So, as many more states are mulling over a total a total shut down of "non-essential" businesses, the question becomes who decides what is and isn't essential? Certainly many small business owners see their own business and livelihood as "essential". Certainly many employees probably see their jobs and the paycheck that pays their bills as "essential". Who gets to determine which person loses their business, which person loses their job, which person files bankruptcy, which person gets foreclosed on, which person burns through their retirement.
Certainly a $1200 check is not going to save anyone who is actually out of work for any extended amount of time. Even delaying mortgages and or other bills are not going to save people who lose their jobs due to a complete shutdown of economic activity. We may be heading for one of the worst economic quarters in history (after having one of the best economies in decades) simply because of the panic associated with coronavirus. Will it be worth it in the end? Who will people blame for their misfortune? How long will it take to dig ourselves back out of this self-dug hole.

Well, Ch, as I just asked in the thread below, mustn't you assume that Trump is being played for a fool? He's actually taking a lot of this seriously, isn't he. More seriously than you are? So is he actually finally reluctantly listening to real experts, or is he being played for a fool?
Wait until the crops are left in the field.

If not, were you ever planning on telling your readers that you can't?
I actually wonder daily if what the mainstream media is spouting is from China or are their normal DNC talking points. Amazing how in synch they are. All 3 now.

Americans should be given the choice to either:
A) Get a $1000 check from the federal government
B) Get stock tips from Senator Richard Burr & Senator Dianne Feinstein
Are you gleefully rooting for that, Commensa?
No but it's the logical extension of shutting everything down.
If you want to know what I am rooting for, I am rooting for the Economy to return to normal.
I'm rooting for that too. The sooner the better.

"The American people could have used an ethical and responsible Senate Select Committee on Intelligence while the country was harmed by the peddling of the false and dangerous Russia collusion hoax."
https://thefederalist.com/2020/03/20/insider-trading-scandal-is-just-latest-reason-burr-should-be-removed-as-intel-chair/
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr is being criticized by liberals and conservatives due to the news he sold up to $1.6 million in stock after receiving private briefings about the coronavirus but before the stock market began its sharp decline.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., tweeted of the North Carolina Republican: “Burr knew how bad it would be. He told the truth to his wealthy donors, while assuring the public that we were fine. THEN he sold off $1.6 million in stock before the fall. He needs to resign.”
Tucker Carlson told his audience Burr needs to resign and await prosecution if he’s unable to explain his actions. He said if the allegations are true, that Burr has betrayed his country in a time of crisis.
It’s up to the people of North Carolina to decide Burr’s fate. They elected him and are best suited to make that decision. But it’s the job of the Republicans in the Senate to pick chairmen and committee slots. And it is long past time for Burr to step aside as chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Trump and Republican leadership may disagree but I don't.

I have read several commentators who state that, without trusting any and everything Chinese leaders say, there is reason to think that by using severely draconian methods they may have managed to turn the rate of infection around. Not just by separating people, but by enforced TESTING and quarantining and treating of the ill.
The Coming Tsunami of Unemployment Claims

Matthew Yglesias:
“The United States is facing an imminent surge in unemployment insurance claims that threatens to completely swamp the system for claiming and paying benefits.
“The surge is so unprecedented in historical terms that it essentially defies efforts to forecast where the economy may go in the future, and underscores the extent to which the looming coronavirus recession is completely different in its mechanics from the 2008 Great Recession but potentially even more severe in its impact.”

Well Reverend...
Italy shut down their country weeks ago as well, and that didn't turn out nearly as well for them. Spain has shut their country down as well and they are in danger of passing up Iran in deaths.
The truth is that we don't really know how many cases China has or how many casualties. Certainly we would all like to believe that they are telling the truth and that the rate of deaths slowed way down after a few weeks of shutdown. But do we know that for sure?
The bottom line reality is that there a ton of places in this world that have hardly been affected at all by the virus. How do you explain 41 cases and 3 deaths in the Ukraine? How about only 12 deaths in Canada? 283 cases in India?
What did these places do differently?

CHTRUTH SAYS: How do you explain 41 cases and 3 deaths in the Ukraine?

Ukraine ramps up testing for coronavirus, but many cases may remain undetected
Kyiv shuts all but supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, gas stations 211
Foreigners will not be fined for visa overstays during quarantine SECOND COVID-19 death in Ukraine confirmed, total cases grow to 14
With just a handful of the novel coronavirus cases confirmed, Ukraine may seem safer than other countries with COVID-19 outbreaks. However, Ukraine has been dragging behind on testing for the virus.
While other nations test tens of thousands of people daily for COVID-19, Ukraine has tested a total of some 640 people since January. It has confirmed 16 cases so far, and two deaths, while the virus has infected over 218,000 and killed 8,800 people in a pandemic worldwide.
The government says it has been following the World Health Organization’s approach to diagnosing COVID-19, a disease caused by the virus, and increasing its testing capacity. But the reality of testing and diagnosis in Ukraine does not follow any standardized approach.
The reason may be fear.
Some infected patients are afraid to go to the doctor, and some doctors are afraid to examine such patients. This creates additional obstacles both to diagnosing COVID-19 and to assessing the true spread of the virus in Ukraine.
Having recently traveled from Greece and met people who had visited Austria, Kyiv resident Dana Yarovaya was worried she might have COVID-19 after she felt dizzy and started to have a fever. So she called an ambulance and described her symptoms and travel history, since both Greece and Austria have been hit by the coronavirus.
The ambulance told her to see a general practitioner at a state clinic. She called three, but none agreed to come and examine her in person, Yarovaya told the Kyiv Post. One of the doctors told her to take antibiotics, a prescription with which Yarovaya disagreed.
The Ukrainian government’s approach advises doctors to diagnose “suspicion of COVID-19” when a patient both has the symptoms of the disease, such as a fever, and has had close contact with infected people, perhaps during travels.
A sample of mucus from the patient’s nose and throat is then sent to a laboratory for a test to confirm or refute the diagnosis. If the patient has COVID-19, she fills out a form specifying everyone she has recently contacted, and these people are also tested. The patient then receives treatment and is isolated from others.
After being denied treatment by general practitioners, Yarovaya took the initiative and called a state clinic that tests for COVID-19. But she got a surprising response, she said.
“They told me over the phone, ‘You do not have coronavirus’,” Yarovaya said.
After she repeated her story, she was advised to get a chest X-ray.
“It was the most shocking conversation for me that day,” she said.
Yarovaya self-isolated from her husband and three kids and shared her story in an emotional Facebook post, which got 13,000 shares. A Facebook friend then helped her get a test for coronavirus.
Yarovaya tested negative, but decided to remain in self-isolation and test again in two days if she does not get better. She argues that there is a lack of communication from the state and that her case was left with zero attention.

U.S.-China Relations Hit Dangerous New Low

“The coronavirus crisis has sent U.S.-China relations spiraling, alarming analysts who say the two countries are at their most dangerous point in decades,” Axios reports.
” Seeking to deflect blame for a pandemic that originated within its borders, some Chinese officials and propaganda outlets are pushing a conspiracy theory that the U.S. military planted the virus in Wuhan — a disinformation strategy not seen since at this intensity since the early days of the Cold War.”
“Some U.S. officials, including President Trump, have responded by dubbing the coronavirus a ‘Chinese’ virus, which goes against World Health Organization naming conventions.”
Yeah it's China who is stupidly escalating tensions.
The problem for them is that they need us more than we need them.

Trump Says Respects China, but Unfortunate Virus Got Out of Control
By Reuters
March 20, 2020
WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he greatly respects China and Chinese President Xi Jinping, but it was unfortunate the coronavirus began there and got out of control.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, referring to the "Chinese virus" - a term Trump has used repeatedly, greatly angering Beijing - told the same briefing of the U.S. coronavirus task force that Beijing's delay in sharing information about the virus had created risks to people worldwide.
Trump said he has a very good relationship with Xi and considered him a friend, while adding: "It's unfortunate that this got out of control. It came from China, it got out of control. Some people are upset, I know. I know President Xi. He loves China. He respects the United States. And I have to say I respect China greatly and I respect President Xi."
Pompeo, a persistent critic of China, said it was not a matter of apportioning blame, but the Chinese government was the first to know about the risk the virus presented and was slow to share vital information.
"When you see a delay in information flowing from the Chinese Communist Party to the technical people who we wanted to get into China immediately to assist in this, every moment of delay connected to being able to identify this risk, correct the risk factors, creates risks to people all around the world," he said.
"This is why it's not about blaming someone for this, this is about moving forward to make sure that we continue to have the information we need to do our jobs."
Trump ratcheted up his rhetoric against China over the coronavirus this week, saying Beijing should have acted sooner to warn the world and dismissing criticism that his labeling it the "Chinese virus" was racist.
The president and his administration have angrily rejected attempts by Chinese officials to blame the virus on the U.S. military, but last week, Trump praised China's data sharing about the disease.
The dispute over the coronavirus is just the latest irritant in relations between the world two largest economies, which are already strained over issues ranging from trade and intellectual property rights to press freedom.

VDH:
Although we cannot see it now, spin-off effects from the panic and frenzy will eventually fuel more economic recovery. Oil prices are nearing record modern lows, ensuring cheap gas for spring and summer American drivers. Cheap mortgages and car loans likewise will spur buying, as will relief once the virus wanes and splurging ensue.
It will be salutary for Americans to once again appreciate the value of muscular labor, as those who grow food, transport it, and provide us energy and sanitation while protecting us from danger, foreign and domestic, have allowed millions of Americans to stay home, sequestered and quarantined but safe with plenty of food, water, and uninterrupted sanitation and public safety. In these days of crisis, we should not forget that millions of often unmentioned Americans have made us the world’s greatest energy and most diverse food producer — a singular position that China, with over four times our population, envies.
Before the outbreak, China was trying to game its trade war in terms of how best to hurt the hated Trump administration. Ironically, its abhorrence only strengthened the U.S. in ways no one in the pre-COVID-19 days could have imagined.
Call it paradox, irony, karma, or even tragedy, but China emerges from its deceit about the coronavirus outbreak in its weakest position since its Westernization began under Deng Xiaoping. And the U.S., after some rocky months ahead, if it stays calm, will likely reemerge in its strongest state in memory vis-à-vis its rivals.

Pandemic Puts Elections In Limbo

Associated Press: “U.S. elections have been upended by the coronavirus pandemic. At least 13 states have postponed voting and more delays are possible as health officials warn that social distancing and other measures to contain the virus might be in place for weeks, if not months.”
“The states that have yet to hold their primaries find themselves in a seemingly impossible situation as they look to balance public health concerns with the need to hold elections. While election officials routinely prepare for natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires, the virus outbreak poses a unique challenge.”
Trump Confronts a Crisis Unlike Any Before
March 21, 2020 at 1:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
New York Times:
“Mr. Trump is no stranger to crisis. He has spent a lifetime grappling with bankruptcy, fending off creditors, evading tax collectors, defending lawsuits, deflecting regulators, spinning reporters and dueling with estranged wives, usually coming out ahead, at least as he defines it. But these were crises of his own creation involving human adversaries he knew how to confront. Nothing in his background in business, entertainment or multiple marriages prepared him for the coronavirus pandemic now threatening America’s health and wealth.
“Mr. Trump’s performance on the national stage in recent weeks has put on display the traits that Democrats and some Republicans consider so jarring — the profound need for personal praise, the propensity to blame others, the lack of human empathy, the penchant for rewriting history, the disregard for expertise, the distortion of facts, the impatience with scrutiny or criticism. For years, skeptics expressed concern about how he would handle a genuine crisis threatening the nation, and now they know.”

I kind of agree. I think Biden is where he is so the democrat establishment can keep their option open for when everyone gets that Biden is in a state of dementia. If Trump is unbeatable stay with Biden or replace with token challenger. If Trump is beatable replace Biden with new establishment candidate, most likely a Dem gov or perhaps Senator.

FDA approves new coronavirus test that can diagnose within hours
he Food and Drug Administration announced approval Saturday for a new coronavirus test that can diagnose patients within hours, instead of days.
The new rapid test, manufactured by California-based Cepheid, is expected to be in the market by March 30, officials said.
“The test we’re authorizing today will be able to provide Americans with results within hours, rather than days like the existing tests," Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said. “With the development of point of care diagnostics, Americans who need tests will be able to get results faster than ever before. More and more options for reliable, convenient testing are becoming available at an incredibly rapid pace, thanks to the hard work of our FDA team and the ingenuity of American industry.”
FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said the approval "marks an important step in expanding the availability of testing and, importantly, rapid results."
Hahn said because the rapid test can be administered at the point of care, it "means that results are delivered to patients in the patient care settings, like hospitals, urgent care centers and emergency rooms, instead of samples being sent to a laboratory."
