Some takeaways

Some of my takeaways from the portions of the debate that I caught:

  • Quid Pro Joe has not shaken the rust. In one segment he said he would eliminate capital gains as well as raise it to the highest level in history. Then he had issues counting up to his "three points" he wanted to make. He's become rumblin, stumblin Joe.
  • Liz Warren found herself as the lightning rod last night, and was quick to appear defensive. Her head in the sand approach to handling criticisms of her plans reinforces the critique that she doesn't have serious ideas. She needs to find a different "expression" when they are showing her reacting to what others are saying.
  • Andrew Yang was quite effective in his own way again. Just sort of common sense.  His list of countries that have tried and failed a "wealth tax" will be used along the way if either Warren or Bernie become the candidate. Of course, he is correct to point out that it won't work here either, which offends the big idea Democrats.
  • Klobuchar, Yang, Booker, Gabbard, Steyer went full on "realist" and I expect one of those candidates to emerge from that block down the stretch and play off the other big idea Democrats (who are not so realistic).
  • This field of Democrats are angry on par with the Detroit Lion's fans after this week's Monday Night football robbery. Who could break more blood vessels looking angry might have been a good competition to bet on. I'll go with Pete over Bernie by a hair, simply because Bernie is "always" angry so it loses some effect.
  • It's ironic to listen to Democrats chastise and criticize each other over their inability to stop chastising and criticizing each other.

Another debate where a good portion of the pundits will suggest that Donald Trump came away as the big winner once again.

Booker falsely claimed that Trump is the unhealthiest candidate running for president. This was foolish of him because it only served to shine a light into his excellent physical health in contrast to the health concerns both Biden and Bernie have had over the last few months.

MAJORITY WANT TRUMP BOTH IMPEACHED AND REMOVED
October 16, 2019 at 8:43 am EDT

A new Gallup poll finds 52% of Americans say President Trump should be impeached and removed from office, while 46% say he should not be.

The 52% who support removing Trump is higher than Gallup ever found for removing President Nixon until August 1974.

Trump’s approval rating remains flat at 39%.

Erdogan Refuses to Meet Pence

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will refuse to meet with Vice President Mike Pence, who is due to travel to Turkey to argue for a ceasefire in the ongoing Syria conflict, NBC News reports.

Said Erdogan: “I’m not going to talk to them. They will be talking to their counterparts. When Trump comes here, I’ll be talking.”

Trump Tax Documents Show Major Inconsistencies
October 16, 2019 at 6:46 am EDT

ProPublica:
“Documents obtained by ProPublica show stark differences in how Donald Trump’s businesses reported some expenses, profits and occupancy figures for two Manhattan buildings, giving a lender different figures than they provided to New York City tax authorities. The discrepancies made the buildings appear more profitable to the lender — and less profitable to the officials who set the buildings’ property tax.

“For instance, Trump told the lender that he took in twice as much rent from one building as he reported to tax authorities during the same year, 2017. He also gave conflicting occupancy figures for one of his signature skyscrapers, located at 40 Wall Street.”

MY, MY. FANCY THAT.

Pence and Pompeo Seek Ceasefire In Syria
October 16, 2019 at 6:41 am EDT

“Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey in Ankara on Thursday (NO THEY WON'T SEE ABOVE) to relay President Trump’s DEMAND that Mr. Erdogan negotiate a cease-fire in Syria and to reiterate the president’s threat to impose economic sanctions if he does not comply,” the New York Times reports.

But Erdogan tells Reuters: “They say ‘declare a ceasefire.’ We will never declare a ceasefire. They are pressuring us to stop the operation. They are announcing sanctions. Our goal is clear. We are not worried about any sanctions.”

MAYBE THE RUSSKIES CAN HELP US NOW THAT TRUMP CAN'T.

Ex-Pompeo Adviser to Decry Politicization of State Dept
October 16, 2019 at 10:40 am EDT

“Michael McKinley, the former senior adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo until his sudden resignation last week, will tell House impeachment investigators Wednesday that career diplomats were mistreated during his tenure and some had their careers derailed for political reasons,” the Washington Post reports.

“McKinley will outline how his concerns culminated with the recall of the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, a punitive action he and many other rank-and-file diplomats viewed as wholly unjustified.”

SOUNDS IMPEACHABLE TO ME.

A "slowdown" is not the same thing as a recession.

But then again, if Democrats (and their media cronies) can redefine things like an "investigation" into "election interference" I suppose they can just "redefine" the meaning of "recession" to just be one quarter that is slower then the previous.

The U.S. District Court (Southern District of Ohio) has dismissed, with prejudice, the Primus Group v. Smith & Wesson, et al lawsuit. The decision was delivered October 9, eliminating the plaintiff’s claims against several prominent AR-15 firearms manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson, Remington Arms Company, SIG Sauer, Sturm, Ruger & Company, Colt Manufacturing, and Armalite.

“This decision by the federal judge to dismiss with prejudice this frivolous case is pleasing, if not unexpected,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs and General Counsel. “These are lawful and federally-regulated AR-15 modern sporting rifle manufacturers that make semiautomatic rifles for lawful purposes. The judge asserted that the proper venue to establish public firearms policy is through the legislature and not the courts.

The court found the plaintiffs had no standing to bring the case against the defendants. This decision rightfully asserts that those who purposefully and criminally misuse firearms are the ones who are responsible for those crimes. It further affirms that activist lawsuits to prompt judicial action are not the proper avenue to establish policy.

Another man is arrested in probe of Giuliani associates
The Associated Press
Oct 16th 2019 1:12PM

NEW YORK (AP) รข€” A Florida man wanted in a campaign finance case involving associates of Rudy Giuliani is in federal custody after flying Wednesday to Kennedy Airport in New York City TO TURN HIMSELF IN, federal authorities said.

David Correia, 44, was named in an indictment with two Giuliani associates and another man arrested last week on charges they made illegal contributions to politicians and a political action committee supporting President Donald Trump. Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, is Trump's personal lawyer.

All the other defendants in the case were already in custody.

Prosecutors said Correia, who owns a home with his wife in West Palm Beach, was part of efforts by co-defendants Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman to leverage outsized political donations to Republican candidates and committees as part of an effort to advance their business interests.

Both Parnas and Fruman have a history of business dealings with Giuliani. Prosecutors said that, among other things, the pair made campaign contributions with the intent of lobbying U.S. politicians to oust the country's ambassador to Ukraine. At the time, Giuliani was trying to get Ukrainian officials to investigate the son of Trump's potential Democratic challenger, Joe Biden.

Correia is accused of having conspired with the other defendants, including Ukrainian-born U.S. citizen Andrey Kukushkin, to make political donations to local and federal politicians in New York, Nevada and other states with the aim of trying to get support for a new recreational marijuana business.

All four defendants were expected to appear Thursday in federal court in Manhattan.

A lawyer for Correia is not yet listed in court records.

Giuliani has said he had no knowledge of illegal donations and hadn't seen any evidence that Parnas and Fruman did anything wrong.

Correia is listed as the registered agent for a Florida corporation tied to a series of wire transfers prosecutors allege was part of an elaborate effort to hide the true source of funds used to make the donations.

He posed with then-Rep. Pete Sessions in a 2018 photo taken inside the Texas Republican's Capitol Hill office that Parnas posted on social media with the caption "Hard at work!!"

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Trump was frustrated. He doesn’t like foreign interventions to begin with, he has no talent for diplomacy (and, after mass firings and departures, hardly any senior diplomats with any knowledge of the region), so he’s leaving—a decision he made without consulting his advisers, who, whenever he’s mulled going this route in the past, have opposed the notion unanimously.

Trump nearly took this step in December 2018. He was talking on the phone with Erdogan (just as he did on Sunday). Erdogan said that, with ISIS defeated, the United States had no reason to be in Syria. Trump agreed and said he’d pull out the troops right away. This was the move that finally pushed Jim Mattis to resign as secretary of defense (though, actually, he’d decided the previous summer to leave by the end of the year). Brett McGurk, the U.S. envoy to the region (a job he’d also held under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama) soon followed. Eventually, Trump changed his mind. Now, 10 months later, with all the naysayers are gone, he changed his mind again.

Inside Syria, the Kurds will make an alliance with the Syrian government, thereby strengthening Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The violence will escalate. Probably Trump wouldn’t care either way, though the affected Syrian people will. In any case, the chances of a political settlement dim further—and the chances of an ISIS revival leap up.

Out in the rest of the world, this will be seen as another sign of Trump’s—and, therefore, America’s—erratic behavior and ultimate unreliability. Friends will seek alliances outside Washington’s orbit; foes will see an open path to pursue their interests with little fear of obstruction.

Some might say that Trump has proved once again that America First means America Alone. But in this case, he is not even putting America first; he’s violating all but the narrowest definition of American interests. That is because, at bottom, Trump has no idea what American interests are.

Giuliani Probe Includes Counterintelligence Concerns
October 16, 2019 at 2:24 pm EDT

“For months, investigators looking into Rudy Giuliani’s business dealings in Ukraine have dug into everything from possible financial entanglements with alleged corrupt Ukrainian figures to counterintelligence concerns raised by some of those business ties,” CNN reports.

“The counterintelligence part of the investigation indicates that FBI and criminal prosecutors in Manhattan are looking at a broader set of issues related to Giuliani, President Trump’s personal attorney, than has been previously reported.”
