Trump and Kim save the world!!!

  1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
  2. The United States and DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
  3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
  4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
So, not exactly a tangible hard core agreement that anyone can sink their fangs into, but who can say it's not progress? We have at the very least established some communications, and have gotten some U.S. Citizens out of North Korean prison (and will likely get more). Both leaders are implying that there could be a more tangible agreement to come. We'll see. But no, it's not going to save the world. But perhaps things are a bit less chaotic because of this meeting.

Why did the Lost years prez. Not get this done?

these things are tough to accomplish when done from a position of weakness like leading from behind, bowing and apologizing every fucking day.

after 8 years of 'america last' we're 500 days into 'america first.'

and it's still taking a little getting used to.

What he's apparently deciding to cease the joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. They are " too expensive ".

If President Hillary Rodham Clinton had declared the military exercises were no longer necessary for the agreement that the North Koreans would shut down one of their nuclear weapons facilities the impeachment hearings would be scheduled for this morning.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the U.S. has agreed to stop running military exercises in neighboring South Korea as part of its agreement with North Korea, which in turn pledged to destroy a major missile engine testing site.

Trump made his remarks several hours after Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a ceremony to sign a joint statement in which Kim vowed to give up his nuclear program in exchange for security guarantees from the United States. But the one-page document contained few specifics on how that goal would be achieved.

At a press conference shortly after the document was signed, Trump offered up a few of those details. He said that the U.S. would put an end to what he called "war games," a term for the joint exercises preferred by the Pyongyang regime, which characterizes them as rehearsals for invasion.

Trump also expressed a desire to eventually remove the thousands of American stationed on the Korean peninsula, another point of contention for North Korea.

"I want to get our soldiers out," he said, but noted "that’s not part of the equation right now."

The remarks quickly incensed some military experts and foreign policy hawks who worried Trump was promoting Pyongyang talking points and moving too quickly to give up what they perceive as stabilizing forces in the region.

But Trump argued that the joint military exercises with South Korea were "very provocative" and cost "a tremendous amount of money," complaining that Seoul doesn't foot enough of the bill. And he mentioned that the exercises require U.S. bombers to fly in six-and-a-half hours from Guam, where they are stationed.

well, according to the fuckwit left, this situation was designed to accomplish two things:

1) trump gets a contract to build a trump hotel and resort in pyongyang

2) it serves as a distraction to the 'russia, russia, russia' thingy.

C.H. Truth said...

Funny how that all gets turned around.

Trump explained that if North Korea wasn't such a red headed step child, that they could probably develop hotels and condos and gain a tourist market along their beaches. Something that cannot be done when you don't allow anyone into your country, and your own population is too poor to vacation at the beach.

And everyone suggests that Trump is doing personal business?

C.H. Truth said...

I think at this point, the Mueller investigation is nothing more than a designed distraction from all of the tangible things that are actually changing in the country.

Rather than concentrate on the day to day business, and debate whether or not Trump has been a good President or not... the left would rather talk conspiracy theories, and how another Ukrainian with ties to Manafort has been indicted (but will never face trial).

This took everyone by surprise. If Obama or Clinton had agreed with North Korea on this you and Fox News would be exploding and demanding #impeachment.

Trump also expressed a desire to eventually remove the thousands of American service members stationed on the Korean peninsula, another point of contention for North Korea.

Pulling out our forces will leave China as the preeminent military power in eastern Asia.

Donald Trump’s Foreign Policy Distilled To Just Three Words…But Maybe We Only Need Three

A lot of time and energy are being spent by the left trying to frame both the G7 meeting yesterday and Trump’s summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un as failures.

streiff
This is to be expected. The media spent eight long years trying to convince us that Obama was a foreign policy savant. They did this because a) the media aren’t terribly bright themselves and b) they confuse glib with smart so they frequently think other glib but not terribly bright people are really, really smart. I would contend that by any measure you choose, that America entered 2017 in a much weaker position than it had been in 2009.

Part of the criticism of Trump’s actions on the international stage stem from the fact that he has never sat down with Tom Friedman or some other really, really smart person and laid out the Trump doctrine for them and convinced them that the Trump Doctrine works. The Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg, once an indefatigable fluffer for the Obama administration and now an equally indefatigable critic of Trump (see my last paragraph for why that is), takes it upon himself to define Trump’s foreign policy. He actually does a pretty good job of it but is unable to get past his own snark to see how it is playing out in the real world.

Joint Statement of President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea at the Singapore Summit

President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of new U.S.-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un state the following.

1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.

2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Having acknowledged that the U.S.-DPRK summit — the first in history — was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the U.S.-DPRK summit.

President Donald J. Trump of the United States and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new U.S.-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.

"An interview President Trump did in 1999 about North Korea's nuclear program has resurfaced amid the Trump administration's heightened tensions with Pyongyang.

The interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" features Trump before his entry into political campaigning speaking with host Tim Russert. Trump at the time argued that the United States must stop North Korea sooner rather than later.

"First, I negotiate. I would negotiate like crazy. And I'd make sure that we tried to get the best deal possible," Trump told Russert.

"Now, if that negotiation doesn't work, you better solve the problem now than solve it later, Tim. And you know it. And every politician knows it. And nobody wants to talk about it," Trump said."

Trump Basically Got Nothing from North Korea

“On paper, there is nothing President Trump extracted from North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, in their summit meeting that Mr. Kim’s father and grandfather had not already given to past American presidents,” the New York Times reports.

“In fact, he got less, at least for now. But as Mr. Trump made clear in a lengthy but vaguely worded reconstruction of their five hours of talks, none of that really matters to him.

“Instead, he is betting everything on the ‘terrific relationship’ and ‘very special bond’ that he said he developed with the 34-year-old dictator, and Mr. Trump’s seeming certainty that they now view the future elimination of North Korea’s arsenal of atomic weapons the same way.”

Kellyanne Conway’s Husband Defends Mueller

Lawyer George Conway, who is married to White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, defends in Lawfare the constitutionality of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

“It isn’t very surprising to see the president tweet a meritless legal position, because, as a non-lawyer, he wouldn’t know the difference between a good one and a bad one. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with lawyers making inventive and novel arguments on behalf of their clients… But the ‘constitutional’ arguments made against the special counsel do not meet that standard and had little more rigor than the tweet that promoted them.”

Pentagon Was Not Aware of Trump’s Concession Either

“President Trump’s pledge to cancel military exercises on the Korean Peninsula surprised not only allies in South Korea but also the Pentagon,” the New York Times reports.

“Hours after Mr. Trump’s announcement in Singapore, American troops in Seoul said they are still moving ahead with a military exercise this fall — Ulchi Freedom Guardian — until they receive guidance otherwise from the chain of command.

“In Washington, officials at the Pentagon, State Department and White House were scrambling to figure out exactly the impact of Mr. Trump’s comments.”

— President Trump, quoted by the New York Times, on his agreements with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump Was Outfoxed in Singapore

Nicholas Kristof: “Trump made a huge concession — the suspension of military exercises with South Korea. That’s on top of the broader concession of the summit meeting itself, security guarantees he gave North Korea and the legitimacy that the summit provides his counterpart, Kim Jong-un.

“Within North Korea, the ‘very special bond’ that Trump claimed to have formed with Kim will be portrayed this way: Kim forced the American president, through his nuclear and missile tests, to accept North Korea as a nuclear equal, to provide security guarantees to North Korea, and to cancel war games with South Korea that the North has protested for decades.

“In exchange for these concessions, Trump seems to have won astonishingly little.”

President Bill Clinton took the podium on October 18, 1994, with a speech that reads like a sigh of relief—the announcement of a landmark nuclear agreement between the United States and North Korea. “This agreement is good for the United States, good for our allies, and good for the safety of the entire world,” he assured the nation. Called the Agreed Framework, it was designed to put the brakes on North Korea’s nuclear program, and it promised to put an end to years of increasing nuclear tension, including a near war, to a halt."

Yeah, that's it loser....It seems it was an accord that was broken by the north....no surprise there....

arrange more than $4 billion in energy aid to North Korea during the next decade in return for a commitment from the country's hard-line Communist leadership to freeze and gradually dismantle its nuclear weapons development program.

"This agreement will help achieve a longstanding and vital American objective -- an end to the threat of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula," Mr. Clinton said this afternoon, after his top foreign policy advisers described the details of an enormously complex agreement struck with North Korea late Monday.

American and North Korean officials plan to sign the broad accord on Friday, and almost immediately the United States will begin a remarkable new foreign aid program: it will provide for the North, with which it has never signed a peace treaty ending the Korean War, supplies of heavy oil to keep factories running and homes heated.

The Pentagon had expressed concern that some of the fuel could be diverted to the North's million-man army, but officials said they were working to assure supplies that would be incompatible with its tanks and other military equipment.

"This agreement is good for the United States, good for our allies, and good for the safety of the entire world," Mr. Clinton said in a brief appearance in the White House press room this afternoon. "It's a crucial step toward drawing North Korea into the global community."

The Small Business Optimism Index increased in May to the second highest level in the NFIB survey’s 45-year history. The index rose to 107.8, a three-point gain, with small businesses reporting high numbers in several key areas including compensation, profits, and sales trends.

“Main Street optimism is on a stratospheric trajectory thanks to recent tax cuts and regulatory changes. For years, owners have continuously signaled that when taxes and regulations ease, earnings and employee compensation increase,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan.

The May report hit several records:

• Compensation increases hit a 45-year high at a record net 35 percent.
• Positive earnings trends reached a survey high at a net three percent.
• Positive sales trends are at the highest level since 1995.
• Expansion plans are the most robust in survey history.

American troops have been in South Korea since the Korean War, which began in 1950 when North Korean forces crossed the line that had been drawn to separate the two nations after World War II. When open hostilities ended in 1953 — North and South Korea are still technically at war — the support forces of both sides’ allies remained on the ground.

Get your history fix in one place: sign up for the weekly TIME History newsletter

By the late 1950s, about 60,000 U.S. troops were stationed in South Korea. Meanwhile, there were were 400,000 Chinese soldiers in North Korea, says Charles K. Armstrong, a Korean Studies specialist at Columbia University, but they were kicked out in 1958. There haven’t been foreign forces in the North since.

“Both sides thought South Korea was too poor and weak to defend itself,” says Armstrong. “North Korea was arguably militarily stronger and the economy recovered more quickly, so South Korea felt very vulnerable for many years after the Korean War. The economy of South Korea didn’t pass the North until the early ’70s.”

That’s when the regular joint military exercises started — in the ’70s — and the U.S. has only agreed to suspend them once before, in 1992. That was enough to get North Korea to agree to denuclearization at that time, though it became apparent that the nation’s actions didn’t match its words.

“Right after that, the U.S. said it had strong evidence that North Korea was developing nuclear weapons and then they went back to having the exercises and they continued ever since,” says Armstrong. “It does seem like a bit of an anachronism now that South Korea is so much stronger than the North in every way, except having nuclear weapons.”

Corker Accuses GOP Lawmakers of Cowering to Trump

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) accused his party of cowering before President Trump in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, CNN reports.

“In an animated exchange, Corker — who was trying to get a vote on an amendment as part of an ongoing debate over the Senate’s defense bill — argued that Republicans were blocking his trade proposal because they were afraid of Trump and what he might do to the party if they upset him in an election year.”

Said Corker: “We might poke the bear! My gosh, if the President gets upset with us we might not be in the majority.”

He added: “The United States Senate right now on June 12 is becoming a body where, well, we’ll do what we can do, but my gosh, if the President gets upset with us, then we might not be in the majority. And so let’s don’t do anything that might upset the President.”

THE PRESIDENT: Well, he is very talented. n an attempt to seal documents, Mueller warns Russia keeps meddling

Robert Mueller on Capitol Hill. Photo: Brendan Hoffman/Getty Images
Special counsel Robert Mueller's team has requested that a federal D.C. judge order to secure a heap of documents that have been shared with Russian-run Concord Management and Consulting LLC, "because of the potential for the information to be shared with foreign nationals and intelligence officials still working to sow discord" in the United States, CNN reports.

Why it matters: Mueller is warning that Russian intelligence agencies still have "interference operations" regarding U.S. election systems. The company in dispute was one of three companies that Mueller had charged in February along with 13 Russian nationals citing election meddling. Bloomberg adds that prosecutors "have uncovered evidence of other individuals and entities who are 'continuing to engage' in similar activities."

The intrigue: Bloomberg explains that Mueller and the attorneys for Concord, which has been linked to a veteran associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, "have been negotiating to obtain documents from the special counsel to mount a legal defense."

One key detail: Citing the court filing, Bloomberg highlights that U.S.-owned documents reveal "sources, methods and techniques used to identify the foreign actors behind these interference operations." If disclosed to foreign entities, the information could lead foreign intelligence services to details about U.S. operations and allow them to "adjust their conduct, thus undermining ongoing and future national security operations."

Trump's administration has been shredding thousands of documents to keep them from being used in the investigation.

Solomon Lartey spent the first five months of the Trump administration working in the Old Executive Office Building, standing over a desk with scraps of paper spread out in front of him.

Lartey, who earned an annual salary of $65,969 as a records management analyst, was a career government official with close to 30 years under his belt. But he had never seen anything like this in any previous administration he had worked for. He had never had to tape the president’s papers back together again.

Armed with rolls of clear Scotch tape, Lartey and his colleagues would sift through large piles of shredded paper and put them back together, he said, “like a jigsaw puzzle.” Sometimes the papers would just be split down the middle, but other times they would be torn into pieces so small they looked like confetti.

It was a painstaking process that was the result of a clash between legal requirements to preserve White House records and President Donald Trump’s odd and enduring habit of ripping up papers when he’s done with them — what some people described as his unofficial “filing system.”

Under the Presidential Records Act, the White House must preserve all memos, letters, emails and papers that the president touches, sending them to the National Archives for safekeeping as historical records.
The most reliable politics newsletter.

But White House aides realized early on that they were unable to stop Trump from ripping up paper after he was done with it and throwing it in the trash or on the floor, according to people familiar with the practice. Instead, they chose to clean it up for him, in order to make sure that the president wasn’t violating the law.

Staffers had the fragments of paper collected from the Oval Office as well as the private residence and send it over to records management across the street from the White House for Lartey and his colleagues to reassemble.

“We got Scotch tape, the clear kind,” Lartey recalled in an interview. “You found pieces and taped them back together and then you gave it back to the supervisor.” The restored papers would then be sent to the National Archives to be properly filed away.

Lartey said the papers he received included newspaper clips on which Trump had scribbled notes, or circled words; invitations; and letters from constituents or lawmakers on the Hill, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“I had a letter from Schumer — he tore it up,” he said. “It was the craziest thing ever. He ripped papers into tiny pieces.”

Lartey did not work alone. He said his entire department was dedicated to the task of taping paper back together in the opening months of the Trump administration.

One of his colleagues, Reginald Young Jr., who worked as a senior records management analyst, said that during over two decades of government service, he had never been asked to do such a thing.

“We had to endure this under the Trump administration,” Young said. “I’m looking at my director, and saying, ‘Are you guys serious?’ We’re making more than $60,000 a year, we need to be doing far more important things than this. It felt like the lowest form of work you can take on without having to empty the trash cans.”

Twits have to lie.

Economists at the Trade Partnership have found harmful employment impacts from the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum. The administration justified the tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended, claiming the imports from mostly U.S. allies “threaten to impair the national security” of the United States. The negative impact of the tariffs may surprise anyone who thinks a protectionist trade policy should mean more jobs for Americans.

The Trade Partnership analysis concluded:

DeloitteVoice

How To Overcome Institutional Barriers To Support Inclusive Growth Initiatives
“The tariffs, quotas and retaliation would increase the annual level of U.S. steel employment and non-ferrous metals (primarily aluminum) employment by 26,280 jobs over the first one-three years, but reduce net employment by 432,747 jobs throughout the rest of the economy, for a total net loss of 400,445 jobs;
“Sixteen jobs would be lost for every steel/aluminum job gained;
“More than two thirds of the lost jobs would affect workers in production and low-skill jobs.
“Every state will experience a net loss of jobs.”
One reason for this result is that nearly 40 times more people in America work in jobs that use steel and aluminum than in jobs connected to producing steel and aluminum. “American workers making steel/aluminum: 170,000. American workers consuming steel/aluminum: 6.5 million,” notes trade attorney Scott Lincicome.

Today, the decision to intern Japanese Americans is widely viewed by historians and legal scholars as a blemish on Roosevelt’s wartime record.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the FBI arrested over 1200 Japanese aliens throughout the United States. Over the next several weeks, President Roosevelt received contradictory advice about further action.
FDR’s military advisers recommended the exclusion of persons of foreign descent, including American citizens, from sensitive areas of the country as a safeguard against espionage and sabotage. The Justice Department initially resisted any relocation order, questioning both its military necessity and its constitutionality.
But the shock of Pearl Harbor and of Japanese atrocities in the Philippines fueled already tense race relations on America’s West Coast. In the face of political, military, and public pressure, Roosevelt accepted the relocation proposal. The Attorney General acquiesced after the War Department relieved the Justice Department of any responsibility for implementation.

The search and Marlyn Pruitt’s eventual hiring at the Judicial Crisis Network — as a temporary independent contractor — raises more ethics questions for Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt.

They didn't intern Italian-Americans and the didn't intern German-Americans.

They interned Japanese-Americans because they had slant eyes and yellow skin.

They knew it was wrong then as they do now. Your apology for FDR is pathetic.

People accused of political crimes are arrested and sentenced to prison camps without trials, while their families are often kept in the dark about their whereabouts. Up to 120,000 inmates were in the country’s four major political prisons in 2014 and were subjected to gruesome conditions, according to the United Nations report.

Prisoners are starved, forced to work, tortured and raped. Reproductive rights are denied through forced abortions and infanticide. Some are executed — sometimes in public. Hundreds of thousands of political prisoners have died in the camps over the past 50 years, the United Nations report found.

In addition to the political camps, North Korea also operates prisons for those accused of ordinary crimes. Some prisons are short-term labor camps. Others hold prisoners who face long-term torture, starvation and other suffering.
Mr. Kim’s enemies, and family, have been executed

Since Mr. Kim assumed power in 2011, taking over from his father at 26, Kim Jong-il, he has consolidated his power through executions. In the first six years as leader, he has ordered the executions of at least 340 people, according to the Institute for National Security Strategy, a think tank arm of the National Intelligence Service.

In 2016, Kim Yong-jin, the deputy premier for education, was killed in front of a firing squad after showing “disrespectful posture” in a meeting. Hyon Yong-chol, a general over the armed forces, fell asleep in a meeting. He was executed with an antiaircraft gun.
