Mad Scramble in the U.K. for control...

A result of all this may be that GB may not, after all, leave the EU, or if they do (and they probably will), in a more gentle way than May has been advocating.

It will be interesting to see if May survives the rebellion within her own party.

Brexit is going to happen; the only question was how to manage the separation in terms that were most favorable to Great Britain.

Right now it doesn't look to promising for the Brits.

I believe many are advocating staying with May for a while at least to avoid even greater chaos.

Conway Overheard Leaking to Reporters

Playbook: “Kellyanne Conway was overheard talking about her West Wing co-workers to fellow revelers at a party. Conway was having an off-the-record conversation with a group of reporters and other attendees at the British Embassy at their election-night watch party.”

She said President Trump told her to “go out there and say ‘Jim Comey is going to have to wait and see about the tapes.'

“Conway also mimicked Reince Priebus urging White House aides
to stop leaking, and wondered aloud what Marc Short — the legislative director — does all day. She also said she is ‘the one catching the slings and arrows in the West Wing.’

The source who heard Conway created a Twitter account about the evening, naming it @kellyanneleaks and posting photos and tweets from the event. Two other sources confirmed Conway’s remarks.”

The GOP Failed and Now We’re Stuck with Trump

Jeff Greenfield: “Everything we have seen in these first 140 days—the splintering of the Western alliance, the grifter’s ethics he and his family embody, the breathtaking ignorance of history, geopolitics and government, the jaw-dropping egomania, the sheer incompetence and contempt for democratic norms—was on full display from the moment his campaign began. And that’s not just what Democrats think—it’s what MANY PROMINENT REPUBLICANS HAVE SAID ALL ALONG.

“So this may be a good time to remember that in a key sense, Trump happened because a well-established, real-life mechanism that was in the best position to prevent a Trump presidency failed. That institution was the Republican Party.

“But either by cluelessness or willful design, the Republican Party had put itself in a position where one of the most significant functions of a party—the ‘vetting’ of its prospective nominee—was rendered impotent.”

It's going to take a LONG time for the GOP to get over this, imho.

“The Republicans have spent eight years insisting that they could produce a better health-care-reform plan if they had the chance. They have come to realize that this promise was false. The only thing they can do is rip away the benefits Obamacare has given millions of Americans. Their sole objective now is to do so with the minimum level of transparency or accountability.”

Mr. Comey and All the President’s Lies
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD

EXCERPTS:
Weeks after being described by Donald Trump as a “nut job,” James Comey on Thursday deftly recast his confrontation with the president as a clash between the legal principles at the foundation of American democracy, and a venal, self-interested politician who does not recognize, let alone uphold, them.

In sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mr. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, made clear that he had no confidence in the president’s integrity. Why? “The nature of the person,” he said. Confronted with low presidential character for the first time in his career, Mr. Comey began writing meticulous notes of every conversation with Mr. Trump. “I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting,” he said.
____________

...Russia, Mr. Comey usefully reminded the senators, had gone to unprecedented lengths to disrupt the 2016 presidential election, using “overwhelming” technological firepower.

“This is about America,” Mr. Comey kept saying. Russia “tried to shape the way we think, we vote, we act — that is a big deal,” he added. “They’re coming after America. ... They want to undermine our credibility in the face of the world.”

And yet Mr. Trump, the beneficiary of Moscow’s meddling, has never appeared even slightly concerned by this Russian attack. He told Mr. Comey to stand down and fired him when he refused. “I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” Mr. Comey testified. “That is a very big deal.” As he decried Russia’s attempt to “dirty” American democratic institutions, Mr. Comey could as well have been talking about Mr. Trump’s behavior.
_____________

With restrained fury, Mr. Comey described President Trump’s remarks last month that the bureau was a mess and that the director had lost the trust of his agents as “lies, plain and simple.”
___________

After firing Mr. Comey, Mr. Trump thought he’d cow him by tweeting about the possibility that their private conversations were taped. Mr. Comey bested him with a single sentence on Thursday, telling the panel he hoped there were tapes, as “corroboration” of the abuse of power he’d witnessed.
_____________

Republicans asked why he didn’t try to educate a president so ignorant of the F.B.I.’s role that he risked incriminating himself. But Mr. Comey wasn’t suggesting Mr. Trump was foolhardy or inexperienced: He portrayed him as an unscrupulous leader whose request put the nation at risk. The Russia investigation, he said, is “an effort to protect our country from a new threat that quite honestly will not go away anytime soon.”
____________

There is an aspect to public servants like Mr. Comey that Mr. Trump and his administration seem unable to comprehend, to their peril — a dedication to their roles that places service above any president’s glory.

Alternative headline: Global Warming is not as bad as we thought:

NASA: Key Antarctic Glacier Not Melting As Rapidly

Despite what liberals may say about global warming, science is never a settled issue. That’s what you should glean from this. The studies can be wrong. The models can be wrong. And the question nations face concerning so-called global warming is whether they wan to invest hundreds of billion, if not trillions, of dollars on a group of people who have been wrong before. How much economic growth, decreased standard of living, less prosperity, and the accompanying misery will you artificially inflict among those in your society on predictions that have been grossly inaccurate? In the 1970s, global cooling was the threat that could spell mankind’s doom. Nothing ever happened.

So Opie, how much prosperity are you willing to sacrifice on the alter of global warming.

opie said...

Maybe you should read the Nasa report like I have before you post an opinion piece from the biased town hall.. You are really a joke. Seems refining the models to take into consideration factors that were not known. Gee science progressing just as it should while you ignore GW. LOLOLOL IOW's global warming keeps trucking along unimpeded and sea level rise has been slightly modified but remains unchanged Thanx for playing, child.....

Maybe you should actually have read the link I provided:

Peter Gwynne has gone back and updated his 1975 Newsweek piece to deny climate change skeptics of using is as ammunition. Still, he had to change it because the science was wrong—and Gwynne admits that. He said that this field of study is always advancing. Yet, if you speak to these green warriors, the issue is settled. There is no more debate.

I beg to differ.

Get that? The article actually existed, and now they are backtracking.

Commonsense said...

And you still haven't answered the central question:

How much prosperity are you willing to sacrifice on the alter of global warming?

wphamilton said...

Global cooling was a media creation in the 70's based on a few speculative papers, citing mainly historic glacial cycles. No scientists then would have predicted cooling in peer-reviewed studies.

It is not analogous to modern climate science and climate change.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

global warming alarmists and proponents sacrifice none. they are the beneficiaries of the mountain of government cash we piss away each year perpetuating the myth.

personally i'm going with the explanation that global warming is a social construct. if that explanation is good enough for something rooted in actual biological proof as gender, it's good enough for climate.

wphamilton said...

How much prosperity are you willing to sacrifice on the alter of global warming?

To prevent the suffering of future generations, including famine and disease and the strife that goes along with it, as much as it takes.

You have it backwards. "Prosperity" owns the alter, and anything which might degrade "prosperity" is secondary. Even the likelihood of boundless human suffering, wars and slaughtering the ecosystem is not enough. One has to put a number to it, how much change in "prosperity", before taking any action.

We must not view this as if these are opposing interests of two Gods. Do what it takes, and then worry about how "prosperous" we are.

indeed. let me know when we actually do this. every scientific model i've seen has failed to be followed by a corresponding economic model containing the cost to fix the problem. to date we've simply been satisfied with spraying around tens of billions of $$$ to make ourselves feel like we're "done something" without knowing if what we've actually done has produced a quantifiable result.

all we've accomplished is the personal enrichment of those charged with the "doing of something."

nice work if you can get it. ask elon musk, the most government subsidised human on the planet.

Commonsense said...

To prevent the suffering of future generations, including famine and disease and the strife that goes along with it, as much as it takes.

Your answer is the modern equivalent to "We had to burn the village in order to save it."

The "solutions" to address global warming will actually precipitate famine, disease and huge economic disruptions and in the end will not significantly alter the rate of temperature increase or decrease in 100 years.

wphamilton said...

Your answer is the modern equivalent to "We had to burn the village in order to save it."

No just the open sewer running down the middle of it. And the lead pipes providing running water to those more prosperous hovels.

You're afraid that we can't have the village if we mess with sewage disposal, and how many resources it takes to pipe it underground? All those villagers digging for pipes, making pipes, instead of working the fields increasing "prosperity". And take away the rich guy's running water? What will the village businesses do? No way!

wphamilton said...

indeed. let me know when we actually do this. every scientific model i've seen has failed to be followed by a corresponding economic model containing the cost to fix the problem.

For real, or you're just not aware of them? If I knew how to get it funded, I think I could undertake this. I could handle the computing infrastructure and big data analysis, get a few economists on board to determine baseline commodity costs, some mathematicians, and project through the system. I'll bet $5-$10 million would cover it.

Commonsense said...

No, your solution is to not have the sewer at all.

Commonsense said...

The fact that one does not exist despite the relatively cheap price to produce one should tell you something.

wphamilton said...

Better to have people carry their honey-pots out of the village, or pay a service to do it, than to have an open sewer. Yep, that would cost resources and lessen the "prosperity" of folks as opposed to the convenience of the open sewer. As would building an underground one.

Yet, we do not have open sewers in modern villages, and we do not have people dumping their honey-pots in the streets. Modern, prosperous villages. Your prosperity impact is a false economy.

wphamilton said...

The fact that one does not exist despite the relatively cheap price to produce one should tell you something.

1. Is it true that we don't have any decent economic impact studies,

2. I think that the technical challenges are the main hurdles. The ability to process and analyze terabytes of data hasn't been around that long.

Commonsense said...

Your "solution" will not contain waterborne disease nor clean up the environment.

Better to create a close sewer system and burn a little carbon to run it.

You do know Gwynn is not a scientist, he is an author who was writing for Newsweek. Newsweek also retracted the article in 2014.

Yet, if you speak to these green warriors, If I spoke to green warriors, I would be in Menstral land. WTF is a green warrior???? Are they scientists or cultists like you????? Yer still an idiot.

opie said...

Here is why I admire menstra boys tenacity for being stupid. He uses Town Hall opinion as fact where the actual author is here writing how idiotic his original writing was. Sad, he will still deny that the 1970 piece was wrong and he was brainwashed by his cult that GW is a hoax...

n April 28, 1975, Newsweek published an article entitled “The Cooling World,” which posited that the Earth was entering a state of global cooling and that meteorologists were divided only on the cause and extent of the trend.
Image Copyright Adam WardImage Copyright Adam Ward
On Wednesday, the article’s author, Peter Gwynne, wrote a thoughtful piece on how outdated the article is and how tired he is of various conservative and anti-environmental groups using it to deny global warming.
“[A]fter decades of scientific advances,” he writes, “let me say this: While the hypotheses described in that original story seemed right at the time, climate scientists now know that they were seriously incomplete. Our climate is warming—not cooling, as the original story suggested.”
Despite this fact, and the accumulation of several more facts, Gwynn laments that “certain websites and individuals that dispute, disparage, and deny the science…continue to quote my article.”

http://www.planetexperts.com/peter-gwynne-recants-infamous-newsweek-article-global-cooling/

I don't expect menstral to recognize his error or admit being wrong. He never does.

Despite all your blustering Opie you cannot honestly dispute the following:

1. The article existed.

2. It was based on the educated opinions of "scientists" at the time.

Now you are saying those "scientists" were wrong.

However if the "science is static" and "there's nothing to debate", how could they be wrong then?

And if those scientist were wrong then, isn't there an equally good chance they are wrong now?

I don't think the debate is closed nor should it ever be.
