An interesting counterintuitive poll?

Poll: As Coronavirus Spreads, Fewer Americans See Pandemic As A Real Threat
Just about 56% of Americans consider the coronavirus a “real threat,” representing a drop of 10 percentage points from last month. At the same time, a growing number of Americans think the coronavirus is being “blown out of proportion.”
“Since the pandemic has taken root and grown in the United States, Democrats and Republicans are now poles apart,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute of Public Opinion. “The consequences of these differing perspectives are shaping how people are responding to calls for action.”

There is also a generational gap as well as quite obviously a geography gap with people responding differently based both on their age and where they live. Talk to a millennial out here in Seattle and they believe we are facing the black plague. Talk to a boomer in the MSP airport and they believe it's nothing to worry about.

All that being said, I find it a little counterintuitive that the number of people that see it as a real threat is going down at the same time the country is setting up more and more restrictions and reactions to the virus itself.

The only thing that provides possible clarity (and this is something that sort of bugs me) is the constant moving of the goalposts. Just a  couple of weeks or so ago, people were demanding that would be seeing exponential growth as soon as this week. Then I heard that the real growth would not be for two or three more weeks, but another source states that we are fifteen weeks (or four months) away from the "peak" of the virus. People are going to have a hard time staying this vigilant (and this scared) for the next 15 weeks... if we are still waiting at that point for it to explode.

So I suspect that there is going to continue to be some drop in this number if the amount of deaths are still following a fairly linear path coming into April.  On the flip side, as testing ramps up, the number of reported cases will also ramp up (even if the deaths lag behind that curve).

Working backwards, the best guesstimates are putting the mortality rate at between a half percent and one percent. If you add up our deaths and critical patients right now, and work backwards it suggests that our real number of cases are no less than somewhere between ten and twenty five thousand. We just haven't detected all of them yet.

A Generational War Is Brewing Over Coronavirus
March 17, 2020 at 1:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 200 Comments

Wall Street Journal:
“Data released last week by the National Health Institute in Italy, currently the world’s worst-hit country, shows mortality rates starting at 0% for patients aged 0 to 29 and edging up to peak at 19% for those over 90.”

“Yet scientists say tests have shown children and young adults are no less likely than older people to get infected and transmit the virus. Epidemiologists are growing concerned that the millennial pushback against social-distancing measures—and an emerging generational divide about how the disease is perceived—could undo all efforts to slow the spread of the virus and put vulnerable people at high risk.”

New Yorkers Should Be Prepared to ‘Shelter In Place’

March 17, 2020 at 3:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that New Yorkers should prepare for a “shelter-in-place” order in the coming days as local officials try to contain the fast-moving coronavirus, CNBC reports.

A decision will be made in the next 48 hours.

I think two factors account for the results of the poll.

1. The number of deaths haven't skyrocketed as fast as the number of confirm cases. (Almost entirely due to more testing). By far the great majority of deaths were to the elderly with pre-existing conditions. Even among that group (and I'm a member of it) there is no feeling that COVID-19 is an automatic death sentence.

2. More and more people are having more confidence their federal, state and local governments have the situation under control. Unlike China (and practically every other country in the world) there was an extraordinary amount of transparency from the CDC as well as state and local entities.

Trump's consistent optimism while mocked by liberal may have had a salubrious effect on Americans.

Via Twitchy, Harmeet K. Dhillon uncorks a rant for the ages.

1/As a San Francisco resident and business owner, I'm wondering--can I trust the health judgments of leaders who let thousands live on the streets in their filth? And if we are now getting homeless into shelter, why couldn't that have happened earlier? Doesn’t their health count?
2/ All of a sudden we are supposed to accept 24-hour curfews "for your own safety" from people who order the police to stand down when Antifa & friends beat the hell out of taxpayers; people who refuse to enforce laws they don't like (death penalty, bail, property crimes) .../

3/ City leaders who literally give wanted alien criminals a public heads up when ICE is about to conduct raids are now telling me what's best, declaring a death penalty for businesses, no hearings or due process?! Forgive me if I don't fall right into line with the fascism .../

4/ which seems awfully situational. The Governor's suggestions yesterday that older and vulnerable people take extra care and stay inside seemed reasonable. Liberal city leaders decided to seize the opportunity and throw the whole economy into a tailspin as collateral damage .../

5/ but don't worry -- we'll soon have a government sponsored bailout for favored groups soon, funded with a tax increase crammed down the throats of the dwindling number of taxpayers. Homeless go back to the streets, illegal alien criminals get sanctuary, car break-one continue...

6/ Criminals continue to be released from jail or not arrested at all, and we all become more habituated, like sheep, to the loss of liberty yet again, "for our safety." I'm not buying it. I don't buy it with FISA renewal, with gun grabbing, or with this sweeping lack of process.

/7 SF Mayor London is tied to a corruption investigation of a federally indicted city bureaucrat she dated. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo mocked Trump supporters assaulted by criminals while police stood down. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff tips off wanted violent illegal aliens ... /

/8 .... these are the Bay Area rulers telling 7.1 million+ citizens -- more than the population of many US states -- to stay indoors, shut down businesses? Great judgment, all of them.
