President suspends more travel...

Says the reason why Europe is seeing more outbreaks is because they didn't restrict travel

So the President took a little shot at the European leaders, many of whom judged him harshly for initiating the original travel ban on China, Iran, and South Korea. Not sure that this was necessary, but there is little reason to believe that he might be right in saying what he said.

So now, he is rubbing a little salt in the wound by suspending travel of Europeans to the United States (excluding the UK where there are under 500 known cases). One has to wonder what the "best" line of defense would be, but there is little argument that suspending travel from areas where the outbreak is more pronounced is prudent.

Now if we can put partisanship aside, and have our Congress and President work together to put together a package that "BOTH" helps the economy as a whole as well as uses a more surgical approach to prop up those most affected. Not sure if we can expect our leaders to behave as adults or not, but it sure would be nice for a change.

Starting to hear that the next two or three weeks are sort of make or break. Those expecting a global catastrophe and millions of deaths suggest that we should be seeing an exponential growth of both confirmed cases (to the degree that it can be tested) and confirmed deaths (to the degree that this can be confirmed).  Those who believe that we can still keep this reasonably under control are hoping for the same sort of linear growth that we have been seeing.

Europe Condemns Trump’s Travel Ban
March 12, 2020 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

The European Union issued a scathing statement condemning President Trump’s decision to ban most travel from Europe, the New York Times reports.

From the statement: “The coronavirus is a global crisis, not limited to any continent and it requires cooperation rather than unilateral action. The European Union disapproves of the fact that the U.S. decision to impose a travel ban was taken unilaterally and without consultation.”

Washington Post: “Of all the slights between Washington and Europe in recent years, the new travel restrictions had all the makings of a historic rupture.”

Trump’s Troubling Address Fails to Calm
March 12, 2020 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 184 Comments

Edward Luce: “On Wednesday night the global pandemic met US nationalism. It will not take long to see which comes off best. As Donald Trump was speaking, the Dow futures market nosedived. His Europe travel ban came just a few hours after the US stock market entered bear territory — a fall of 20 per cent or more — for the first time since the global financial crisis. It also followed the World Health Organization’s declaration of a global pandemic. Mr Trump’s address was meant to calm the waters. By the time he finished they were considerably rougher…”

“It is unclear how Europe and other countries will respond to Mr Trump’s dramatic announcement. In an ideal situation, America’s president would have acknowledged that the pathogen knows no borders and has no political loyalties. It poses a common threat that requires a co-ordinated global response.”

“That is not the way Mr Trump thinks. Public health officials say that millions of Americans will probably be infected. The official total now stands at 1,312. Mr Trump has never faced a crisis on anything like this scale — and it is still in its early stages. His remedies so far are cause for deep concern. Who will he blame when they fail?”

Pence Says It’s ‘Irresponsible’ to Downplay Outbreak

Vice President Mike Pence told NBC News that there has been “irresponsible rhetoric” from people who have downplayed the seriousness of the U.S. coronavirus outbreak.

However, just on Monday, President Trump himself downplayed the threat saying the “fake news media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything to inflame the coronavirus situation.”

Fumbled Global Response to the Pandemic
March 12, 2020 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

New York Times: “As the toll of those afflicted by the virus continued to soar and financial markets from Tokyo to New York continued to swoon, world leaders are finally starting to find their voices about the gravity of what is now officially a pandemic.”

“Yet it remains less a choir than a cacophony — a dissonant babble of politicians all struggling, in their own way, to cope with the manifold challenges posed by the virus, from its crushing burden on hospitals and health care workers to its economic devastation and rising death toll.”

“The choir also lacks a conductor, a role played through most of the post-World War II era by the United States.President Trump has failed to work with other leaders to fashion a common response, preferring to promote his border wall over the scientific advice of his own medical experts.

The epidemic control efforts unfolding today in China—including placing some 100 million citizens on lockdown, shutting down a national holiday, building enormous quarantine hospitals in days’ time, and ramping up 24-hour manufacturing of medical equipment—are indeed gargantuan. It’s impossible to watch them without wondering, “What would we do? How would my government respond if this virus spread across my country?”

Powered By
For the United States, the answers are especially worrying because the government has intentionally rendered itself incapable. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. In numerous phone calls and emails with key agencies across the U.S. government, the only consistent response I encountered was distressed confusion. If the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it isIf the United States still has a clear chain of command for pandemic response, the White House urgently needs to clarify what it is—not just for the public but for the government itself, which largely finds itself in the dark.
When Ebola broke out in West Africa in 2014, President Barack Obama recognized that responding to the outbreak overseas, while also protecting Americans at home, involved multiple U.S. government departments and agencies, none of which were speaking to one another. Basically, the U.S. pandemic infrastructure was an enormous orchestra full of talented, egotistical players, each jockeying for solos and fame, refusing to rehearse, and demanding higher salaries—all without a conductor. To bring order and harmony to the chaos, rein in the agency egos, and create a coherent multiagency response overseas and on the homefront, Obama anointed a former vice presidential staffer, Ronald Klain, as a sort of “epidemic czar” inside the White House, clearly stipulated the roles and budgets of various agencies, and placed incident commanders in charge in each Ebola-hit country and inside the United States. The orchestra may have still had its off-key instruments, but it played the same tune.

God you are dumber than the goat fucker.......you making excuses saying we depend on them!!!!! Your words.......sorry.....the virus was around and with CDC being eviscerated by trump.....had no presence in China to witness what was going on!!!! Asshole

Root cause is TRUMP!!!!

Amid warnings from public health officials that a 2020 outbreak of a new coronavirus could soon become a pandemic involving the U.S., alarmed readers asked Snopes to verify a rumor that U.S. President Donald Trump had “fired the entire pandemic response team two years ago and then didn’t replace them.”

The claim came from a series of tweets posted by Judd Legum, who runs Popular Information, a newsletter he describes as being about “politics and power.” Legum’s commentary was representative of sharp criticism from Democratic legislators (and some Republicans) that the Trump administration had ill-prepared the country for a pandemic even as one was looming on the horizon.

Legum outlined a series of cost-cutting decisions made by the Trump administration in preceding years that had gutted the nation’s infectious disease defense infrastructure. The “pandemic response team” firing claim referred to news accounts from Spring 2018 reporting that White House officials tasked with directing a national response to a pandemic had been ousted.

Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer abruptly departed from his post leading the global health security team on the National Security Council in May 2018 amid a reorganization of the council by then-National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Ziemer’s team was disbanded. Tom Bossert, whom the Washington Post reported “had called for a comprehensive biodefense strategy against pandemics and biological attacks,” had been fired one month prior.

It’s thus true that the Trump administration axed the executive branch team responsible for coordinating a response to a pandemic and did not replace it, eliminating Ziemer’s position and reassigning others, although Bolton was the executive at the top of the National Security Council chain of command at the time.

The fact that Europe feels "insulted" is the sort of P.C. shit that shouldn't matter, and the fact that they believe that their feelings are more important than health safety is probably why they have 20 times the cases as we do.

“Lawmakers in Congress are expressing outrage and confusion as to why the United States is not testing individuals for the COVID-19 coronavirus at as fast a pace as other countries, following a closed-door briefing with administration officials who failed to explain the discrepancy,” CNN reports.

“Members were exasperated with what they said was a lack of clarity in the officials’ answers, as lawmakers struggle to understand how the US has been so far outpaced by other countries grappling with the pandemic.”

A President Unequal to the Moment
March 12, 2020 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 35 Comments

Susan Glasser:
“Crises clarify. The bigger the crisis, the more the clarity, which is why the incompetence, dishonesty, and sheer callousness of the Trump Presidency have been clearer in recent days than ever before. As the coronavirus, as of Wednesday an official pandemic, spreads, the lives of Americans depend on the decisions made—or not made, as the case may be—by a President uniquely ill-suited to command in this type of public-health catastrophe. In that sense, the last few weeks may well have been the most clarifying of Donald Trump’s Presidency…

“Trump was detached from the unfolding reality of a global crisis that is unlike any in memory. I’ve watched Presidential speeches for a few decades now. I cannot recall one that was less equal to the moment.”

What I can say in all honesty... is that I hope not.

I don't get that same impression talking to many liberals who seem to be working overtime to both demand that things are dire and that it's all Trump's fault singlehandedly...

Ironically, the travel ban issued in January seems to be one of the major differences between our reaction and the reaction of most of Europe (which has suffered much greater spread much faster).

It might all catch up eventually with everyone, but the longer it takes the better people can prepare...

and so far, objectively, the United States has one of the lower rates of infection right now.

So as a matter of comparison, our CDC and our responses have been more successful to date, than the responses from other countries and their own health centers.

That's just an objective (non-subjective) fact.

While James is being a drama queen the fact is the coronavirus infection rate has been unprecedentedly slow. Far slower than H1N1 and Ebola. And far slower than anything in my experience and I had the measles,

There is simultaneously good news and bad news about the virus. The good news that in young and/or healthy individuals a virus infection results in mild or no systems at all. A healthy immune system easily fight it off. That however, is also the bad news as these infections often go undetected even with a test kit.

Congressional Doctor Predicts 75-150 Million Infections

“Congress’ in-house doctor told Capitol Hill staffers at a close-door meeting this week that he expects 70-150 million people in the U.S. — roughly a third of the country — to contract the coronavirus,” Axios reports.

“That estimate, which is in line with other projections from health experts, underscores the potential seriousness of this outbreak even as the White House has been downplaying its severity in an attempt to keep public panic at bay.”

Don’t take this the wrong way but if you were a young, hardline environmentalist looking for the ultimate weapon against climate change, you could hardly design anything better than coronavirus.

Unlike most other such diseases, it kills mostly the old who, let’s face it, are more likely to be climate sceptics. It spares the young. Most of all, it stymies the forces that have been generating greenhouse gases for decades. Deadly enough to terrify; containable enough that aggressive quarantine measures can prevent it from spreading. The rational response for any country determined to prevent loss of life is to follow China’s lead and lock down their economy to stem its spread.

I am not listening to Trump, because as far as I know he has not made any "predictions" at all. Nor has the CDC or the WHO

https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses

I have heard several predictions that it will fizzle out within a few weeks and I posted the story yesterday from a political writer who suggested 1.5 million Americans could die. I have been to two medical doctors who both expect it to be on the lower range of a normal seasonal flu virus (several thousand infected and a few thousand who die).

So I think it is fairly safe to say that nobody knows for sure, Reverend.

The idea that people sit around here today arguing about which hypothetical is more realistic is just downright stupid.

The idea that people are spreading gossip and doomsday scenarios and attacking our CDC and Government response for political reasons is disgusting.

Most everyone personally involved (States and Governors) have been more than pleased with the assistance and guidance the Feds are providing and I have heard of no current medical people (who are not associated with some political figure or a former political appointee) who is being ultra-critical.

The numbers speak for themselves... The CDC says we have 1215 and 36 deaths (other organizations say it's slightly higher). It's progressing much slower than previous deadly viruses and...

Jeeper creepers Reverend...

I would think you should be rooting for us to succeed...

Well, rrb, I guess you would never admit that you lied about how Obama handled the crisis that he faced.

FACTCHECK
Did Obama Declare Swine Flu an Emergency Only After ‘Millions’ Were Infected?
Not all "fact checks" are created equal.

Claim
U.S. President Barack Obama waited until millions were infected and thousands were dead before declaring a public health emergency concerning swine flu, the H1N1 virus.

Rating
False

Origin
On Feb. 28, 2020, the website PJ Media published an article claiming that U.S. President Barack Obama had waited until millions were infected and thousands were dead from swine flu, the H1N1 virus, before declaring a public health emergency in 2009. The article, which was presented as a “fact check,” got several simple details wrong.

In response to criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s handling of a recent outbreak of a new coronavirus, the PJ Media article opined that Obama had been lackadaisical about his response to a health emergency back in 2009, and that Trump by comparison had done his job admirably.

PJ Media writes:
Surely, St. Barack of Obama would have dealt with this horrible pandemic better than Orange Man Bad, right? No-Drama-Obama had this whole thing under control, of course!

Well, let’s compare and contrast…

Now, let’s go to the Wayback Machine. In April of 2009, the H1N1 became a pandemic.

But it wasn’t until six months later, October, that then-President Obama declared a public health emergency on what was already a pandemic. By that time, the disease had infected millions of Americans and more than 1,000 people had died in the U.S.
__________

There are several factual inaccuracies in this excerpt alone. For instance, PJ media writes that H1N1 became a pandemic in April 2009. But that’s not the case. The disease emerged in April but wasn’t declared a pandemic until June.

The excerpt also claims that Obama “declared a public health emergency on what was already a pandemic” in October 2009. But this is also wrong. Obama declared a national emergency, not a public health emergency, in October 2009. The Obama administration declared a public health emergency in April, months before swine flu was declared a pandemic. At the time that the Obama administration declared a public health emergency, only 20 confirmed cases (not over a million) of H1N1 existed in the United States.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

The New York Times reported on April 26, 2009:
Responding to what some health officials feared could be the leading edge of a global pandemic emerging from Mexico, American health officials declared a public health emergency on Sunday as 20 cases of swine flu were confirmed in this country, including eight in New York City.

[…] The emergency declaration in the United States lets the government free more money for antiviral drugs and give some previously unapproved tests and drugs to children. One-quarter of the national stockpile of 50 million courses of antiflu drugs will be released.

PJ Media also inaccurately presented a video in the article as if it showed Obama addressing the swine flu after it had “already become a pandemic.” Again, that simply isn’t the case. When Obama addressed the nation about swine flu, or H1N1, in April 2009, the disease was just starting to spread. It wouldn’t be until June 2009 that the swine flu would be declared a pandemic.

The swine flu pandemic spread quickly across the United States starting in April 2009. There were approximately 60 million cases over the course of the following year, which resulted in nearly 275,000 hospitalizations and more than 12,000 deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a detailed timeline of this pandemic on its website. It shows that the CDC first activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on April 22, 2009. At the time, there were only two confirmed cases in the United States. On April 25, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern, and the following day the Obama administration did the same. At that time, there were about 20 confirmed cases.

Despite the CDC’s efforts, the swine flu continued to spread. Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of health and human services, renewed the emergency declaration on July 24, 2009, and then again on Oct. 1, 2009. On Oct. 24, 2009, Obama declared a national emergency that gave officials more resources to fight the pandemic.

The Associated Press reported:
President Barack Obama has declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect noninfected patients.

The declaration, signed Friday night and announced Saturday, comes with the disease more prevalent than ever in the country and production delays undercutting the government’s initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses of the vaccine could be available by mid-October.
[…]
On April 26, the administration declared swine flu a public health emergency, allowing the shipment of roughly 12 million doses of flu-fighting medications from a federal stockpile to states in case they eventually needed them. At the time, there were 20 confirmed cases in the U.S. of people recovering easily. There was no vaccine against swine flu, but the CDC had taken the initial step necessary for producing one.

“As a nation, we have prepared at all levels of government, and as individuals and communities, taking unprecedented steps to counter the emerging pandemic,” Obama wrote in Saturday’s declaration.

In sum, the PJ Media article claimed that Obama “waited” until millions of people were infected with H1N1 before he declared an “emergency.” But that isn’t the case. The Obama administration started to address H1N1 just as the disease emerged in April 2009. A public health emergency was declared on April 26, 2009, when there were about 20 confirmed cases in the United States. The Obama administration renewed this declaration twice in the ensuing months before declaring a national emergency in October 2009.

Washington Post: “Trump’s obsession with numbers — both publicly and privately — has dominated and shaped the administration’s response to the coronavirus, as advisers and public health experts try to placate a leader who largely views the global pandemic through the political lens of how the statistics reflect on his presidency and hopes for reelection.

“Privately, administration officials are trying to get Trump more comfortable with the idea of an inevitable rise in the number of coronavirus cases — in part by explaining to him that a higher number of cases overall could potentially result in a lower mortality rate. Sharing the growing number of cases might also demonstrate that many of those who test positive are asymptomatic or only have mild symptoms…Trump is increasingly coming to accept that the number of individuals who have tested positive for the virus is going to rise, even though he’s not happy about it, the official added.”

Right now the way the statistics are going this may be the most overhyped pandemic in history.

H1N1 was far more infectious, so was Ebola, as is the flu. H1N1 and Ebola was far more deadly also.

Yet for this epidemic, the stock market took a dive, sporks leagues stopped playing and gathering of more than 500 people were banned.

This may very well be known as the great panic of 2020.

On Tuesday China has reported just 19 new cases. Even though you have to take anything the Chinese say with a graIn of salt if that number is anywhere near 19 then coronavirus in China has peaked and they are on the downside of the Farr curve.

This also means Italy and the rest of Europe should be at or near their peak. If true we should see a reduction of new cases reported.

In the US (due to proactive action) that curve may be flatten out, if we are not at the peak we soon will be. However, the wildcard is still lack of test kits to confirm the infection rate so I would expect the number of confirm cases to jump as these test kits become more widely available.

And this is important to note, by the time these test kits are deployed we may have already reached our peak and we are now on the downside.

So stay calm, take sensible precautions. Spring is around the corner for the northern hemisphere and with it, the end the flu season and hopefully the coronavirus season also.

I don't think the US will have to. As I said, staying calm and taking sensible precautions goes a long way.

All epidemics have a natural progression as describe by Farr's law. China is ahead of the US in that progression so is Europe.

Sooner or later the response to the epidemic will end it. Being natural immunity built up in the population or whether climate and social distancing limits the opportunity for infection.

Right now the idea to flatten the curve where the US may peak out. Hopefully within the next two weeks.

I never said they were. But why only Europe?

because that's where most of the infected are coming from at this point - europe. looked at italy lately? geezus, you're fucking "alky" stupid.

anyway, why do YOU insist on getting as many Americans killed as possible just so you can blame it on Trump, PEDERAST???

Commonsense said...

Well it's not only Europe it's China, South Korea too but the epidemic is waning in those countries.

There is no evidence the epidemic is waning in Europe. It's probably at or nearing it's peak.

In Italy a bureaucrat is making decisions which elderly Italian lives or dies. Ain't socialized medicine grand?

Because they are single payer socialized country. Socialist governments always tries to do healthcare on the cheap so they only build and staff for the day to day, They never build in excess capacity.

So when an emergency to natural disaster strikes, they have to decide who gets treated and who dies.

lottery = rationing.

rationing is inevitable when you socialize medicine. and it results in the 'almost' equal distribution of misery.

i say 'almost' because the commie scumbags like bernie who want to run this fucking hell on earth always exempt themselves from the horror they wish to impose on others.

"First described in April 2009, the virus appeared to be a new strain of H1N1 which resulted when a previous triple reassortment of bird, swine and human flu viruses further combined with a Eurasian pig flu virus, leading to the term "swine flu"."

Obimbo the lost years
"On October 24, 2009, President Barack Obama declared Swine Flu a national emergency"

ouch. 12,500 Americans Died.

"CDC estimates that between 41 million and 84 million cases of 2009 H1N1 occurred between April 2009 and January 16, 2010," the agency said in a statement. Usually the CDC goes with a middle number, which it puts at about 57 million people infected."

And when Did the Great One act?
