Jeff Sessions Testimony

UPDATE: End of hearing - I thought Sessions was a good witness for the Administration. I believe his opening statement cut much of the liberal red meat off at the knees. Where there was a difference between what Comey stated and what Sessions said, I am predisposed to believe Sessions, since the DOJ has offered actual proof that Comey was either lying (or mistaken) about a couple of these things. If Comey was lying/mistaken on some of it... it's hard to demand he was the one telling the truth about the rest of the differences.

The Democrats (and liberal media) will claim that Sessions' lack of answers regarding communications between Trump and himself is somehow proof of something. But this was neither unexpected or unprecedented.

UPDATE: 3:44 CST - How many times are the Democrats going to ask the same question regarding Sessions not answering questions that might be considered privileged information? One might think that they have more to ask than one question over and over and over? Apparently not.

UPDATE: 2:54 CST - This is not going well for the Democrats. Feinstein was obviously frazzled, and whoever it was who just yelled at Sessions looked like a fool. I have never really been a "big" Jeff Sessions fan, but he has been a very solid witness.

Short of Jeff Sessions admitting he leaked information to the press for self-serving reasons, he should be seen as more objective than James Comey.

_____________

Unless there is an extremely odd change of events, the Sessions testimony today will likely be even a bigger "nothing burger" and the Comey testimony was. In fact, based on what people close to Sessions are saying is that he wanted a public hearing so he could dispute some of what James Comey has stated.

Other than the Democrats asking the "high drama" questions about Jeff Sessions (when he was a Senator) speaking with the Russian Ambassador (which is what Senators and Ambassadors do)... there doesn't seem to be much earth shattering that hold much potential damage for Sessions. There does, however, seem to be a lot of chance that his testimony might undercut things that James Comey stated last week, or at the very least muck it up.

I originally projected that the Comey testimony might do more to help the Administration than harm it. While there is definitely a partisan split on how that testimony went, there is no question that there are many who came out that testimony with that very opinion.

I am projecting something similar today.

The Shakespeare play "Julius Caesar" was once produced by Orson Wells in such a way as to make Caesar look like a Nazi, wearing a similar uniform, etc. People still look back on that as an appropriate commentary on how all dictatorships need to be opposed.

Will future generations look back on this production in a similar way?

If so, Adolf Trump will have only himself to blame.

Senate Bars Reporters from Filming In Hallways

“Reporters covering the U.S. Senate have been told they can no longer film interviews with senators in the hallways outside their offices, an abrupt break with precedent that has set off alarm bells for journalists and media watchdogs,” CNN reports.

“The announcement, which comes as Senate Republicans are drafting a health care bill in a process shrouded in secrecy, prompted a flurry of tweets from concerned journalists who feared the move would enable the Senate to conduct public business in private and without accountability.”

Senate sanctions to reverse Obama's 'Iran first' policy

The latest confirmation of the Obama administration's support of Iran's terrorist activities was provided to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on June 8, 2017 by David Asher, who for many years worked with the United States government on counter-terrorist financing-related issues. According to Asher, "[i]n narrow pursuit of the P5+1 agreement, the administration ... systematically disbanded any ... action ... to dismantle Hezb'allah and the Iran 'Action Network' ... [for fear these would] derail the administration's policy agenda focused on Iran."

Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), who chairs the committee, denounced the Obama administration in April 2016 for allowing Iran "to launder dollars while the administration looked the other way." The hearing he held last week aimed at finding new ways to curb Iran's and Hezb'allah's international crime syndicates that fund its terrorist activities.

One day before the Senate voted on advancing the "Countering Iran's Destabilizing Activities Act of 2017," former secretary of state John Kerry argued against "the danger" of new sanctions. "Our bellicosity is pushing them into a corner," and the imposition of new sanctions after old ones were relaxed with Obama's deal with Iran could be seen as a "provocation" by Iran, he warned. His former counterpart, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif, followed suit, calling the newly proposed sanctions "repugnant."

Trump Says House Health Care Bill Is ‘Mean’

Congressional sources say President Trump has told Republican senators that the House health care bill is “mean” and that the Senate version should be “more generous,” the AP reports.

“The remarks were a surprising critique of a Republican-written House measure whose passage Trump fought for and embraced. They also seem to undercut efforts by Senate conservatives to impose restrictions in their chamber’s legislation, such as curbing the Medicaid health care program for the poor and limiting the services insurers must cover.”

As the unemployment rate drops to its lowest level in 10 years, optimism among voters that the U.S. economy is fair has soared to new highs.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 61% of Likely U.S. Voters think the U.S. economy today, generally speaking, is at least somewhat fair. Trump faces swift backlash after allies push Mueller firing
‘The best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job,’ Speaker Paul Ryan
said.

While White House aides are saying President Donald Trump has no plans to fire Robert Mueller, his surrogates have been pointedly questioning the special prosecutor's ability to fairly do his job.

President Donald Trump’s allies have been pushing the rumor that he might fire special prosecutor Robert Mueller. Much of the rest of Washington is trying to knock it down.

On Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said he knows of no reason to oust Mueller, who is overseeing the FBI’s probe into Russian meddling in the election and possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Kremlin. He added that he would resist any inappropriate calls from Trump to remove him.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said he has “confidence” in Mueller and delicately warned Trump against firing him. "The best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job,” Ryan told reporters.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Some of the most forceful pushback on Tuesday came from Rosenstein, who — unlike Trump — has the direct power to fire Mueller.

“I’m not going to follow any orders unless I believe they are lawful,” Rosenstein testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee about potential directives from Trump.

Rosenstein told lawmakers that he knew of no reason to date to fire Mueller. “Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence he needs to conduct the investigation appropriately,” he added.

Trump can’t fire Mueller directly but could, in theory, order Rosenstein to do so and dismiss the deputy attorney general if he didn’t comply. That would then allow the president to seek out someone who would obey his order to terminate Mueller.

Rosenstein suggested he would be willing to take the hit, telling the committee that unless there were “good cause” to fire Mueller, “it wouldn’t matter what anybody said.”

Special counsel team members donated to Dems, FEC records show

Washington (CNN) — Three members of the legal team known to have been hired so far by special counsel Robert Mueller to handle the Russia investigation have given political donations almost exclusively to Democrats, according to a CNN analysis of Federal Election Commission records.

More than half of the more than $56,000 came from just one lawyer and more than half of it was donated before the 2016 election, but two of the lawyers gave the maximum $2,700 donation to Hillary Clinton last year.

Over the weekend, news outlets including CNN identified five attorneys that Mueller has already brought on board to help investigate potential collusion between associates of President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia.

Newt Gingrich: Special counsel team full of 'bad people'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said the legal team assembled by special counsel Robert Mueller is full of "bad people" who are "going to be after [President] Trump."

"These are bad people," Gingrich said in an interview Tuesday with ABC News. "These are people who are going to be after Trump. He did not hire a single Republican in the first wave."

Gingrich, who previously praised Mueller on Twitter, changed his opinion of the man the Justice Department tapped to oversee the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election Monday. Now, the former House speaker thinks Republicans are "delusional" if they think Mueller and his team is going to be fair, in part because he has hired people who have consistently donated to Democrats.

"We're in a different world," Gingrich said. "If you look at the intensity of where we are right now, whether it is someone holding up the bleeding head of the president or a New York play showing the assassination of the president, we're in a period where if people think this is going to be a neutral, professional investigation, I think they're delusional."

janes said...

Gingrich attributed his change of heart over Mueller and his investigation to former FBI Director James Comey's testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence last week. During his testimony, Comey told senators he leaked the contents of a memo detailing a conversation he had with Trump to the New York Times in order to spark the appointment of a special counsel.

Comey's plan ultimately worked, and the Justice Department tapped Mueller — a friend of Comey's — to oversee the probe not long after the New York Times published its article.

"Things go on right now that are unthinkable," Gingrich said. "I'm operating — it doesn't seem to effect the news media — I'm operating in a world where someone can hold up the bleeding head of a president, someone can assassinate the president in a play, and people go oh, that's just politics."

Jeff Sessions crushed his Senate hearing on Trump and the Russia investigation

As Sessions made clear by quoting specific Justice Department rules, the attorney general not only was absolutely right to recuse himself from the Russia investigation but also was duty-bound to do so. Despite what the conspiracy-mongers imply, that obligation applied for reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with his involvement with any of the matters under investigation. And despite what Trump appears to believe, the recusal did not make it more likely — indeed, it could have made it less likely, if Trump had kept his mouth and Twitter finger stifled — for the Russia investigation to more thoroughly engulf the administration.

In the midst of all the breathless fulminations from both sides, Sessions was a model of decorum. He was cordial and respectful, but firm and unyielding; he was as forthcoming as possible on all matters on which he thought he was rightly allowed to be forthcoming, and also quite open about why he could not be forthcoming on others.

(When he said he felt obligated not to discuss private advice he gave to the president, he also made clear that the obligation was only conditional and limited, just so as to retain the president's legal rights for the short-term until a decision on "privilege" could be responsibly reached. At least for the immediate purposes of this hearing, Sessions is indisputably correct: A temporary retainer of the rights of the executive is what any executive official owes the president, until the White House and its counsel can consider the legal ramifications.)

"I think Jeff Sessions helped himself quite a bit," said John King on CNN just after the hearing ended.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Wow! A real dialogue is going on between "janes" and James.
Without name calling and obscenities. Exactly what I have been advocating.
Wow!
___________

President Donald Trump has "no intention" of firing special prosecutor Robert Mueller, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday night.

"While the president has the right to, he has no intention to do so," Sanders said when asked during a gaggle aboard Air Force One whether Trump will fire Mueller.

Sanders' remarks — which came after more than a day of Trump surrogates floating Mueller's ouster — marked the first time the White House has made a clear statement about the special counsel's status.

Trump can't technically fire Mueller on his own. But he could order the attorney general to do so. However, because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russia investigation, Trump would have to order Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to fire Mueller.
___________
And then if he refused fire the next and the next and the next, right on into IMPEACHMENT.

Trump’s move to deport Iraqi Christians stirs outcry

Many of the people detained in weekend raids were from Michigan, a swing state Trump barely won in 2016.

President Donald Trump is facing anger and potential political blowback as his administration ramps up efforts to deport Iraqi Christians, a group he’d pledged to protect from what the U.S. calls a genocide in the Middle East.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents over the weekend detained dozens of Iraqi Christians and others to send back to Iraq. Many of them were picked up in Michigan, a swing state that Trump barely won in 2016 and the home of a sizable number of Christians from Muslim-majority countries who backed Trump during the presidential campaign.

The deportation effort has alarmed lawmakers who have tried to raise awareness about the plight of Chaldean and other Christian communities in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East. Those communities have struggled to survive under the reign of the Islamic State terrorist group.

Removing the detainees from the United States “represents a death sentence should they be deported to Iraq or Syria,” Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), who has family and religious links to the Middle East, said in a statement.

Christian activists are scrambling to file legal challenges to the deportations and coordinate with sympathetic lawmakers. As the news has spread, so has the feeling that Trump has betrayed the affected Christian community, activists said.

“He promised he would help us, when in fact he’s exacerbated problems now by sending people back to the hands of the Islamic State,” said Steve Oshana, an Assyrian-Christian activist with the group A Demand for Action.

Senate Intel Committee Member Says Collusion Investigation Has Gone Nowhere

A Republican member of the Senate Intelligence Committee suggested on Tuesday that the panel has uncovered no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government, even after reviewing thousands of pages of documents and conducting numerous interviews.

Idaho Sen. James Risch made the comment while questioning Attorney General Jeff Sessions during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

“We’ve been through thousands of pages of information, interviewed witnesses and everything else. We’re really no different than where we were when this whole thing started,” Risch said to Sessions.

“And there’s been no reports that I know of of any factual information that regard it. Are you aware of any such information of collusion?” he asked.

Sessions took Risch’s questions to be a reference to the dossier of Trump opposition research compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele.

“Is that a rose from the dossier, the so-called dossier? Is that what you’re referring to?” Sessions asked.

“It I think has been pretty substantially discredited, but you would know more than I,” he said of the document, which was published on Jan. 10 and makes various uncorroborated allegations about Trump and his campaign’s ties to the Russian government.

“But what was said that would suggest that I participated in continuing communications with Russians as a surrogate is absolutely false.”

The Senate panel began its general investigation into Russian meddling in the election in mid-January, at around the time the dossier was published and before Trump took office.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer has said, "Democrats are ready to work with President Trump to fix Obamacare if Republicans abandon their drive to repeal the law," but a column by Scott Ehrlich at thefederalist.com points out that the only way to "fix" the current law is to "double down on the parts people hate" – namely, to increase and enforce the individual mandate and to guarantee more subsidies to insurance companies (emphasis in original):

This is important because the only ways [sic] to tweak the ACA and make it sustainable, while not eliminating the benefits, is to take the parts people hated and make them more prevalent. This is no doubt why Democrats are so desperate for Republicans to work with them on repair now, when they had no issues passing the initial law on party lines. Any effective repair would be extremely unpopular, and they have no desire to walk that cliff alone.

Since even a Republican Congress is not dumb enough to go along with that, Democrats have no other avenue but obstruction and doomsday scare tactics.

David Catron at spectator.org confirms that Democrat fears that Senate Republicans are "easing ACA [the Affordable Care Act] toward the abyss."

Catron notes that two recent major procedural steps pave the way for the repeal and replace bill:

The Senate parliamentarian ruled that repeal can be passed via reconciliation and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell fast-tracked the process by invoking "rule 14," which permits the Senate to skip laborious committee hearings that Democrats planned to use for protracted grandstanding.

As Catron observes, implementation of Rule 14 takes away another forum for the Democrats' "portentous predictions of death and destruction." The major issue remaining for Senate Republicans, says Catron, "is the speed at which Obamacare's Medicaid expansion is tossed onto the ash heap of history." Once that is resolved, and a Congressional Budget Office score is received, the vote-counting can begin:

8:34: Whoa. We’re getting confirmation that a person thought to be the shooter asked another congressman if those were “Republicans or Democrats” playing. Shortly after that the shooting began.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., told Fox News he left just before the shooting. As he walked to his car, a man asked DeSantis if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. About three minutes the shooting began, DeSantis said.

I'm not surprised. The venom and vitriol from CNN alone is enough to prompt this.

Throw in people like Roger, James and Opie.....

Really? I don't think so. The only culture war is being waged by the right to vindicate the stupidity of trump. LOL. Note loretta again can only post the usual others thoughts and add vitriol to her bias. Dayum funny at the spin.

Mr. Opie said he "knew" the root cause of this shooting, when given the chance to make his point , he fell back on nothing vapid name calling silliness.

Proving he did not know the cause of this shooting.

on another topic, coal, it is not dead, even by Mr Opies own writings here he made the case for coal and its use in making electricity and iron.

So wrong that it is dead.

I would like to see Mr Opie dial back his emotions.

Will he be able to control himself, Doubtful.
