Trump further asks for access to a computer server and references Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity company related to the Russia hacking investigation. Former FBI director James Comey referenced Crowdstrike as one of the critical elements in the investigation, and that investigation is being reviewed by United States Attorney John Durham. A computer server and other information connected to the Russia hacking evidence would likely assist Durham in his investigation. The references to Barr in the transcript could be defended on that basis.

PRESIDENT TRUMP has shifted his solicitation of foreign assistance for his reelection campaign from private phone calls to live television. On Thursday, he publicly repeated his appeal to the Ukrainian government to investigate Democratic candidate Joe Biden — and called on China to investigate Mr. Biden also. China is a major adversary of the United States and a dictatorship that does not respect the rule of law. Even considering Mr. Trump’s record of shredding norms of presidential behavior, it’s astounding that he would believe that these appeals do not transgress his oath of office. It would be even more shocking — and more damaging to our political system — if congressional Republicans agreed with him.
It’s hard to know where to begin in describing the gross impropriety of Mr. Trump’s behavior. But we’ll start with facts: The allegations that the president is suggesting Ukraine and China should investigate are manifestly false. Abundant evidence disproves the charge that Mr. Biden, as vice president, sought the dismissal of a Ukrainian prosecutor to protect his son Hunter, who was then on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. And Mr. Trump’s claim that Hunter Biden took “billions of dollars” out of China is even more ludicrous. Hunter Biden joined the advisory board of an investment fund with Chinese partners, but, his lawyer said, has earned no return or compensation.
Mr. Trump is seeking to call attention to Hunter Biden’s business involvement with foreign partners who were probably hoping to trade on his family name. That’s unseemly — but no more so than the business favors obtained by Mr. Trump’s own children from China and other countries. If there were actual evidence of wrongdoing in these relationships, it should be investigated not by foreign authorities but by the Justice Department, which could properly ask other governments for cooperation, if any were needed.

The Truth About Impeachment
The truth is there's a large part of the left — and some never-Trumpers on the right — who never accepted Trump's election and have wanted him impeached from the start. The Washington Post ran a piece headlined "The campaign to impeach President Trump has begun" on Jan. 20, 2017 — inauguration day. Talk about no honeymoon — and no respect for America's voters.
Concerns about the political nature of what we're seeing were exacerbated when we learned the so-called whistleblower who reported Trump's Ukraine call was in touch with Rep. Adam Schiff — the Democrats' lead on impeachment — even before he came forward to the public with his charges. Privately colluding with the staff of some of Trump's biggest political opponents? That seems a little partisan for a good government whistleblower. It also seems pretty clear that Schiff was dishonest when he went on TV and directly denied prior contact with the whistleblower. None of this means Schiff should be removed from office, but by the standards he's setting, he certainly could be.
A lot of people in Washington — in both parties — aren't Trump fans. They complain that Trump doesn't act the way most presidents act, that his attacks against his opponents are not presidential, that he lacks the requisite political experience and has hired some truly horrible staffers. There may be truth to some of that. Trump has certainly shaken up Washington. His supporters would argue that's exactly what they wanted him to do. This is a legitimate debate worth having. Fortunately, America's founders set up a pretty good system to have just this sort of debate every four years: It's called an election. The next one's already started. The facts are out there for the American people to weigh as they make their decision. How about we let them sort all this out? There's no need to come up with thin excuses for a purely partisan impeachment process when we have an election right around the corner.

Perhaps these are just coincidences. Perhaps Hunter Biden possesses some vast expertise in business that he honed while snorting cocaine during his time in the Navy. But it does not seem completely unreasonable to imagine his proximity to the White House might have played a role in his hiring.
That brings us back to President Trump. Trump clearly feels that something untoward and perhaps illegal occurred regarding Hunter Biden in Ukraine and China. In regard to the former, he received information from attorney Rudy Giuliani raising questions about the firing of a prosecutor investigating the company where the younger Biden worked. So the question is, is it illegal for Trump to ask foreign leaders to look into it?
