Let's be clear...

Trump is not responsible for the Russians meddling of the election... he never was.

The Obama Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and everyone else responsible for our national security back in 2016 is responsible. Why this seems relatively hard for people to grasp is what is otherwise known as cognitive dissonance. In this case, specifically a belief disconfirmation of a cult-like nature.

Isn't it interesting that the very people responsible for counter-intelligence, preventing our national security interests from being compromised, and protecting the American public, are now the very people trying to pass blame to someone who wasn't even in charge when any of this happened? They all conveniently point their finger at the big, bad, boogie man himself... Donald Trump. He's the one to blame! Oh, and btw... they will all tell you that he is a dumb incompetent buffoon, but it's their argument that he has been outsmarting them all six ways from Sunday. But, hey, maybe they can string him up for something like obstruction.

Moreover, those who were actually responsible for allowing the Russians to meddle, are ironically the very ones doing the lion's share of the investigation. They are in fact investigating their own paid for claims that it wasn't them who was responsible. They would like us to believe that it was an illegal conspiracy. In fact, they've been trying to prove that it wasn't their fault for nearly two years now, and are still drawing a blank.

Interestingly, almost nobody on the left sees a problem with any of this.

Everyone who was involved with the meddling, at any time, wittingly or witless, was responsible for it. You might say that there are varying levels of responsibility, and the FBI should have been more pro-active, but those more directly involved have greater responsibility IMO.

And it should be noted, we don't know yet that members of the Trump campaign are not among the willing conspirators mentioned in the latest indictment. Odds are, there will be coming indictments of US citizens.

and at the pace of the investigation, we should see those indictments around 2024.

so let's see...

we've gone from "colluding" to "meddling," and indictments have been issued for basically "trolling."

Do you understand that there is a difference between responsible or participant?

Collusion is participating in an illegal operation.

It's well established that the Russians set up a plan to intervene in the American electoral system, in 2014. In no way in the report issued on Friday, even said there was any collusion. But in no way does that report or anything else to make the claims repeatedly that it was s "Hoax" or an "excuse" created by the Democrats to attack the President. The Russian intervention ended up being an attack on the election in favor of then candidate, Donald J.Trump.

"Moreover, those who were actually responsible for allowing the Russians to meddle, are ironically the very ones doing the lion's share of the investigation. "

You are saying that the FBI and the DOJ are the ones responsible for the Russian intervention into the 2016 election?

What are you on?

It happened on their watch, Roger.

Didn't it?

Muellers indictment shows that this has been going on for years, right under the noses of our intelligence agencies, and they apparently didn't notice, wasn't able to figure it out, or perhaps didn't really care that much.

Russian meddling also affected the 2014 election as well. Why was their no big investigations into Russian meddling in 2014? Why is it that they waited until they could figure out a way to tie the investigation to Donald Trump, that it suddenly became important.

geezus alky, in liberal land isn't anyone in government ever responsible for anything???

had 0linsky not politically weaponized them both to pursue his political enemies instead of letting them do the jobs they were originally charged with, it's conceivable that russia (to the extent that it actually did) would not have been able to interfere, meddle, or whatever the mueller word of the day is to describe what they did.

and just think - if we had an FBI focused on law enforcement instead of politics, 17 children might be alive today.

you know, when you stop and really think about it, the sum total of the 0linsky administration really only excelled at one thing - the politics of personal destruction. land on their enemies list and they would go to the ends of the earth to destroy you, but when it came to just a competent level of governing, they simply were not capable. or just didn't fucking care.

Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who confessed to killing 17 people at a Florida high school this week, was part of a private group chat in which he and five other people frequently shared racist comments, memes, and videos, CNN reported.

Cruz often discussed his hatred for minorities, including Mexicans, black people, Jews, gays, and immigrants.
In the days since the massacre, students, teachers, and neighbors have described Cruz as an isolated individual with violent tendencies.

The group involved Cruz and five other people who CNN said appeared to be under the age of 18. In addition to denigrating minority groups and immigrants, members posted hundreds of racist messages, memes, and videos to the private chat.

Cruz reportedly said he hated black people simply because of the color of their skin. When a member of the chat group mentioned gay people, Cruz replied, "Shoot them in the back of the head."

While all the participants espoused overtly racist beliefs and demonstrated an obsession with violence and guns, Cruz appeared to be the most extreme.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

ROD ROSENSTEIN: The indictment charges 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies for committing federal crimes while seeking to interfere in the United States political system, including the 2016 presidential election.

The defendants allegedly conducted what they called information warfare against the United States, with the stated goal of spreading distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general.

According to the allegations in the indictment, 12 of the individual defendants worked, at various times, for a company called Internet Research Agency, LLC, a Russian company based in St. Petersburg.

The other individual defendant, Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin, funded the conspiracy through companies known as Concord Management and Consulting, LLC; Concord Catering; and many affiliates and subsidiaries. The conspiracy was part of a larger operation called Project Lakhta. Project Lakhta included multiple components, some involving domestic audiences within the Russian Federation, and others targeting foreign audiences in multiple countries.

Internet Research Agency allegedly operated through Russian shell companies. It employed hundreds of people in its online operations, ranging from creators of fictitious personas, to technical and administrative support personnel, with an annual budget of millions of dollars.

Internet Research Agency was a structured organization headed by a management group and arranged into departments, including graphics, search engine optimization, information technology and finance departments.

In 2014, the company established a translator project focused on the United States. In July of 2016, more than 80 employees were assigned to the translator project. Two of the defendants allegedly traveled to the United States in 2014 to collect intelligence for their American influence operations.

In order to hide the Russian origins of their activities, the departments allegedly purchased space on computer servers located here in the United States in order to set up a virtual private network. The defendants allegedly used that infrastructure to establish hundreds of accounts on social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, making it appear that those accounts were controlled by persons located in the United States.

They used stolen or fictitious American identities, fraudulent bank accounts and false identification documents. The defendants posed as politically and socially active Americans, advocating for and against particular candidates. They established social media pages and groups to communicate with unwitting Americans. They also purchased political advertisements on social media networks.

The Russians also recruited and paid real Americans to engage in political activities, promote political campaigns and stage political rallies. The defendants and their co-conspirators pretended to be grassroots activists. According to the indictment, the Americans did not know that they were communicating with Russians.

After the election, the defendants allegedly staged rallies to support the president-elect, while simultaneously staging rallies to protest his election. For example, the defendants organized one rally to support the president-elect and another rally to oppose him, both in New York, on the same day.

On September 13th of 2017, soon after the news media reported that the special counsel's office was investigating evidence that Russian operatives had used social media to interfere with the 2016 election, one defendant allegedly wrote, quote, "We had a slight crisis here at work. The FBI busted our activity. So I got preoccupied with covering tracks together with my colleagues," end quote.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The indictment includes eight criminal counts. Count one alleges a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States by all of the defendants. The defendants allegedly conspired to defraud America by impairing the lawful functions of the Federal Election Commission, the United States Department of Justice and the Department of State.

Those organizations of the U.S. government are responsible for administering federal requirements for disclosure of foreign involvement in certain domestic activities.

Count two charges conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud by Internet Research Agency and two of the individual defendants. And counts three through eight charge aggravated identity theft by Internet Research Agency and four individuals.

Now, there is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity. There is no allegation in the indictment that the charged conduct altered the outcome of the 2016 election.

I want to caution you that everyone changed with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. At trial, prosecutors must introduce credible evidence that is sufficient to prove each defendant guilty beyond any reasonable doubt to a unanimous jury. The special counsel's investigation is ongoing. There will be no comments from the special counsel at this time.

This indictment serves as a reminder that people are not always who they appear to be on the internet. The indictment alleges that the Russian conspirators want to promote discord in the United States and undermine public confidence in democracy. We must not allow them to succeed.

The Department of Justice will continue to work cooperatively with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies and with the Congress to defend our nation against similar current and future efforts.

I want to thank the federal agents and prosecutors who are working on this case for their exceptional service, and I'll be happy to take a few questions.

The unintended consequence of it was that a lot more people are not given the treatment they needed. Along with a staggering increase in homelessness and the closer of inpatient facilities.

Actually, Mueller indicted the Russians only for violating 18 U.S.C. §371 (conspiracy to defraud the United States), §§ 1343 and 1344 (wire fraud and bank fraud), and §1082(A) (identity theft). He did not indict them for violating 52 U.S.C. §30121 (contributions and donations by foreign nationals). The question is, why not? Here, I think Barnes supplies the answer, although again I do not think his explanation is technically accurate.

This is the relevant language of 52 U.S.C. §30121, which covers “meddling” in U.S. elections by foreign nationals:

(a) Prohibition: It shall be unlawful for—

(1) a foreign national, directly or indirectly, to make—

(A) a contribution or donation of money or other thing of value, or to make an express or implied promise to make a contribution or donation, in connection with a Federal, State, or local election;

(B) a contribution or donation to a committee of a political party; or

(C) an expenditure, independent expenditure, or disbursement for an electioneering communication (within the meaning of section 30104(f)(3) of this title); or

(2) a person to solicit, accept, or receive a contribution or donation described in subparagraph (A) or (B) of paragraph (1) from a foreign national.

The Russians obviously violated this statute; they spent millions of dollars to promote the candidacies of Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump and Jill Stein, and to oppose the candidacies of Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. So why weren’t they charged with the most pertinent crime they committed? Because Christopher Steele arguably violated the same law. He is a foreign national, and he contributed a “thing of value” to the Hillary Clinton campaign, namely the fake dossier.

Note, too, Section (2): it is a crime to “solicit, accept, or receive” such a contribution from a foreign national. Isn’t that what the Perkins, Coie law firm, the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and probably Hillary herself, did?

[...]

I don’t doubt that election lawyers could come up with defenses for Christopher Steele, were he to be charged with violating §30121. But that is a can of worms that Mueller didn’t want to open. Too many people know the facts behind the Steele dossier, and if he had charged the Russians with meddling in the presidential election under §30121, he soon would have faced questions about why he didn’t indict Steele–and Glenn Simpson, Perkins, Coie, Clinton campaign officials, and perhaps Clinton–for the same offense.

It was in order to avoid that pitfall, I suspect, that Mueller overlooked the most relevant federal offense that the Russians committed, and instead charged them with a vague “conspiracy to defraud,” along with wire fraud, bank fraud and identity theft. The first charge is entirely discretionary on Mueller’s part, and Steele didn’t commit wire fraud, bank fraud or identity theft.

I think that is why Mueller chose not to indict the Russians for meddling in a U.S. presidential election.

Washington, D.C. – A new poll reveals that the majority of the American public believes the Obama administration’s national security apparatus “improperly surveilled” then-candidate Donald Trump’s campaign staff, according to the latest Investor’s Business Daily/TIPP poll.

The public survey showed that more than half of those surveyed would also like to see a second special prosecutor appointed to investigate potential impropriety on the part of the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI in relation to spying on the Trump team.

The poll suggests that some Americans don’t necessarily believe the Trump-Russia collusion narrative, and instead, perceive Obama’s law enforcement and intelligence bureaucracy as potentially complicit in engaging in political espionage.

The original sense of encapsulate, meaning "to enclose something in a capsule," first appeared in the late 19th century. Its extended meaning, "to give a summary or synopsis of something," plays on the notion of a capsule as something compact, self-contained, and often easily digestible (as in a capsule of medicine). There is also a verb "capsule," which is more or less synonymous with "encapsulate

Reading from a speech scribbled on the back of her AP Government notes, Gonzalez demanded to know where the “common sense” is in America’s gun laws, and called out members of Congress who’ve accepted money and donations from the National Rifle Association.

She also had a message specifically for President Donald Trump, criticizing him for tweeting a call for action on mental health, while adding that he overturned an Obama-era law that made it harder for people with mental illness to purchase a gun.

"If the president wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a 'terrible tragedy,'" she said, "I'm going to happily ask him how much money he received from the NRA."

In the crowd, students held up photos of their classmates who were killed, and at times responded to speeches with chants of "vote them out," and "Rubio must go."

Douglas High student Sarah Chadwick, whose reply to Trump's condolence tweet went viral, carried a sign that read "we don't want your thoughts and condolences, we want policy & change."

What Students Said About Guns After 14 of Their Classmates Were Killed

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — They shouted into a microphone until their voices became hoarse. They waved handmade signs. They chanted.

And sometimes, in the middle of it all, they choked up.

At the federal courthouse here on Saturday, students — including many of the very people who had to endure the trauma of a shooting on campus — continued to speak out about guns.

Since Wednesday, when a gunman killed 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., their youthful voices have resonated where those of longtime politicians have largely fallen flat.

And on Saturday, another young woman’s words captivated the nation.

Speaking publicly at the rally, Emma González, a senior, pledged that her school would be the site of the nation’s last mass shooting. How could she know? Because, she said, she and her peers would take it upon themselves to “change the law.”

“The people in the government who are voted into power are lying to us,” she said. “And us kids seem to be the only ones who notice and are prepared to call B.S.

“They say that tougher gun laws do not decrease gun violence — we call B.S.!” she continued as a chorus of supporters echoed her. “They say a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun — we call B.S.! They say guns are just tools like knives and are as dangerous as cars — we call B.S.! They say that no laws could have been able to prevent the hundreds of senseless tragedies that have occurred — we call B.S.! That us kids don’t know what we’re talking about, that we’re too young to understand how the government works — we call B.S.!”

She wiped her eyes aggressively. Then, she urged the people in the crowd to register to vote — and to give their elected officials “a piece of your mind.”

Just hours later, one video of the speech had been viewed more than 100,000 times.

In a telephone interview early Sunday, Ms. González, 18, said she was surprised by the enthusiastic reaction to her speech.

“I just got off the phone with Demi Lovato,” she said. “That’s not normally something that ever should have happened.”

Ms. González said she was encouraged to speak out, in part, by other supportive people in her community, especially those who she said do not yet feel comfortable talking publicly.

“This is my whole world now,” she said. “I cannot allow myself to stop talking about this.”

A person Ms. González met at a party was killed in the shooting, she said; another person she has known for “an incredibly long time” is still in the hospital.

“Everybody needs to understand how we feel and what we went through, because if they don’t, they’re not going to be able to understand why we’re fighting for what we’re fighting for,” Ms. González said.

She noted that some have criticized students for raising their voices, suggesting that they take the time to grieve instead.

“This is the way I have to grieve,” Ms. González said. “I have to make sure that everybody knows that this isn’t something that is allowed to happen.”

James said...

Here are the voices of some other students who, like Ms. González, have spoken out in recent days.

David Hogg, 17: ‘We’re children. You guys are the adults’

While David Hogg, 17, and dozens of his Stoneman Douglas classmates were hiding in the dark in the school chef’s office, he interviewed them on camera about their views on gun policy. Mr. Hogg, a senior and the student news director, later told The New York Times that lawmakers must make schools safer.
“We need to do something,” he said. “We need to get out there and be politically active. Congress needs to get over their political bias with each other and work toward saving children’s lives.”

Referring to politicians, Mr. Hogg told CNN: “We’re children. You guys are the adults.”

Carly Novell, 17: ‘This IS about guns’

Hours after the mass shooting, surviving students turned to social media to discuss gun control. They addressed the prevalence of such attacks and why someone with a mental illness can buy a gun.

“Guns give these disgusting people the ability to kill other human beings,” Carly Novell, a 17-year-old senior who is an editor for the school’s quarterly magazine, wrote on Twitter. “This IS about guns.”

In a video interview with The Times, Ms. Novell said she was trying to use her anger fruitfully.

“People always talk about gun control and how things need to change, but nothing ever does,” she said. “And that is so frustrating.”

Tyra Hemans, 19: ‘I want to talk with’ Trump

The public outcry from some Stoneman Douglas students was vastly different from the response of survivors of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Those students two decades ago did not turn to activism as they grieved.

In contrast, Tyra Hemans, a senior at Stoneman Douglas, brought a poster featuring the word “ENOUGH” to a funeral for one of her classmates on Friday. She said she also wanted to deliver a message to President Trump.

“I want our politicians to stop thinking about money and start thinking about all these lives we had lost,” she said. “I want to talk with him about changing these laws.”

Daniela Palacios, 16: ‘Change is going to come of this’

Among those who attended Saturday’s rally was Daniela Palacios, 16, a sophomore at another Broward County high school, Cypress Bay.

This was her first protest, she said, and she stood with her mother, a tiny gold cross on a chain around her neck.
Returning to school after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas had been difficult, she explained, and she said she was there to call for a ban on firearms like the semiautomatic AR-15 rifle used by the gunman.

“Wherever you bump into someone, there is the fear that they’re the next shooter,” she said, “and every bell is a gunshot.”

“I feel like some change is going to come of this,” she went on, her voice barely audible amid the roar of the crowd. “I feel hopeful.”

Ellie Branson, 16: ‘Can you include the names of the victims?’

When the protest ended, a group of teenagers stayed behind, chanting and hugging — and chanting again.
“It could have been us,” one sign read. “My friend died for what?” said another.

“No more guns! No more guns! No more guns!” they yelled.

Among those leading the group was Ellie Branson, 16, a junior from South Broward High School. She wore a yellow and white T-shirt, her cheeks wet with tears.

When the protest finally ended, she texted a reporter.
“Can you include the names of the victims?” she asked. “Their names are more important than mine.”

"There are only 7 privately owned guns for every 100 Israelis; the rate in America is 89."

James said...

The only problem is that Israel actually has quite strong gun restrictions and very low gun ownership rates, some of the lowest in the developed world. This confusion has gotten so bad that even Israeli government officials are now chiming in to knock back the claims, though the NRA is seen as a close ally of the U.S. Republican party, which positions itself as strongly backing Israel.

LaPierre appeared to take his Israel-model advocacy a step too far when he declared on Meet the Press this weekend, "Israel had a whole lot of school shootings, until they did one thing. They said we’re going to stop it and they put armed security in every school and they have not had a problem since then."

A spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry told the New York Daily News that this was simply wrong. "We didn’t have a series of school shootings, and they had nothing to do with the issue at hand in the United States. We had to deal with terrorism," he said. "What removed the danger was not the armed guards but an overall anti-terror policy and anti-terror operations which brought street terrorism down to nearly zero over a number of years.” The spokesperson added, “It would be better not to drag Israel into what is an internal American discussion."

Israeli guns laws, it turns out, are much stricter than America's gun laws. This may help explain why Israeli gun ownership is just one thirteenth of what it is in the U.S. To bring that number into focus, it would likely be even lower if not for mandatory military service, which means Israelis are more likely to be familiar with guns. Israel's unique security challenges and its periodic bouts with terrorism would also seem to bolster an NRA-style case for allowing more privately owned guns so that more citizens can defend themselves. And yet, there are far fewer guns in private citizens' hands, and far less gun crime.

So why does Israel look more like gun-controlling Britain than gun-loving American? Why are Israel and the U.S. near opposite extremes among Western nations when it comes to gun laws? As American scholar Janet Rosenbaum put it in an article for ForeignPolicy.com, "Israel has well-known security concerns, but it limits security to the professionals." Whereas Americans laws privilege free access to guns and then restrict them from there, Israeli laws, Rosenbaum writes, "are designed to keep amateurs from carrying guns in the street -- even amateurs who have served 3 years in the army.
Israel limits gun ownership to security workers, people who transport valuables or explosives, residents of the West Bank, and hunters. People who don't fall into one of those categories cannot obtain a firearm permit.
Moreover, Israel rejects 40 percent of firearm permit applicants, the highest rejection rate in the Western world. Both Switzerland and Israel require yearly (or more frequent) permit renewals to insure that the reasons are still applicable.

The hope for a U.S. political consensus on gun control may already be fading, the Post's Tom Hamburger recently reported. So, if nothing else, maybe the post-Sandy Hook gun debate would be an opportunity to clear up the long-held misunderstanding of Israeli gun laws. For example, as Rosenbaum told Ezra Klein in a phone interview, there's a misconception that Israel promotes security through gun ownership. "Ten years ago, when Israel had the outbreak of violence, there was an expansion of gun ownership, but only to people above a certain rank in the military," she said. "There was no sense that having ordinary citizens [carry guns] would make anything safer." That's the Israeli thinking, anyway. That doesn't necessarily mean it's right or wrong for the U.S., but if we're going to debate national models, it's worth at least getting them right.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Wednesday approved a number of measures to ease the requirements for firearm permits, as Israel copes with a wave of “lone wolf” terrorism.

“In recent weeks many citizens have helped the Israel Police subdue terrorists who carried out attacks,” he said.

Citizens with firearms training are a multiplying force for the police in their fight against terrorism and therefore I will take measures to ease the restrictions at this time.”

The measures are to allow local authorities in “high priority” areas to give approval to carry weapons in certain instances, as opposed to previously when only the firearms licensing branch of the Public Security Ministry could do so.
