Not sure why it was a big deal...

But yesterday there were some primaries in Texas, and apparently the Democrats were left feeling a bit underwhelmed?  Apparently some were surprised (and disappointed) that there is a strong indication that Trump is popular in Texas and that candidates who were more supportive of the President did better than those who showed much opposition. Apparently there was some disappointment that the final voting numbers showed about 3 Republicans to 2 Democrats. Apparently there was also disappointment that some well funded and DNC backed candidate did not perform up to expectations?

What we are seeing, so far in off year elections, is that the sort of Democrat that is winning is not the hard core anti-Trump far left liberal Democrat... but rather it's the sort of conservative Democrat who is willing to campaign without offending the conservatives that they need to win. If Donald Trump did nothing else but move the Democratic Party in a conservative direction... it would be a net win.

Democratic voter turnout nearly doubled in the primaries from 2014.

Democratic voters outnumbered Republican voters in the 15 largest counties.

Republicans still had more primary voters statewide however.

It wasn't a big deal.it was just a primary!!!! But the right wing talking heads sure paid a lot of attention to it!!!! Probably got their attention also since it sure could show a few deep red state congressional seats can be very competitive this year....Another couple blue reps and dear donnie could be in some deep yogurt.....

The Democrats were expecting that they may put a scare into Ted Cruz. Cruz got more votes than the entire Democratic field put together. Suddenly, Cruz doesn't sound quite as concerned as he did a few days ago.

More Republican primary voters than Democrats means that Republicans are still favored in state-wide elections in Texas. I'm sure that Cruz is concerned about the surge in the Democratic numbers, but he wasn't running scared. He uses it to scare his base, "The Democrats will crawl over broken glass to vote".

I don't know if the enthusiasm that Cruz stirred up can transfer to the general election. Probably he can. But I'm pretty sure that if the Democratic Party elite continue to try to call the shots in Texas, it will backfire on them. Personally, I wouldn't bank on Texas being much of an opportunity for Democratic gains in Congress.
