Deal or no Deal

Democrats say they have a deal with the GOP and Trump on DACA. The GOP and Trump say there is no deal.

Network news. the NY Times, and Breitbart reporting that deal has been reached. Politico, Bloomberg and others reporting that there is no deal and that the GOP has not even discussed the possibilities among themselves.

So here is where we are at in 2017. We can't even get sane reporting on whether or not two sides have come to a deal on DACA and border security? Go figure.

My best guess is that the Democrats have circled their wagons (as they always do), and probably have some sort of deal "in principle" for the DACA portion of a broader bill among themselves. They maybe even got some sort of buy in from the President regarding that "side" of the broader agreement. Perhaps they even figured that they could get that agreement with little concessions if they leaked it out and put pressure on the President to follow through with some sort of similar statement of support.

But clearly this is going to have to be a give and take. The President might have eased off the partisanship on the subject of hurricane relief, and was willing to cut a deal with the side that could help him get it done. But this is not hurricane relief, and one deal doesn't mean that the President is suddenly a Democrat.

That being said, I believe that the President does want some relief for the 800,000 dreamers in all of this. I don't believe he wants to deport them. His best play here is to make it a win for both sides, and a win/win for himself.  Make sure that the Democrats what they want and that the GOP gets what they want. Both sides give a little. Then everyone's a winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Trump has backed off a little bit but if you read the tweets and actually look at them is very ambiguous. He still said he does not want to throw all those people out of the country. But he's appealing to his base of course. Breitbart went insane. But it's not going to much it's going to get done. DACA is going to be successful and the 700,000 people will not be deported.

The response on the Wall was in a tweet, he said it is undermining construction. But not the big show he promised.

The Republicans are going ape shit. So he's trying to calm them down.

Roger - I don't know a single Republican who is taking McConnell and Ryan's side on this one. Consensus being that Trump made that deal as a warning to the GOP. Even my friend who is a never-Trumper admits that the GOP congress has to get their shit together and didn't really blame Trump.

It's only a few of the hold out "establishment" DC media types who don't see the broader picture. They believe he got "rolled" in the deal. But they are simply not admitting the total dysfunction of the congressional GOP right now. They still believe that Trump didn't wait long enough or didn't hold out long enough or something. Prudence carried the day over partisanship. Some only understand partisanship.

But that deal was "exactly" the sort of thing one should expect out of Trump. If you voted for him, and didn't think he would ever "cut a deal" that wasn't purely 100% for the Republican Party... then you didn't really get what he was about.

Bill Clinton did a lot of the same things. Worked with Republicans where he thought Republicans had better ideas. But when he did it, the media tossed around fancy words like "Triangulation" and made it out like Clinton was the one pulling all the string. Nobody ever accused him of being "rolled" because he helped pass legislation that his Party stood against. It actually made "him" more popular.

no alky, breitbart is not going insane and the GOP is not going apeshit.

what they both are doing is showing a legitimate level of concern with the early reports. particularly since trump's #1 campaign issue was stopping illegal immigration and building a wall.

trump DOES need to thread this needle very carefully because if he does capitulate, or give the appearance of capitulation, he risks alienating those who catapulted him into the white house.

that's the difference between the left and the right, alky...

the left demands to be lied to every day. they love it and thrive on it.

the right, otoh, insists upon being told the truth. which is exactly why ryan and mcconnell are on the shit list these days.

the issue is the 99% that are undocumented democrat parasites. THEY need to get the fuck out and stay out. they're a net drain on the federal budget and the overall economy and their ONLY redeeming value is to democrats -

every two years on election day.

btw, towns like college park md. are pulling back the curtain on the left's REAL intent:

The Washington suburb of College Park, Md., on Tuesday became the largest U.S. city to allow noncitizens to cast ballots in municipal elections after a divided City Council vote that reflected the nation’s heated and emotional debate over illegal immigration.

Unlike most other states, Maryland allows towns and cities to decide for themselves who can vote in local elections. In recent years, Hyattsville, Mount Rainier, Takoma Park and several smaller towns have extended that privilege to noncitizens. College Park, home to about 32,000 and the University of Maryland’s flagship campus, will join them starting in 2019.

The decision to allow undocumented immigrants, student visa holders and residents with green cards to vote comes eight months into a crackdown on illegal immigration by President Trump and one week after his administration said it will wind down a deportation-relief program for young immigrants brought here as children. Council members and activists who supported the measure said it would send a message that College Park is a welcoming community for all residents, regardless of legal status.

Roger -

DACA didn't provide any "amnesty" or "citizenship" of these workers. It basically provided those (who qualified) for two year green cards that they could continue to apply for.

The main "protection" was from amnesty. The main objection (legally and politically) is that the President is not allowed (under the consitution) to provide "any" illegal with "any" form of status. Not even a green card.

If those 800,000 are actually going to school or working then (I would assume) under any agreement, they could keep their green card status. That means (whether the percentage is 99 or 9) that those who are not going to school or holding a job would not qualify and could be deported.

I don't believe that the GOP will agree to move "further" than DACA in terms of granting status. I would offer that any real citizenship would be a non-starter for most Republicans.

But if it's just to keep the status quo (issuing the temporary green cards) then there is a deal to be made.

Maybe you need a new circle of friends,

I am referring to the deal with the Democrats regarding the hurricane relief.

There "is" no deal on DACA right now, so there is no reason to believe that Trump is stabbing anyone in the back on that one. Especially considering immigration crack down is "his" issue, more so than the GOP's issue.

He harms himself politically more so than the GOP by agreeing to any bad immigration deals.

Leaving the White House for Florida this morning, President Trump told pool reporters that “the wall will come later,” adding that a deal is “fairly close” with Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell both on board, but both sides have to “get past the border security,” Axios reports.

Said Trump: “We’re working on a plan — subject to getting massive border controls. We’re working on a plan for DACA. People want to see that happen. You have 800,000 young people, brought here, no fault of their own. So we’re working on a plan, we’ll see how it works out. We’re going to get massive border security as part of that. And I think something can happen, we’ll see what happens, but something will happen.”

He added: “Mitch is on board, Paul Ryan’s on board. We all feel — look, 92% of the people agree on DACA — but what we want is very, very powerful border security, okay?”

Why a DACA Deal Could Be a Problem for Republicans
iow, WHY REPUBLICANS ARE IN HEAP BIG TROUBLE

Playbook: “John Boehner and Eric Cantor were thrown to the wolves a few years ago for even toying with some sort of immigration reform package. Paul Ryan promised conservatives when he won the speakership in 2015 that he would not pursue and immigration package unless it had the support of the majority of Republicans. That means whatever deal Trump cut — or will cut — with Schumer and Pelosi needs to have the support of 121 House Republicans.

“Remember: Paul Ryan is always under the threat of an immediate referendum vote of his speakership. Immigration isn’t like touching the third rail. It’s like hugging an electrified pole while wearing soaking wet clothing.”

House GOP Worries About ‘Mass Exodus’ of Members

“Following a rash of retirements, House Republican leaders are scrambling to get something done legislatively to convince other frustrated members not to toss in the towel in a tough political environment,” TPM reports.

“It’s not much fun to be a House Republican these days. President Trump has repeatedly taken potshots at their conference. Primary challenges burble on the right. Congress has been unable to pass much meaningful legislation in spite of unified control of Washington. Every trip home means an earful both from liberals furious at their support of the president and conservatives irate they’re not doing enough to support his agenda. And members who haven’t seen real competition for years face tough races due to Trump’s deep unpopularity.

“That weighs heavily on Republicans who are on the fence about returning.”

Yes Breitbart went nuts. rrb show.er up your ass here and you jerk.

In a meeting with establishment politicians from the Problem Solvers Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition, President Trump signaled a full-fledged cave on the issue of giving amnesty to nearly 800,000 illegal aliens currently protected by an Obama-created executive immigration program.
Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the ultimate end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, under which hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens were given work permits and temporary protected status, Trump has remained unclear on whether he would stick to his anti-amnesty campaign promises or cave to the political establishment.

At his White House meeting with moderates, according to The Hill, Trump is set to choose a legislative deal that quickly legalizes the nearly 800,000 illegal aliens on DACA, without getting any pro-American immigration reforms in return:

Indeed, said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), the president is already getting impatient.

“He says, ‘Oh, DACA, we want to move on this quick, we don’t want to wait six months,’” Cuellar said after the meeting. “He said, ‘It’s already been six days and nothing’s happened.’”

Cuellar said Trump didn’t propose a timeline, but voiced concerns that waiting until the March 5 deadline grows closer would only put a spotlight on the issue and make it more difficult for Congress to act. The president, Cuellar said, wants to move “when people are not expecting it.”

“He said, ‘We don’t have to tie a wall to this. We can put a wall [in another bill],’” Cuellar said, emphasizing that other border enforcement measures would likely be included.

Although Trump is looking at pushing through a clean amnesty bill for DACA recipients, he did mention during the meeting, according to Cuellar, the possibility of passing Sen. Tom Cotton’s (R-AR) pro-American worker “RAISE Act,” which cuts legal immigration in half, in exchange for amnesty.

Trump’s cave to DACA amnesty comes just a day after the White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short said the administration would look at exchanging amnesty for tax cuts. Short, as Breitbart News reported, is a former executive with the pro-mass immigration billionaires, the Koch brothers.

Additionally, Short led an effort in 2016 inside the Koch organization to derail Trump, opposing him for his “America First” agenda. Although Short’s anti-Trump operation never came to fruition, he went on to join Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) unsuccessful presidential campaign.

I don't think most Republicans or Trump supporters have an issue with a bi-partisan approach to both immigration and tax relief. In fact, I am sure there are quite a few polls out there suggesting that American voters (of all Parties) believe this is the right approach.

But it sort of goes back to the previous argument. Obama didn't work across the aisle much. When they had majorities they pushed Obamacare on party line votes. When he lost the majority, he started trying to do everything by Presidential proxy.

So there are those out there who suggest that what is good for the goose, is good for the gander... and think the GOP should be passing legislation that just makes the GOP happy.

Personally.... I think these sorts of policies have a better long term chance of success if both Parties contribute and get something they want. Not that I trust that even working together that Congress can find their collective asses with both hands... but at the very least you won't get one Party campaigning "against" immigration reform or tax reform... and then everyone pointing fingers when it doesn't work the first time. If you have everyone vested in the program, you have everyone vested in the fix.

On the flip side, I think on other issues (such as Federal Judgeships) I think it's extremely important that Trump do what Trump campaigned on and that McConnell does whatever he needs to get those nominees confirmed.

James, remembering, said...

Trump promised that we would all be just absolutely delighted at how quickly and easily he got things done.

hey alky,

here's your feel good story of the day:

An estimated 16,000 retired Teamsters across upstate New York will be hit with 29 percent pension cuts on Oct. 1 as the union representing truckers and others in the shipping industry grapples with declining membership and a growing number of retirees.

Another 21,000 active, or currently employed Teamsters will see their pensions drop 18 percent below what they previously counted on for retirement.

The cuts are for members of Teamsters Local 294, also known as the Upstate Teamsters. Many of the members work for UPS, a major freight and delivery service.

The pensions are known as multi-employer plans, which are union-administered programs for workers such as truck drivers who may work for a variety of employers during their careers.

Notably, most of the members who voted on the cuts opposed them. Of the 35,173 ballots mailed out, 9,788 voted “no” while 4,081 voted “yes.’’ But under federal rules governing such votes, ballots that aren’t returned are counted as “yes” votes and 20,767 did not come back.

“They never participated,” said Tom Baum, the volunteer retiree representative to the local’s pension board.

The size of pensions that union members collect vary widely, depending on how long they worked and where. Those who had lengthy careers with companies like UPS have healthy pensions and a few, 452, collect about $5,000-per-month, said Baum.

And the GOP is in a full panic mode.

Trump’s exasperation with GOP leadership is boiling over. After watching the Obamacare repeal effort crash and burn after seven months of work, two weeks of talks with Democrats have yielded far more action. Trump has signaled that he wants the talks to continue, and a person familiar with Wednesday night's meeting described it as "jovial" and far more pleasant than meetings with GOP leaders.

A senior White House official said Trump doesn't think the current Republican leadership has gotten much done and wants to change that. "He's not OK saying, 'Oh, we're just not doing anything,'" this person said.

“It’s a process I’ve never seen before,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). “He was frustrated that a Republican majority has not achieved the goals he wants to. So he is spending time with, as he calls them, Chuck and Nancy.”

Republicans spent Thursday trying to pull Trump back from a deal that would not provide wall funding. And Trump at times walked back his initial confirmations of an agreement on the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals programs.

Still, it was not the first time Trump has been enamored with Democratic talk about an immigration “deal.”

James, the only reason most of the Republicans oppose DACA reform and enabling a pathway to citizenship, is that they would vote, mostly for Democrats. The Republicans have been trying for a decade to make it more and more difficult for voters who are likely to vote for Democrats to vote. It's completely contrary to the Constitution and the right to vote. The right of the PEOPLE are those who grant the power to the government to keep them safe and give them the opportunity to succeed. But if you are Hispanic, OMG, they are brown skinned and that offends the Trump base, like the blog bigot.

GOP Feels Betrayed By Trump

Politico: “While GOP leaders were able to brush off the debt pact as no big deal, after Thursday they were reminding the president that they — not the Democrats — run Congress. Though they differed on whether to bill it as a deal, Trump and Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi agreed in some fashion that they want to shield so-called Dreamers from deportation and beef up border security, leaving the fight over the border wall for later.

“That left Republicans grappling with a frightening new potential reality: that Trump will cut controversial deals with Democrats and leave them to pick up the pieces.”

There are four people whom Hillary Clinton devotes good-sized chunks of her new book What Happened to criticizing. Three of them are Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and James Comey.

The other one is Bernie Sanders.

Clinton critiques Sanders in the book by name on many different issues, and she sometimes even goes out of her way to do it, reviving disputes from the campaign and portraying Sanders overall as hypocritical, disloyal, and unserious. (Though she does occasionally praise him for having some good ideas.)

She attempts to cast some blame on Sanders for her defeat last fall, saying that during the primaries he resorted to “innuendo and impugning my character” in a way that caused “lasting damage,” and that he stayed in the race too long.

Anonymous said...

Then she reiterates some of her own critiques of Sanders from the primary, calling him insufficiently committed to gun control and reproductive rights, and claiming his policy proposals aren’t “realistic.”

Finally, she says his theory for how to win over working-class white voters doesn’t make sense, and argues that he’s far too negative toward the Democratic Party: “I am proud to be a Democrat and I wish Bernie were, too.”

At a time when much of the Democratic establishment has been working hard to make Sanders and his supporters feel included and represented in the party, Clinton has chosen to take the opposite approach. No unity or kumbaya for her — Clinton is making it very clear to all her supporters that she does not have a particularly high opinion of her old rival, and that she has no intention of papering over her differences with him from the 2016 primary.

The book has been promoted as a candid tell-all in which, now that Clinton is finally out of politics for good, she will at last tell us she truly thinks. “I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public,” she writes in the introduction. “Now I’m letting my guard down.”

But it’s quite clear that Clinton isn’t retreating to a comfortable retirement — she spends part of the book’s last chapter promoting a new political action organization she started this year. At the very least, Clinton is using this book to position herself as a leading voice in the political arena for years to come.

And it suggests she will keep using that voice to criticize Sanders and his rising influence.

Anonymous said...

Near the end of the book, Clinton puts the lion’s share of the blame for her defeat on then-FBI Director James Comey’s late intervention, arguing that she was set to win before that happened. She puts secondary blame on Russian interference, and earlier in the book she admits some of her own strategic mistakes.

But she also claims Bernie Sanders did two specific things that hurt her.

First of all, Clinton complains that Sanders disparaged her character with “innuendo” about her being corrupt and in hock to Wall Street and financial interests — and that these attacks stuck. She writes:

Bernie routinely portrayed me as a corrupt corporatist who couldn’t be trusted. His clear implication was that because I accepted campaign donations from people on Wall Street—just as President Obama had done—I was “bought and paid for.”

...Because we agreed on so much, Bernie couldn’t make an argument against me in this area on policy, so he had to resort to innuendo and impugning my character... His attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump’s “Crooked Hillary” campaign. I don’t know if that bothered Bernie or not.

Secondly, she complains that Sanders stayed in the primary race long after it was clear he would lose and complains he waited too long to endorse her.

Anonymous said...

Ultimately, none of this [her disadvantage in caucus states] mattered much after I built up a large delegate lead in March. What did matter, and had a lasting impact, was that Bernie’s presence in the race meant that I had less space and credibility to run the kind of feisty progressive campaign that had helped me win Ohio and Pennsylvania in 2008. ...

...The delegate math hadn’t been in question since March, but Bernie had hung on to the bitter end, drawing blood wherever he could along the way. I somewhat understood why he did it; after all, I stayed in the race for as long as I could in 2008. But that race was much closer, and I endorsed Barack right after the last primary. On this day in New York, Bernie was still more than a month away from endorsing me.

These specific critiques don’t strike me as convincing, because much of Sanders’s behavior seems to be within normal boundaries for a tough primary and is indeed quite similar to what Clinton herself did in her 2008 run. (She critiqued Barack Obama’s ties to a slumlord donor and questioned whether he was ready to be president. She also stayed in the race through the last primary even though Obama had a clear delegate advantage, though she waited a few days to endorse him rather than over a month as Sanders did for her.)

Whatever damage Sanders did to Clinton’s chances seems unlikely to have resulted from these specific tactical choices, but more plausibly to stem from the fundamental nature of his appeal and candidacy compared to hers. He purported to offer a more idealistic and pure form of politics that his supporters found very appealing, which made traditional Democratic politics seem underwhelming in comparison. (Plus, she really did give those Wall Street speeches, and Donald Trump was going to use that against her no matter what Sanders said.)

Clinton doesn’t stop with documenting how she believes Sanders contributed to her defeat. In separate chapters devoted to women and gun violence, she goes out of her way to bash Sanders by resurrecting critiques she made of him during the primaries — with the intention of painting him as a hypocrite and impugning his own progressive credentials.

First, in a chapter called “On Being a Woman in Politics,” Clinton writes:

I was dismayed when Bernie Sanders dismissed Planned Parenthood as just another part of “the establishment” when they endorsed me over him. Few organizations are as intimately connected to the day-to-day lives of Americans from all classes and backgrounds as Planned Parenthood, and few are under more persistent attack. I’m not sure what’s “establishment” about that, and I don’t know why someone running to be the Democratic nominee for President would say so.

After the election, Bernie suggested that Democrats should be open to nominating and supporting candidates who are anti-choice. Other topics, such as economic justice, are sacrosanct, but apparently women’s health is not.

Then, in a chapter about gun violence, Clinton again dredges up primary disputes to portray Sanders as a phony who does the NRA’s bidding:

Bernie Sanders, who loved to talk about how “true progressives” never bow to political realities or powerful interests, had long bowed to the political reality of his rural state of Vermont and supported the NRA’s key priorities, including voting against the Brady Bill five times in the 1990s. In 2005, he voted for that special immunity law that protects gun makers and sellers from being sued when their weapons are used in deadly attacks.

The NRA said the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act was the most important gun-related legislation in more than twenty years. Then-Senator Barack Obama and I had voted against it. I couldn’t believe Bernie continued to support the law ten years later when he ran for President. I hammered him on the issue every chance I got... As I told the crowd, it was like he was reading straight from the NRA’s talking points. After months of pressure from activists and victims’ families, Bernie finally said he would reconsider his vote.

Whether or not you view these criticisms as sincere — given Clinton’s own posturing on gun control in 2008, that part comes off as at least a little disingenuous — they show Clinton is returning to arguments she used during the primary. Back then, she portrayed herself as a stronger progressive on social issues than Sanders, and argued that he was unreliable and too willing to compromise them away. This was of course partly a response to Sanders’s own rhetorical strategy on economic issues, as Clinton writes:

It was beyond frustrating that Bernie acted as if he had a monopoly on political purity and that he had set himself up as the sole arbiter of what it meant to be progressive, despite giving short shrift to important issues such as immigration, reproductive rights, racial justice, and gun safety. I believed we could and should fight both for more equal economic opportunities and greater social justice. They go hand in hand, and it’s wrong to sacrifice the latter in the name of the former.
Perhaps Clinton’s intends her return to these points here as a salvo in an ideological debate over the Democratic Party’s future. Or perhaps Clinton’s main purpose is just to criticize Sanders in particular. Or perhaps the 2016 primary in fact never ended after all.

Anonymous said...

Clinton continues her critique of Sanders by arguing that while she and her team spent time and took care balancing practical and political feasibility on her various proposals, he treated policy with far less seriousness:

Bernie and I had a spirited contest of ideas, which was invigorating, but I nonetheless found campaigning against him to be profoundly frustrating. He didn’t seem to mind if his math didn’t add up or if his plans had no prayer of passing Congress and becoming law... No matter how bold and progressive my policy proposals were — and they were significantly bolder and more progressive than anything President Obama or I had proposed in 2008 — Bernie would come out with something even bigger, loftier, and leftier, regardless of whether it was realistic or not. That left me to play the unenviable role of spoilsport schoolmarm, pointing out that there was no way Bernie could keep his promises or deliver real results.

Jake Sullivan, my top policy advisor, told me it reminded him of a scene from the 1998 movie There’s Something About Mary. A deranged hitchhiker says he’s come up with a brilliant plan. Instead of the famous “eight-minute abs” exercise routine, he’s going to market “seven-minute abs.” It’s the same, just quicker. Then the driver, played by Ben Stiller, says, “Well, why not six-minute abs?” That’s what it was like in policy debates with Bernie. We would propose a bold infrastructure investment plan or an ambitious new apprenticeship program for young people, and then Bernie would announce basically the same thing, but bigger. On issue after issue, it was like he kept proposing four-minute abs, or even no-minute abs. Magic abs!

Clinton goes on to offer the somewhat more generous explanation that Sanders viewed policy as “a tool for mobilization” rather than “a road map for governing.” She also says he “deserves credit for understanding the political power of big, bold ideas,” and praises him for coming together with her to work on a college affordability plan and “the most progressive Democratic platform in memory.”

Clinton says Sanders’s plan to win over working-class white voters is bad, and reminds readers that he’s not actually a Democrat

Anonymous said...

Then, in what may be Clinton’s most straightforward entry into the Democratic Party’s debate over its future, she expresses some serious doubt about one electoral theory popular among Sanders and the left — that Democrats can win back working-class white voters by becoming economic populists. She writes:

Some supporters of Bernie Sanders have argued that if I had veered further left and run a more populist campaign we would have done better in the Rust Belt. I don’t believe it. Russ Feingold ran a passionately populist campaign for Senate in Wisconsin and lost by much more than I did, while a champion of free trade, Senator Rob Portman, outperformed Trump in Ohio. Scott Walker, the right-wing Governor of Wisconsin, has won elections there by busting unions and catering to the resentments of conservative rural voters, not by denouncing trade deals and corporations.
After a section in which Clinton describes how some West Virginia Trump supporters welcomed coal CEO Don Blankenship, who had been convicted of violating mine safety standards, to a protest against her, she continues in this vein:

Some on the left, including Bernie Sanders, argue that working-class whites have turned away from Democrats because the party became beholden to Wall Street donors and lost touch with its populist roots. It’s hard to believe that voters who embrace Don Blankenship are looking for progressive economics.

After all, by nearly every measure, the Democratic Party has moved to the left over the past fifteen years, not to the right. Mitt Romney was certainly not more populist than Barack Obama when he demolished him in West Virginia. And Republicans are unabashedly allied with powerful corporate interests, including the coal companies trying to take away health care and pensions from retired miners. Yet they keep winning elections.

Now, Clinton could merely be expressing her opinion here. She could be trying to rebut the “Bernie would’ve won” argument. Or she could be staking out her position in a debate over the Democratic Party’s future that she intends to participate in.

Whatever the case, she also makes sure to remind her readers of one point: that, while Bernie Sanders might have some good ideas, he technically isn’t a Democrat at all:

I'm wondering if that may in part account for our respective divergence of perspectives on most things.

Trump Still Has No Plans for a Border Wall

“President Trump made clear Thursday he is determined to get his wall. But his demands, and occasional threats to shut down the government over funding, belie the stark reality facing his administration: Nine months into his presidency, there is no plan for constructing the kind of wall the president promised his voters for two years,” NBC News reports.

“A study Trump ordered in January on how to fully secure the border has not been completed. His transition team focused on immigration enforcement plans with greater chances of success. Proposed wall prototypes — which officials had hoped to deploy this summer — are months behind schedule. Construction firms have stayed away amid the prospect of political retaliation. And new NBC News polling suggests only lukewarm support for a wall the president today said would happen.”

But with Democratic senators now refusing to agree to hearings for two of President Trump’s nominees to the federal appeals courts, Mr. McConnell told The Times that the blue slip “ought to simply be a notification of how you’re going to vote, not the opportunity to blackball.”

What a difference a few years make.

Back in 2009, Mr. McConnell and the entire Republican Senate caucus — then in the minority — implored President Barack Obama to honor all blue slips. The appointment of federal judges is a “shared constitutional responsibility,” the Republicans said, warning Mr. Obama that “if we are not consulted on, and approve of, a nominee from our states,” the senators intended to prevent that nominee from getting a hearing. They expected the blue-slip policy “to be observed, even-handedly and regardless of party affiliation.”

Another comment from the opinion piece, lol.

"Rev Jim a wannabe Michael Phleger, except he has not a church, congregation, nor hood to represent. Rev. Jim I think someone needs to remind you to look at the November election results and see how many American voters said no more to Obamas' policies and those in government who supported them. Anytime a raging liberal offers advice to republicans, it is always in bad faith and a heavy price tag. Shalom Rev.Jim"

Loretta said...

"Maybe this letter is some sort of really bad inside-joke made in poor taste that I am as a Republican am not meant to get. But I am not accustomed to having it asserted that folks are to be treated at all differently- especially based on race- and especially by a "pastor". I accept that the joke might well be over my head intellectually. But frankly, if that's not it- my not "getting it" seems to fall squarely on very poor delivery by the letter-writer then."

Loretta said...

"Chef, do you not remember this mans' short lived column in the Pantagraph titled, "From The Pulpit?" He was residing in Saybrook at that time but for some reason relocated to Normal and is now not directly affiliated with one particular church. His liberal views are known so some in the community but as I stated he is hoping to be much more of a community organizer such as Pfleger or Wright."

Loretta said...

"All I can say is, OMG... Another bit of "wisdom" from Rev. Jim.... Seriously, Lord help us!"

No fans there either, LOL.

CH, take out the trash on the Legacy blog, you can see why.

rrb has been trashing the blog for years with his hate filled behavior. Making this as a personal attack, contrary to the written word by the host of the "Coldheartedtruth" blog. This is a prime example of why he should never have posting rights on the blog hosted by a serious and popular blogger. Perhaps one day the host actually thinks about the fact that trash like this is contradictory to his goals.

I posted a serious post on the current political spectrum. But his trash is contradictory to the written word of our esteemed host.

Loretta aka Savagetta quoted above from an opoinion column that appeared in the Pantagraph and that the vast majority of Pantagraph readers never read. Right wing kooks frequently post on it and much of the time I paid them no attention. No one in my church either read them or ever commented on them to me. Nor did anyone in my church ever object to anything I wrote in Letters to the Editor or From the Pulpit (to which I still contribute).

One right wing kook guy tried to claim that I was not really at Bellflower, so I invited him to church. Of course the coward never showed up, just as none of you cowards ever do.

The current elders at Bellflower Christian church are:
Joe Hubbard, Gary Harper, Kevin Lawrence, Phil Lawrence.

The elders Emeritus are Duane Anderson and John Wyatt.

All of them served while I was there except for Kevin who was
then a deacon and later became an elder and now a lay minister.
(The story of that young man's life is wonderful, a "miracle" as
his father Phil puts it.)

All of them will tell you that I was not fired from Bellflower Christian Church. They will also tell you that about a year after
I left, I with my wife were invited back along with other past pastors where I participated in and spoke at the celebration of their 125 year anniversary.

Poor Loretta aka Savagetta. She is so full of hatred that she

what happens when you so blatantly lie, as she has again and

alky,

thank you for your inquiry.

it appears that with regards to moi, you have some anger issues. issues that could be unduly stressful and could hinder your ongoing recovery from the installation of your 2nd hand liver.

in an effort to assist you with this malady, and because i care, i really do, might i suggest you take up what has come to be known as "nostril yoga." this is a therapy that has recently been reported to have helped hillary clinton with her (BOOM) devastating loss (BY A LANDSLIDE!!!11!) to donald trump.

here's a how-to video where hillary herself describes the practice:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/14/health/hillary-clinton-alternate-nostril-breathing/index.html

just be careful of how you close off each nostril, especially in public, lest someone see you and think you're picking the ol' snot locker, digging deep for a bat in the cave.

good luck and peace be upon you alky,

rrb

CHICAGO (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions can’t follow through — at least for now — with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to Chicago and other so-called sanctuary cities for refusing to impose new tough immigration policies, a judge ruled Friday in a legal defeat for the Trump administration.

In what is at least a temporary victory for cities that have defied Sessions, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber ruled that the Justice Department could not impose the requirements.

AP Via TPM

For now, including Los Angeles and the state of California, if the Republicans find a way to stop the compromise that "Chuck and Nancy" have worked out a deal, to extend amnesty to the Dreamers. The President has wobbled back and forth, front and back on this issue, but the bottom line is he knows that we are not going to load busses of young adults into busses and ship them across the border to Mexico and beyond.

He is trying to link this to his wall, but just the other day, he said we are doing "renovations" to the existing wall, something that both the Bush and Obama administrations did before. And we all know that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, if it's built.

There are enough Republicans in both houses, and the Democrats can find a way to extend amnesty, but the biggest problem for both sides, is a path towards citizenship. The Democrats want to follow the path set by Ronald Reagan who did give a path to several million illegal immigrants. The Republicans, as usual, want to make it impossible for them to become citizens, because the majority of them will vote for Democrats, and the Republicans have a long history of attempting to limit the numbers of Americans who vote for Democrats, from voting. Typical anti-democracy beliefs. Full turnout always favors the Democrats.

Bottom line, Trump can get his wall, at least in some face saving fashion, if he opens the path for eventual citizenship for the Dreamers. We shall see.

FYI rrb,

My recovery is incredibly successful. You make a mistake when you assume that I have explosive public behavior, you are 100% incorrect. The weight lost associated with the surgery, and the improvement in my complexion, I have noticed a couple things that I find interesting. In general, I have a happy face, I smile easily and people look and listen, more than I can believe. Women especially, give me second or third look, something I never had before. Good looks run n the family, and now that i'm no longer over weight, tall and slender, with silver white hair, although partially bald.

My kidney doctor called and said that my kidney function is at full capacity, I no longer need to take Lasix, and don't need another appointment, for six months, unless something goes wrong. I stick to the diet, keep active, go to the gyn, and expose you as a hate filled loser, for my amusement..

that's awesome, alky. i'm glad to hear that you've made the most incredible recovery in the history of recoveries, and that women are throwing themselves at you (you must wear that "achmed the dead terrorist" look very well). i would not be surprised if the hospital names an entire wing after you. i mean, medical miracles like yours don't come along every day. this, plus being the star orator of the local "drunks r us" squad is an accomplishment that, in the annals of accomplishments, must rank right up there with clearing a plugged up toilet on the first try, or that feeling you get when you put on a fresh set of "depends."

hey, if you're lucky you might live to see the LA olympics in 2028, and you might even have most of your mortgage paid off by then.

you live a life us mere mortals can only dream about, alky.

Glad to point this out, James said Oh Yeah? and then said...
