No... Criticizing the Press is not the same as shutting them down...

The press has a logical dilemma. Their entire basis of existence is rooted in the concept of freedom of speech. One where the Press is entitled to critique, criticize, and otherwise question political leaders under the protection of the first amendment. Of course, the concept of free speech is hardly limited to the Press. Anyone who is an American is entitled to the same freedoms.

That freedom extends to everyone, including the President of the United States.
That freedom includes critiquing, criticizing, and otherwise questioning the press itself.

You see, the reality is that the Press has the "freedom" to criticize the President under the first amendment. But based on that same first amendment "freedom" the President has the right as a citizen to criticize them right back. If they don't want to be criticized, then perhaps "they" (and not the President) have skin a little too thin to be in the business.

Interestingly, it was fine when Obama refused to deal with Fox News. He left them out of press briefings, and for most of his tenure he refused to do any interviews or take questions from anyone working for the network. While he may have not been as boisterous in his public attacks on Fox, he certainly took more tangible action to "shut down" their access to his Administration. Nobody complaining today seemed to think that was a problem back then?

We are certainly entering a new Presidential reality. Trump will simply not behave like past Presidents, and much of this Country is perfectly okay with that. So I would think that the Press better get used to the idea that if they hit Trump, he is going to hit back. Crying about the unfairness of it all and demanding that it's not Presidential to criticize the press is not going to win them any points with many Americans.

Bottom line: the press has been losing credibility for some time. They should think about why, and possibly work to improve their relationship to the American public. Here is hint number one: blatantly working every angle they can to bring down a President they quite obviously don't like isn't going to help.

It wasn’t a press conference – it was a kinky dungeon session where masochistic journalists eagerly sought out the delicious pain Master T was dealing. Hack after hack stepped up, tried to play “gotcha.” and ended up whimpering in the fetal position. The best part was CNN’s Jim Acosta, fresh from whining about how conservative outlets now get to ask questions too, basically handing Trump the cat-o-nine tails. Dude, next time keep from talking yourself into more public humiliation by biting down on the ball gag.

The media’s safe word is “Objectivity,” but none of them uttered it.

The wonderful thing about Trump – and the thing that sets the Fredocons and wusspublicans fussing – is that he gives exactly zero damns about the media’s inflated and ridiculous self-image. He doesn’t pay lip service to their lie that they are anything but what Instapundit calls “Democratic Party operatives with bylines.” Trump called them the “the enemy of the American People,” to which normals responded with “Yeah, sounds about right.”

This appears to be a good choice. He's not a neo-con like Bolton. He has a reputation of thinking outside of the box. And I would bet that he's going to pick his own staff.
President Trump announced Monday that he is naming Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster as his national security adviser, replacing the ousted Michael Flynn.

Trump called McMaster "a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience” as he introduced him to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida before leaving to return to Washington.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who has been serving in an acting capacity as national security adviser, will be the National Security Council chief of staff, Trump said.

Both men were among four candidates whom aides said Trump had planned to interview this weekend as the president sought someone to replace Flynn.

Flynn was asked to resign last week amid allegations that he discussed U.S. sanctions with a Russian official before Trump took office and then misrepresented the content of that conversation to Vice President Pence and other administration officials.

But McCain was correct, when he said attacking the press is the first step of a dictatorship
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

mcpappy is working off of his last 3 or 4 marbles.

here's what he actually said. and the hindraker slaps him back to reality -

John McCain suggests on Meet the Press that President Trump is “suppressing” the free press, which is “the first thing that dictators do.”

“If you want to preserve — I’m very serious now — if you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press,” McCain said in the interview. “And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That’s how dictators get started.”

The American press is “many times adversarial,” i.e., it is adversarial when we have a Republican in the White House.

“They get started by suppressing free press, in other words, a consolidation of power — when you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,” McCain said. “And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”

John, John, get a grip! Who is “suppressing” the press? Do you seriously not understand the difference between criticizing the press and suppressing it? The press is not above criticism. On the contrary, it deserves to be called out constantly for bias and inaccuracy. President Trump has taken a good step in that direction, but a great deal more press criticism is in order.

Also: not calling on CNN in a White House press conference does not constitute “suppressing” CNN.

The Washington crack-up continues apace.

indeed.

the press has been in a delightful slumber in 0linsky's lap for 8 long years. they were snuggled and comfy, awaking only occasionally to lob a bomb of an untrue story at a republican...mostly trump.

so trump, being the rotten prick that he can be towards someone who wronged him, insulted the media at every turn. and then, to add insult to injury, he actually USED them, for FREE, to get elected.

brilliant.

and on election night the media dropped their veil of half-assed objectivity to openly cry and weep at the prospect of trump winning. the last shreds of credibility were pissed away that night. for good.

trump is suppressing no one in the press. he's simply chosen to ignore the liars. the media is reaping what they've sown. finally. it's only taken 50 years.

How about this, he looks like a great choice, The "anti-American" New York Times writs a fairly positive portrait.

General McMaster is seen as one of the Army’s leading intellectuals, first making a name for himself with a searing critique of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for their performance during the Vietnam War and later criticizing the way President George W. Bush’s administration went to war in Iraq.

As a commander, he was credited with demonstrating how a different counterterrorism strategy could defeat insurgents in Iraq, providing the basis for the change in approach that Gen. David H. Petraeus adopted to shift momentum in a war that the United States was on the verge of losing.

General McMaster’s challenge now will be to take over a rattled and demoralized National Security Council apparatus that bristled at Mr. Flynn’s leadership and remains uncertain about its place in the White House given the foreign policy interests of Stephen K. Bannon, the former Breitbart News chairman who is the president’s chief strategist.

But he is incapable of stepping back from his assaults on the press, and keep lying about events that didn't happen. And saying attention to the intelligence briefings instead of using Fox news as a source of inspiration, for example, the "Sweden affair"

He could get enough bipartisan support for the infrastructure and other things. The Democrats have been willing to work with the Republicans in the past. Example, Chip O'Neal and Ronald Reagan. And in the first two years of George W Bush, part B on Medicare.

C.H. Truth said...

Several things Roger...

First, I am not fooled by anything. I see right through Trump's game. He tosses around his hyperbole to distract people and get them focused on what he wants them focused on. Whether or not what he says is "true" is irrelevant to the strategy. Remember when you were talking about whatever it was last week that was the biggest story since Watergate?

Well guess what... now we are all talking about how much media bias there actually is and whether or not Sweden's crime levels are up because they took in a bunch of refugees. Oh, and even "you" like McMaster who is going to replace that one guy nobody remembers now.

He's got the left chasing cars around, long before they catch up to one, they start chasing a different one in a new direction. It's almost comical to watch.

I actually defend none of what he states, other than the things that are actually true... because it's irrelevant to the bigger issue. He understands that facts don't matter.

Secondly, everything you stated about appeasing the base could be stated in regards to Obama's first year or so in office. As Obama stated. He won. His policies. He met with congress, to lecture them. Obamacare with no GOP support. Etc, etc...

Trump is simply keeping his campaign promises, which oddly did not include any liberal policies that you and the rest of the liberals might like. Go figure.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Which is a stated opinion... as you pointed out, opinions and freedom of speech are protected by the first amendment. Ir's getting more apparent that you are thinking the New York Times and the Washington post, are no different than the National Inquirer.

That being said, it's hyperbole, "designed" by the media to fool people. So I can cut you some slack. You have been highly selective on what is said and who said it. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

To put this into plain English, the Vice-president and two thirds of the cabinet determine that the President "is unable to discharge the powers and the duties of his office" the Vice-president shall be the acting President.

The Justice Department named Fox News's chief Washington correspondent James Rosen "at the very least, either as an aider, abettor and/or co-conspirator" in a 2010 espionage case against State Department security adviser Stephen Jin-Woo Kim. The accusation appears in a court affidavit first reported by the Washington Post.

Kim is charged with handing over a classified government report in June 2009 that said North Korea would probably test a nuclear weapon in response to a UN resolution condemning previous tests. Rosen reported the analysis on 11 June under the headline 'North Korea Intends to Match UN Resolution With New Nuclear Test'.

The FBI sought and obtained a warrant to seize all of Rosen's correspondence with Kim, and an additional two days' worth of Rosen's personal email, the Post reported. The bureau also obtained Rosen's phone records and used security badge records to track his movements to and from the State Department.

Fox News issued a sharply worded statement on Monday calling the episode "downright chilling".

"We are outraged to learn today that James Rosen was named a criminal co-conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter," Fox News executive vice-president of news editorial Michael Clemente said in the statement. "In fact, it is downright chilling. We will unequivocally defend his right to operate as a member of what up until now has always been a free press."

Rosen has not been charged with a crime in the case. Kim was indicted in August 2010 on charges of violating the Espionage Act of 1917, one of a batch of six cases in which the Obama administration began to use the first world war-era spying law to prosecute suspected government whistleblowers.

Until very recently, the biggest foreign intervention in an American election happened in 1940, when the United States was riven over whether to enter World War II. Both sides in the war got involved.
Nazi officials funneled money to delegates at the Democratic convention to get them to vote against Franklin Roosevelt’s nomination and also backed efforts to get Republicans to adopt an antiwar platform. British agents, as Politico has detailed, covertly paid for biased polls showing that Americans favored intervention and also worked to defeat a prominent isolationist member of Congress.
It’s possible that Britain’s efforts helped swing the Republican nomination to Wendell Willkie, an underdog who was far less isolationist than his rivals.
But that’s nothing compared with the 2016 meddling by Vladimir Putin’s Russia. In an election decided by fewer than 100,000 votes, Russia’s campaign to undermine Hillary Clinton looks like one of several factors significant enough to have affected the outcome.
In contrast with 1940, however, there is a big unanswered question about the ties between Putin and President Trump’s circle: Why do they exist in the first place? The motives of all parties in 1940 were clear, even if the details of the intervention took decades to emerge.
The reasons that Trump has seemed so eager to cozy up to Putin, by contrast, remain murky. There are potential business ties, political ties and ideological ties between the two. There is even Trump’s own explanation, which revolves around Syria (and the Islamic State).
In my column today, I offer a guide for everyone confused by the story — and urge the Senate and F.B.I., now investigating the matter, to avoid the deference they’ve shown Trump so far.
For anyone who wants to follow the Russia story closely, I encourage you to read Julia Ioffe in The Atlantic and Michael Crowley and Susan Glasser in Politico, as well as The Times’s continuing coverage.
The full Opinion report from The Times follows, including Eric Uhlfelder on the low-income housing policy that cities should adopt in the age of Trump.

But that’s nothing compared with the 2016 meddling by Vladimir Putin’s Russia. In an election decided by fewer than 100,000 votes, Russia’s campaign to undermine Hillary Clinton looks like one of several factors significant enough to have affected the outcome.

well shit rog,

for all the supposed meddling russia did on trump's behalf, you'd think they'd be clever enough to get him a majority of the popular vote.

it would appear that they're just not that good at meddling.

Looks to me densa boys idol is a nambla member with views like that.

Perfect example of fake news that Trump is complaining about. I've never commented about Milo one way or the other. But that doesn't stop Opie from slandering me.

For the record I did enjoy the way Milo provoked liberals but found his anti-semetic and newly revealed comments about pediophila offensive.

But not nearly as offensive as the leftist violence used to suppress his free speech rights.

I do find it interesting however, that the people who now condemn Milo have been given Roman Polanski a free pass for years.

Starting with Meryl Streep.

Milo Yiannopoulos could stand to lose his job as editor at Breitbart News over newly unearthed comments he once made about pedophilia, the FOX Business Network reported.

According to the financial network “there is a fierce internal debate at Breitbart over whether he should remain with the website over his latest comments,” with some at the right-wing site telling Fox News that Yiannopoulos could be dismissed as early as end of the day Monday.

Yiannopoulos was disinvited from Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Monday after a video of him talking about pedophilia resurfaced over the weekend. In it, Yiannopoulos can be heard saying that some relationships between adults and 13-
