Recap: Did not live up to the expectations..

I watched two live blog/tweet sites today. One liberal and one conservative. As expected the two reached different conclusions for the most part...

but there was agreement on two major things....

The first was that nothing really new came out that would further implement the President or any of his associates. The second was that John McCain is losing his f-n mind.

The liberal site (Politico) offered at the end a couple of opinions: One was that there is a lot to "digest" along with the suggestion that the testimony was "damning" for the main reason of substantiating some of what already has been said. The suggestion was that the right cannot refer to it as unsubstantiated anymore. While another opinion was that the testimony probably allowed Trump supporters to wash it all away as nothing new.

The conservative site (Breitbart) had an entirely different take.  They offered it as a big nothing burger as it pertained to harming the President. Moreover, they are suggesting that the Comey testimony ultimately caused more problems for himself (admitted to leaking material that would most certainly be described as executive privilege) and for Lynch (who he suggested did pressure him in regards to the Clinton email investigation).

My personal take on this is that it offered one distinct clarification. That Comey felt pressured over the specific General Flynn investigation, but could not point to any attempts to obstruct the larger investigation into Russians, Trump campaign, etc...

This is probably the most important legal point that was made. I think it's awful hard (as pointed out in previous posts) to suggest that the President can be charged with obstruction for offering that a specific person should not be prosecuted. Past examples of other Presidents exercising this discretion, along with the existence of the Presidential Pardon offers both historical and constitutional proof of the authority of the President to make these sorts of determinations.

Well, President Trump's Lawyer just publically lynched Loretta and The Cowardly Lion Comey.

Comey suggested the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller would probe the question of obstruction further.

“I don’t think it’s for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct,” he said, adding, “The special counsel will work … to try and understand what the intention was there.”

It ain't close to being over. To the sycophants, being confronted by the POTUS hoping something would be done, is clearly being lectured to. Yes there were no direct orders, but being cornered, alone with donnie can certainly be construed as an order. Oh well, I am sure our esteemed host never had a boss who was intimidating even when not asking for something. Trump won nothing but he personally was not under investigation at the time . My guess is that is no longer true. LOL

The testimony is over.
The leaks appear to have dried up.

I look for a rehash of old news as new for the forseeable future, probably to the point where nearly everyone sees it as ridiculous.

The investigation itself?

More likely to find evidence of bigfoot than criminal collusion.

"Cowardly Lion" - that IS one of the things that really bothers me with Comey. Maybe the main reason that I don't trust him at all.

Why didn't he ask the President to clarify his instruction? Seriously, what was Comey thinking there, what could have possibly been his motivation?

Picturing this ... he's already uneasy that Trump cleared everyone out of the room. He feels like Trump was pressuring him, giving him a directive but ambiguously, that Comey felt was inappropriate. Or perhaps criminal. Why on Earth do you not say, "Mr. President, are you directing me to end the Flynn investigation?" Or at least, what are you asking of me? It is the President - don't you want to know, NEED to know, exactly what he's after?

Was Comey worried that Trump wanted him to do something illegal, and wanted to leave the President with the idea that he was on board? Was he giving the President plausible deniability, but if so WHY? Or was Comey all in at that point, hoping thereby to stay in the President's good graces?

The same thing with Lynch when she ordered him to downplay the Clinton investigation by referring to it as "a matter". Comey realized that she was coordinating with the Clinton campaign - he claims now - but he goes along? Shouldn't he have been asking her questions at that point, you know, FBI stuff? But Comey goes along with it, propping up the Clinton campaign in the Primary, and then tries to stab them in the back later.

If Comey had had the backbone and integrity then, to keep politics out of his FBI investigation, perhaps he wouldn't have been tested later by President Trump and just maybe if he was, he wouldn't have failed that test.

Looking at it that way, it's not that unreasonable for Trump to expect Comey to fall in line. He'd already done it once, and people like Trump can smell that kind of weakness. The only thing that surprises me is Trump not anticipating him stabbing him in the back when he got the chance.

Well we'll see. It won't be easy for Mueller to reach Obstruction based on Comey's testimony anyway. Unclean hands for one thing, and who the heck can ascertain Trump's intent from one sentence, given the idiotic statements he comes out with? That's not happening.

Collusion, that's still a big question. If there IS collusion, there are four or five people involved at least and one of them will crack. Let's face it: Trump's people aren't smart enough to keep it together, and those secrets will tumble out eventually. If we DON'T see that happen, then there really is nothing there and all of that suspicious behavior really is just a bunch of guys in over their heads after all, just bumbling about. Keep an open mind; either is possible and we'll see soon enough.

Removing Trump Is a Longshot but So Was Electing Trump

Evan Osnos: “By any normal accounting, the chance of a Presidency ending ahead of schedule is remote. In two hundred and twenty-eight years, only one President has resigned; two have been impeached, though neither was ultimately removed from office; eight have died. But nothing about Trump is normal. Although some of my sources maintained that laws and politics protect the President to a degree that his critics underestimate, others argued that he has already set in motion a process of his undoing. All agree that Trump is unlike his predecessors in ways that intensify his political, legal, and personal risks. He is the first President with no prior experience in government or the military, the first to retain ownership of a business empire, and the oldest person ever to assume the Presidency.”
_______________
The really bad thing about Trump is that he neither knows how to be President nor knows that he does not know, and for that reason listens to no one.

C.H. Truth said...

If there IS collusion, there are four or five people involved at least and one of them will crack.

WP...

- Flynn is under investigation for other matters (only "touches" the Russian probe according to Comey).
- Manafort is another separate investigation that is based largely on previous allegations of international money laundering that involves Russian businesses.
- Page is "barely" a Trump associate (loosely connected according to sources) and appears to be a businessman who has connections in Russia.
- Stone is another person "loosely" associated with Trump who boasted that he knew Guccier and had ties to Assange. He seems more like a braggart who wants you to believe he had inside information.
- Cohen? Accused of having Dinner with a Ukrainian politician? Seriously?
- Kushner? Only called a person of interest, but never considered a target. Seemingly being asked about discrepancies between his disclosure of foreign meetings and records that show that he might have missed one or two.

The main problem is that none of these people who are said to be part of the investigation are tied to "each other" in any manner that anyone can tell. They are missing some sort of "connection" - some sort of "organization" if they are looking for collusion.

The parts seem weak, and the sum of the parts may even be weaker.

Expressing it even better:
Trump Doesn’t Understand His Job

Jack Goldsmith: “Trump does not remotely understand his role, status, and duties as President and Chief Executive, and this failure infects or undermines just about everything he does. It is an amazing state of affairs: A President of the United States who does not at all grasp the Office he occupies, and who thus entirely lacks the proper situation sense, or contextual knowledge, in which a President should exercise judgment or act. Let that sink in, and then imagine all of the decisions a President must make, all that he is responsible for.”

House Intel Committee ranking member Rep. Adam Schiff said that if Trump has been taping in the White House, those tapes would be the best proof of obstruction of justice.

Schiff was asked if the Comey dinner alone was enough to prove obstruction of justice during an interview on CBS’s Face The Nation.

He answered, “The difficulty and I look at this also as a former prosecutor. Can you prove obstruction based on the President’s own words? When we don’t know if we can believe this president. We already know that there are those close to Comey who have a very different take, also a troubling take on that dinner conversation, so I’m not sure you can prove the case based on this, but if there are tapes, of course, that would be the best evidence of what took place. If they exist, Congress needs to get them. If they are not provided willingly, Congress should subpoena them, and if they are not in existence if this was yet another fabrication by the President, he needs to come clean about it.”

EXCERPT FROM THE WASHINGTON POST:
National Security
Comey: White House lied about me, FBI
By Devlin Barrett, Ellen Nakashima and Ed O'Keefe June 8 at 8:38 PM

Former FBI director James B. Comey on Thursday used a dramatic appearance before a national audience to sharply criticize the character of the president, accusing Trump of firing him over the Russia investigation and then misleading the public about the reasons for the dismissal.

Trump and his team, Comey said, told “lies, plain and simple,” about him and the FBI in an effort to cover up the real reason for his sudden sacking last month. Comey said that after one particularly odd private meeting with the president, he feared Trump “might lie” about the conversation, prompting him to begin taking careful notes after each encounter.

Comey revealed that after he was fired, he leaked notes on his interactions with Trump to the media, hoping that sharing the information would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the administration over possible links to Russia.

Trump has at last commented on the Comey testimony with a tweet:
' "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication...and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

Yeah, Comey did leak the contents of a memo he carefully kept about a conversation with Trump. He did that, both the keeping and the leaking, because he did not trust Trump to be truthful, especially after his first meeting with the Liar in Chief.

Comey noted, "...my judgment was, I needed to get that out into the public square...and so I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. Didn't do it myself, for a variety of reasons. But I asked him to, because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel."

Another reason was because, Comey said that after Trump had fired him, the administration "chose to defame me, and, more importantly, the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader... Those were lies, plain and simple, and I am so sorry that the FBI workforce had to hear them and I'm so sorry that the American people were told them."

In that context, Trump and the denizens of this blog are the only people on the planet who see him now as "totally and completely vindicated" LOL.

If that were true, there would be all sorts of pressure to stop the continuing investigation. Yet even Republican reps are calling for openness about any tapes Trump may have made of Comey. Either admit that they exist and release them or admit that Trump (sort of) lied about that too.

This is my own commentary. You're welcome. James :-)

What Republicans Are Saying This Morning

Playbook: “Forget what the White House thinks of yesterday’s testimony. We spent the day in the Capitol, talking to Republican members of Congress — the ones that have to vote on President Donald Trump’s agenda — and they were absolutely shocked at how poorly yesterday went for the president. Publicly they say that the president is a political neophyte who is still learning the presidency. But privately, they said James Comey was extraordinarily convincing and Trump’s team absolutely botched their response. They’re all afraid of more shoes dropping.

“Trump’s political standing on Capitol Hill is growing more and more perilous. Meanwhile, the RNC’s principal rebuttal seemed to be that the Obama administration had a bad day — which is true, but almost entirely irrelevant.

“Republicans were shocked just how well Comey came across. He didn’t try to jam his viewpoint down the committee’s throat, he was confident but not cocky and admitted, on several occasions, that his impression of his interactions could’ve be faulty, but the evidence otherwise seemed overwhelming to lawmakers.”
____________
And to the thinking public.
