I was technically alive when Nixon beat both Humphrey and McGovern, but being in my single digits for age I really don't remember much, if anything, about those. Too busy being a child. Ironically, those Nixon elections, (especially the "McGovern" election) seems to be the "only" losses that many Democrats seem to remember. Ever since that time, they have desperately tried to avoid another "McGovern" type candidate.
The problem is that this strategy hasn't actually worked very well. Every time they pick an establishment candidate to avoid another "McGovern" they seem to lose. When they have won, it's been with the candidate whom excited the Democrats and promised something other than the status quo. Whether or not you considered either Clinton or Obama to be mainstream Democrats, neither were the first pick of the establishment and both offered a huge personality and an almost cult-like rabid following.
I am quite certain there was much hand wringing from establishment Democrats in both 1992 and 2008 when it became clear that a brash young liberal would be taking up the banner. Clinton was not well known, and already facing issues about personal improprieties, while most everyone just assumed that 2008 was Hillary's Presidency to lose.
So the question becomes... why are the Democrats NOT looking for the next Bill Clinton or Barack Obama? Why do they always desperately seem to be looking for the next Walter Mondale, John Kerry, or Hillary Clinton?

Said Taylor: “I think Joe Biden is the candidate who can unify all of the Democrats, and he’s the candidate who can appeal to moderates and Republicans like me who don’t want to see four more years of President Trump.”
He added: “When it was down to him and Hillary, I kind of said, ‘Well, you are a Republican, and yeah he’s nuts, but maybe he’ll get better and you know he’s going to lower taxes.’ I slowly talked myself into it. ‘He can’t seriously be this deranged once he gets in there,’ and he’s even more deranged now than I thought then.
