These drugs have had promising success in testing so far
The key is that these drugs are already approved and there is very little red tape involved. These drugs have been tested on the coronavirus with what appears to be fairly encouraging success. Obviously we will not know until they are being administered en masse how they will actually work, but it's better than sitting on our hands waiting for new drugs that might take 12-18 months to get here.
A peer-reviewed study showed that medicine developed to treat malaria wiped out the coronavirus in 100% of patients treated. It’s only the second time that medicine has successfully treated a virus.Take it all with a grain of salt, but be hopeful. In Japan, testing has shown that existing drugs have been able to "cure" people, by making them virus free in approximately four days. That would indeed be great news for the entire world and specifically for Americans...
or at least those Americans not rooting for us to fail.

Chloroquine has the potential to practically eliminate all fatales from this disease and make hospitalizations unnecessary.
That in turn will reduce the need for social distancing, quarantines and ICU beds.

This will also lead to shorter hospitalizations or no hospitalizations at all if it lives up to its promise.

GOP Senator Dumped Stock Before Coronavirus Crisis
March 19, 2020 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 230 Comments
ProPublica: “Soon after he offered public assurances that the government was ready to battle the coronavirus, the powerful chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Richard Burr, sold off a significant percentage of his stocks, unloading between $582,029 and $1.56 million of his holdings on Feb. 13 in 29 separate transactions.
“As the head of the intelligence committee, Burr, a North Carolina Republican, has access to the government’s most highly classified information about threats to America’s security. His committee was receiving daily coronavirus briefings around this time, according to a Reuters story.
“A week after Burr’s sales, the stock market began a sharp decline and has lost about 30% since.
“On Thursday, Burr came under fire after NPR obtained a secret recording from Feb. 27, in which the lawmaker gave a VIP group at an exclusive social club a much more dire preview of the economic impact of the coronavirus than what he had told the public.”

Gimme some gubment healthcare
In Italy, such factors are already being considered and doctors are apparently making decisions about who should live and who should die.
One document from Northern Italy argues: "The criteria for access to intensive therapy in cases of emergency must include age of less than 80 or a score on the Charlson comorbidity Index [which indicates how many other medical conditions the patient has] of less than five".

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/3/16/21173766/coronavirus-covid-19-us-cases-health-care-system
And yet, Italy still has more hospital beds per capita and doctors per capita than the United States, according to OECD and World Bank estimates. As experts worry whether Italy shows a glimpse of what’s to come in America, it’s worth remembering their health system still had a bigger capacity to handle a surge in patients than the US system currently does.
Last week the voices in your head claimed ICU beds per capita, still haven’t proven that fatty
One encouraging sign for the United States is our high number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds per person. The density of ICU beds is a significant indicator of coronavirus preparedness because ICU beds are typically equipped with ventilator machines, which are lifesaving in cases of respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19. Even compared with similarly wealthy countries, the number of ICU beds per person in the United States is exceptionally high.
The next Pandemic will require the same response as this one diring Biden's Term, right?.

Trump Falsely Claimed Virus Drugs Were Nearly Ready
March 19, 2020 at 7:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 150 Comments
“For about 20 minutes on Thursday, President Trump undermined six decades of dogma on the development of safe and effective drugs,” STAT reports.
“Trump, addressing a nation under shelter and quarantine from the coronavirus pandemic, said a new drug for Covid-19, yet to be proved safe and effective, was now ‘approved or very close to approved.’ Another, also not approved for coronavirus, would be ‘available almost immediately,’ in part because using it is ‘not going to kill anybody.'
“Then, minutes later, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Stephen Hahn, took the dais in the White House briefing room and delicately walked back each one of Trump’s statements.

“Will a country that is still bitter about bailing out banks and airlines in the last financial crisis (THE BIG BOYS) be ready to bail out ramen-yas, pupuserias, vegan sandwich counters, dosa vendors and natural wine bars? Newsom Orders All Californians to Stay Home

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued an immediate order for all Californians to stay home to help stop an anticipated surge in coronavirus cases, CBS San Francisco reports.
OVERREACTION, OR NECESSARY? Note 8:32 PM
Italy does not have a system of primary care doctors and specialist outside the hospitals.
So when a Italian gets sick he goes to the hospital where in America you go to your primary care physician or a clinic and then go home to recover.
That's why they have more hospital beds per capita but they have less doctors and ICU beds per capita.
This warehousing of the sick is exactly the wrong approach in an epidemic. You want to treat as many people as possible at home to isolate the sick, reserving hospital for life threading conditions.
OVERREACTION, OR NECESSARY?
LA county closed the liquor stores but left the marijuana dispensaries open calling them essential medical infrastructure.
These politicians in California are not serious people.
Another, also not approved for coronavirus, would be ‘available almost immediately,’ in part because using it is ‘not going to kill anybody.'
There is absolutely no reason not to use Chloroquine for treating the Chinese virus now. Just because the FDA hasn't given their blessing doesn't mean you can't use them. Doctors prescribe drugs for off-label purposes all the time. And there is enough evidence to indicate this drug is highly effective.
It would the epitome of stupidity to wait on the FDA. This drug has already been approved for other uses and side effects and interactions are well known.

Poll: Majority of Americans now approve of Trump's coronavirus management
A majority of Americans now approve of President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new survey, as the administration has issued stricter federal guidelines in recent days and the president has adopted a more public-facing role in combating the disease.
An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday reports that 55 percent of respondents approve of Trump's management of the public health crisis, while 43 percent disapprove. The latest figures represent a boost in the president's rating from the previous iteration of the survey, published one week ago, which showed only 43 percent approval for Trump and 54 percent disapproval.
Guess the ABC News/Ipsos poll is another one James thinks should be removed from the RCP average.

Rethinking the Coronavirus Shutdown
No society can safeguard public health for long at the cost of its economic health.
Financial markets paused their slide Thursday, but no one should think this rolling economic calamity is over. If this government-ordered shutdown continues for much more than another week or two, the human cost of job losses and bankruptcies will exceed what most Americans imagine. This won’t be popular to read in some quarters, but federal and state officials need to start adjusting their anti-virus strategy now to avoid an economic recession that will dwarf the harm from 2008-2009.
I said about a week ago the government has about four weeks before the people start rebelling against the lock down. Given the draconian measure states like California and Pennsylvania has put in, that may have been an optimistic assessment.
Well, again your opinion Dr Cramps will be ignored ....Fuck anyone who gets sick because you think the economy and money is more important.....just Like Burr who sold out the country to profit!!!!!!!

Trump Asks States to Keep Quiet About Jobless Figures

“The Trump administration asked states to abstain from releasing unemployment-claims figures prior to the publication of a national compilation of weekly U.S. jobless claims,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The official cited an email sent on Wednesday from Gay Gilbert, an administrator at the U.S. Labor Department. The message, sent as states across the nation started reporting surges in claims tied to the coronavirus pandemic, said jobless claims are closely watched by policy makers and financial markets during a time of fast-changing economic conditions. The emailed message asked states to keep the numbers embargoed until the national claims figures are released each Thursday.”

Next up was Stacey Abrams, a former state House leader whose defeat in 2018 Georgia governor’s race remains disputed by many in the party.”
“Other popular suggestions included Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and Representative Val Demings of Florida. The Democrats interviewed also proposed seven other women, including Govs. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico.”

We Can’t Let Coronavirus Postpone Elections

Jon Meacham: “It will be tempting for leaders in those states and others to postpone their primaries. Instead, in this hour of crisis, state officials — understandably scrambling to secure their people — should do all they can to hold their elections as soon as possible. The legitimacy of the eventual Democratic nominee could depend on it.”
“History is on the side of proceeding in times of uncertainty. There’s something in the American character that has long insisted on pressing ahead with democracy’s fundamental task: the casting of ballots and the choosing of leaders. In addition to the Lincoln example, historians know that James Madison was re-elected amid the War of 1812; the midterm elections of 1814 took place not long after the British had invaded Washington; the 1918 balloting occurred despite the ravages of the Spanish flu; 1932 went forward in the face of the Great Depression; and Franklin Roosevelt was re-elected in 1944, during World War II. Even 9/11 delayed the New York City mayoral election only by a matter of weeks.”

Trump Is a Menace to Public Health
March 20, 2020 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 152 Comments
Adam Serwer: “I don’t mean that I disagree with him on policy, although I do. I don’t mean that I abhor the president’s expressed bigotry toward religious and ethnic minorities, although that is also true. I am not referring to Donald Trump’s efforts to corrupt the Justice Department, shield his criminal associates from legal peril, or funnel taxpayer money to his tacky hotels and golf courses, although all of these things are reason enough to oppose the president.”
“What I am referring to is the fact that, soon after the coronavirus outbreak emerged in China, the rest of the world began to regard it as a threat to public health, while Trump has seen it as a public-relations problem. Trump’s primary method of dealing with public-relations problems is to exert the full force of the authoritarian cult of personality that surrounds him to deny that a problem even exists. This approach has paid political dividends for the Republican Party, in the form of judicial appointments, tax cuts for the wealthy, and a rapid erosion of the rule of law. But applied to the deadly pandemic now sweeping the planet, all it has done is exacerbate the inevitable public-health crisis, while leaving both the federal government and the entire swath of the country that hangs on his every word unprepared for the catastrophe now unfolding in the United States. The cardinal belief of Trumpism is that loyalty to Trump is loyalty to the country, and that equation leaves no room for the public interest.”
“Neither the tide of pestilence sweeping the nation nor the economic calamity that will follow was inevitable. They are the predictable outcomes of the president’s authoritarian instincts, his obvious incompetence, and the propaganda apparatus that has shielded him from accountability by ensuring that the public is blinded to his role in the scale of this disaster.”

Burr Asks for Review of his Stock Sales

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) told the Washington Post that he has asked Senate Ethics Committee for review of his recent stock sales, made after he had private briefings on the coronavirus pandemic.
Burr said he relied solely on public news reports on the sales
I am basing this on a report I just heard on Public Radio:
The evidence seems to be that most governments are still far behind the curve necessary for slowing the spread of this virus, even as they initiate ever more severe (draconian) attempts at meeting the challenge.
Too little too late everywhere! The leadership of the West was caught unawares, despite the fact that the evidence was already available.
The government of the USA is finally doing what it should already have been doing in mid January or sooner.
Italy has now surpassed China in number of deaths despite the fact that China's population is far, far larger.
The Chinese dictatorially enforced social distancing. The West has more difficulty doing that.
French president: "We are at war. Each us us MUST limit the number of people we are in contact with each day."
The West has been far too slow in doing this, and it is probably not an exaggeration to say that disasters are facing us.
CNN calls upon jeff spicoli to solve the coronavirus crisis:

Draconian total social distancing is apparently the only answer and it may have to go on for a VERY long time, causing UNIMAGINABLE economic problems.
Test, test, test, and isolate is the only answer.
And we are far behind in testing.
Mexico and numerous other countries are not taking this seriously, and we will see how that plays out.

It’s been 10 days, and hospitals are fine.
Love President Trumps daily updates, a lot of people are seeing his unfiltered leadership and deranged press coverage.

Imagine if we had used the advice from W.H.O, and "experts" cited in VOX, Buzzfeed and others.
And more than likely spammed here by the POS waterboy "pastor", though, as most, I usually skim over his crap.
Most drugs can be lethal if taken improperly. Chloroquine included. And the good thing is that it's not some unknown experimental drug. It's already on the market.

Trump just hammered that NBC reporter. Oof.
Some of these reporters being obnoxious as hell.
Trump just ended his press conference on coronavirus by saying that his administration inherited a broken system which they are now getting fixed. He did not wait for the obvious question:
"Mr. President, you say you inherited 'a broken system.' Why haven't you fixed it, Sir, during the three years you have been in the White House?"
At today’s briefing by the coronavirus task force, Peter Alexander of NBC News asked President Trump:
NBC NEWS: What do you say to Americans that are scared?
TRUMP: I say you’re a terrible reporter.
It took 6 days and finally Denny agrees the problem.is China.
Can we convert James?
James, do you agree with Biden that China is not a threat to the US?

Trump responds to question about coronavirus fears by bashing the media
HuffPost US Mar 20th 2020 1:51PM
President Donald Trump lambasted an NBC reporter who asked what he would say to Americans who are fearful of the coronavirus pandemic, calling the question “nasty” and telling the reporter he should be “ashamed.”
On Friday, Trump addressed the nation in a press briefing about COVID-19 and the administration’s efforts to stop its spread.
Upon opening the floor for questions, NBC’s Peter Alexander asked the president, “What do you say to Americans who are watching you right now who are scared?”
“I say that you are a terrible reporter, that’s what I say. It’s a very nasty question. It’s a very bad signal that you’re putting out to the American people,” Trump responded. “The American people are looking for answers and looking for hope. You’re doing sensationalism.”
He then criticized NBC and Comcast, telling Alexander, “You might want to get back to reporting” and “You ought to be ashamed of yourself.” (NBC is a subsidiary of Comcast.)

NBC's @PeterAlexander asks Trump what he'd say to Americans who are frightened.
Trump goes on rant against Alexander, says he asked a "nasty question," calls him a "terrible reporter" and attacks NBC and Comcast.
Moments later, another reporter asked the question again and Trump offered a more measured response:
“My message to the American people is that there is a very low incidence of death ― you understand that ― and we’re going to come through this stronger than ever before,” he said.
“If you happen to get it, it is highly unlikely ― it’s looking like it’s getting to a number that is much smaller than people originally thought in terms of the ultimate problem, which would be death. My message to the American people is number one, you’ve done an incredible job. ... There is tremendous hope.”
“The drug touted by the President Trump as a possible line of treatment against the coronavirus comes with severe warnings in China and can kill in dosages as little as two grams,” Bloomberg reports
Chloroquine Phosphate
James, please point to the section where it says Chloroquine causes death.
Then again we maybe shouldn't buy any drug made in China.
lol@jane
LOL, Commensa.
First, I refer you to what Dr. Fauci said in terms of how effective "the drug touted by Trump" could be or not be, and how much if any toxicity it might have. He takes the view that it might very well not be dangerous, but should be tested appropriately.
Second, I refer you to what the Chinese themselves said:
“China, where the deadly pathogen first emerged in December, recommended the decades-old malaria drug chloroquine to treat infected patients in guidelines issued in February after seeing encouraging results in clinical trials. But within days, it cautioned doctors and health officials about the drug’s lethal side effects and rolled back its usage.”
You walked into that one, Commensa!
lol@KansasDim
First, I refer you to what Dr. Fauci said in terms of how effective "the drug touted by Trump" could be or not be, and how much if any toxicity it might have.
The preliminary study in France it was 100% effective. That was first study on record.
Dr. Fauci says the drug is not toxic (or at least it's not as toxic as any other drug). In fact, it's so safe one of it's on-label uses is as a prophylactic.
The Chinese also said the virus was imported by US soldiers. I don't believe anything the Chinese say.
James you fell for a disinformation campaign by the Chinese and then you say I walked into it. 😂😂😂
Amusing that 2 incompetents are arguing over a subject neither of them have a modicum of intellect on.....especially Dr Cramps who thinks trump is a god and his word is gold.......BWAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! IBTW....if there is a france study with 100% effectively doncha think Fauci would have mentioned it???????
Fauci did NOT declare the drug safe. He made it clear that a drug that is not toxic in treating one type of disease COULD be toxic when used with another.
from BUSINESS INSIDER:
Trump undercuts his top infectious disease expert on whether an unapproved treatment for coronavirus is safe, a day after the FDA said it had not yet been approved
Kayla Epstein 2 hours ago Trump and Fauci March 20
Trump has boosted the drug chloroquine, which is used to treat malaria, as a potential treatment for COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus.
The FDA has not yet approved it as a reatment, leading to confusion about whether or not the drug can be used.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, his top infectious disease expert, stressed the need for clinical study of chloroquine's use for COVID-19 on Friday.
Trump jumped in shortly after and said he was a "big fan" of using chloroquine and that that he "comes from a very positive school when it comes to in particular one of these drugs."
He did acknowledge the need to "see how it works out."
Fauci repeatedly had to stress the need for clinical testing, and the lack of definitive proof for the treatment, during the briefing.
President Trump undermined his own top infectious disease expert at a Friday White House briefing on the question of whether chloroquine, a drug that has been known to treat malaria but has not yet been rigorously tested and approved for treating the coronavirus, could be used to combat the new disease.
Some doctors hope that chloroquine could be an effective treatment for COVID-19, and its use against the disease was currently being studied. Doctors can technically prescribe it as a treatment, since it is approved for treating other ailments, but it has not yet been approved for this use.
At a separate briefing the day before, Trump had said that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat the coronavirus. But shortly after, the FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn contradicted Trump, saying that the FDA would need to determine that in a clinical trial. A spokesman for the FDA told Bloomberg News that the drug had not yet been approved for COVID-19 patients.
With confusion about the drugs' efficacy at treating coronavirus swirling and public demand spiking, reporters asked for clarification at Friday's White House briefing about whether the drugs were a known treatment for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, responded bluntly that, "The answer is no, and the evidence that you're talking about...is anecdotal evidence."
"We're trying to strike a balance between making something with a potential of an effect to the American people available at the same time that we do it under the auspices of a protocol that would give us information to determine if it's truly safe and truly effective," Fauci said. "But the information that you're referring to specifically is anecdotal, it was not done in a controlled clinical trial. So you really can't make any definitive statement about it."
But Trump continued to promote the potential treatment as he did on Thursday, jumping in immediately after Fauci finished speaking to add that he was a "big fan" of chloroquine.
Trump acknowledged Fauci's assessment that "it's early" but continued, "I've seen things that are impressive and we'll see, we're going to know so we're going to know soon, including safety, but, you know, when you get that safety this has been prescribed for many years for people to combat malaria, which was a big problem and it's very effective it's a strong. It's a strong drug, so we'll see."
"I will say that I am a man that comes from a very positive school when it comes to in particular one of these drugs and we'll see how it works out," he said later in the press conference.
After another round of questions about the drugs, Fauci once again returned to the podium, this time striking a more conciliatory tone with the president but still emphasising the need for clinical testing.
"Fundamentally, I think it probably is going to be safe, but I like to prove things first, so it really is a question of not a lot of difference," Fauci said. "It's the hope that will work, versus proving that it will work."

Fauci did not say the drug would be safe. He said, AS I SAID, he "thought" it probably is going to be safe.
I myself wish it could be safe and effective in helping us out of this disaster we now find ourselves in. But wishing and hoping may not make it safe and effective.
Yep, Commensa. Like so often, you walked right into it.😂😂😂

Actually not.
The entire context is left out and the entire question which was a supposed "follow-up" after the president had answer the originals is not shown in its entirety. Typical of political_lire.
It occurred 6 minutes into questions and after the President had already answered Peter's questions and called on another reporter. Peter then talked over the called on reporter. You can listen for yourself.
Questions start at around 33:30 and Peter Alexander's talked about exchange starts a little before 40:00.
The president is working hard for the American people and some in the press are working hard against the president and apparently for the Chinese. Like political_lire and their hobbyist waterboy.

Imagine what our country looks like after being seeded with that kind of infection.
Until 8 days ago China Joe attacked the travel bans. Still won’t say he supports.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, responded bluntly that, "The answer is no, and the evidence that you're talking about...is anecdotal evidence."
He is wrong in this, the French study was a scientific study now in peer review it had a control group, a group with chloroquine itself and a group with chloroquine in combination with another drug.
He may of course comment in peer review but it is certainly not anecdotal.

The thing is you don't want people dying that you could have saved while testing to "prove that it will work".
As I said, the drug is safe enough to use as a prophylactic. By all means collect the data but don't wait until you're absolutely sure. Perfect is the enemy of good.

This clip is deceptively edited. The blow up was the result of a reporter challenging Trump's statement that he was hopeful about the efficacy of a new drug. That's what launched this. The public would know more if the media showed the full clip.

Now there is price gouging on surgical masks.....I bet cramps applauds!!!!!
Not showing full exchange was deceptively editing which Axios is doing.
Especially since Trump had already answered his questions and had called on another reporter. Talking over someone out of turn is not a fair question. Editorializing and inserting bias is not a reporters job.
Trump was respectful in answering the initial questions from the reporter and had moved to the next reporter.
Trump may have handled it better but working 20 hour days for as long as he has takes its toll. And the press is acting like agents for the Chinese.

French study finds anti-malarial and antibiotic combo could reduce COVID-19 duration
A new study whose results were published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents has found early evidence that the combination of hydroxychloroquine, a popular anti-malaria drug known under the trade name Plaqenuil, and antibiotic azithromycin (aka Zithromax or Azithrocin) could be especially effective in treating the COVID-19 coronavirus and reducing the duration of the virus in patients.
The researchers performed a study on 30 confirmed COVID-19 patients, treating each with either hydroxychloroquine on its own, a combination of the medicine with the antibiotic, as well as a control group that received neither. The study was conducted after reports from treatment of Chinese patients indicated that this particular combo had efficacy in shortening the duration of infection in patients.
The patient mix included in the study included six who showed no symptoms whatsoever, as well as 22 who had symptoms in their upper respiratory tract (things like sneezing, headaches and sore throats, and eight who showed lower respiratory tract symptoms (mostly coughing). 20 of the 30 participants in the study received treatment, and the results showed that while hydroxycholoroquine was effective on its own as a treatment, when combined with azithromycin it was even more effective, and by a significant margin.
