INTERVIEWER: Finally, to both of you, this article that raised a lot of eyebrows that has just come out in The Atlantic over night -- David, Jeffrey Goldberg reporting from anonymous sources, but in his words credible sources, that the President used words like “suckers” and “losers” over the course of his presidency, talking about people who served in the military, people who died in war. The White House completely denies this. Do you see something like this having an effect?
DAVID BROOKS: Yeah, I mean, regarding Jeffrey Goldberg is that old series of scoops coming out of the Pentagon and the Defense Department administrations going back for decades now, so he’s a high credibility journalist. This story has now been confirmed by several other news organizations including Fox News, and so we can fully expect that Trump did dishonor the war dead by calling them losers and suckers. And it’s not so far out of reach of what he said in public about John McCain and others, so I find it completely credible. And the idea that a guy who is offended by Colin Kaepernick taking a knee – he says that dishonors the country – but calling the war dead “losers” -- that’s absurdity. And so people are rightly offended – I mean, we get offended by this guy on a hourly basis, but this is an offense that goes to the core of conservative value systems, of the military value system. And what’s been shocking to me this year is already, even before this happened, according to surveys of the active military personnel -- they were already for Biden, which is extremely rare for active military to be for Democrats, and so he’s already in trouble with this group, and it’s got to trouble everybody who’s in and out of uniform.

Mr. Strzok also reveals details about the F.B.I.’s internal debate over investigating the president himself, writing that the question arose early in the Trump presidency and suggesting that agents were eyeing others around Mr. Trump. Mr. Strzok was himself at first opposed to investigating the president.
But in a scathing appraisal, Mr. Strzok concludes that Mr. Trump is hopelessly corrupt and a national security threat. The investigations that Mr. Strzok oversaw showed the president’s “willingness to accept political assistance from an opponent like Russia — and, it follows, his willingness to subvert everything America stands for.”
“That’s not patriotic,” Mr. Strzok writes. “It’s the opposite.”
Mr. Strzok’s insider look serves as a counter to the efforts by Mr. Trump and his allies to discredit the Russia investigation. Attorney General William P. Barr has appointed a veteran prosecutor to review the conduct of the F.B.I., Mr. Strzok and others for possible misconduct and bias.
The Justice Department inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, found the bureau had sufficient reason to open the inquiry and found no evidence of political bias. He said in a report that he found no evidence that Mr. Strzok’s political views affected the F.B.I.’s work but that he was “deeply troubled” by the texts.
Mr. Trump and his supporters seized on the texts when they were first disclosed in late 2017 as evidence of a plot to destroy his campaign and presidency.
“The reporting about my texts hadn’t only whipped Trump into a frenzy,” Mr. Strzok writes. “It had also sent Republicans in Congress into a righteous peeve, giving them fodder for right-wing indignation that would eventually ferment into the deep-state fairy tale that would consume conservative media.”
On Twitter, Mr. Trump celebrated the firing of Mr. Strzok, a former Army intelligence officer and veteran counterintelligence investigator who worked on some of the F.B.I.’s most delicate national security matters during his 22-year career before playing a central role in both the Clinton email and Trump-Russia investigations.
Mr. Strzok has sued the Justice Department and F.B.I., alleging that his dismissal was politically motivated.
In his book, Mr. Strzok repeatedly rejects accusations that he was part of an effort at the F.B.I. to hurt Mr. Trump. He lays out the reasoning for opening the investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, into whether any Trump campaign associates had conspired with Russia’s interference operations in the 2016 election. The F.B.I. was “investigating a credible allegation of foreign intelligence activity to see where it led,” Mr. Strzok writes. “It started with Russia, and it was always about Russia.”
He also points out that the F.B.I. had kept the investigation as quiet as possible to keep from harming Mr. Trump’s candidacy, limiting the number of people inside the bureau who were aware of it to try to ensure its existence did not leak to the news media.
When F.B.I. officials later considered opening a counterintelligence investigation on the president, they faced a sobering reality. “We needed to ask a question that had never before arisen in the entire 240-year history of our republic: whether the president of the United States himself might be acting as an agent of a foreign adversary,” Mr. Strzok writes.
He says he was opposed for both “practical and philosophical arguments.” Eventually, the F.B.I. did begin investigating the president after he fired James B. Comey as its director in May 2017, a step that also prompted the appointment of a special counsel.
Mr. Strzok recounts first briefing the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, a former F.B.I. director, and outlining the “dizzyingly complicated portrait of foreign interference.”
“And on top of it all, at the pinnacle of this heap of perfidy and treachery, sat a president who had lied to the public, cozied up to Russia, and, once he became aware of them, attempted to block our investigation at every turn,” Mr. Strzok writes.
Mr. Strzok helped select the F.B.I. personnel who worked for Mr. Mueller. He says that he wanted to make sure the counterintelligence aspects of the work would be “sufficiently addressed,” and that it was not enough to simply send back what they found to the F.B.I.
When Mr. Mueller removed Mr. Strzok from the team after learning about his texts attacking the president, “we were still looking for the right way to investigate those counterintelligence concerns,” Mr. Strzok writes. But investigators’ pursuit of the matter withered after Mr. Strzok left, in part because the deputy attorney general at the time, Rod J. Rosenstein, had instructed Mr. Mueller earlier to focus on possible crimes. Counterintelligence investigations look for possible threats to national security.
The F.B.I. was unprepared for the Russian blitz on the election, despite warning signs, Mr. Strzok writes. He says the bureau should have seen the attack coming and the effect it would have. He adds that the U.S. government was also not “collaborating as effectively as we should have been.”

John McCain spent 5 years in Hanoi Pow camp where he was beaten and tortured in ways no human could imagine . I've have read the full story of John McCain to know the pain and suffering he went through. Also to know he was no sucker or loser. RETIRED LT. GENERAL MARK HERTLING Lt. I have spoken with active military members as well as veterans who are "furious" after it was reported that President Trump called fallen soldiers "losers" and "suckers."
"It's tough to speak out right now if you're an active-duty serving general officer," . "By not saying anything, they're saying a lot."
Herling went on to say in the Thursday interview that the military officers he has spoken with are outraged over the report.

The accusations could be problematic for the president because he is counting on strong support among the military for his re-election bid.
According to a recent Military Times poll, some 41 per cent of active-duty service members said they would vote for Mr Biden if the election was held today,
compared to only 37 per cent said they plan to vote to re-elect Mr Trump.

President Donald Trump criticized the media for its presumed leniency toward Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden as he explained how he believes they are treated differently.
During the White House press briefing on Friday evening, Trump sounded off with remarks slamming the media after being asked about The Atlantic’s report, which focused on allegations about the president’s alleged remarks disparaging America’s war dead.
“I watched the interview with sleepy Joe Biden and.. you didn’t ask questions like that… They were like, meant for a child. Those questions were meant for a child. Smiles on faces of reporters — not like you and you,” Trump said.
He added, “They were smiles [on the reporters]. What do you think? Take a look at those questions that they asked him. They were not meant for a grown-up, they were meant for a child.”
Trump went on to slam The Atlantic’s report and the media’s treatment of Biden, deeming it “disgraceful.”
“When I have a report read like that from a third-grade magazine that’s not going to be in business much longer — I look at that and I think it’s a disgrace,” Trump continued as he shared his opinion of the report published in The Atlantic.
Trump added, “And then I watch Biden getting asked questions that are really meant for a child to answer, anybody could answer, and I look at the level of question that you people ask. I mean honestly, it’s disgraceful.”
