Obamacare "altering" vote coming today?

Let's face the facts... this is not a repeal and replace bill. This is little more than a subtle fine tuning of the overall law, done in such a manner that it offends the least amount of people possible. This is just a few steps above offering a bill that does nothing, and then asking legislatures to vote on it.

Although, ironically the Democrats would likely vote "no" even if the bill did nothing but confirm that the law stay in place.

(They have truly become the Party of "no" as well as the Party of "penis jokes")

I am guessing that Republican leadership would not bring forward the vote today, unless they had the support to pass it. Of course, the chances of getting sixty votes in the Senate is... let's just way... unlikely.

What's the point other than claiming a political "win" which clearly isn't much of a "win"... other than Donald Trump apparently talking a few congressmen out of making it a total loss.

UPDATE: Bill passes the house 217-213

Winning bigly?

Thanx obama.....for the brisk job growth he left behind. Bet you a buck, that you, kd, and trump will claim responsibility.

Claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a healthy labor market, for 113 straight weeks. That is the longest such stretch since 1970, when the labor market was smaller. The labor market is close to full employment, with the unemployment rate at a near 10-year low of 4.5 percent.

Pressure Grows on Vulnerable House Republicans

James Hohmann: “GOP leadership aides say they are mindful that the bill cannot pass by just one vote. They know that, if that happens, Democrats can run attack ads describing each supporter of the bill as ‘THE DECIDING VOTE’ on a measure that remains quite unpopular. How do they know this? Because they successfully used that talking point against Democratic senators for three election cycles in a row.

“Annoyingly for the strategists tasked with holding the majority, the number of Republicans with safe seats who are voting no is putting a lot more pressure on vulnerable members in swing districts to support the bill. These guys might normally get a pass because they’re going to face tough races in 2018. But House GOP leaders are now calling in all of their chits.”

Greg Sargent: “A Democratic leadership aide tells me that the CBO has confirmed to Democratic leaders that the CBO score will be completed and delivered next week or the week after. This means moderate and vulnerable House Republicans who are already worried about explaining to their constituents why they voted for the bill — which guts protections for the sick and rolls back coverage for millions of poor and working-class people while delivering a huge tax cut to the rich — will have to justify it again, in light of a nonpartisan analysis spelling out the grisly details of what they really voted for.”

Republicans Ask Their Members to Walk the Plank

Rick Klein: “With the American Medical Association and the AARP lobbying for no’s, plus Jimmy Kimmel’s breaking through with a searing personal story, nothing has changed about the basic politics, even as the bill itself has changed. (One thing that hasn’t changed in recent drafts, despite promises to the contrary: special treatment for members of Congress and their staffs.)

“Call it walking the plank, or ‘doo-doo stuck to their shoe’ (to quote House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi), but this is a vote and a move than can’t be taken back. Seven years of GOP promises haven’t changed the fact that Republicans have never really wanted to do what they said they wanted to do. They’re now led by a president who has said plenty of other things, and is more than willing to change where he stands anyway. Republicans are placing trust in their teamwork, on a bill where the impact will be determined in individual states and with unpredictable consequences.”

Anything that will effectively "neuter the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau" does far more than just allow banks to gamble with your money. You folks who are so concerned about protecting your privacy and personal financial information shouldn't really be celebrating this.

I have to take periodic online "training" regarding the CFPB and other financial laws and regulations, not that it really has much to do with my actual Software Engineering work. There is enough bite in them that even being careless with your data is the last thing that I'd contemplate doing. I'm sure that some executive is applauding, but I'll still have to study these laws and comply with them even with Trump attacking the protections, and as a consumer I hate to see the protections eroded.

Why on earth do you (anyone) LIKE the idea of Banks speculating in the stock market? What is it about consumer financial protections that vexes you so?

Commonsense said...

Dodd/Frank was directly responsible for institutionalizing "too big to fail".

The penalty for losing is bankruptcy and being bought out.

If the bank officers committed investment fraud, they go to jail.

That being said, they should be free to make any business decision they they want, reap the rewards when they make the right decision and suffer the consequences if they make a wrong decision.

What shouldn't happen is taxpayers bailing them out when they make a wrong decision.

That's what Dodd/Frank did.

George Will, a long time conservative and highly respected pundit, wrote a strung and very convincing comment in the Washington Post, with the real truth that tells us that we must stop Mr. Trump. Although I have usually differed with him, but his intelligence and understanding or political reality a;ways made e think beyond my opinion. But from the reality of Donald Trump, he has written intelligent coldheartedtruth about Mr Trump. That is missing from this site, so once in a while I waste my time demonstrating to those who have gone beyond a knee jerk love of Donald Trump, once he won the election.

I know that not one of the conservatives here will believe this. Even our esteemed host hs bought into the belief that anything that Donald Trump does not agree with, sees all things contrary to the opinion, aka "The Truth" so help e God and dismisses all other words by those who dare disagree with Mr. Trump are telling the "Fake Truth" . It has gone beyond political opinion to a quasi-Religious belief in Mr Trump's as a religious figure who can do no wrong.

Trump has a dangerous disability.

t is urgent for Americans to think and speak clearly about President Trump’s inability to do either. This seems to be not a mere disinclination but a disability. It is not merely the result of intellectual sloth but of an untrained mind bereft of information and married to stratospheric self-confidence.

In February, acknowledging Black History Month, Trump said that “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more, I notice.” Because Trump is syntactically challenged, it was possible and tempting to see this not as a historical howler about a man who died 122 years ago, but as just another of Trump’s verbal fender benders, this one involving verb tenses.

Now, however, he has instructed us that Andrew Jackson was angry about the Civil War that began 16 years after Jackson’s death. Having, let us fancifully imagine, considered and found unconvincing William Seward’s 1858 judgment that the approaching Civil War was “an irrepressible conflict,” Trump says:

It goes far beyond his inability the see the facts as facts, not just an opinion as he said to a reporter of CBS News: You can believe what you want" and walked away. The question was on the false claim that the Obama administration wire tapped the Trump tower in New York.

This site won't let post videos, or photographs, or long word commentary.

As president-elect, Trump did not know the pedigree and importance of the one-China policy. About such things he can be, if he is willing to be, tutored. It is, however, too late to rectify this defect: He lacks what T.S. Eliot called a sense “not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence.” His fathomless lack of interest in America’s path to the present and his limitless gullibility leave him susceptible to being blown about by gusts of factoids that cling like lint to a disorderly mind.

Americans have placed vast military power at the discretion of this mind, a presidential discretion that is largely immune to restraint by the Madisonian system of institutional checks and balances. So, it is up to the public to quarantine this presidency by insistently communicating to its elected representatives a steady, rational fear of this man whose combination of impulsivity and credulity render him uniquely unfit to take the nation into a military conflict.

What flies over your head, Pauline, is you spend more time to responding and C&Ping than it takes me to post my own drivel. The irony of your stupidity is caught on everyone but you. Thanx for keeping your obsession alive. Idiot.

Still have one opening for a $400,000 speaking engagement as long as you supply teleprompter, else will be slightly more.

And why do people care that Obama doesn't even use Obamacare? Do they think I am stupid?

The Dems' strategy is now to show Senate Republicans EXACTLY what they'll get if they side with Trump:  A catastrophe for them and GOP legislators up and down the ballot.

James said...

Wow. Charles Krauthammer gets real with Republicans:

Krauthammer: "In Less Than Seven Years, We Will Be In A Single-Payer System"

Charles Krauthammer on Thursday's Special Report said the American people's views on health care has evolved and thus, ironically, Obamacare wins the day. Krauthammer said health care is not being argued by Republicans in terms of the free market anymore; it is seen now as something the government ought to guarantee.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I think historically speaking we are at the midpoint. We had seven years of Obamacare, a change in expectations. And I would predict that in less than seven years, we will be in a single-payer system. I think that's the great irony of this.

Obamacare failed at every level. Politically, the Democrats were crushed over six years and four elections, whereas you say, they lost seats in the House, the Senate, the governorships, etc. largely because of Obamacare.

It failed on the ground, as was pointed out earlier. The insurers are in a death spiral. The Obamacare exchanges are collapsing. You've had these exchanges, these community exchanges completely disintegrating. But the irony is in the end, I think Obamacare wins the day because it changed expectations. Look at the terms of the debate. Republicans are not arguing the free market anymore. They have sort of accepted the fact that the electorate sees health care as not just any commodity. It's not like purchasing a steak or a car. It is something people now have a sense that government ought to guarantee.

US created 211,000 jobs in April, vs 185,000 jobs expected

Job creation in April bounced back from a disappointing March, with nonfarm payrolls growing by 211,000 while the unemployment rate fell to 4.4 percent, its lowest since May 2007.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had been expecting payroll growth of 185,000 and the headline jobless rate to tick up one-tenth to 4.6 percent. The payroll increase nearly tripled the dismal March number.

Market experts believe the report likely cements an imminent interest rate hike.

"The market has sorely needed a shot of unambiguously positive 'hard' data," Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said in a statement. "This morning's employment report suggests the Fed will most certainly move in June."

James is DEVASTATINGLY wrong again.

Answer : No, the Labor Market and Unemployment has raced past the Lost Years with low unemployment not seen at all during those Lost Years.

Trump has lower Unemployment as reported by the headline unemployment number and by the U -6, but not as low as reported by HB when he said and I quote.

i suppose it's because i'm old enough to remember when people who were on the public tit were ashamed of the fact, and they worked extremely hard to become self-reliant again one day." RRB

Exactly.

When Alky comes to from his latest drunk. maybe he will tell us where he ever got the idea that the following was ever true?

Is it true, as Krauthammer says, that Obamacare has changed the expectations of Americans and they now regard healthcare as a RIGHT to be made available to all and facilitated by the government?

And is it true, as Krauthammer says, that Obamacare has ironically won the day and in less than seven years we will have a single payer system? :-)

If so, the Obama legacy is assured.

Or maybe it will be successful like Australia with patients getting timely care and costing 1/2 as much as is spent now....And Obama will be worshiped as much as your cultist hero.

Unemployment has raced past the Lost Years with low unemployment not seen at all during those Lost Years.

Thanx to the policies of obama with 88 consecutive months of job growth had nothing to do with the 4.4% rate. I'm sure that trump ripping off workers contributed to the growth.

And yet all of this lost years happened under Barack Obama and all of those high paying jobs didn't materialize until the inauguration of Donald John Trump.

Think how growth will explode when all that capital starts flowing back to America because of the Trump Tax Reform Act.

opie said...

Lost years for whom....Idiots like you. Doubling wall street values, saving the car industry and job creation under obama stand on their own. All those high paying jobs are part of your own delusion which trump did nothing to create. Most of those feel good items from ford, carrier, and others were being planned well before trump came on the scene. Capital expenditures in big companies take years to plan and finance. You obviously have no idea how that process works if you give trump credit for them. The only thing that will explode is your head when the trump tax plan is as well written as trump care. Idiot

opie said...

Just as I predicted in the first post of this thread, trump was credited for creating jobs.

Menstral child posted... didn't materialize until the inauguration of Donald John Trump.

Thanx obama.....for the brisk job growth he left behind. Bet you a buck, that you, kd, and trump will claim responsibility.

Claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a healthy labor market, for 113 straight weeks. That is the longest such stretch since 1970, when the labor market was smaller
