The difference was that in the past, these Republican Presidential Candidates sort of cowered, tucked tail, and ran. Or they attempted to explain it away or even apologize. This was seen as the best strategy. Not to engage these attacks head on, as to not further fuel the flames.
- In 2000, for example, an NAACP ad recreated the gruesome murder of James Byrd to imply that then-Gov. Bush was sympathetic to lynching black men. Over footage of a chain being dragged by a pickup truck, Mr. Byrd’s daughter says, “So when Gov. George W. Bush refused to support hate-crimes legislation, it was like my father was killed all over again.
- When John McCain ran in 2008, Barack Obama warned that Republicans would scare people by saying, “You know, he doesn’t look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills.” The McCain campaign fired back, accusing Mr. Obama of playing the race card from the “bottom of the deck.” Funny thing: All those reporters always hearing “dog whistles” from Republicans somehow didn’t hear this one.
- In 2012, when Mitt Romney went to the NAACP and told them face-to-face about his opposition to ObamaCare, the stories were all about how he was really just trolling for the racist vote. Vice President Joe Biden put it more explicitly, telling a largely African-American audience that if Mr. Romney were to win, he’d “put ya’ll back in chains.”
Right, wrong, or indifferent, Donald Trump is not cowering, tucking his tail, running, explaining himself, or apologizing. He's actually fighting back. It's an interesting strategy. But then again, almost everything Trump does is unconventional and interesting.
So rather than take his beating like the whipped Republican is expected to do, he calls out Hillary for being a bigot. He tweets about dead nephews. He yells at the top of his lungs that the Democrats take the black vote for granted. Then he hammers on the reality that things have not gotten better for them, even as their cities, states, and the country has Democrats in charge.
"What have you got to lose" is an interesting battle cry.
But it may be better than "Well shucks, I am sorry for being a racist Republican".

indeed. and a battle cry that i suspect is lacking.
let's see what they have to lose:
welfare
section 8 housing
TANF
AFDC
EBT/food stamps
medicaid
SSDI
obamaphones
and a multi-generational life dependency on all of the above which essentially constitutes a life of leisure with only one requirement: that you drag your ass to the polls every two years and pull all the levers marked "D."
none of the programs mentioned above exist to alleviate poverty. they exist to keep the recipients marginally poor but just satisfied enough that they keep "votin' democrat for the next 200 years."
and if any one or combination of entitlements begins to show the appearance of failing to deliver reliable democrat votes, the answer is always more government, more free shit, more "Uncle Sugar."
what must never happen is that we lift the recipients of entitlements completely out of poverty, into a world of work and self-reliance, rather than reliance on government. that is the democrats greatest fear and its greatest enemy - a self-reliant electorate that does not require the government to feed, clothe, house, and patronize them.
“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”
― Benjamin Franklin

But he's still likely to be back in the tower in January.
His trip to Mexico just can't help.
O'Hillary have the blacks where they want them poor and over the last 8 years getting poorer.
They own less Homes, renting is losing money, not building wealth
They start and own less small businesses
They vote Democrat, why?
Roger - I've never seen anyone try so hard to convince everyone that some unknown is not only known, but 100% inevitable.
Or maybe... you are really trying to convince yourself?
The Donald's trip to Mexico could turn out to be a major campaign mistake. Also the trip to Arizona to talk about immigration.
Actually, it's only around 77% inevitable.
Only that much.

So if you were his campaign manager, you would suggest he do what exactly?
Among registered voters Clinton favorable/unfavorable rating is now equal to Trump's according to a Washington Post poll.
That's not good news for team Clinton.
Yeah, the release of the favorables were deemed as "part 1". I am assuming that the Washington Post poll also includes their Presidential race which will no doubt be released in the next couple of days.
Although if the Presidential polling is as bad as the favorability polling was for Hillary, they may wait till Friday afternoon to release (dump) it.
I am very curious. They had Hillary up 8. But she has lost seven points on her favorability ratings and gained six in her unfavorables. Trump has a one point gain in his favorabilities, with his unfavorables holding steady.
Unless there is a serious shift in demographics, it would suggest another poll "closing" and moving in Trump's direction. But it is ABC/WashingtonPost, so who knows.
So if you were his campaign manager, you would suggest he do what exactly?

go into hiding?
not answer questions from the press in 270+ days?
He yells at the top of his lungs that the Democrats take the black vote for granted.

indeed.
he really doesn't need to yell.
democrats taking the black vote for granted has been accepted as a matter of fact since the late 60's.

he's just parroting the state run media.
politico declared trumps mexico trip a failure before he even arrived, for chrissakes.
So if you were his campaign manager, you would suggest he do what exactly?

Why did Trump leave his traveling press behind, Ch? They were directed to go to Phoenix where Trump will be speaking on immigration.
The meeting with the President of Mexico was supposed to be followed by press availability for both the Mexican and American press, and although reporters and correspondents already in Mexico should be able to cover the meeting, it seems odd that Trump's personal campaign press will not be present.
OMG, we know that jane and HB are of one brain, low IQ, not ill informed and hacks.
Trump going to Mexico, actually talking with there Leader and then to AZ, is doing the right thing, how do I know it is the right thing, look at the hissy fit HB and Jane are throwing over it.
Hillary is in Federal Witness protection program.
Trump looking very presidential in Mexico, right down to the side by side podiums.
Once again, he does what leaders do while Hillary hides.
Why did Trump leave his traveling press behind, Ch? They were directed to go to Phoenix where Trump will be speaking on immigration.
Perhaps the President of Mexico did not extend his invitation for a one on one meeting to a traveling press crew.
Ever think of that?
Beanersese para rrb.
Trump: Va a construir el muro ?
Nieto: No
Trump: Por lo que tendrá que pagar por la pared ?
Nieto: No
Trump: Gracias. ¿Podemos ir a buscar unos tacos ? Va a pagar por ellos?
Nieto: No
Trump: Adios.
Has the Federal Witness Protection handlers of Hillary allowed her to go to Louisiana?
Why has she not gone there, very odd for her to snub those people.
Trump went there and HB had a hissy fit, Trump goes to Mexico and does what real leaders do, you have a face to face with the leader of their country and come to a better understanding.
Why did Trump leave his traveling press behind, Ch?
Mexico is one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists. The campaign simply couldn't guarantee their safety.
But if they really want to go down and cover Trump then there are such things as e-tickets on airlines instead of whining about it.
The real question is why do you care?
There are already international journalists covering the meeting.
So if you were his campaign manager, you would suggest he do what exactly?

You would also be the campaign manager who advise him not to got to Louisiana.
He would have fired you in the first episode.
The press conference is a half hour late. No American flag.
The Mexican City streets are filled with protests.
I'm beginning to think that Trump isn't getting what he wants to save face.
The President is probably saying besa me ass.
We are not in agreement.
Trade is over $5 billion.
Reading between the lines, Trump isn't getting his wall.
He wants the free trade agreement, that Trump opposed.
No wall.
We didn't discuss who is paying for the wall.
LOL
He got shit.
I watched a lot in Spanish. He was respectful, but didn't give him squat.
Trump does look even tempered and presidential.
While Hillary look small and petty.
A win for Trump.
The problem with the left is that Donald Trump was invited by the Mexican President to come to Mexico.
If he didn't go. The left criticizes him.
If he goes. The left criticizes him.
If he wakes up in the morning. The left criticizes him.
This was a win for him. The President of Mexico was obviously happy he came and stated as much. He made it obvious that he felt Trump coming to Mexico shows they have common interests (even if they disagree).
Now what does Hillary do? If she goes, she's a day late and a dollar short copycat. If she doesn't go, it appears that Trump cares more about the relationship with Mexico than she does.
All she can do is sit back from her undisclosed bunker location and wheeze through her hoarse throat about how horrible it all was. cough cough.
We didn't discuss payment of the wall.
I'm sure the usual suspects will be drinking his bath water.
We already work together on border security.
The Mexican President didn't give him squat.
We didn't discuss who is paying for the wall.
Yes most liberals seized on that petty point and and most liberals look small a petty doing so.
This was an initial meeting where the Mexican president and Trump were looking for common ground.
I think they found some.
He started acting as a pit bull.
Today he looked like a chihuahua.
Bark bark bark bark. Truthers go YEAH!!!!
He keeps changing his rhetoric daily.
I bet the wall will be mentioned, but who's paying for it WBD Will Be Determined.
But he will look "Presidential" to the true believers.
Trump has matured as a presidential candidate. He is looking a lot like the US president. Just like Reagan, he is showing himself to be a viable, reasonable, legitimate candidate.
Actions louder than words and a very effective contrast to Hillary.
TBD
His signatory position was the glorious wall. And have Mexico pay for it.
Now it's To Be Determined. And that is a success.
Objective analysis?
Not on the planet Reality. .
Roger - nobody (but the biggest idiots out there) would have expected Donald Trump to go to Mexico (as a Presidential candidate) for an afternoon...
and get Mexico to agree to pay for a wall.
So I have only one question for you: Are you a big idiot?
Something they had in common is the high number of non-mexicans illegally crossing the border. Both want it reduced.
Headband's head explodes.
His signature issue is the protection of the border.
He didn't even discuss it.
In Donald We Trust.
Are you too stupid to understand why he failed?
Yes Roger...
I must be a fucking idiot because I didn't expect a Presidential Candidate to negotiate the building of a wall during a two hour first meet with the Mexican President.
What he did accomplish, however, was much more than Hillary Clinton did today.
All she got to do today was watch her poll numbers crash!
ña Nieto told Trump Mexico would not pay for border wall
Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto told Donald Trump during their private meeting today that Mexico would not pay for Trump’s proposed 2,000-mile barrier along the US-Mexico border, according to his Twitter feed.
Al inicio de la conversación con Donald Trump dejé claro que México no pagará por el muro.
Trump said we never discussed it. In Trump CH Trusts.
My rough translation, In the discussion with Donald Trump, Mexico will not pay for the wall.
I read enough Spanish to get that. Use Google if you must.
Google:
At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall
In Trump You Trust? He LIED CH, big time. Again.
Hb is flailing pretending this wasn't a great success for Trump.
The MX President had many fine things to say about Trump. If was a grand success.
Then you have hb level ignorance desperate to try to criticize it.
There are multiple sources that quote the President of Mexico calls Trump a liar.
Goods exports totaled $236 billion; goods imports totaled $295 billion. The U.S. goods trade deficit with Mexico was $58 billion in 2015."
HB, you are always wrong on numbers and hard data, in this tread, and I quote, you said "Trade is over $5 billion."
That is almost right, it is over 5 billion, but it is $58 Billion of US Dollars net, flowing into Mexico.
That is a loss for the US Tax Payers. You are welcome.
Give us the US Constitutional Authority that you seem to believe Candidate Trump has to Negotiate with the sitting President of Mexico?
I can't wait to see your answer, I suspect you will not respond, I know why, you are what is called in business "The Greater Fool".
Meanwhile The Federal Witness Protection of Hillary continues, she is bunkered up and hunkered down, doing endless prep for the debates which she insist have many breaks and a chair of stool for her to sit on.
As for the money flowing to Mexico , so far in the first 6 months of 2016, it is a negative 31.5 Billion dollars, that hurts the US Tax Payers, you recall them don't you, the most abused workers by this Government in history.
So , If we use some easy math (HB attempt to keep up) the USA will loss 63 Billion dollars to Mexico in trade alone. No good.
