Is coronavirus reactions a version Pascal's wager?

So if you are not familiar with Pascal's wager it basically is a theory that you should take into consideration the consequences of being right or wrong when you decided what to believe. It's generally tied to the belief in god, but it has implications that go above and beyond religion.

So in the religious consideration usually associated with Pascal's wager, the idea is that if you do believe in god and are correct. you get eternal joy. If you are wrong? No real consequences other than the fact that you spent your life believing in a god that doesn't exist. If you are an atheist and you are correct about god, there really isn't any reward other than just being right (and you will never know you were right after death). But if an atheist is wrong, then they are literally doomed to a eternity of suffering.

So it sort of feels like our Governments are making a Pascal's type wager on coronavirus. As pointed out by many in the health science field, we really don't have enough information to be making (or realistically justifying) the sort of draconian measures we are taking (link).  Instead, we appear to be making decisions under the wager that there is much more to lose if we don't act than if we do act, economy be damned.

The other issue of psychology here for our leaders (especially at the state levels) is not to be outdone. If other states or cities are banning this or banning that and your state or city doesn't, criticism from more deaths is certainly going to be a bigger stigma than criticism about the economy. This provides the incentive for Governors or Mayors to attempt to outdo each others, so they are not criticized for not acting decisive enough. The Governor here in Washington has been repeatedly criticized for leading from behind pretty much "anytime" he is not first to close something or ban something even if it is just by a day or two.

The pressure to take the most draconian measures far outweigh any pressure to allow for people to go about their everyday business. Time will tell if these were the right or wrong steps for us to take.

VDH was thinking along these lines

Some Coronavirus Humility
The pandemic may prove as bad as some warn; it is also possible that our response could prove as harmful as the virus itself.

indeed.

rather than send me a $1000 check that i don't need, how about relieving all of us of onerous taxes at every level, so we can spend that extra $$$ in our communities and keep those at the lower end of the scale working?

fine. means test it to lower income. but don't give EVERYONE a check. instead relieve the total tax burden across the board for six months so we can spend it at establishments like her employer.

btw dumb fuck, the waitress got laid off because her democrat mayor/governor ordered her employer to close her employer.

Funny thing, Rat...

In talking to these younger liberals in Seattle working in the service industry... they all accepted that this was the biggest black plague virus in history and they were perfectly accepting of the fact that their business was going to be shut own and that they might go bankrupt.

I figure they will just blame Trump and demand that this means we should all be communists.

Stock Market Plunges Again
March 18, 2020 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 350 Comments

“Financial markets continued to spasm Wednesday, with U.S. stocks plunging toward levels that pause trading, as the economic fallout from the pandemic outpaces the massive response from governments and central banks,” Bloomberg reports.

“The S&P 500 fell more than 6% and wiped out all the gains logged since Donald Trump’s inauguration.”

Wall Street Journal: “Investors are even shunning assets that are normally considered the safest, including long-term government bonds and gold. That rarely happens when riskier assets like stocks are also falling.”

An internal report from the Department of Health and Human Services leaked to the New York Times assumes that the “pandemic will last 18 months or longer and could include multiple waves of illness.”

Ch truth's 12:47 might better read "in talking to these younger people in Seattle working in the service industry... they all accepted that this was a very serious matter and they were perfectly accepting of the fact that their business was going to be shut own and that they might go bankrupt rather than millions of people having to die."
_______

Ch disagrees and thinks it would be preferable to accept all those deaths because Trump says it was the dirty Chinese commies who sent us this virus.

Know what James?? Millions of people have not died.

Currently only 8774 people have died worldwide.

If you project China's death toll vs population to the US you will get a maximum death toll of 944 people.

That's a far cry from "millions of deaths".

yup. several generations of public school indoctrination by union marxists has achieved the desired result.

these people have actually made peace with the net result of socialism - the equal distribution of misery.
