What do these people have in common?

Who needs enemies with friends like this?

Bob Corker, Steve Daines, Mike Enzi, Joni Ernst, Deb Fischer, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham, Chuck Grassley, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Mike Lee, John McCain, Jerry Moran, Rand Paul, James Risch, Ben Sasse, and Pat Toomey....

Yes, they were the 17 Senators who voted against the Harvey relief bill that also funds the Government through December. Some Republicans were pushing for an 18 month extension to be tied to the relief, and some Republicans were hoping for a stand alone relief bill for Harvey. But the President cut his deal with those (mainly Democrats) who wanted a shorter term debt ceiling increase attached.

Interestingly (and not too surprisingly) the list of Republicans is a virtual who's who of never-Trumpers in the Senate. If a Republican Senator is on record as being a Trump critic (Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Rand Paul, Ben Sasse, etc...) he or she is likely on this list. Other critics (like Marco Rubio) simply didn't vote.

It makes you wonder how much of this vote was simply a personal issue for these people. Did they really not want to fund the government through December and provide relief to the victims of Harvey?  Hard to make that argument with a straight face. More likely. these 17 were simply finding another reason to reflexively oppose the President at every turn.

Maybe some day, these people will wake up and realize that "they" are pretty much the sole reason why nothing is getting done.

Most of them stated they opposed it because there is no increase in military spending in the bill.

But you're right. Nothing is getting done and at been going on for are too long of a time. And like you said most of them are not the big fans of Donald Trump. McCain and Graham especially made me wonder what the heck. They are the ones that said the bipartisan action is necessary. Now I'm sure some of them were looking at getting reelected in 2018 but just this is just ridiculous. This goes back to basically perhaps Jimmy Carter or or at least Bill Clinton. Bipartisan actions were very very rare rare. Newt Gingrich lost his job as Speaker because he worked with Bill Clinton on welfare reform. Our system is designed to work on a bipartisan well not really because I didn't have parties at the time but there was still have to negotiate and and get things done. They're not doing it now most of the time that's disturbing. To both of us CH to both of us.

what???

And if you look at the Obama Administration. The Republicans effectively opposed everything proposed by President Barack Hussein Obama. We all remember the famous we don't want to let him get reelected comment. George W bush got some things done on a by partisan basis even though it was probably not a good idea the tax cut got quite a few Democrat votes.

tell the lie again and again until it becomes accepted as truth.

we are saddled with the shitpile of 0linsky-care because of the one party rule of dear leader's first two years. fact is, the dumb fuck could've run the table with any number of marxist/socialist wet dreams if he knew how to govern instead of simply campaign.

blaming the GOP for 0linsky's failures is as much of a lie as saying that southern racist democrats switched to the GOP en masse.

and yeah alky, the GOP didn't want 0linsky to get reelected.

no shit.

so tell us with a straight face that democrats don't feel the exact same way about trump.

only a coward needs a scapegoat to blame the failings of their hero.

Omg, so wrong, according to alky, no parties existed at the time the US Constitution was signed.

Flat wrong.

I have to educate the rrb who is a f****** idiot.

Wikipedia.
Political parties in the United States are mostly dominated by a two-party system. However, the United States Constitution has always been silent on the issue of political parties; at the time it was signed in 1787, there were no parties in the nation. Indeed, no nation in the world had voter-based political parties. The need to win popular support in a republic led to the American invention of voter-based political parties in the 1790s.[1] Americans were especially innovative in devising new campaign techniques that linked public opinion with public policy through the party.[2]

Political scientists and historians have divided the development of America's two-party system into five eras.[3] The first two-party system consisted of the Federalist Party, who supported the ratification of the Constitution, and the Democratic-Republican Party or the Anti-Federalists, who opposed the powerful central government, among others, that the Constitution established when it took effect in 1789.[4] The modern two-party system consists of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Several third parties also operate in the U.S., and from time to time elect someone to local office.[5] The largest third party since the 1980s is the Libertarian Party.

Commentary on the DACA controversy frequently notes that the nation's nearly 700,000 so-called Dreamers are a law-abiding group. But a new bill to give DACA recipients full legal status, sponsored by Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake and Democratic Sens. Richard Durbin and Chuck Schumer, would allow newly legalized Dreamers to have many run-ins with the law -- arrests, charges, convictions -- and still receive benefits. Schumer, the Democratic leader, is demanding quick passage.

How is it the self proclaimed genius and most astute political observer in a millennia is always wrong?

Welfare reform was passed beginning in 94 and vetoed by bubba 2 or 3 times until prior to the 96 election. Gingrich resigned after 98 midterms when the r's had the worst showing in 64 years

Yeah, either it was Newt helping pass conservative welfare legislation that was crafted by the Rockefeller Foundation that got him cast out...

Or it was the ethics violations he was officially reprimanded for in 1997 and the poor 1998 election...

One or the other...

C.H. Truth said...

btw... 1996 welfare reform:

Republicans voted

226 aye
4 no

Democrats voted

30 aye
165 no

So I guess it would make sense that Newt would be in big trouble for getting Clinton to sign a bill that 98% of Republicans votes for... and 85% of the Democrats voted against.

Gingrich's so-called "Contract with America" was ultimately immensely unpopular and with the election losses as mentioned he lost the confidence of the Republican House and his personal problems were leverage for his abrupt ouster.

Hardly anything got done from his agenda. Two government shutdowns, the welfare reform compromise, that's about it. Squandered political potential, kind of like the Republicans today under President Trump.

He was likely getting bored with the job part of the job, too.

There's an anecdote about Newt that I've shared here before. Probably made up, but apropos. A visitor to Bob Michel's office saw a row of filing cabinets against a wall, with a single folder lying on top of one with a few sheets of paper in it, and asked Michel (the House Minority Leader) what they contained. Michel responded that the filing cabinets contained all of the great ideas Newt Gingrich (then the second ranking Republican in the House) had come up with, while the folder contained all of the great ideas Newt had followed up on.
