Politico Obama Hezbollah conspiracy story quietly ignored...

Yeah, yeah... I know. Obama is no longer President, so why bother?

But isn't this sort of a major deal? Shouldn't we actually bother to look into the charges that a criminal drug trafficking plot, that was used to fund an international terror organization was protected by our own Executive branch in order to secure an agreement with Iran?

We all realize that there is a statute of limitations on criminal activity. But those limits are not automatically reached when a President is out of office. This could be a huge criminal scandal that would have even larger political ramifications....

Why do you suppose everyone (other than Fox News) is ignoring it?

A reviewof of the first year of President Putin.

Andrew Sullivan wrote this and I find ing co rrbenglish 😎

What are we to make of Vladimir Putin’s first year in the White House? How has he done?

I’m only slightly kidding. Or rather I’m just channeling a CNN interview earlier this week with James Clapper, former director of National Intelligence. Here’s what Clapper said: “I think this past weekend is illustrative of what a great case officer Vladimir Putin is. He knows how to handle an asset, and that’s what he’s doing with the president […] You have to remember Putin’s background. He’s a KGB officer. That’s what they do. They recruit assets. And I think some of that experience and instincts of Putin has come into play here in his managing of a pretty important account for him, if I could use that term, with our president.”

Clapper clarified his statement by saying he was being figurative, rather than literal. So let’s just ask a figurative question, shall we? How successful has the Kremlin’s figurative investment been this past year? Pretty damn impressive

I'm on my phone so no link right now.

To fill their top spot on the House Judiciary Committee, Democrats had a choice between experts in two critical policy arenas — a constitutional-law ace with firsthand experience battling Donald Trump, and an architect of sweeping immigration legislation.

By a wide margin, they chose the constitutional-law expert. Why? To ready themselves for a battle with President Trump that could end with impeachment proceedings.

The selection of Rep. Jerrold "Golden Corral" Nadler (D-N.Y.) as the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee was the clearest sign yet of how seriously House Democrats consider the possibility of a full-blown constitutional showdown with Trump.

It’s ‘very gold’: Presidential ‘challenge coin’ undergoes a Trumpian makeover
In Trump’s version of the coins, used by presidents for decades, the presidential seal and the national motto, “E pluribus unum,” are gone. But his name appears four times and his official campaign slogan appears twice, a move some ethics experts found questionable because the coins are often given to members of the military as personal mementos.

Maybe his portrait on the front would be even more ostentatious and satisfying for our child in chief...

For two decades, the commander in chief has doled out distinguished-looking coins as personal mementos. Now, the presidential “challenge coin” has undergone a Trumpian transformation.

The presidential seal has been replaced by an eagle bearing President Trump’s signature. The eagle’s head faces right, not left, as on the seal. The 13 arrows representing the original states have disappeared. And the national motto, “E pluribus unum” — a Latin phrase that means “Out of many, one” — is gone.

Instead, both sides of the coin feature Trump’s official campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

The changes don’t stop there. In addition to his signature, Trump’s name appears three times on the coin, which is thicker than those made for past presidents. And forget the traditional subdued silver and copper: Trump’s coin, a White House aide marveled, is “very gold.”

looks awesome to me.

poll published Wednesday may give Republicans reason to worry, even as GOP lawmakers pushed through their first legislative achievement of the Trump administration.

A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that 56 percent of respondents said they would most likely vote for a Democrat in next year's midterm election. Just 38 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for a Republican.

According to CNN, that 18-point advantage is the largest since the organization began polling about the 2018 elections. The news outlet said that it is also the widest margin it has seen in two decades at this point in the election cycle.

These results come after other recent polls found double-digit advantages for the Democrats. A Quinnipiac poll published Tuesday put that figure at 15 percentage points. A NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll also published Tuesday had that number at 11 points.

McConnell has told many in private that the Republicans will lose both houses. The woman vote is going to be the blue wave.

Within hours of celebrating President Trump’s biggest legislative achievement, at the South Portico of the White House on Wednesday, his aides and outside advisers had a spirited, and at times tense, discussion with him about the political outlook ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

The gathering saw tempers flare as aides vented their frustrations with electoral defeats this year and concerns about the 2018 political map, according to several people with knowledge of the discussion. Complaints about the president’s political operation and the Republican National Committee boiled over, playing out in front of the president as an inner-circle drama.

The late-afternoon meeting — attended by White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, counselor Kellyanne Conway, political director Bill Stepien, marketing and data specialist Brad Parscale, communications director Hope Hicks and political consultant and confidant Corey Lewandowski, among others — quickly became a griping session for Lewandowski and others about the way the White House manages the GOP and handles its planning for what is sure to be a hotly contested campaign season, people familiar with the meeting said.

Lewandowski told the president that the RNC was not raising nearly enough money — even though the party has raised record sums — and not doing enough to support his agenda. The former Trump campaign manager also griped that he could no longer get his calls returned from the White House, these people said, and was being blocked by the president’s assistant and others under the direction of Kelly

The President was angry and frustrated. He still hasn't figured out why a majority of the voters, especially women, can't stand him.

McConnell and others are all convinced that unless something changes, the House and Senate will be in the hands of the Democrats.I don't agree with him often, but Steve Bannon is certain that Trump will finish his first term and the Democrats are going to regain control.

Indy Voter said...

Eh. Still not a given that Democrats take the Senate, even if the current dissatisfaction continues. Sean Trende, who is bullish on Democrats' chances, is only giving them a 70% chance. And he includes caveats about the current environment continuing.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Cook political report says that the Republicans are in serious trouble.

what could calm or even reverse the hurricane-force winds that are currently blowing from right to left? Before any election, there is always the possibility of a “Black Swan,” an unexpected development with seismic consequences that completely changes the political environment in the way that the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 did. But short of such a Black Swan event, what could change things? If we are wrong about this current political climate, how are we wrong?

The only plausible theory that I can come up with is the economy. We have seen growth in gross domestic product for the last two quarters of 3 percent, and economic growth in the fourth quarter figures to be in the same neighborhood. Joblessness is down to 4.1 percent—pretty much full employment—and the stock market and consumer confidence are regularly hitting record highs. This raises a question about political gravity: How can economic factors be so good while President Trump’s job-approval ratings, currently around 36 or 37 percent, are the lowest of any newly elected president in the history of modern polling?

But what if the economy continues to grow at this pace through the November 2018 election? What if unemployment remains at such a low level, consumer confidence stays high, and people’s 401(k) retirement funds continue to grow? Would six quarters of a buoyant economy ease the disenchantment of Republican and conservative voters, the anger of independent and centrist voters, and the intensity of opposition toward both Trump and the Republican Congress among Democratic and liberal voters? Would the economy have ameliorative effects strong enough to save the GOP majority in the House and allow Senate Republicans to pick up Democratic seats in traditionally Republican states?

Remember when President Clinton was plagued with the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Republicans impeached him in the House and put him on trial in the Senate? The economy was strong, the country was doing well, and Americans decided to stick with him despite behavior that one could assume would have cost him the presidency under other circumstances. The strength of the economy was the major factor in saving his presidency. Could six quarters benefit Trump and his party in the way that it helped Clinton and his party 20 years ago?

Basically if the economy has been an unexpectedly overwhelming, the President's strong disapproval will still bring it down as it into the gutter.

Generic Republicans vs Democrats if you're realistic, shows how bad it looks for the Republicans.

Trump's ratings are at historical lows. The Democrats are raising far more money than the Republicans.

The women's vote is going towards the Democrats. In the college educated white suburban women voters are tending towards the Democrats across the country.

Trump is the most potent political weapon for the Democrats across the country. Virginia and Alabama https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/ are just the start of the blue wave. The Democrats are going to surf that wave into Nancy and Chuck congress.

The Gallup Poll earlier this month showed a 5-point decline for Republicans in national party identification, while an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday indicated that Democrats now have an 11-point lead in the national generic congressional ballot test, 50 to 39 percent. This represents their biggest lead since September 2008, on the eve of Barack Obama’s presidential win and strong Democratic gains in the House and Senate. Should the generic hold at that level, shift in control of the House from Republicans to Democrats would be very likely. The Democrats would also likely make gains in the Senate, though not necessarily gaining a majority. That same NBC/WSJ poll showed that Democratic voters, by a margin of 10 points, were more interested in the midterms than Republican voters, which is consistent with what we saw in the recent Alabama and Virginia elections.

The numbers don't lie. The President does it every time he speaks outside the script. His description of the tax reform bill were simply false.

2016 was obvious, all of the political punditry including the sage of mahogany ridge expected a Clinton landslide even though the economy is stagnant and she represented the same old, same old.

In 2010 and 2014 president Obama had great "job approvals" however the economy was still bad and most people felt we were going on the wrong track.

The Democrats got shellacked both times.

It still comes down to Carville's observation "it's the economy stupid".

The tax cut will be popular. (Why would a law that puts money back into the pocket of 80% of the people not be popular?)

And if the economy hums along at 3 to 4 percent growth in 2018, it is nothing but good news to the GOP.
