Let's just call it, huh?

According to just about everyone Ossoff and Warnock are locked in to victory based on early numbers.

The folks over at 538 are not even talking about the election anymore, but rather are talking about what the Democrats can and cannot do with 50-50 Senate. They are also writing about whether or not Trump can be blamed for these losses? Hard for me to take that seriously, that since Perdue won by 2% with Trump on the ballot and looks to be losing without him.

Vice President Mike Pence told President Trump on Tuesday that he did not believe he had the power to block congressional certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory in the presidential election despite Mr. Trump’s baseless insistence that he did, people briefed on the conversation said.

Mr. Pence’s message, delivered during his weekly lunch with the president, came hours after Mr. Trump further turned up the public pressure on the vice president to do his bidding when Congress convenes Wednesday in a joint session to ratify Mr. Biden’s Electoral College win.

Trump Privately Admitted It’s Over

“Donald Trump has privately acknowledged he lost the presidency. He knows Joe Biden will replace him. He recognizes Congress will formally certify the results on Wednesday,” Politico reports.

To one person, Trump even confided he was “just disappointed we lost.”

“Trump’s acceptance has taken shape in recent weeks, according to three people who have spoken to Trump in that time span, with one conversation occurring a week ago. Trump admits his defeat, but still maintains he would have won a fair election, they said, despite no concrete evidence emerging of widespread voter fraud. He has even discussed his exit plans from Washington with staff, debating when to move to his South Florida Mar-a-Lago resort.”

So privately he admits it, and then goes out in public and lies like the maniac he is.

Both Republicans currently lead their Democratic opponents.

But most analysts consider Democrats the favorites.

This is because there are many heavily Democratic counties with a lot of vote left:
DeKalb (35% reporting)
Cobb (37%)
Gwinnett (36%)
Chatham (41%)
Muscogee (48%)

There are also some Republican areas with a decent amount of vote remaining, but there are fewer of them and they are generally smaller counties:

Forsyth (21% reporting)
Coweta (66%)
Bartow (20%)
Walton (70%)
Columbia (29%)

Forsyth is the one to watch.

My back-of-the-napkin calculations estimate that there are about 220,000 votes remaining in DeKalb, 150,000 in Cobb, 70,000 in Chatham, 60,000 in Fulton and 60,000 in Gwinnett. All are blue counties.

AMELIA THOMSON-DEVEAUX

It’s worth remembering that we’re watching a runoff election at all is a little odd — this is not standard operating procedure in most states, where the winner of the most votes (even if it’s a plurality) usually wins. Experts have pointed out that Georgia’s runoff system is rooted in a historic attempt to dilute Black voting power, giving white voters a second chance to mobilize to defeat Black candidates. Republicans have benefited from runoffs in recent years, but they might be rethinking it depending on how tonight shakes out.

NATE SILVER
JAN. 5, 9:40 PM
This is why the results as currently reported are painting an incomplete picture. Democrats are likely to gain a lot once these DeKalb ballots are reported, likely enough to net around 100k votes, or perhaps a bit more.

GEOFFREY SKELLEY
JAN. 5, 9:39 PM
Georgia has 159 counties, the second-most behind Texas, and more than half of them — 98 — have reported at least 95 percent of their expected vote. But less than 40 percent is in from DeKalb County (which is partly in Atlanta) and Forsyth County (a smaller but still sizable and very Republican part of the Atlanta metro are). Savannah (Chatham County) and Augusta (Columbia County) also are at 40 percent or less, while Clarke County (home to Athens and the University of Georgia) is only at 42 percent in. On the whole, there’s probably more vote left out in Democratic-leaning areas, which helps explain why projections such as those at The New York Times give a slight edge to the two Democratic candidates.

NATHANIEL RAKICH
JAN. 5, 9:35 PM
And Perdue is the only elected incumbent in the bunch, Rick. Incumbency advantage ain’t what it once was, but it’s still worth something.

RICK KLEIN
JAN. 5, 9:34 PM
We were just talking on the ABC News Live broadcast about the possibility that Warnock and Perdue win — that there’s enough ticket-splitting for that to happen. I still agree with most that that’s unlikely, but it’s a reminder that the four candidates are very different individuals. Warnock has a much more easily identifiable base, of course, and did better relative to the Republicans on the ballot in November.

NATE SILVER
JAN. 5, 9:34 PM
Yeah, I think people are still paying too much attention to the raw vote counts and not enough to the needle and things like it. It was pretty obvious an hour ago that Warnock and Ossoff weren’t going to maintain 8-point margins or whatever. It’s also pretty obvious now that the vote that’s left to count looks a bit blue-leaning. Enough for Democrats to win? Probably, but not for sure by any means.

Vice President Pence and his team have huddled for hours with the Senate parliamentarian. They have studied historical examples of other vice presidents who have presided over election results.
And they have begun anticipating the ire of President Trump — likely to come in the form of angry tweets — in the aftermath of Wednesday’s certification of the electoral college vote count before a joint session of Congress.
The role of Pence, who will preside over the certification, is largely ceremonial, one of the few official duties of the vice president in his capacity as president of the Senate. But Trump’s continued and baseless insistence that he won the 2020 presidential election has thrust Pence into a vise between the Constitution he swore to uphold and the president he has promised his fealty.
Pence’s performance Wednesday in the Senate chamber will serve as a fitting coda for a vice president who — through a combination of deference, obsequiousness and studied self-effacement — has made navigating the whims and loyalty requirements of his mercurial boss a full-time pursuit.
Pence’s team views the vice president’s role as procedural and limited, not unlike an umpire calling balls and strikes but ultimately hemmed in by the rules of the game. Trump, meanwhile, has expressed a desire for Pence to use Wednesday’s session to overturn the election results and snatch victory from President-elect Joe Biden — a stunning subversion of democracy that Pence has no authority to carry out, even if he so desired.

PERRY BACON JR.
JAN. 5, 11:00 PM
The Unique Importance Of Black Voters In Georgia
Black turnout is important for Democrats in every state, since 9 in 10 Black voters back Democratic candidates. But the overall Black vote matters even more in Georgia, because around 30 percent of the state’s electorate is Black, compared to about 12 percent of the electorate nationally. We won’t have detailed demographics information about this race in Georgia for a while, but it is virtually certain that the plurality — and perhaps even an outright majority — of Georgia voters for Ossoff and Warnock are Black.

Democrats spent a lot of time the last four years obsessing about states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and wooing white voters without college degrees in particular. And while it’s not clear that Biden did that much better than Hillary Clinton with white voters without college degrees, he did win Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. But Georgia is a different ball game, in part because of its big Black population. And notably, the Democrats ran a campaign for these Senate seats that reflected the large Black electorate in the state:

They embraced the approach of Stacey Abrams, a Black woman, of really trying to boost turnout among voters of color, younger voters and those in the Atlanta area.
They embraced two candidates with lots of ties to Atlanta’s Black community. In Warnock, the pastor of the church MLK and his father ran, but also in Ossoff, who worked for two Atlanta Black congressmen, the late John Lewis and Hank Johnson.
And lastly, they embraced a kind of social justice message. Ossoff and Warnock talked a lot about voting rights and other “Black” issues on the campaign trail.
If Democrats win one or both of these races, I would expect them to run similar campaigns to this in other states in the South with large Black populations.

NATHANIEL RAKICH
JAN. 5, 10:59 PM
One of the places where Ossoff and Warnock have improved on Biden’s performance the most: Clayton County, a 73 percent Black county where Biden got 85 percent of the vote but Ossoff is at 88 percent and Warnock is at 89 percent. Yet another reminder that, if Ossoff and Warnock pull this off, they’ll owe their victories to Black voters.

NATHANIEL RAKICH
JAN. 5, 10:55 PM
Chatham County (home of Savannah) is done counting for the night and will pick things back up at 8 a.m. tomorrow. I estimate there are about 20,000 votes left to count there, and they should lean Democratic.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

NATHANIEL RAKICH
JAN. 5, 11:18 PM
Let’s do a little thought exercise. There are about 171,000 early votes left to count in DeKalb. Let’s say Ossoff and Warnock win them 143,000 to 28,000, which would mirror how Biden did in November among DeKalb early voters. That would perfectly erase Perdue’s current 115,000-vote lead and turn Loeffler’s current 82,000-vote lead into a 33,000-vote Warnock lead. And that’s without counting the remaining ballots in Cobb, Chatham and other outstanding counties.

GEOFFREY SKELLEY
JAN. 5, 11:10 PM
Ah, election night confusion. A report from CNN claimed that there were only 130,000 or so votes left in DeKalb County. If true, that would be bad news for the Democrats because it’s a very blue county and Democrats need a big total from there to take the lead. But Gabriel Sterling, the voting system implementation manager for Georgia’s secretary of state, corrected them to say that more than 171,000 early votes are going to be uploaded by DeKalb. And that makes sense, as the state’s data said that 171,000 early votes had been cast in DeKalb. Now with slightly more than 90 percent of the expected vote in statewide, DeKalb looms large. Literally — it’s the huge blue dot on the New York Times map of remaining votes.

NATHANIEL RAKICH
JAN. 5, 11:06 PM
There is still no official projection in either race in Georgia, but The New York Times’s needle is quite confident in both a Warnock and Ossoff victory.

KALEIGH ROGERS

Trump supporters have been flooding into D.C. today ahead of a planned “stop the steal” rally tomorrow. There were some speeches earlier this evening, but as night closed in, the crowds took to the streets, where they have been live-streaming the demonstration as police stand by. Democrats Projected to Take Control of Senate
5:30 am
Decision Desk has projected what we anticipated last night: Democrats will take control of the U.S. Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie breaking vote.

Quote of the Day
“With new votes joining the tally, we are on a strong path. But even while we wait for more, let’s celebrate the extraordinary organizers, volunteers, canvassers & tireless groups that haven’t stopped going since Nov. Across our state, we roared. A few miles to go… but well done!”
— Stacey Abrams, on Twitter, savoring what the New York Times called a 10-year project to turn Georgia blue.

Republicans Turn on Trump
5:21 am
Politico: “The immediate recrimination is emblematic of the complicated GOP dynamics that have emerged after Trump’s loss in the November election. Fissures are forming as Republicans decide whether it’s useful to cling to Trump — even as he tries to subvert an election — or to distance themselves. And if the Georgia races are any indication, it appears Republicans are willing to turn on Trump if he can’t reliably turn out the vote for candidates in the months and years ahead.

“When asked why Republicans didn’t prevail on Tuesday, a senior Senate Republican aide simply said: ‘Donald J. Trump.'

“The frustration stems from the days after the Nov. 3 election. While Republicans tried to reset in Georgia and prepare for the two runoff races, the president set off a civil war within his own party as he launched a divisive campaign to overturn the 2020 election.”

Bush Will Attend Biden’s Inauguration
5:14 am
“George W. Bush, the only living Republican former president, will attend the inauguration of Joe Biden later this month,” Bloomberg reports.

“The couple has gone to the inaugurations of Bush’s successors, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. It remains unclear whether Trump, who continues to insist, without evidence, that widespread fraud denied him re-election, will appear at the event on Jan. 20.”

Aides Confirm Pence Won’t Interfere In Electoral Vote
5:13 am
“Despite growing pressure from President Donald Trump to help overturn his election loss, Vice President Mike Pence plans to stick to his ceremonial duties and not interfere with the election certification when presiding in Congress on Wednesday, advisers said,” Reuters reports.

Trump Supporters Harass Mitt Romney on Flight
7:03 am
A video shows Trump supporters heckling Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) — chanting “traitor, traitor, traitor!” — on a flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. last night.

Washington Post: “The video, which went viral on Tuesday, is the latest sign of a growing divide in the Republican Party over President Trump’s false claims of a rigged election, which Romney has pointedly criticized. The incident foreshadows the rancor expected in the nation’s capital this week as thousands of Trump backers arrive to protest Congress certifying the electoral college victory for President-elect Joe Biden.”

Black Votes Mattered
6:55 am
Associated Press: “Warnock, senior pastor of the church where Martin Luther King preached through the height of the Civil Rights movement until his assassination, made history with a surge in Black turnout.”

“To be sure, a narrow win out of 4.4 million votes involves plenty of variables. But Black voters were a force in the early vote and on Election Day. Notably, it wasn’t just in metro Atlanta, but also in rural and small-town counties across South Georgia, where Black turnout has historically lagged.”

“That means it was an alliance spanning from the most affluent Black residents of Atlanta, including recent transplants to Georgia, to those Black Georgia natives who hail from the most economically depressed pockets of the state.”

The GOP Implodes In Georgia
6:36 am
Playbook: “Loeffler’s reputation has been burned. Appointed to her office to help the GOP compete in the suburbs, she failed in her first election. Yet today, she’ll take the anti-democratic step of voting against Biden’s Electoral College win, sealed with millions of lawfully cast ballots in Georgia and across the nation. Loeffler’s money helped finance a brutal campaign against Warnock that provoked Black voters, including the players on the WNBA team she owns.

“Perdue’s troubles are a testament to the perils of embracing Trumpism. A one-time free-trading establishment Republican, he received 88,000 more votes than Ossoff on Nov. 3, forced into a runoff because he failed to break 50%. He then felt the need to tie himself to Trump even tighter, although Biden had defeated the president in Georgia. As he ran harder right, he ceded the center to Ossoff.

“While Perdue donned regular-guy denim and Loeffler began dressing as if she drove an 18-wheeler, Democrats made sure to highlight just how rich the two senators were. They were savaged for privately trading stocks after receiving briefings on coronavirus, the threat of which they publicly downplayed.”

Axios: “Top Republicans blame Trump for sabotaging what should have been two easy wins — turning off suburban voters with his chaos and craziness, and sowing distrust of the Peach State election machinery with base voters.”

Trump Predictably and Falsely Claims Fraud
9:05 am
President Trump is already baselessly claiming fraud in Georgia’s Senate runoffs:

“They just happened to find 50,000 ballots late last night. The USA is embarrassed by fools. Our Election Process is worse than that of third world countries!”

Jon Ossoff Declares Victory
8:54 am

Jon Ossoff (D) declared victory in Georgia’s Senate runoff election Wednesday morning as tallies showed him leading incumbent Sen. David Perdue (R) by just over 16,000 votes.

Ossoff’s lead is currently within the 0.5 percent margin that would trigger a statewide recount in the race.

Trump’s Final Insult
7:56 am
Kevin Williamson in the National Review:
“I have on many occasions criticized the abuse of the word coup in our politics, but that is what this is: an attempted coup d’état under color of law. It would be entirely appropriate today to impeach Trump a second time and remove him from office before his term ends.

“No one who has participated in this poisonous buffoonery should ever hold office again. There was a time when there was a plausible if sometimes self-serving rationale for working for the Trump administration — that the president is a clueless poseur surrounded by crackpots and frauds, and that he desperately needs good counsel from responsible adults. But the Trump administration is not currently under the guiding influence of any such responsible adults — and there simply is no defending what it is up to. This cannot be excused or explained away.”

McConnell Will Move to Save GOP from Itself
7:40 am
Axios: “During a Joint Session with the House, lawmakers plan to object first to Arizona’s results, which come up early in the alphabetical roll call of states. McConnell is expected to be the first senator to speak after he and his colleagues return to their chamber.

“McConnell will draw on the same principles he laid out during a call with the Republican conference last week. He said Wednesday’s vote certifying Joe Biden’s victory would be ‘the most consequential I have ever cast.'

“McConnell fears the vote will put Republicans up for re-election in 2022 in a horrible position — forcing them to choose between defying the most popular politician in the party, Donald Trump, and fueling Democratic charges they are undermining democracy.”

Trump Didn’t Want to Go Back to Georgia
7:35 am
Jonathan Swan: “He told advisers he didn’t think he needed to go back. Both candidates, Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, put in a huge behind-the-scenes effort to get him to go back. He plugged them during his Monday rally, but also ranted about the state’s Republican officials and election machinery.

“Trump was fixated on his own grievances and on increasingly untethered scenarios for how he might overturn the election.

“It took great effort to get him to focus on any other subject or to convince him that anything beyond his own election factored into his self-interest.”

Some Worry Trump Won’t Stop

7:33 am
“President Trump’s allies are hoping Wednesday marks his last stand in a weekslong effort to challenge the November election results, with multiple people close to Trump privately acknowledging that his options will be exhausted once Congress tabulates the Electoral College votes,” NBC News reports.

“Yet people close to Trump also say he still may not relent after this final step in the election process, given that his determination to overturn the results has only intensified despite its having failed multiple times — including state certifications and the Electoral College meeting last month — and scores of legal defeats.”

Said one of Trump’s allies: “It’s going to get worse before it gets better. He’s lost re-election. So for somebody who has no sense of shame, there’s no downside to him letting all the crazy out.”

Congress Will Meet Into the Night to Certify Biden’s Win
8:02 am
“The House and Senate will convene Wednesday afternoon for a remarkable joint session to formalize President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s Electoral College victory, with President Trump and his allies plotting to transform the counting session into one final, futile attempt to overturn the results,” the New York Times reports.

“Bipartisan majorities in both chambers are prepared to meet late into the night to beat back the challenges and confirm Mr. Biden as the winner. But by using what is typically a ceremonial proceeding as a forum for trying to subvert a democratic election, Mr. Trump and his allies are going where no party has since the Reconstruction era of the 19th century, when Congress bargained over the presidency.

Its implications, for future elections and the Republican Party, could be significant.

Why Biden Is Quiet About the Electoral Vote Challenge
5:00 am
“When Senate Republicans spent weeks refusing to acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory, Biden’s response was: chill out and give it time,” Politico reports.

“Biden is following the same playbook now as dozens of congressional Republicans plan to challenge his Electoral College victory on Wednesday. Biden has intentionally been muted on the topic to give Republicans political space to maneuver and let the factions fight amongst themselves.”

Said one source familiar with Biden’s strategy: “All of this is sort of a deliberate effort to be clear about what’s happening and it being wrong and unacceptable, but being somewhat measured to let others denounce what’s happening.”

AFTER LAST NIGHT

As I write at 6:00 a.m. (Central) this morning, Raphael Warnock’s race against Kelly Loeffler has been called for Warnock. While Jon Ossoff’s race against David Perdue has yet to be called, Ossoff leads and his lead is likely to widen when the remaining votes are counted. Democrats will thus take control of the Senate on a 50-50 split with Kamala Harris presiding as Vice President. Here are a few thoughts and observations.

• Chuck Schumer is to become Senate Majority Leader. With that prospect in sight, Schumer declared” “Now we take Georgia, then we change America!” Democrats get to redeem his vow.

• The change will go about as far as Joe Manchin and perhaps Krysten Sinema approve. Manchin has stated that he won’t go for packing the Supreme Court, but how does he feel about making the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico a state? How does he feel about killing the filibuster?

• Raphael Warnock presents as an update of Jeremiah Wright. He is a token of how far left the Democratic Party has gone since 2008, when Barack Obama found it necessary to disavow him. Now a simulacrum of Wright is moving up from a hate-America pulpit to the body formerly known as the world’s greatest deliberative body.

• Warnock ran ahead of Jon Ossoff all night. Perdue was a more formidable opponent than Loeffler, but I assume his appeal to black voters played a role in enhancing his margin of victory.

• Jon Ossoff is a throwback to Pajama Boy, another reminder of the Obama era. The guy needed a real job.

• Despite Warnock’s slightly greater margin of victory, the two Democratic candidates ran almost entirely in tandem as the vote came in. Voters who turned out wanted Democrats to control the Senate.

• With the Democrats’ margin so narrow in both races, the blame for these losses is overdetermined. I blame President Trump’s continuing critique of Republican Georgia officeholders in connection with his loss of the state on November 3. The prospect of $2,000 checks all the way around also appear to have become a substantial contributing factor.

• Governor Brian Kemp appointed Kelly Loeffler to the seat she has lost. While preferable to Warnock on any rational standard, she was a weak candidate in her own right. What was he thinking? I wish he had appointed Rep. Doug Collins, who challenged Loeffler in the November 3 jungle primary for her seat.

• As Collins and Loeffler went toe to toe in the jungle primary, Warnock skated until November 3.

• Warnock is up for reelection to a full six-year term in 2022. It would be nice if Republicans can field a serious candidate to challenge him in that contest.

• Republican turnout in Republican areas was less than required to prevail. Many stayed home to sit on their hands. Why might that have been with so much on the line? Erick Erickson observes: “Republicans in Georgia in November won 51% of all votes cast for congressional races; 53% for state house races; and 54% for state senate races. Then the President and the State GOP Chairman spent two months telling Republicans the game was rigged and the election was stolen.”

• Lin Wood and Sidney Powell also deserve to be remembered for their role in fanning the flames of insanity encouraging Republican voters to stay home. As far as I am concerned, they can both go to hell.

• As I say, there is lots of blame to go around and it is necessary to assess it adequately. I don’t pretend to have done so here in the early morning hours of January 6. I offer two more comments from Erick Erickson: “Area of the state where Donald Trump last campaigned turned out at a lower rate than the rest of the state. It’s also now represented by a QAnon Congresswoman who has been very vocal that the Democrats stole it all and would steal it all again.” And this: “No Republicans, the Democrats did not steal the races in Georgia. You talked yourselves out of voting. That’s not theft.”

• Behind the scenes, Stacey Abrams must be one of the Democrats’ biggest winners this year. In addition to a formidable opponent for Warnock in 2022, Georgia Republicans need a good candidate to challenge Stacey Abrams in the 2022 gubernatorial contest. Kemp is not the man.

Republicans have now lost the Presidency, the House and the Senate, and this is just the beginning as the full extent of the Trump disaster manifests over the coming year. Enjoy knowing that a hundred unqualified judges have been placed, because that's the only legacy you'll see.

But continue backing this disastrous loser if you want.

And btw, the Democrats can do everything with a 51-50 Senate that they could do with 55-45 Senate. Your hero McConnell left a road map for running roughshod with the slimmest of margins, and we shall soon see how that works for him now.

Stupid people like the kputz don't know what socialism is. The Democratic party is not a socialist party.

Definition of socialism

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

2a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property.

b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state.

Nobody wants the government to take all private property and the means of production.

Nobody is going to take kputz's inherited ranch or his cow Daisy he fucks up her anus.

The Obama economic recovery was the longest economic recovery in history.

it sure was. it took waaay fucking longer than it should've. you keep crowing about this like it's a good thing alky. it's not. it sucks in the same way FDR's "Great" Depression sucked. back then the rest of the world had recovered, while we were still paying one guy to dig a hole and paying another guy to fill it in. it was "Great" because it was fucking LONG.

every time you post this shit you do nothing but reveal your economic ignorance. as if we need the reminder.

Why the ‘Obama Recovery’ Took So Long

The economy should have roared back. Instead it crawled.

Milton Friedman was the first economist to notice a pattern in American economic history: The deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery. The economy has to grow even faster than normal for a while to catch up to where it would have been without the recession. The fundamentals of America’s world-leading economy are so strong that the pattern held throughout the country’s history.

Until the past decade. The 2008-09 recession was so bad, the economy should have come roaring back with a booming recovery—even stronger than Reagan’s boom in the 1980s. But Mr. Obama carefully, studiously pursued the opposite of every pro-growth policy Reagan had followed. What he got was the worst recovery from a recession since the Great Depression.

Before Mr. Obama, in the 11 previous recessions since the Depression, the economy recovered all jobs lost during the recession an average of 27 months after the recession began. In Mr. Obama’s recovery, dating from the summer of 2009, the recession’s job losses were not recovered until after 76 months—more than six years.
