Doug Jones attempts a hail mary pass...

But... it turned out to be this:

Wow! Now that's not offensive at all? Is it?

OK I just wrote this in the other thread but it really answers the question here. Maybe it does:

I think, in any "normal" election in Alabama, the Republican is practically automatic and therefore Jones needs something drastically different, such as voters staying home. Therefore, were I him, I'd utilize that big advantage of funds and advertising to make people sick of the election, give up in disgust and stay home, and hope that enough Democrats and minorities can sneak out to the polls to snag a surprise win.

The ad is disgusting on more levels than I want to think about. It fits the bill nicely, if you're flooding the channels with ads to make people sick of the election.

you will never be able to take the Klan out of the democrat party.

it is hard coded in their DNA.

C.H. Truth said...

It's a reasonable argument under certain circumstances... but polling has suggested that Moore is doing best with those most likely to vote, and his lead drops when you include those who might choose to vote. It appears that Jones needs a higher turnout with younger voters, minority voters, etc...

Of course, this is not exactly inconsistent with any election, especially a mid-term. The smaller the turnout, the better it generally is for Republicans, whereas the larger the turnout, the better it generally is for Democrats...

Commonsense said...

There is also an ad from a group connected to the Jones campaign that said your votes are public record and we will know if you voted for a pedophile.

Google pull the ad. The Alabama secretary of state had to assure the public that their ballots were indeed secret.

Jones is desperate but this is flat out voter intimidation and should be illegal even though the target voters may be mostly white.

wphamilton said...

I know, but is that necessarily true in a state which is overwhelmingly Republican, with a candidate who is in some respects rather extremist?

Where in normal circumstances a Republican candidate can expect 65% of the vote for instance, a smaller turnout helps him to 68%, is that maxim (though generally true) really meaningful? With any normal turnout, I think that Moore wins because strongly partisan voters aren't likely to show up just to vote their own party's candidate down. I think that Jones needs to concentrate on keeping people home, not on getting them motivated to vote. Every Republican who doesn't show up, doubles the vote of some Democrat who does. That's where most of Jone's votes have to come from.

Air enough obnoxious ads that Moore's campaign has to talk about them, then air more ads about his reactions. The churn will nauseate everyone except the highly partisan, and that's where Jone's chances are.

Commonsense said...

I really think this will backfire on Jones. It will drive more and more Republicans to Moore and independents too.

C.H. Truth said...

There are considerably more highly partisan Republicans in Alabama than there are highly partisan Democrats.

But to explain exactly what I am arguing. A recent Gravis poll showed that Very likely voters favored Roy Moore, Somewhat likely voters were nearly exactly split, while marginally likely voters favored Jones by a fairly large amount.

Those who claim to be "very likely" to vote, are not staying home because the decorum of the election falls into the gutter. They got the date circled on the calendar. But those marginally likely to vote are way more likely to become disgusted with both candidates and simply stay home.

Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that he is sticking to his position that GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore should drop out of his Senate race in Alabama, despite the decision by President Trump to formally endorse Moore. Moore faces a series of allegations ranging from pursuit of teenage girls while he was in his 30s, to sexual contact with a 14-year-old and sexual assault of another teen.

"My position hasn't changed," the Wisconsin Republican said at his weekly press conference. "I think he should have dropped out...just because polling has changed, doesn't change my opinion on the matter."

"I stand by what I said before," he added.

Good for him.

Add this infamy to all the other crimes of the liberal establishment – its poisonous influence has converted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in the eyes of the American people, from a proud institution dedicated to upholding the law into just another suppurating bureaucratic pustule. Where once we saw FBI agents as heroes – many of us ancients grew up watching Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., every Sunday night – now we see careerist hacks looking to suck-up to the Democrat elite while bending the law and subverting justice to do it. Truly, everything liberals touch dies.

The revelations about Oh-So-Special Agent Peter Strozk shouldn’t surprise anyone, as bad as they are. Even that hack Robert Mueller couldn’t keep him all-board the Russia Soft Coup Express after Strozk’s anti-Trump texts to his FBI mistress came out. Shocker – this is the same Democrat-loving clown who watered down the Felonia Milhous von Pantsuit investigation conclusions (helpfully drafted months before the investigation concluded). Oh, and he oversaw the unsworn, unrecorded interview of his special gal (not the one he was cheating with; the one with the taste for Chardonnay and failure who would have helped his career as a reward for his slavish devotion had she not botched running against Donald Trump). He was also in on the ambush of LTG Mike Flynn, who he and his scuzzy compadres decided to prosecute while the Harpy, Huma and all the rest of the Clinton Nostra got a pass.

Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore stunned some listeners when he said he thought America was “great” during the era of slavery. Though he made the comments at a campaign rally in Florence, Alabama, more than two months ago, they’ve re-emerged in a viral tweet just days before the election.

Back in September, one of the few African-Americans in the crowd asked the candidate when he thought was the “last time” America was great.

“I think it was great at the time when families were united. Even though we had slavery, they cared for one another. ... Our families were strong, our country had a direction,” Moore responded, according to a Los Angeles Times report in September.

At the same rally, he also referred to Native Americans and Asians as “reds and yellows,” the LA Times reported.

Byron York: Dossier author was in contact with Obama Justice Department

The news also stunned some of those who had been investigating the matter. Yes, they knew that knowledge of the dossier extended to some officials in the FBI. That was bad enough; how could the FBI endorse and consider underwriting one campaign's dirt-digging operation in the middle of a hotly contested election? But now investigators know that nearly the highest levels of the Obama Justice Department were also aware of the dossier.

Investigators believe the dossier's sensational allegations of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign played a role in the beginning of the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into the Trump-Russia affair — an investigation that later morphed into special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., whose investigation has led to a number of revelations about the dossier, was unhappy to learn about such a key piece of information months after the investigation began. Ohr's contacts with Steele and Simpson were covered by a subpoena Nunes issued to the FBI and the Justice Department on Aug. 24. Yet as recently as Tuesday, when Nunes, along with House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., met with deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, the department said nothing about Ohr's role.

This this not how the FBI and the DOJ is supposed to be run. Sessions needs to un-recuse himself, get some balls. and enforce the supeonas.

Roy Moore's claim that America was 'great' during slavery resurfaces, sparking huge backlash

Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore has sparked outrage among many on the left once again after his comments on slavery from a campaign event earlier this year resurfaced this week.

At the event, which took place when Moore was still facing fellow Republican Luther Strange for the party's nomination, an audience member asked Moore the last time America was great.

"I think it was great at the time when families were united -- even though we had slavery -- they cared for one another ... Our families were strong, our country had a direction," Moore responded, according to the Los Angeles Times.

His reference to slavery appears to indicate that Moore believes that America was last great before the Civil War. As many progressives on Twitter noted, while some American families may have been intact during this era, slave families were routinely broken up and as members were sold for profit.

The report also noted that the question was asked by one of only a handful of black people who had attended the event.

The comments were initially reported in September but went viral on Thursday when a former Obama administration official tweeted about them.
