For anyone who is still confused by this...

"I voted in favor of the President’s proposed compromise, which would have achieved both goals," Romney said in a statement following the vote. "When that measure failed, I also voted for an alternative proposal that would open the government and give the Democrats two weeks to put up or shut up — come to the table and agree to a final deal on border security and enforcement."

The key here was that six Republicans agreed in principal to what Lindsay Graham and others had suggested a couple of weeks ago. If the GOP would agree to reopen the Government for a short period of time, that they would expect that the Democrats would then be willing to come to the table and negotiate in good faith on a border security proposal that would include more money to expand on the southern barrier.

The problem is that most everyone understands that even if you gave the Democrats what they are asking for at this point (a temporary reopening of the government) that we would be right back in the exact same position on Feb 9th. Pelosi is already on record as saying that she pretty much "never" plans on making "any" concessions regarding a southern border barrier. Doesn't matter if we reopen the Government and start negotiating again, the Pelosi negotiations will never include more than $1.00 for a border barrier.

So you are kicking the can down the road so to speak. Not sure that anyone's opinion would change if we reopened the Government for two weeks, there was no agreement, and things closed back down again. Everyone would go right back to their same corners, make the same arguments, and dig in just as hard.

White House Desperate for a Shutdown Deal
January 24, 2019 at 7:43 pm EST

Politico
“Now that the Senate has shot down President Trump’s compromise offer to end the month-long government shutdown, White House officials aren’t sure of their next move. But they do know one thing: they’re losing, and they want to cut a deal.

“The president is weighing the idea of a three-week continuing resolution to fund the government, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) revealed Thursday afternoon, reviving a prospect the president has previously ruled out. Trump acknowledged the proposal in an afternoon meeting with lawmakers, saying that Democrats would have to offer ‘some sort of pro-rated down payment’ on the Mexican border wall he is demanding.

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly shot down Graham’s idea, however, telling reporters late Thursday ‘that is not a reasonable agreement.'”

GOP Senators Getting Nervous
January 24, 2019 at 8:10 pm EST

“Frustrated GOP senators read Vice President Pence the riot act at a closed-door meeting Thursday, telling him the partial government shutdown needs to end soon,” The Hill reports.

“Republican senators, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), warned the vice president that prolonging the shutdown is not a smart political strategy, in hopes of sending a clear message to President Trump that he needs to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.”

I don't know if you watched the President today.
He's scared. He doesn't care about the people who can't pay their bills. He suggested that they should go to the grocery stores and ask for free food.

You keep saying that the President and his wall are more important than the safety of aircraft across the country. You keep saying that if you oppose the wall that I don't care about children being sold to pedophiles. You have lost your mind.

James -

When all else fails, go to the liberal journalists who all apparently have inside insight on what the President and Republicans are thinking. So far, they have been correct... probably one or two percent of the time.

But I bet it makes you feel better to read this stuff, huh?

As of today, there are still far more Democrats who have publicly offered that they would support a border barrier to end this shutdown. Not sure I have heard any Republican say anything other than they would support a limited reopening of the Government for purposes of more negotiations.

Sure, liberal journalists with all that inside information on Republicans will tell you that privately, the whole bunch is just about ready to cave.

According to Roger, we have about two hours till the day ends... and old Rog guaranteed us that this was settled today!

Can't wait to wake up to a great super deal to reopen our wonderful government.

Funny how this works.

Announcement over the weekend that duel bills would be voted on.
- Everyone believed they would fail
Monday people talked about the duel bills
- Everyone believed they would fail
Tuesday people talked about the duel bills
- Everyone believed they would fail
Wednesday people talked about the duel bills
- Everyone believed they would fail

Today they vote.
- Suddenly the fact that they failed is some sort of epic news that has rattled the President into submission.

Yes... according to Roger. The President will fall on the sword today. Done deal. Kerry in a landslide.

A lot more Republicans are getting nervous.

----

Meanwhile several Republicans abandoned their party to vote for a Democratic counter proposal offered by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that would have funded the entire government through March 8 without providing any additional money for the wall. That was a grim sign for Trump and his aides looking for a way to end the partial shutdown.

Senator Bennett D Colorado shredded Ted Cruz in the most emotional speech I have ever seen before. He reminded that the President had alleged that his father was involved in the assassination of JFK.

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) tore into Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) during a fiery speech on the Senate floor Thursday amid heightened tensions over the ongoing government shutdown.

Bennet, a typically subdued and moderate senator, unloaded on Cruz after the Texas Republican joined other GOP lawmakers to introduce a bill to pay members of the Coast Guard during the partial shutdown but not reopen the government.

"I seldom rise on this floor to contradict somebody on the other side," Bennet said during his speech. "I have worked very hard over the years to work in a bipartisan way with the presiding officer with my Republican colleagues, but these crocodile tears that the senator from Texas is crying for first responders are too hard for me to take."

"When the senator from Texas shut this government down in 2013, my state was flooded. It was under water. People were killed. People's houses were destroyed. Their small businesses were ruined forever. And because of the senator from Texas, this government was shut down for politics," Bennet shouted, referring to a series of floods that killed eight Coloradans.

Cruz, who was a freshman senator at the time, led the charge to shut down the government over funding for the Affordable Care Act. The 16-day shutdown hindered federal relief aid funds from reaching Colorado.

"There's an old saying among Texas trial lawyers - if you have the facts, you bang the facts. If you have the law, you bang the law. If you don't have either one, you bang the table. We've seen a whole lot of table-banging right here on this floor. The senator from Colorado spent a great deal of time yelling, spent a great deal of time attacking me personally," Cruz responded. "I will say in all of my time in the Senate, I don't believe I have ever bellowed or yelled at a colleague on the Senate floor and I hope I never do that."

Bennet's tirade came after Cruz spoke to boost a bill proposed by Sens. John Kennedy (R-La.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) that would let members of the Coast Guard receive paychecks during the record-long partial government shutdown.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Roger Stone, a confidant of President Donald Trump, was arrested Friday morning on several criminal charges stemming from the special counsel's Russia investigation.

Stone is charged in a seven-count indictment with witness tampering, obstruction and false statements about his interactions related to the release by WikiLeaks of hacked emails during the 2016 presidential election. Some of those false statements were made to the House intelligence committee, according to the indictment.

Commonsense said...

Another process crime. In other words, another Mueller created crime.

The indictment brought by special counsel Robert Mueller does not accuse Stone of coordinating with the Russian government's election interference in 2016, the key matter under investigation in the probe.

now there's a shocker. another arrest completely unrelated to the phony "russia hacked our election by spending $100,000 on fakebook ads" probe. that "key matter" is not and never was "key" to anything because it never was the intended mission.

But the indictment lays out in detail Stone's conversations about stolen Democratic emails posted by WikiLeaks in the weeks before the Republican beat Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. Mueller's office has said those emails, belonging to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, were hacked by Russian intelligence officers.

for the umpteenth time, podesta's emails were not hacked. the dumb fuck was phished, and willingly gave his password to whoever was doing the phishing. then the dumb fuck absolutely refuses to engage law enforcement, and prefers instead to engage crowdstrike to look into it. now THERE'S your crime, AND your cover-up.

this is a sham on fucking stilts.

stone's REAL crime? he flat out refuses to bear false witness against trump, and therefore he must be destroyed.

meanwhile, that dozen russians mueller indicted? resting comfortably in russia, with nothing whatsoever to worry about, because we have top men - TOP MEN - on the case.

if what was happening wasn't so evil and destructive it could be made into a sit-com.

and the alky dances a jig with his walker singing "we really got him this time!"

Commonsense said...

According to Stone, the real reason for the indictments is that Stone didn't give Mueller what he wanted because to do so would mean he would have to lie like some people. (I assume he mean Cohen).

Don't know whether it's true or not but it's pretty evident that Mueller is fustrated by the course of the investigation. No matter how hard he pushes there is no there there.

White House says Stone indictment has nothing to do with Trump

Ad:
WASHINGTON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - The federal special counsel's indictment of Roger Stone, a longtime associate of President Donald Trump, in the Russia probe are unrelated to the president or the White House, Trump's press secretary said on Friday.

"The charges brought against Mr. Stone have nothing to do with the president, has nothing to do with White House," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in an interview with CNN. "The president did nothing wrong." (Reporting by Doina Chiacu;)
