. On Wednesday, I joined field producer Faith Mangan and photographer Keith Railey in Bozeman for our scheduled interview with Gianforte, which was to take place at the Gianforte for Congress Bozeman Headquarters.

Faith, Keith and I arrived early to set up for the interview in a room adjacent to another room where a volunteer BBQ was to take place. As the time for the interview neared, Gianforte came into the room. We exchanged pleasantries and made small talk about restaurants and Bozeman.

During that conversation, another man — who we now know is Ben Jacobs of The Guardian — walked into the room with a voice recorder, put it up to Gianforte's face and began asking if he had a response to the newly released Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act. Gianforte told him he would get to him later. Jacobs persisted with his question. Gianforte told him to talk to his press guy, Shane Scanlon.

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, "I'm sick and tired of this!"

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. Jacobs then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.
_____________

I guess Gianforte's repeated apology complicates Ch's knee jerk defense of him.

Not Much Good News for Republicans In CBO Report

David Nather: “You have to try pretty hard to find good news for the Republicans in the Congressional Budget Office report on the final House health care bill. Individual insurance premiums would go down in the long term — with some pretty important exceptions — and the House might not have to vote again. And that’s about it.”

New York Times: “The CBO… warned that a last-minute amendment made to win conservative votes would result in deeply dysfunctional markets for about a sixth of the population. In those places, insurance would fail to cover important medical services, and people with pre-existing illnesses could be shut out of coverage, the budget office said.”

Taegan Goddard says: "We don’t need a CBO score to see political suicide."

The conservative Billings Gazette.

I subscribed when I lived in Billings Montana.

We're at a loss for words.
And as people who wrangle words on a minute-by-minute basis, that doesn't happen often.
What happens even less — hopefully never again — is a Montana candidate assaulting a reporter. While there are still questions left unanswered about GOP House hopeful Greg Gianforte's altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, eyewitness accounts, law enforcement investigations and records are all shocking, disturbing and without precedent.

That's why The Billings Gazette editorial board is also doing something without precedent: We're rescinding our editorial endorsement of Greg Gianforte.
Although we're greatly troubled by this action against a member of the media who was just doing his job, to make this an issue of media intrusion or even a passionate defense of the role of a free press during an election would be to miss the point.
If what was heard on tape and described by eye-witnesses is accurate, the incident in Bozeman is nothing short of assault. We wouldn't condone it if it happened on the street. We wouldn't condone it if it happened in a home or even a late-night bar fight. And we couldn't accept it from a man who is running to become Montana's lone Congressional representative.
We will not stand by that kind of violence, period.
We previously supported Gianforte because he said he was ready to listen, to compromise, to take the tough questions. Everything he said was obliterated by his surprising actions that were recorded and witnessed Wednesday. We simply cannot trust him. Because trust — not agreement — is essential in the role of representative, we cannot stand by him.
While we clearly made a poor choice in our original endorsement, an even bigger mistake would have been to stand by it, or say nothing even though this editorial appears on Election Day and may open us to criticism of trying to unduly influence the outcome.
We'd point out that all the other questionable interactions Gianforte had with reporters, including one case where he joked about ganging up on a reporter, must now be seen through a much more sinister lens. What he passed off as a joke at the time now becomes much more serious.
To the voters who have not voted yet, we simply urge you to evaluate each candidate very carefully and make the best choice.
To those who have voted: Unfortunately, Montana does not allow those who voted early to reconsider and vote again. We're one of the few states that does not. This would seem to be the best reason we should urge our state leaders to change that law.
We understand that not all the facts about the case have come out, and that Gianforte should be allowed due process. But the eye-witness accounts and the recordings have stunned us. And a citation by the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office makes this more than a misunderstanding that can be spun by campaign staff.
We also hope that other longer-term lessons can be realized from this bizarre, deplorable scuffle.

First, we hope that Republican party members and leaders call this for what it appears to be, an inexcusable act. We hope that partisan politics has not eroded our decency to the point where leaders and supporters feel the need to defend the indefensible.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Ch is a devotee of defending the indefensible.

Once again, CH buys the fake story while ignoring the whole story that was immediately available from his favorite source Fox news. The bias is unmistakable, but will be denied by CH and company and will continue to blame the media for reporting bad news for R's while ignoring all the good things going on for trump care. This really is a joke, right CH?????? Maybe rathole should think before posting stupid comments, but that would take an act of god giving him a brain.. LOL

Opie -

I took nobody's word, Opie. I actually stated that I would wait till all the facts are out before "officially" stating that I couldn't give a bigger rip.

Rather I offered "both sides" of the story, along with the official police citation that states that the incident did not raise to the level of felony assault.

Only to a liberal would providing all sides (including that of authorities) be considered to be "biased". In the liberal world you always make an assumption, generally without the facts. Just because you consider that normal and fair... doesn't make it so.

And by the way, you put your hands around someone's neck. Lift them up over your head and body slam them. Then proceed to punch them, that would be a felony charge here in Minnesota.

Of course in Montana... perhaps they reduce the charges when the so called victim is a sniveling whiny pushy liberal journalist who probably deserved a good body slamming.

But that's your typical liberal reporter. All tough when it comes to shouting out questions... but apparently can't physically stand up to a 56 year old politician. Ouch... the old man body slammed me.

So let's break this down... the most reliable witness to this assault was a Fox reporter, but she was interviewed on MSNBC about the incident while her own network failed to cover it.

Not only does Faux News put their ideology ahead of facts, they put their ideology ahead of their own, should've been, could've been exclusive coverage, and ahead of the work done by their own employees.

Just like CH.....ideology before logic or facts. Faux outrage anything left...absolute forgiveness for any R behavior. Congressmen are blaming the media for the assault....I'm blaming the idiot montanan who is originally from New Jersey.....he sure learned well there.

I've listened to the audio of the incident - I assume you have also. It's obvious that the Montana candidate is lying about the sequence. If you can convince yourself to wave this off with "I don't believe any reporter", then the weird contortions of logic and mistaken notions about the law regarding obstruction of justice are less mystifying. It's simple, irrational denial.
