Why the President's speech was important...

So how important can one speech be? Well in the case of Donald Trump, I think it's hard to overstate the importance of him giving the sort of speech that was almost universally deemed to be impassioned, uplifting, effectively delivered, and most importantly Presidential.

Now that we know his full capabilities (when given the full weight of the ultimate bully pulpit),  it seems obvious to me that such praise will likely push a man like Donald Trump to continue to emulate this sort of performance, so he can find himself indulging in more praise.

But the truth of the matter is that underestimating Donald Trump seems to have replaced baseball as the national pass time, and he has had a field day of sneaking up on everyone and delivering when everyone thought he would fail. While these moments have probably been seen as somewhere between a strange curiosity and a pleasant surprise for the general public, this continued Trump success has dire consequences for his political opponents.

The Democrats have already made their determination to nationalize the 2018 elections as a fifty state referendum on Donald Trump. Certainly this strategy would have a pretty good chance of success if Trump truly stumbles his way through the first two years of his Presidency and people doubt his ability to do the job. Quite obviously, the strategy loses credibility, if the general voting public starts to see Trump as successful and actually approves of his performance.

Furthermore, a stumbling bumbling Donald Trump would certainly force many GOP candidates up for election in tough races to start to distance themselves from the President (as many did in 2016). Once that starts happening, it can become one of those "death spiral" things that people worried about in 2016. Many Republicans openly suggested that the Party concede the Presidency and throw Trump under the bus to save congressional seats.

Imagine the difference if the Party could circle the wagons around a Trump Presidency. The 2018 house elections will feature every seat up for grabs. If Democrats couldn't play an anti-Trump strategy successfully in 2016 when he was at the top of the ticket as an unproven, unserious, gaffe prone, reality television star turned candidate. How do they play it in 2018, now that he is President.

The campaign to undermine the Trump Presidency and keep him from becoming normalized relies in large part on Donald Trump reaffirming the narrative with his own erratic behavior. Those expecting to see more of the same Donald Trump in Tuesday's speech were obviously disappointed. Nothing will spoil their 2018 campaign strategy like Trump acting Presidential and Trump achieving any sort of success.

Do they even have a plan "B" at this point?  They may need one.

2018 will see all but certain gains for Democrats in the House. There have only been three midterms (out of the past 21) where the incumbent's party gained seats. Once was after Hoover was listed by Roosevelt during the Great Depression. Once was after Gingrich decided lying about a blowjob was an impeachable offense, and pursued impeachment through the fall campaign. And once was after 9/11 when the president was utilizing patriotic fury to promote a dubious invasion of Iraq.

I could certainly see Trump trying the 2002 Bush route. I don't think he'll have Bush's success if he does, though.

In 2018 The Republicans will gain ever more seats in the US House, Trump will do what "W" Did and add seats.

The US Senate is all but assured to move seats to the Republican Ledger, too many Dems defending too many seats in states Trump WON bigly.

I would like to hear from the Leftist and Indy, what are the key issues Dems can run on and win?

They tried HATE TRUMP and you see how well that worked.

Indy - think in today's more polarized society it's more difficult to nationalize things. There is such an opportunity for the left to only read liberal newspapers, only watch liberal news channels, and only listen to liberal pundits... and for the right to do the same with their own information gathering.

This simply creates a polarization that makes it much more difficult to pick up seats where the opposition holds an advantage. In 2016 Every Senate seat went in the same direction as the Presidential results. In 2014 the only seat that went against where the 2016 Presidential election went was Colorado (where the Dems lost a seat).

You could do some more research, but I think you will find that red state Democrats and blue state Republicans seem to be a rare bird... and taking over seats where your demographics don't fit is harder and harder.

agreed.

and in the house even if conventional wisdom follows tradition as indy refers to, the dems might pick up a few seats but cannot be expected to secure a majority, which is really all that matters.

I don't understand why Indy keeps spouting conventional wisdom when conventional wisdom has failed time and again with Trump.

With Trump as president, what's happen in the pass is not necessarily a good indicator of what will happen in the future.

President Trump is turning the "8 lost years" Economy around, and he is only getting started. Unless the dimwit Party can delay wealth creation and Optimism (which they can't) then they loss bigly again.

Jobless claims drop to a 40 year low last month.

Right way wrong way has more people thinking the US is now after 8 lost years, heading in the right direction.

Ever election comes down to the wallet/purse and so will the 2018.

However I would think that it's easier for a Republican to win a blue state senate seat than a Democrat to win a red state.

The reason blue states are blue is large concentrations of Democrats in large cities.

Get away from the city and the complexion changes. And while the Republican may not identify with the electorate on fiscal issues he is more like to be in sync on social issues.

Especially the way the Democrats are behaving now.

Less than a third of the electorate identifies with the radical left agenda proposed from the Democrats.

All a Republican would have to be is sufficiently moderate to win the other two thirds.

Here is something that has been ignored.

Former President George W. Bush had remained silent for the eight years of Obama, and comes out and is relatively critical of Donald Trump. He especially made a point that a free and open media is critical to our democracy Our esteemed host, instead of putting his self proclaimed analytical ability to interpret these comments by the President that was "soaring at the polls" ?

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The number of close Trump associates who have been accused of having undisclosed contact with Russian agents, or who have reportedly been investigated by the F.B.I., now stands at 7. Here's the scorecard:

1. Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager;

2. Michael Cohen, his personal lawyer;

3. Roger Stone, a longtime political associate;

4. Carter Page, an oil-industry consultant who acted as one of his foreign-policy advisers;

5. Michael Flynn, Trump campaign advisor and, briefly, national security advisor;

6. Jeff Sessions, Trump campaign advisor and now attorney general;

7. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and top White House aide (see story below).

The New York Times
Thursday, March 2, 2017
NYTimes.com/Opinion »
It’s the summer of 2016, and President Obama is delivering a surprise address from the stately East Room, the same place where he announced the death of Osama bin Laden, among other events.
“I’m speaking to you tonight to inform you that the United States is under attack,” the president says. “The Russian government at the highest levels is trying to influence our most precious asset, our democracy.”
Russia had hacked into the computers of the Democratic National Committee, and was releasing the contents of its cyber-theft, in an attempt to influence the election, Obama explained. He was careful to present the behavior of the Trump campaign itself in the best light and to say that it deserved every benefit of the doubt.
But the president wanted the American people to sit up and take notice of the attack. He wanted them to understand why the drip-drip-drip of WikiLeaks was happening. He wanted to call out the media for breathlessly reporting on WikiLeaks as if it were the product of great investigative reporting, rather than theft by a hostile foreign country. He wanted to put Russia on very public notice.
None of this happened, of course. It’s a piece of alternate history, dreamed up by a top adviser to Hillary Clinton’s campaign and described briefly in an excellent New Yorker article this week. The article tells the story of Russia’s campaign against the United States — under the all-star triple byline of Evan Osnos, David Remnick and Joshua Yaffa — and I recommend you set aside the time to read it.
Lamenting the Obama administration’s low-key passive response to Russia’s attack obviously depends on 20/20 hindsight. Obama had reason to play it safe: As a Democratic president, he was rightly worried about politicizing national security and using his power to hurt the Republican nominee. But it seems likely that the administration would have nonetheless chosen a different route if it had realized that Donald Trump was a serious threat to win the election.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

There is also one lesson that remains very relevant today: The country is still not taking Russia’s actions nearly seriously enough. As Tom Friedman has written, Nov. 8, 2016, deserves to join Sept. 11, 2001, and Dec. 7, 1941, as infamous dates of attacks on America.
We still need to learn the full story, through investigations by the F.B.I., Congress, the Trump administration and, especially now, an independent prosecutor. If you haven’t already read the latest news this morning, be sure to do so.
The full Opinion report from The Times follows, including Gloria Steinem on what men need at the movies and Ross Douthat on the rise of the French far right.

Remember when Democrats loved Russian interference in our elections:

Ted Kennedy Made Secret Overtures to Russia to Prevent Ronald Reagan’s Re-Election

Sen. Edward “Ted” Kennedy had “selfish political and ideological motives” when he made secret overtures to the Soviet Union’s spy agency during the Cold War to thwart then-President Ronald Reagan’s re-election,

In the 1980s, Kennedy was “terribly misguided” and “a fool” for seeing Reagan as a greater threat than either the leader of the Soviet Union or the head of its brutal secret police and intelligence agency.

The presidential hopeful’s secret correspondence with the Soviet spy service was first reported Feb. 2, 1992, by the London Times in an article headlined “Teddy, the KGB and the Top Secret File.”

As this reporter wrote in 2010, the story focused on a 1983 document from the spy agency detailing Kennedy’s overtures to top officials in the former Soviet Union. The Massachusetts Democrat had challenged President Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Democratic primaries and was considering the possibility of running again for president.

In a letter addressed to then-Soviet General Secretary Yuri Andropov, dated May 14, 1983, KGB head Viktor Chebrikov explained that Kennedy was eager to “counter the militaristic policies” of Reagan, who defeated Carter as the Republican nominee, and to undermine his prospects for re-election in 1984.
