Rush Limbaugh, conservative talk radio pioneer, dead at 70
Can't say I was a big listener of Rush Limbaugh or even much of a fan. But I can say that he was an iconic radio voice and his presence in the political scene will be missed. Love him or hate him, it was impossible to ignore him!

Rush Limbaugh, the monumentally influential media icon who transformed talk radio and politics in his decades behind the microphone, helping shape the modern-day Republican Party, died Wednesday morning at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer, his family announced.
Limbaugh's wife, Kathryn, made the announcement on his radio show. "Losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life," she said. Rush will forever be the greatest of all time."
The radio icon learned he had Stage IV lung cancer in January 2020 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump at the State of the Union address days later. First lady Melania Trump then presented America’s highest civilian honor to Limbaugh in an emotional moment on the heels of his devastating cancer diagnosis.
Limbaugh had a long history of racist, sexist and homophobic remarks. His political positions were often echoed by Republican lawmakers, and later conservative web bloggers.
In the Limbaugh lexicon, advocates for the homeless were “compassion fascists,” women who favored abortion were “feminazis,” environmentalists were “tree-hugging wackos.” He delivered “AIDS updates” with a Dionne Warwick song, “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” ridiculed Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease symptoms, and called global warming a hoax.
"Rush thought we won, and so do I, by the way. I think we won substantially… You would have had riots going all over the place if that happened to a Democrat. We don’t have the same support at certain levels of the Republican system.”
National call in radio shows existed long before Limbaugh went on the air, but he was the guy who made the format huge. There may be others who got higher ratings at times, but he was the king of talk radio for decades.
Rush Limbaugh is responsible for the rise of the alternative reality media that challenged mainstream media narratives, conservative bloggers and put false conservatism like the former President on the map.
