Another argument of semantics...

So I tend to believe that when you start arguing semantics, it's because you lost the actual argument on merit. That is what appears to be happening in the latest war of the words between the President and media (led by the NY Times).

  • The issue started when the NY Times reported that a Senior White House official had stated that reengaging the June 12th summit at this time would be impossible.
  • The President shot back with the tweet (provided in the previous post) that the meeting could still take place and that such a White House official doesn't exist.
  • So some others in the media raced to the NY Time defense, by suggesting that the White House official "did" exist, stating that the official in question was Matt Pottinger from the National Security Counsel, Eventually there was audio provided that sure enough had an official named Matt Pottinger who discussed the on again off again summit with the media (including the NY Times reporter in question).
  • Gotcha!!! Right!!!
  • Well almost. The reality is that if you actually listen through the whole audio, Pottinger doesn't actually claim that the June 12th date was impossible. According to the audio he suggested that there was not a lot of time, that valuable time had been lost, and that the ball was in North Korea's court.
  • More to the point, if the June 12th date was impossible, the White House would not have sent a team to Singapore to start making the arrangements if the summit officially is back on.

So, the reality is that the NY Times provided a quote from an unnamed source that didn't exist. Now we can quibble about whether it was the "quote"  or the "official" that didn't exist, but the truth is that without a quote that backs up the NY Times story, then there cannot possibly be an official that provided the quote (can there be?). Obviously providing the actual quote would have made for a much different story (or possibly no story at all). If that was the case, then the President would not have questioned the story.

Bottom line: the media is providing a semantic argument as an attempt to cover up the fact that the Times provided "fake news". The problem is that I am not 100% sure that they even realize that they are doing so. It makes you wonder how often they simply provide a "quote" that never actually was made to an unnamed source who said something close enough to being similar that they can justify the story they wanted to write?

Semantics aside. Trump lied.

n a tweet, the president took issue with that sentence, saying, “WRONG AGAIN! Use real people, not phony sources.”

It is not clear whether the president was simply unaware of the actions of his own senior staff or if he knowingly ignored the truth. The source of that sentence was a White House official who held a briefing on Thursday afternoon in the White House briefing room that was attended by about 50 reporters, with about 200 or so more on a conference call.

Reporters often request such briefings to be on the record, which would allow the official to be named. But, in this case, the rules of the briefing imposed by the White House required that the official be referred to only as a “senior White House official.” The Times is continuing to abide by that agreement.

The Times was been right all along.

Trump slaps 'phony' label on aide's comments
in White House-arranged call

President Donald Trump slammed the New York Times Saturday for using “phony sources” in a story citing a White House official – but the comments the paper referred to came from a formal background briefing attended by multiple news organizations and widely reported.

Trump appeared to be responding to a Times story about his on-again, off-again plans for a June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

TRUMP:
“The Failing @nytimes quotes ‘a senior White House official,’ who doesn’t exist, as saying ‘even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed,’“ the president wrote on Twitter.

The Times cited a White House official in a story about Trump’s reversal on the summit following his abrupt decision to withdraw from the historic sit-down in a letter sent Thursday.

The paper reported that the official said holding the meeting on the originally scheduled date would be “impossible,” though in fact the official didn’t use the word during the background briefing, held on Thursday afternoon at the White House and organized by the press office.

TRANSCRIPT:
“There’s a certain amount of actual dialogue that needs to take place at the working level with your counterparts to ensure that the agenda is clear in the minds of those two leaders when they sit down to actually meet and talk and negotiate, and hopefully make a deal. And June 12 is in 10 minutes, and it's going to be – you know,” the official said, according to a White House transcript. “But the President has said that he has – someday, that he looks forward to meeting with Kim.”

POLITICO was among the news organizations that participated in the call and reported the official’s comments at the time.

Reporters were quick to call the president out following his tweet.

“I mean, every reporter on the call knows who this official was, and this official exists,” Mike Warren, a senior writer for the conservative Weekly Standard wrote on Twitter. “And we all heard the official say it.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Saturday the White House pre-advance team is heading to Singapore as scheduled to move ahead with logistics. Trump has indicated he’s open to holding the June 12 summit, and Kim met Saturday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to get the meeting back on track.

Trump has repeatedly fumed at the unnamed White House sources in stories about his administration and the leaks that are spread through many of their quotes. POLITICO reported the president demanded and White House chief of staff John Kelly signed off on a plan to that would dismiss junior aides in the communications shop, who have been blamed for the leaks.

“WRONG AGAIN! Use real people,” Trump concluded on Saturday. “not phony sources.”

Sure sounds like the real official, whose words are transcribed here, was saying there was not enough time -- only, so to speak, ten minutes.

"Someday" [not June 12] "he looks forward to meeting with Kim."

NobodyI know takes the President at his word. Every time there is a question I simply look at the facts. Somethings he is right. Many times he is wrong.

On the flip side, rather than read this guys quote yourself (it's available all over the internet) - you simply...

Wait for it...

CUT AND FUCKING PASTE FROM POLITICO AND THE NY TIMES!!!

The facts are simple. The person in question did not say that the June 12 meeting was impossible as the NY Times stated.

Now the NY Times might have "taken that" from what he said, but that is not what he said, and "that" interpretation of his meaning is not the general consensus.

So the question here Roger...

Can you claim to quote someone when you are using some sort of "interpretation" of what you believe was "implied"??

Isn't a quote supposed to be what that person "actually said"?

Why didn't the Time quote what this guy actually said if they were going to use him as their "high ranking official"?

Why?

Why?

Why?

The fact that you are not curious as to why the Times decided to use their own interpretation of what someone said as a "quote"? Doesn't it make you wonder how often their "anonymous quotes" are not really quotes, but rather a variation of the quote that fits the framework of the story they are trying to write?

This is why the MSM has so little credibility these days.

I believe that Politico, NY Times, and Washington Post are aligned on their positions, just as Fox News, WSJ, and others are aligned on their positions.

If you don't believe that partisanship plays a part in this (on both sides) then I seriously cannot help you (nobody can).

But unlike you, I don't simply toss away everything that the liberal media tosses out there, because many times they are right, just as many times the conservative media is right.

I look at the facts. If you looked at the facts, then you wouldn't be CUTTING AND PASTING LIKE AN IDIOT. Because, quite frankly Roger, if all you can do is CUT AND PASTE then you are every bit as stupid as many people her claim.

In this particular case, Rog... the facts simply do not bear out that there was anyone in the Trump administration that stated the June 12th summit would be "impossible" as the Times stated.

Period. End of story.

What you are doing Roger is "parroting" the argument that the Times was quoting an actual source.... when in fact, the person they claim made the statement never did.

So again, either they are talking about a "different source" or they blatantly lied about what this source stated.

This whole thing just reinforces my belief that we should never, ever, under any circumstance ever believe any story that the media tosses out there based on an "anonymous source" because they cannot be trusted to accurately report what that "source" is telling them.

C.H. Truth said...

Actually Roger, the President has nothing to do with this.

People (such as myself) have been critical of the media long before Trump has been President. The fact that someone in his position is willing to fight back and call them out on things has escalated the general feeling regarding the dishonestly of the media. But this has been going on for a very long time, the President is just a recent inclusion into the fight.

Your problem is that things are personal for you. If the President says something, you knee jerk believe it to be false, or at least you allow yourself to discount whatever it is that is said because it's Trump.

Same holds true for you when you read something in FOX, WSJ, or Brietbart. You simply allow yourself to discount as wrong, or you will go read Eugene Robinson, or Paul Krugman to justify your self. If anyone on the left side of the media tells you there is something wrong you believe.

Me... I research the facts on my own.

For me, nothing is "personal". I have neither a great admiration or a great hatred for the President. I believe he does some things very well, but I believe he does other things very poorly. I certainly believe he has the potential to be one of the most substantial Presidents of our lifetime. If people (like yourself) were willing to cut him an ounce of slack, you might see that he really does want to improve things, even if you don't agree with some of those changes are improvements. He's just a guy trying to do what he thinks is right, or more importantly, he wants to do what the people who elected him asked him to do.

The NYT interpreted this as the source saying the June 12 date would be impossible, BUT the NYT did NOT put the word impossible in quotes, as even Trump correctly demonstrated.

Thus, the NYT did not say the source said it would be "impossible."

The source said that June 12 would be too soon, like saying "in ten minutes." But, the source indicated that the President could hope that the summit would take place later -- "someday."

And those were actual quotes.

Grow up.

And contrary to what Trump said, the source was a real person: Matthew Pottinger, the NSC Senior Director for Asian Affairs.

Lesli Stahl's interview on 60 Minutes as President elect.

Stahl was the first television journalist to sit down with Mr. Trump for an interview following his election victory. Their wide-ranging on-camera interview did not delve into Mr. Trump's attitude toward the press, but Stahl said on Monday night that in a candid, off-camera meeting earlier that year, she pressed him to explain his barrage of insults aimed at journalists, and he gave her a clear explanation:

"I said, 'You know, that is getting tired. Why are you doing this? You're doing it over and over. It's boring and it's time to end that,'" Stahl said on stage alongside "PBS Newshour anchor Judy.

Obviously the President is lying again.

President Donald Trump is blaming Democrats for his administration's controversial new policy of taking children away from parents caught unlawfully crossing into the United States with them on the southern border, a practice the White House says is a deterrent to illegal immigration.

The president's criticism of the "horrible" policy comes less than a month after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" approach to illegal border crossings. "If you are smuggling a child then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law," he warned.

Democrats are having all sorts of issues with "semantics"
Pollster to Dem Candidates: Focus on Mueller Indictments
A new survey by Navigator Research, a group of top Democratic strategists and public opinion experts, finds that while 97 percent of Americans have heard about the Mueller probe, nearly 60 percent don't believe it has uncovered any crimes.

The ongoing investigation has so far resulted in two dozen indictments, including that of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, and a couple of campaign associates have pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators. But the findings of the Navigator survey indicate that while most Americans say the investigation should continue, they don't think it has produced much so far.
"There is a real information and education challenge for progressives to make sure more people learn that there is a 'there' there," says Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson. "Does it mean it's going to be the focus of an entire ad campaign? Probably not. But there are real arguments that are impactful to voters and ways we can win this argument if we engage."

There are two reality problems with this approach.

Lynn Bernard Amick was born to Charles E. and Jennie B. (Williams) Amick on October 17, 1910, in his parents’ sod house west of Springview, NE. He had two brothers: Ivan B. Amick, who is now deceased, and Carroll E. Amick, who currently lives in Rapid City. He also had one sister, Rita E. (Amick) Stroschine, who lives in Winner, SD. In 1913, Lynn’s family moved 10 miles south of Colome, SD. Lynn went to Kansas Flats Country School for grades 1-8. During the drought and dust storms of the early 1930’s, Lynn decided to truck his horses and wagon to Hartley, Iowa. Here he was employed by farmers. He later became a mechanic in Ocheyedan, IA. He married Blanche E. Petersen, on January 24, 1939, in Spencer, Iowa. They had one child together, Lynne Dee (Amick) Havens, who was 3 years old at the time of her father’s death. His sister, Rita, remembers Lynn as a kind and loving person who cared very much for his wife and daughter and all of his family.

On November 11, 1943, Lynn was drafted into the Army, training at Camp Fannin in Texas. He was part of Company E, 409th Infantry. He was shipped overseas from New York, October 1, 1944, to somewhere in France. His last letter was written to his parents on November 15, the day before he died. He told of dealing with rain and snow, living in tents with candles for light, sleeping in clothes except boots and leggings, and drying socks for the next day.

On November 16, 1944, in Southern France, Army Private Lynn B. Amick was killed in battle. We do not know where Private Amick was originally buried, but we do know that his body was moved to the U.S. Military Cemetery in Epinal, France. Current survivors of his family are Lynne Dee Havens, daughter, Glenwood Springs, CO; Carroll E. Amick, brother; and Rita Stroschine, sister.

Jeanne Pochop and Gaye Hambek, nieces of Private Amick, traveled to Europe where they spent a month in September of 1995. At the time, Pvt. Amick’s great niece, Pam (Hambek) Anderson and her family were living in Germany where her husband was stationed. Private Amick’s family had always wanted to visit his final resting place. Although his immediate family was not able to fulfill this dream, 51 years later, his nieces had the opportunity to travel to his gravesite. They placed a red rose on his cross as requested by his sister, Rita. Later Hambek wrote a speech about Private Amick and their trip to Epinal, France, to see his place of burial. An excerpt from her speech reads:

As we parked, we looked out over the 5255 white marble crosses so exactly spaced on a carpet of green, that no matter which way you viewed they were standing at attention in a straight line. The grounds were immaculately groomed and maintained. We were all in absolute awe, and none of us were able to speak at first as we were overcome with emotion.

It’s hard to explain our feelings as we each looked upon this white marble cross bearing the name of our family’s dear loved one – now so long ago taken from us. I felt that I could almost see his face -- in a transparent kind of way -- and I felt that he was at peace in this beautiful setting surrounded by all the others -- so far away from home also. Our loss was so long ago, but we had successfully gapped those 50 some odd years, and were now able to return home having accomplished our number 1 goal. Such wonderful peace and tranquility reigns here – and we left knowing that our loved ones are exceptionally well cared for.

His friends, family, and his country respected Private Lynn Bernard Amick, and the men in his Company looked up to him. I also respect Private Lynn B. Amick for fighting for our country and the freedom of others.

Rudy Giuliani Admits White House Is Trying To Discredit Russia Investigation
HuffPost Igor Bobic,HuffPost 17 hours ago

President Donald Trump’s lawyer flatly admitted that the White House is waging a fierce information campaign against special counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The aim: to delegitimize the probe in the eyes of voters and lawmakers in Congress.

Rudy Giuliani, asked about the near-daily attacks on the probe, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, “They are giving us the material. I couldn’t do it if I didn’t have the material. ... It is for public opinion.”

“Because eventually, the decision here is going to be: impeach, [or] not impeach,” he continued. “Members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, are going to be informed a lot by their constituents. So our jury ... is the American people. And the American people ... Republicans largely, independents pretty substantially, and even Democrats now question the legitimacy of it.”

Why Trump was elected and why nobody outside the Washington liberal media establishment misses Obama.

‘Kick Me’ No More

But there is another, less analyzed element to the disruptive persona, and it is the very antithesis of what so excited the American Left about Barack Obama and his administration.

Recall a lifetime ago (actually it was 2008), when a certified dove won the presidency in a landslide. One of his first official acts was to undertake a trip to a number of Muslim countries, wherein apologies were offered for America’s “imperialist” past. Assurances were also made: The cowboy Bush and his warmongering neocons were gone. Mr. Obama would now inform the world that America had learned its lesson. The U.S. would no longer manifest its arrogance on the world stage. We would henceforth strive to have the world like us — especially our charismatic but unthreatening young president, who was counterintuitive himself, seeming to act on the premise that if the United States was ostentatiously embarrassed about its dominance and power, we would be better liked. And we were better liked, but much more endangered and much less intimidating.

American withdrawal from world hot spots followed. Where we did show up, we made sure to provide the enemy with the date and time of our engagement. Where we did take action, only tentative commitment followed. Who can forget Secretary of State John Kerry promising a “unbelievably small, limited kind of [bombing] effect” against Bashar al Assad’s murderous regime, or a famously failed “red line” in that same country; or the description of deserter Bowe Bergdahl as having served with “honor and distinction”; or freezing defensive missiles in Poland to placate Vladimir Putin; or our feckless response to Russian aggression in Ukraine and Crimea; or the specter of funding the Iranian ballistic-missile program and the mullahs’ terror activities throughout the Middle East?

Alas, too many voters within flyover America saw all this as a step too far — too much weakness — too many vacuums — too many “kick me” signs displayed for consumption by America’s bullies. With apologies to Austin Powers, American had lost, indeed given away, its “mojo.”

And then one day the unlikeliest of political leaders appeared. Many voters (including some who ended up voting for him) saw Mr. Trump as unprepared to tackle the world’s most intractable problems. Another subset of supporters maintained serious concerns about “policy by tweet” and the man’s propensity to engage in sideshow fights with antagonistic politicians, reporters, and celebrities.

But there was one aspect to the Trump phenomena that all of his supporters firmly believed: that the “kick me” sign that had hung around America’s neck for eight years would be gone. Good riddance.

A few examples of trump bullshitting the country and you all accept...

Pants on Fire: "I watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering" as the World Trade Center collapsed.

If thousands of people were celebrating the attacks on American soil, many people besides Trump would remember it. And in the 21st century, there would be video or visual evidence. Even as recently as this month, Trump has continued to say he’s right, pushing evidence that does not actually support his claim.

False: "I was totally against the war in Iraq, saying for many years that it would destabilize the Middle East."

If Trump saw regional destabilization on the horizon, he kept it under wraps. The record shows at best some early reservations that evolved into opposition about a year after the war began. When radio host Howard Stern asked Trump if he supported the invasion about six months before the war began Trump said, "Yeah, I guess so."

False: There is "no system to vet" refugees from the Middle East.

There are concerns about information gaps, but a system does exist and has existed since 1980. It involves multiple federal intelligence and security agencies, as well as the United Nations. Refugee vetting typically takes one to two years and includes numerous rounds of security checks.

Pants on Fire: The unemployment rate may be as high as "42 percent."

Getting a percentage that high requires believing that being a full-time student, a senior citizen, a stay-at-home parent, a job-training participant, or having a disability is no excuse for not holding down a full-time job. The highest alternative unemployment-rate measure we could come up with that had any credibility was 16.4 percent.

False: "We're the highest taxed nation in the world."

We fact-checked this claim three times, and it’s still wrong. Data from 2014, the most recent year available, shows that the United States wasn’t the most highly taxed by the typical metrics and actually places near the bottom or around the middle of the pack.

Trump Reignites Uproar on Immigration

“President Trump’s attempt to blame Democrats for separating migrant families at the border is renewing a political uproar over immigration, an issue that has challenged Trump throughout his presidency and threatens to grow more heated as he imposes more restrictions to stem the flow of illegal immigration,” the Washington Post reports.

“In one of several misleading tweets during the holiday weekend, Trump pushed Democrats to change a ‘horrible law’ that the president said mandated separating children from parents who enter the country illegally. But there is no law specifically requiring the government to take such action, and it’s also the policies of his own administration that have caused the family separation that advocacy groups and Democrats say is a crisis.”
