Well let's start with this. 2017 is a year where there seems to have been a lot more obvious losers, than there has been obvious winners. That being said, it was certainly a good year for the economy, the judiciary, and some select others.
Honorable mention:
Israel: Finally got some much needed backing from their main traditional ally, the United States. After eight years of being treated as if they are a pseudo-enemy, they have a friend in the Trump White House.
The Market: started 2017 19,762 - ended 24,719. Enough said.
Retailers: Big year and an even bigger holiday season. While the overall trend has been more online sales, and less brick and mortar, this was good year for both.
Second runner up:
Me-too movement: While I am not 100% sure this is necessarily a big win for society, it's certainly a win for those making allegations. The movement has successfully brought down Hollywood icons, major celebrities, as well as slew of politicians.
First runner up:
President Trump: This one is not necessarily intuitive, but the fact that Donald Trump is still President (when so many believed he wouldn't make it a year) is a win in and of itself. No impeachment. No resignation in disgrace. No 25th amendment coup to remove him for cause. Factor in a recent recovery of his approval (back to 40% in RCP averages), a big win down the stretch in taxes, and it's clear that the President exceeded the expectations many had for him.
2017 Winners of the year
Federal Judiciary: The court was strengthened this year at an unprecedented rate. All in all, Trump got a USSC Justice (Gorsuch), a DC Court of Appeals Justice, and eleven other Circuit Court Justices confirmed in 2017. Considering all of these Justices could have been nominated by Hillary Clinton rather than Trump. this is a huge win for the Judiciary. President Trump will be President, at best another seven years. But his mark on the judiciary will last for decades.

Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The Oregon Court of Appeals upheld a $135,000 fine on Thursday against two Christian bakers who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.
The decision marked another chapter in the longstanding dispute between the bakers, Melissa and Aaron Klein, and the couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer, which goes back to 2013 when the Kleins refused to provide service and the Bowman-Cryers filed a discrimination complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.
The Kleins argued that they shouldn't be forced to make a cake in celebration of a gay wedding because it offends their religious beliefs, but the court ruled that that defense is a slippery slope that would allow more types of discrimination.
"The Kleins seek an exemption based on their sincere religious opposition to same-sex marriage," Judge Chris Garrett wrote in the opinion, according to the Register-Guard. "But those with sincere religious objections to marriage between people of different races, ethnicities, or faiths could just as readily demand the same exemption."
