Alejandro Mayorkas blames border crisis, migrant surge on Trump

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas blamed the Trump administration for the current crisis at the southern border Monday — despite new data showing migrants flooding the border because they believe President Biden will welcome them with open arms.

“Let me explain to you why [fixing the broken immigration system] is hard and why it is going take time. I think it is important to understand what we have inherited because it defines the situation as it currently stands. Entire systems are not rebuilt in a day or in a few weeks,” he began. “To put it succinctly, the prior administration dismantled our nation’s immigration system in its entirety.”

“When I started 27 days ago, I learned that we did not have the facilities available or equipped to administer the humanitarian laws that our Congress passed years ago,” Mayorkas continued. “We did not have the personnel, policies, procedures or training to administer those laws.

So in a nutshell, the argument here is going something like this:

• Prior to Trump, we used to have uncontrolled illegal border crossings
• Prior to Trump, we used to spend a ton of money and resources dealing with it
• While Trump was President we started to control illegal border crossing
• While Trump was President we no longer required the same resources
• Now that Biden is President, they want more border illegal crossings
• But now the same resources no longer exist to deal with it

So apparently that is all Trump's fault.

Make no mistake, the Homeland Security Secretary really cannot blame Trump for any increase in border crossings. He can only blame Trump for not providing the new Administration with the resources to handle the increase in border crossings that they are encouraging. Obviously the Secretary is attempting to suggest that illegal border crossings are something that has been sanctioned by Congress based on humanitarian laws. 

Make no mistake. Congress never passed laws making these border crossings legal. We just had a prior Administration (Obama) who chose to not enforce the laws that were in place. This created a crisis that needed to be dealt with and likely led to Congress providing more money. However, this was a crisis that went away when Trump chose to enforce the laws as they are written. There was no reason to keep up detention facilities and facilitate the resources to deal with overwhelming numbers of illegals that were no longer overwhelming in number. Resources were repositioned into areas that made more sense.

This is simply a lack of common sense and a lack of planning.  The immediate desire to "undo" the border security put in place by Trump was overwhelming for Biden and his team to the point where they made no attempts to reconcile the increase in border crossings with the actual lack of resources available. Possibly they just expected that nothing had changed between 2017 and 2021. Now they realize that it has.

More to the point, blaming their mistake on Trump it is exactly what the Biden Administration has become: A bunch of finger pointers who blame everyone else for their failures. Of course, that is a trait that is also a carry over from the previous Obama Administration who spent eight years taking credit for every success and blaming Bush and Republicans for every failure.
