Trump's approval on response rising..

Poll: Majority of Americans now approve of Trump’s coronavirus management
An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday reports that 55 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s management of the public health crisis, while 43 percent disapprove. The latest figures represent a boost in the president’s rating from the previous iteration of the survey, published one week ago, which showed only 43 percent approval for Trump and 54 percent disapproval.

This represents quite a few things of things. The first and most obvious is that the President does appear to be on top of things. While some may still feel that the Federal Government was late to the Party, that particular opinion simply does not argue out very well. Whatever issues people pretend to have with the CDC, the reality is that nobody is a soothsayer, nobody can be prepared for everything, and responses like this do not take place overnight (like they might on television or a movie). Moreover, the President was realistically taking action back in early January with the international travel ban that most of his critics demanded was short sighted, unnecessary, and even racist.

The second thing this represents is that people simply tend to rally around their leaders at times of crisis. Many of us on the blog remember that this group started from an old Yahoo message thread called Bush Soars in the Polls. The reaction after 9-11 was for our country to largely put partisanship aside, back the President, and that showed with Bush approvals into the high 80's and even in one case into the 90s.  Now it's unlikely that Trump will reach numbers like that, but the truth is that there are going to be people who are willing to toss aside politics for the good of the nation and provide support for the only national leader we have.

The last thing that this represents is the fact that up until this point, the exponential increase in fatalities has not taken place. While naysayers might point to a larger increase in known cases, the real test of this medical crisis will be fatalities. As long as those numbers do not reach into several hundred or even thousands a day,  this will fall short of worst case scenarios that have been pushed by many people. Regardless of how it might end up happening, if the amount of fatalities remain reasonable (within the normal confines of a general seasonal flu or other seasonal virus) will be seen as a success.

Obviously this number can (and will change) if the virus takes hold and we are suddenly seeing  exponential increases in fatalities that starts to show hundreds of deaths a day and overwhelms our hospitals (for real). But for now, as long as things remain fairly linear and the President appears to be doing everything he can, I don't see any reason to see the President's numbers going anywhere but up.

Trump just ended his press conference on coronavirus by saying that his administration inherited a broken system which they are now getting fixed. He did not wait for the obvious question:

"Mr. President, you say you inherited 'a broken system.' Why haven't you fixed it, Sir, during the three years you have been in the White House?"

C.H. Truth said...

well Reverend...

Necessity is the mother of invention. We generally do not fix things that are not necessary to fix or not otherwise been exposed yet. As someone in the software business, there are a ton of bugs out there that are unknown until you happen to run across them in some complicated scenario that is not everyday. Normal QA testing doesn't catch everything.

There are several moving parts and several things in place. Good thing we have a President who understands how to multi-task and handle a variety of things that you would need to do running a multi-billion dollar company.

If this was Dementia Joe, he might forget where he was, and then remember that he is trying to figure out a way to get Hunter a good job out of all of this. He has no experience doing anything other than being in the background of Obama and being one of 100 Senators.

if this was slow joe, hunter would already be sitting on the boards of dozens of drug companies and hospitals.

virus stats would rival that of 0linsky's H1N1, but hunter would be flush.

Congressman Says Country Is Overreacting to Virus
March 20, 2020 at 1:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 29 Comments

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) believes the country is panicked and overreacting to the coronavirus outbreak due to a lack of leadership from both major political parties, the Denver Post reports.

Said Buck: “You don’t shut restaurants down for 30 days.”

He added: “I have no problem with stopping sporting events or things that don’t impact our civil liberties and don’t impact everyday life. Those are things that I think we can suspend for a period of time. But it’s just craziness to shut down businesses or parts of the economy that are absolutely necessary.”

ken buck is exactly correct. and it's noteworthy that the politicians who are the quickest to over react and step right up to the line of martial law are...

...democrats.

ALBANY — In a series of interviews Thursday morning, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said it was inevitable that the state's health care system would be overwhelmed by a coming wave of COVID-19 cases, but he will not impose "martial law."

Illinois Governor to Issue Lockdown Order
March 20, 2020 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 73 Comments

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) plans to issue a “shelter-in-place” order for the entire state starting Saturday, essentially commanding residents to stay in their homes as the officials take drastic measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

As became clear at the Coronavirus task force report that just took place, Trump is resisting declaring a national lock down.

When/if it becomes obvious that such a declaration is an absolute necessity, he will declare it.

Will numerous additional lives be lost meanwhile by his wait and see?

Myballs said...

It's not necessary. Nebraska does not require the same actions as NYC for example. Its best left to the governors.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

It may be that China has effectively stopped the spread.
Where in all the USA have we, so far?

Myballs said...

China is two months ahead of the rest of rhe world. They started in November. We started jan 3rd, same time as italy. We're still in the minimize the spread phase.

And we don't really know if what China is saying it true. It wasn't before.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

I specifically said China "MAY" have stopped the spread.
There seems to be some reason for thinking they actually have succeeded in doing that.

IF so, it would probably because they LOCKED DOWN EVERYTHING.

You may eventually find it necessary to do that even in Nebraska.

IF that is eventually found out, you may be willing to admit that a lot of lives could have been saved by doing it earlier.

A whole lotta mays and ifs in that post.

Trump Lies His Way Through a Pandemic
March 20, 2020 at 3:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 49 Comments

Frank Rich:
“The president who is leading this country into battle cares about no one but himself, continues to lie to Americans daily about the most basic imperatives of a public-health catastrophe, and presides over an administration staffed with incompetent, third-tier bootlickers and grifters. And I am not just talking about Mike Pence, Jared Kushner, and Wilbur Ross. There are now three college seniors serving in White House positions, thanks to a new purge of ostensibly disloyal staffers being conducted by Trump’s former body man, the 29-year-old John McEntee, recently installed as director of the Presidential Personnel Office.”

400,000 dead Americans was a prediction made not by me but by someone else's estimate, and is still being made by some as a worst case scenario.

I have never said that I "hoped" it was true, as you lied. Instead, I have consistently said that I hope we do NOT have MILLIONS of cases of this virus in our country, and that we do NOT
have hundreds of thousands of deaths.

But you will continue to lie, as you always do.

It's not the number of Dead Americans that will be a problem for Trump. I feel pretty sure that number will remain low.

It's the disruption of normal life and economic activity that will be the problem for him if it last too long.

One hint is that panic buying won't stop until life returns to normal.

Trumps has two experts. One that tell him the devastating effects of a pandemic on the healthcare system and one that describes bread and soup lines in a devastating economic depression.

Only one of those experts is in the room.

Dr. Fauci warned that "millions" (not 400,000) of Americans might die.

I hope not. But hoping and wishing are one thing. Realities are sometimes something else.

Since a November a grand total of 219 people has died from the Coronavirus.

correct, abortion has killed 245,000 Babies so far this year.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Stop your incessant lying.

I never "gleefully" spoke of 400,000 possible American deaths nor did I "gleefully" just point out that Dr. Fauci spoke of the possibility of "millions" of American deaths. I consistently said and continue to say that I fervently hope that these devastatingly frightening figures do not prove true.

And I have consistently said that my position on the issue of abortion is similar to that of the United Methodist Church's official position, and that I am opposed to late term abortions.

But as I said before,
you will continue to lie, as you always do.

Commonsense said...

So what's is a late term abortion and other abortions they both destroy a human life. And since a baby can survive outside the womb at 22 weeks, what do you consider a late term abortion.

Also science considers it a unique human life at conception. Are you now anti-science?
