Nicholas Kristof: Why Biden is the change candidate
If you want to oust President Donald Trump this fall and then achieve far-reaching changes such as universal health care, who should you vote for?Until last week, the answer for many was Bernie Sanders, the champion of a “political revolution” that includes “Medicare for All.” But increasingly there’s a sense that in practice the real “change candidate” may be Joe Biden — because he has a better chance of winning the presidency and helping to elect a Democratic Congress — and that’s why he was the big winner Super Tuesday.
I will give Kristof some credit here for understanding the situation, even if he lives in some sort of lala world. But to be clear, Joe Biden is not Bill Clinton or Barack Obama or any sort of change candidate... he is exactly the sort of candidate that has consistently lost (for both sides).
The political reality is that the safe choice (Clinton, Romney, McCain, Kerry, Gore, Dole, etc) don't win. The more boring and mainstream they appear, the less successful they seem to be. In no sane world that really respects experience and a conventional demeanor would a business man like Donald Trump or a one term Senator like Barack Obama become the leader of the free world. If we actually lived in that world, then Trump would have lost to Jeb Bush in the primary or certainly to Hillary Clinton in the General election. Obama would have lost to Clinton in the primary, and never beaten respected experience candidates like John McCain or Mitt Romney in the General.
The truth is that Americans want Presidents (right, wrong, or indifferent) to inspire them. They want them to move them emotionally. They want them to be larger than life. They don't want someone with "experience" or with moderate views. They just don't. Maybe that's wrong. But it just is.

What Americans often want in the next president is someone DIFFERENT from what they have just had.
That's a very very true statement if you are judging a two term President who is out of time. But "incumbent" elections are normally about that incumbent and their success or failure in office.
Biden is not enough of a candidate to make Americans want to give up the economic growth and other tangible successes... just because they don't like some of Trump's behavior in the White House (Bill Clinton was a classic example of a President who was both respected for results but tarnished for his in-office actions).
The last incumbent to lose was GHWB in 1992, and he lost to an upstart change candidate who people truly believed would garner in a new revolution (first baby boomer President). Bush also was dealing with a horrible economy and the reputation of someone who put his foreign policy ahead of his domestic. But he was a likable guy with no problems with personal actions.
Same with Jimmy Carter (the previous). A likable guy who was above reproach. Voted out because he was seen as incompetent as President.

Obviously, the math here is spectacularly off. If Michael Bloomberg had divided the money he spent on his presidential run evenly among Americans, we would each have got $1.53, not $1 million. For Bloomberg to give $1 million to each American, he would have to be worth $327 trillion (in cash), which, for context, is around 17 times American GDP and about five-and-a-half thousand times what he’s actually worth. The scale of the error here is galactic.
