So does anyone recall how many different things closed back in 2009 during the Swine flu pandemic?
Here are some numbers for comparison purposes:
- CDC estimates that between 43 million and 89 million cases of 2009 H1N1 occurred
- CDC estimates that between about 195,000 and 403,000 H1N1-related hospitalizations occurred
- CDC estimates that between about 8,870 and 18,300 2009 H1N1-related deaths occurred
Our Government and many medical experts at the time suggested that the Swine flu was no worse than any other seasonal flu. They recommended people stay home for an extended time if they caught the flu, but almost nothing closed.
What's the difference here? Anyone have an explanation?

I have been thinking along with you on.
Has the modern world social media led to a great exaggerations of the risks. ??????
A bad flu can cause death. Especially among older adults.
Will the President close his golf courses because of the Coronavirus?

SOME ANGRY WORDS HERE:
Trump Voters Got Exactly What They Voted For
March 12, 2020 at 10:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 62 Comments
Julia Ioffe:
“Some 63 million Americans voted for a man who wanted to smash the system to smithereens, either because they felt it wasn’t doing enough for them or because breaking glass just feels so primitively satisfying. Or maybe it’s because the Republican Party has been peddling a dystopian anarchistic anti-government pipe dream to them for the last four decades. Now, it turns out, a functioning government is a good thing to have when a global pandemic arrives on your shores. It turns out that maybe reforming an imperfect system is wiser than just taking a sledgehammer to it, better to trust people who have dedicated their lives to being public servants than trashing them in favor of a one-man, megalomaniacal savior, better to have a functioning system than dancing on its rubble while crowing about the death of the ‘deep state’—or ‘the political establishment.'”
“To those 63 million Americans, I say this: you wanted to smash the system and you got what you wanted—in spades. Now we will all have to pay the price.”

Will Coronavirus Shake Up the Political Stasis?
March 12, 2020 at 9:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 164 Comments
Amy Walter: “The one constant in these last three and a half years has been chaos. Almost every week, there is an event, issue or moment that looks as if it may upend our current political stasis or rattle the economy. But so far, nothing, not a government shutdown, nor impeachment, nor a tempestuous tweet, has been enough to spook the markets or alter opinions of this president. Meanwhile, our media cycle and attention spans have gotten shorter and shorter, which only serves to lessen their long-term repercussions.
“Coronavirus, however, may be our first truly disruptive event in this so-called disruptive era.”
Wall Street Journal: “Coronavirus has challenged Mr. Trump’s unusual leadership style—blunt, improvisational and shoot-from-the-hip—like no other issue to confront his administration.”

Trump’s Go-It Alone Approach Tested by Pandemic
March 12, 2020 at 9:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 279 Comments
“As a viral pandemic has spread across continents with a severity and deadliness that world leaders say demands a global response, President Trump has increasingly turned inward,” the Washington Post reports.
“He has imposed travel restrictions on one-fourth of the world’s population while criticizing other nations' response efforts, refused to meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, attacked his handpicked Fed chairman and defied the warnings of his own public health experts.
“His handling of the crisis, including a surprise decision to restrict travel from Europe, is drawing criticism both at home and abroad as leaders warn that Trump’s go-it-alone approach is doing harm to an already fraught situation.”

Trump Is Concerned About Contracting Coronavirus
March 12, 2020 at 6:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 179 Comments
A source close to Donald Trump said the President is telling people close to him that he is indeed concerned about coming into contact with people who have contracted the coronavirus, including the Brazilian official who tested positive after coming face-to-face with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, CNN reports.
Vox notes that Trump is breaking his own agency’s coronavirus guidelines by not self-quarantining.

Bonus Quote of the Day
March 12, 2020 at 6:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 234 Comments
“The crisis we face from the coronavirus is on a scale of a major war, and we must act accordingly. The number of casualties may actually be even higher than what the armed forces experienced in World War II. In other words, we have a major, major crisis and we must act accordingly.”
— Sen. Bernie Sanders, quoted by Politico.
A JetBlue passenger learns, in the air, that he has the virus.
A passenger on a JetBlue flight from New York to West Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday night learned midair that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, raising questions about possible widespread exposure.
The passenger, who had previously been tested for the virus and was awaiting results, got a notification toward the end of the flight that the test had come back positive, JetBlue said on Thursday. He was overheard talking about it, and the flight crew quickly notified health officials on the ground.
The flight, which departed from Kennedy International Airport with 114 people on board, landed at Palm Beach International Airport around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Medical workers rushed to the airport shortly after, officials said.
“JetBlue had no prior indication that this customer had or may have had coronavirus,” the airline said in a statement. Both airports and the airplane were being cleaned.
The CDC in its updated estimate of figures for the swine flu reported that, in total,
57 million AMERICANS had been sickened,
257,000 had been hospitalised and
11,690 people had died in the USA
(including 1,180 children)
due to swine flu from April through to mid-January.
The Spanish flu of 1918 killed an estimated
675,000 Americans
out of a staggering 20 to 50 million people worldwide.
Trump Ad-Libbed In Oval Office Address
March 12, 2020 at 8:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 355 Comments
“In the most scripted of presidential settings, a prime-time televised address to the nation, President Trump decided to ad-lib — and his errors
triggered a market meltdown,
panicked travelers overseas and
crystallized for his critics just how dangerously he has fumbled his management of the coronavirus,” the Washington Post reports.
“Even Trump —
a man practically allergic to admitting mistakes —
knew he’d screwed up by declaring Wednesday night that his ban on travel from Europe would include cargo and trade,
and acknowledged as much to aides in the Oval Office as soon as he’d finished speaking.
“Futures for the Dow Jones industrial average fell in real time with virtually each word Trump uttered.”
“Trump — who believed that by giving the speech he would appear in command and that his remarks would reassure financial markets and the country — was in ‘an unusually foul mood’ and sounded at times ‘apoplectic’ on Thursday as he watched stocks tumble and digested widespread criticism of his speech.”
The Task Force Was Kept Out of Trump’s Oval Office Address
March 12, 2020 at 10:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 72 Comments
Wall Street Journal:
“[The address] was written largely
by Stephen Miller,
the president’s senior policy adviser, and
by Jared Kushner,
the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser,
and overseen
by staff secretary Derek Lyons.
The three men, all White House staffers since Mr. Trump took office, haven’t been deeply involved in the coronavirus response.
“Mr. Kushner hasn’t attended a single task force meeting, according to one official who has attended each meeting. Many of the officials who have been working on the issue for weeks said they were cut out or ignored during the speech writing.
“The result was a speech that White House officials said hit the correct themes,
but was riddled with errors.”
OH BOY. WHAT A PRESIDENT.
Hmmmm....
It's almost surreal, but I think ol Roger might be on to something. In the age of social media, do risks become exaggerated? That makes as much sense as anything else.
Roger, found the truffle.
Yes, the social media is the plauge.
What's the difference here? Anyone have an explanation?
the difference here is that trump is president, and above all else he must be destroyed. everything else the democrats have tried has failed, and the election is getting closer.
this is March Madness.

A top government official from Australia said that he tested positive for the novel coronavirus, just days after he returned from a meeting with Ivanka Trump and a Justice Department event in Washington that was attended by U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr and acting U.S. Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf.
Peter Dutton, Australia’s home affairs minister, said Friday that he woke up with a fever and sore throat and would be checking into a hospital.
On March 5, Dutton had visited Justice Department headquarters for a news conference about an initiative to fight online sexual exploitation of children. Dutton was one of six government officials who spoke at the presser, including Barr and Wolf.
With counterparts from England, New Zealand and Canada, the officials stood together on a dais for about 45 minutes to discuss the initiative. Given the number of countries involved in the announcement, there were scores of people who attended the gathering.
The group also met that day with White House officials, and Dutton was photographed standing directly next to the president’s daughter and a few feet away from Barr.
Spokespeople for the White House and Barr did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kellyanne Conway, a White House counselor also present at the meeting, confirmed she met with Dutton but said she had not been tested for the virus.

You fucking fat retard
I have said before this will go down in history as the panic of 2020.
That said, we did learn some important lessons.
1. You can't trust the Chinese government to provide accurate information. And since all virus outbreaks seem to originate in China it behooves the US to develop intelligence sources within the Chinese medical community to detect any virus outbreak long before the Chinese government gets around to informing the world.
2. Control of international borders and ports of entry is absolutely essential to slowing the spread of a virus outbreak. The EU's open borders policy is chiefly responsible for spreading the virus like wildfire in Europe. On this the Trump administration made the correct call both times.
3. The US needs to bring back essential pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing back from China. Never again should the US be hostage to a hostile government and potential adversary.
4. Finally the hype and hysterical news coverage should be ignored. The agenda driven coverage has lead to unnecessary panic. In this social media has amplified this false and misleading coverage. Browsing the coverage we found too many "experts" making wild guesses and predictions. The only solution here is to use one's common sense. If a claim sounds too wild to be true then it generally is.
BTW fatty info graphic means, there’s a picture so you will understand

no way. thanks to their short-sightedness and willingness to ignore the law of unintended consequences, the left has put themselves into a position where they've aborted so many potential voters (the roe effect) over the past 40+ years, they must import them to maintain power. and if American citizens must die in order for them to achieve this goal then so be it.

Trump Blocks Use of Medicaid to Respond to Crisis
March 13, 2020 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 8 Comments
“Despite mounting pleas from California and other states, the Trump administration isn’t allowing states to use Medicaid more freely to respond to the coronavirus crisis by expanding medical services,” the Los Angeles Times reports.
“In previous emergencies, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina and the H1N1 flu outbreak, both Republican and Democratic administrations loosened Medicaid rules to empower states to meet surging needs.”
“But months into the current global disease outbreak, the White House and senior federal health officials haven’t taken the necessary steps to give states simple pathways to fully leverage the mammoth safety net program to prevent a wider epidemic.”

The Worst-Case Estimate for U.S. Coronavirus Deaths
March 13, 2020 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 29 Comments
New York Times: “Between 160 million and 214 million people in the U.S. could be infected over the course of the epidemic, according to one projection. That could last months or even over a year, with infections concentrated in shorter periods, staggered across time in different communities, experts said. As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million people could die.”
“And, the calculations based on the C.D.C.’s scenarios suggested, 2.4 million to 21 million people in the U.S. could require hospitalization, potentially crushing the nation’s medical system, which has only about 925,000 staffed hospital beds. Fewer than a tenth of those are for people who are critically ill.”

Trump Struggles to Unify a Nation on Edge
March 13, 2020 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 106 Comments
New York Times: “After feeling besieged by enemies for three years, Mr. Trump and some of his advisers view so many issues through the lens of political warfare — assuming that criticism is all about point scoring — that it has become hard to see what is real and what is not, according to people around the president. Even when others with Mr. Trump’s best interests at heart disagree, they find it hard to penetrate what they see as the bubble around him.
“Among the advisers who share the president’s more jaundiced view is his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who considers the problem more about public psychology than a health reality, according to people who have spoken with him. Mr. Kushner has gotten more involved in the response in recent days, according to three White House advisers. A person close to Mr. Kushner said his views were being misinterpreted, and that he was focused on trying to find answers to the most immediate measures to mitigate the virus’s spread.”
