These are the people who want to impeach the President for inciting violence?

I guess it all depends on what violence you are inciting, huh?

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned Thursday night, blaming President Donald Trump for rhetoric that fueled the “unconscionable” invasion of the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters.

DeVos is the second member of Trump’s cabinet to quit because of the riot Wednesday, which flooded the halls of Congress, postponing the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

Earlier Thursday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said she would resign. A number of other Trump administration officials also have quit since Wednesday over the riot.

In a letter to Trump, which said she would leave office Friday, DeVos listed what she said were the successes she and Trump had in education policy.

“We should be highlighting and celebrating your Administration’s many accomplishments on behalf of the American people,” DeVos wrote.

“Instead, we are left to clean up the mess caused by violent protestors overrunning the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to undermine the people’s business,” she wrote.

“That behavior was unconscionable for our country,” DeVos wrote. “There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is an inflection point for me.”

President Trump promised a smooth transition in a video message posted on Twitter Thursday night, saying that his supporters had pursued post-election challenges in good faith, but “now tempers must be cooled and calm restored.”
Trump’s comments are the closest he has come to acknowledging his loss, and they follow escalating calls for his removal, coming hours after the nation’s top congressional Democrats demanded he be removed from office for his role in the deadly sacking of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.
[Trump open rifts in a Republican Party he has controlled]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) called on officials to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment, warning that they are prepared to begin impeachment proceedings if the Cabinet and vice president do not act.

Though that extraordinary step is unlikely to succeed, it is a sign that a growing number of Democrats and Republicans now believe Trump is too dangerous to remain president.

Trump “invited an armed insurrection against the United States of America,” Pelosi told reporters a day after a pro-Trump mob incited by the president stormed the Capitol, vandalizing the building and forcing lawmakers to evacuate. One woman was fatally shot and three people died of other causes.

Over the course of the day, a growing chorus of officials — including current Cabinet secretaries and Trump allies — strongly chastised the president, who stayed out of sight until his evening message, in which he denounced the mob attack, adding “to those who broke the law, you will pay.”

Reading off a script in a flat voice, Trump claimed he immediately deployed the National Guard to help secure the building and expel the intruders. Other officials have disputed that account.
Trump also claimed his attempts to overturn the election results were simply his efforts to “ensure the integrity of the vote.”
“Now, Congress has certified the results,” he said. “A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.”
Late Wednesday night, lawmakers certified President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, the proceeding they were in the middle of when the pro-Trump riot began. The Senate voted 92 to 7 to reject a Republican challenge to Biden’s victory; the House dismissed the challenges in a 282 to 138 vote.
Shortly after Congress affirmed Biden’s win, Trump released a statement pledging “an orderly transition,” even as he continued to falsely claim the election was riddled with fraud. The statement was tweeted by White House social media director Dan Scavino as Trump remained locked out of his account.
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said.
Hours earlier, Trump had encouraged his followers to march on the Capitol and sympathized with the rioters even as the insurrection was underway, calling them “great patriots” and explaining away the lawless siege as the consequence of a stolen election.
Even some Trump allies, who rarely rebuke the president and often take pains to defend his behavior in public, tried to distance themselves from the president, criticizing Trump’s behavior as unacceptable.

The Scarlet ‘S’
9:41 pm
George Will:
“The Trump-Hawley-Cruz insurrection against constitutional government will be an indelible stain on the nation. They, however, will not be so permanent. In 14 days, one of them will be removed from office by the constitutional processes he neither fathoms nor favors. It will take longer to scrub the other two from public life. Until that hygienic outcome is accomplished, from this day forward, everything they say or do or advocate should be disregarded as patent attempts to distract attention from the lurid fact of what they have become. Each will wear a scarlet ‘S’ as a SEDITIONIST.”

Seditionist Trump Retreats In Rage
9:34 pm
“President Trump spent more than 24 hours after instigating a mob to violently storm the Capitol trying to escape reality,” the Washington Post reports.

“Cloistered in the White House, Trump raged uncontrollably about perceived acts of betrayal.
He tuned out advisers who pleaded with him to act responsibly.
He was uninterested in trying to repair what he had wrought.
And he continued to insist he had won the election,
even as his own vice president certified THE FACT THAT HE HAD NOT.”

The Wall Street Journal

The lodestar of these columns is the U.S. Constitution. The document is the durable foundation protecting liberty, and this week it showed its virtue again. Despite being displaced for a time by a mob, Congress returned the same day to ratify the Electoral College vote and Joe Biden’s election. Congratulations to the President-elect, who will be inaugurated as the Constitution stipulates at noon on Jan. 20.

***

That still leaves Wednesday’s disgrace and what to do about the 13 days left in Donald Trump’s presidential term. Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are demanding that Mr. Trump be removed from office immediately—either by the Cabinet under the 25th Amendment or new articles of impeachment. There’s partisan animus at work here, but Mr. Trump’s actions on Wednesday do raise constitutional questions that aren’t casually dismissed.

Trump's Push to Overturn the Electoral College.

In concise summary, on Wednesday the leader of the executive branch incited a crowd to march on the legislative branch. The express goal was to demand that Congress and Vice President Mike Pence reject electors from enough states to deny Mr. Biden an Electoral College victory. When some in the crowd turned violent and occupied the Capitol, the President caviled and declined for far too long to call them off. When he did speak, he hedged his plea with election complaint.

This was an assault on the constitutional process of transferring power after an election. It was also an assault on the legislature from an executive sworn to uphold the laws of the United States. This goes beyond merely refusing to concede defeat. In our view it crosses a constitutional line that Mr. Trump hasn’t previously crossed. It is impeachable.

so some drug dealing hip hop fuckstick get's shot by a cop or overdoses and the path to sainthood is short and celebrated.

let a patriot Air Force veteran get executed by a cop and their reputation must be destroyed before they're even lowered into the ground.

Ashli Babbitt's Twitter account said she loved "my dude, my dog, & above all, my country." On Wednesday, Babbitt, a 14-year veteran of the Air Force who ardently supported President Donald Trump and also dabbled in conspiracy theories over social media, died during a rampage at the US Capitol.

Law-enforcement officials told NBC News of her death, and the police confirmed the news to The Washington Post. MSNBC reported that a law-enforcement officer fired the fatal shot.

Babbitt was one of hundreds of Trump supporters who, at the president's suggestion earlier Wednesday, descended on the Capitol to protest the confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden's victory against Trump. Photos and videos of Babbitt inside the Capitol before, during, and after she was shot were shared across social media, and after her death her husband told local media in San Diego - where she was believed to reside - that Babbitt was an ardent Trump supporter.

Babbitt's social-media posts leading up to her death give a clearer idea of her decision to head to Washington.

Babbitt regularly expressed support for Trump on social media. While she didn't tweet much herself, she was an ardent retweeter of conservative and right-wing figures, including Michael Flynn and Jack Posobiec, and conservative news sites like Right Side Broadcasting.

No, I am not giving a stamp of approval to what occurred in the Capitol. On balance, the actions by pro-Trump forces were not particularly useful for our side, and the death of the lady veteran was nothing short of disastrous. But let’s not pretend, like Rod Dreher, John Podhoretz, George Will, Erick Erickson, and most of the usual suspects that Wednesday’s occupation of the Capitol after a very impulsive speech by the president was a horrible black mark on the Right.

According to these media celebrities, we should be impeaching Trump right now, less than two weeks before the presidency falls to a corrupt, senile political hack, on its way to being turned over to Kamala Harris. We have a duty to punish our side because unlike the other side, we should be especially virtuous and shun any conflict, except of course with the American Right. Erickson went so far as to call on the police to “shoot the protestors.”

I must also take exception with Miranda Devine, who asserts that Trump’s supporters and Trump himself have now given the Left “a free pass to persecute their ideological enemies while enacting their pet cultural Marxist projects and changing this country irrevocably for the worst.” This is inevitably just what the one-party Left will do, but not because of what happened Wednesday.

Devine also provides the real reason—namely, that the Senate is now “in Democratic control, thanks to Tuesday’s runoff debacle.” Because of the vote counting in that race, which looked every bit as suspect as what occurred in the same state in November, our wacky cultural Marxist Left will soon be able to do what it wants with the federal government. The media will cover for any outrage this Left unleashes, and Conservatism, Inc. will predictably do its part as gatekeeper for the politically correct Right.

What happened Wednesday is comparable to the way other would-be totalitarians take over. They manufacture crises that justify their unchecked power. The Nazi regime used the attempted burning of the Reichstag in March 1933 to marginalize opposition. If a Reichstag fire had not come along, some other pretext would have been devised to justify the Third Reich’s tightening grip. The Left, once in charge of the federal government, will unroll with media cooperation multiple examples of “prejudice” and “discrimination” that it will then proceed to address—e.g., imposed gender roles at birth, distinctions between citizens and illegal aliens (read: future Democratic voters), and the unsettling effects of gender-specific pronouns. There will also be more lockdowns, probably long after the COVID-19 infection rate plummets because of the vaccine, and green deals in abundance.

None of this will happen because of what overly combative Trump demonstrators did Wednesday. It will take place because the Left is maniacal and power-driven and those on the other side are led by wusses and nonstop apologists. But let’s stop fixating on Wednesday’s events. We can deplore them once the Left repents of its far, far greater sins.

remember when "cleansing," ethnic or otherwise, was a bad thing?

no more!

Beware, 75 million Trump voters.

The media is calling for your ideological “cleansing” of Trump thought.

In a column and tweet, ABC’s well-respected political director Rick Klein made the call after yesterday’s pro-Trump riots inside the halls of Congress.

[...]

“Even aside from impeachment and 25th Amendment talk, Trump will be an ex-president in 13 days. The fact is that getting rid of Trump is the easy part,” Klein wrote in his popular blog.

“Cleansing the movement he commands, or getting rid of what he represents to so many Americans, is going to be something else,” he added, drawing comments that it sounded too much like Hitler.

UPDATE: After this story posted, the tweet was deleted and the story wording changed. The "Cleansing" paragraph reads, "Cleaning up the movement he commands, or getting rid of what he represents to so many Americans, is going to be something else."

Several media outlets and liberals have previously called for the creation of a “list” of Trump aides to be targeted and blackballed from jobs.

and the slowdown of the economy begins...

Mortgage rates have surged after two runoff elections in Georgia flipped the balance of power in the U.S. Senate from the Republicans to the Democrats. That gives President-elect Joe Biden’s party full control over Congress and potentially makes it easier to pass his agenda.

Investors expect more government spending, explains Matthew Speakman, an economist with Zillow.

“This oftentimes requires the issuance of more Treasury debt, pushing yields upward,” says Matthew Speakman, an economist with Zillow.

In fact, the interest on Treasury bonds has jumped — and mortgage rates have followed suit. If you’ve been holding off buying a home or refinancing an existing mortgage, you may want to get moving — in case rates go higher still.

Scott, seriously the President, the leader of the executive branch sent an armed mob to attack the legislative branch of the government.

That is an attack on the American system of government.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

If Mr. Trump wants to avoid a second impeachment, his best path would be to take personal responsibility and resign. This would be the cleanest solution since it would immediately turn presidential duties over to Mr. Pence. And it would give Mr. Trump agency, a la Richard Nixon, over his own fate.

This might also stem the flood of White House and Cabinet resignations that are understandable as acts of conscience but could leave the government dangerously unmanned. Robert O’Brien, the national security adviser, in particular should stay at his post.

We know an act of grace by Mr. Trump isn’t likely. In any case this week has probably finished him as a serious political figure. He has cost Republicans the House, the White House, and now the Senate. Worse, he has betrayed his loyal supporters by lying to them about the election and the ability of Congress and Mr. Pence to overturn it. He has refused to accept the basic bargain of democracy, which is to accept the result, win or lose.

It is best for everyone, himself included, if he goes away quietly.

At  least three main factors are behind the slowdown. A resurgence in coronavirus infections has caused states and cities to impose new restrictions on businesses, such as earlier curfews and business closures, and caused some consumers to stay indoors. The onset of cold weather has limited the ability of businesses, particularly restaurants, to continue to host patrons outdoors. And earlier efforts by Congress and states to aid businesses—such as stimulus checks and additional unemployment compensation—faded before a new aid package was signed into law at the end of December.

The silver lining is that economists believe the lull will be temporary. The process of distributing vaccines is under way. The roughly $900 billion aid plan is providing stimulus checks of up to $600 for most families, a $300-per-week boost in unemployment benefits for laid-off workers and a new round of aid for businesses. President-elect Joe Biden, a Democrat who takes office Jan. 20, has said he wants to provide more relief for households, and his party will control both chambers of Congress after the Senate elections in Georgia.

As households receive that money, many could boost spending, which would prompt businesses to hire workers to meet the demand.

The Biden economic recovery will start on January 21st.

Can President Trump be Impeached and Removed on the Grounds of Incitement? If Trump’s speech is protected by the First Amendment, then incitement cannot be grounds for impeachment.

The legal definition of incitement is quite narrow. The press definition, on the other hand, is “anything we can tie a Republican to.”

She also said he should consider resigning.

Trump’s Failures Open Rifts In Republican Party
7:34 am
“President Trump and his family started the week asserting indefinite dominance over the Republican Party, threatening primary challenges and verbal lashings on anyone who challenged his delusional effort to overturn the 2020 election result,” the Washington Post reports.

“The backlash since then has been shocking and sudden, as party leaders and senior officials have affirmed their independence from the lame-duck president, whose reputation as a political winner has been tarnished by twin debacles on successive days.”

Taegan Goddard: A GOP Split Is an Opportunity for Biden ==Trump’s Political Future In Peril
7:28 am
Reuters: “The Republican president has dangled the possibility of running for president in 2024, and political operatives had expected him to exert influence over the Republican Party for years to come.

“But his behavior on Wednesday – goading supporters to march on the Capitol to encourage lawmakers to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s win in the Nov. 3 election, and then failing quickly to call on them to stand down after violence ensued – has sickened people who work and used to work for him and, they said, changed the equation for his post-presidential relevance.”

Said one former White House official: “It was a dereliction of duty as commander-in-chief and I think he will be mortally wounded from a political career going forward. He has blood on his hands from yesterday.”

Trump Remains Angry and Isolated
7:24 am
Wall Street Journal: “In past moments of crisis, the president has often spent hours on the phone, calling dozens of friends and advisers to get their take. That wasn’t the case on Wednesday and Thursday, aides said, as several of the president’s closest advisers publicly condemned his response to the riots. He also has rebuffed calls from advisers including former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has said he spent 25 minutes on Wednesday trying to reach the president to urge him to call for the violence to stop.

“Advisers said the president remains consumed with anger toward Vice President Mike Pence over what he saw as a betrayal for refusing to try to block the congressional certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory. Several White House officials steered clear of the Oval Office on Thursday, wanting to avoid a president described by one adviser as ‘in a dark place.’ Advisers said the president appears more consumed with his election loss than remorseful for the riot.”

Said one adviser: “It’s like watching someone self-destruct in front of your very eyes, and you can’t do anything.”

“Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel, had warned Mr. Trump of just that danger on Wednesday as aides frantically tried to get the president to intervene and publicly call off rioters, which he did only belatedly, reluctantly and halfheartedly." (YEAH, HE READS THE SCRIPT WITH SUCH HALF HEARTED UNENTHUSIASM)

Major Hawley Donor Calls for Him to Be Censured
11:01 pm
A Missouri businessman who helped bankroll Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-MO) first campaign denounced him on Thursday as a “political opportunist” who used “irresponsible, inflammatory, and dangerous tactics” to incite the rioting that took over the U.S. Capitol Building, the Missouri Independent reports.

David Humphreys also called on the U.S. Senate to censure Hawley “for provoking yesterday’s riots in our nation’s capital.”

Newspapers Call on Hawley to Resign
10:51 pm
Kansas City Star:
“If Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley had shown any evidence that there’s a conscience in there somewhere, underneath the ambition and the artifice and the uncommon combo of striving and laziness that he’s somehow made work for him, then we wouldn’t be where we are right now.

“We wouldn’t, that is, be wondering what to say to a man who, having so disgraced his office, and our state, must either resign or be removed from the U.S. Senate.”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“Americans have had enough of Trumpism and the two-faced, lying, populist politicians who embraced it. Hawley’s presidential aspirations have been flushed down the toilet because of his role in instigating Wednesday’s assault on democracy. He should do Missourians and the rest of the country a big favor and resign now.
